Project Runway Chat Thread

Apr 20, 2011

    1. That's correct. You find an image of your character wearing a costume. It has to show what the complete outfit looks like so the judges know what you're basing your design on.

Then you make a rock version of that costume.

    3. The Project Runway main thread states that all accessories, with the exceptions listed, must be made by the contestant. Jewerely would fall under that rule., so you can't use jewerly that's already made. You could, however, recycle the necklace by taking it apart and using the beads (or whatever) to create a piece specifically for your doll.

    7. Concerning game 10 ~ we're hoping to get an entirely new look for our logo! The background color will be changed to compliment the colors of the winning costume. We're going to try to change the lettering to a different format.

Luckyl, bless her heart, will be doing the make over. We are so excited!

    8. for our glamour photos for the new challenge, I know we can use props, could I possibly use another doll in the photo? My model will be the focus of the photo but I was kinda curious about having a second doll in the background. My mind is picturing my glamour photo as an album cover. :sweat

    10. The decision is that no other dolls can be used in photos. It is thought that another doll would clutter up the photo and draw attention away from the costume that is being featured.

    13. Soika ~ that's acceptable to use the same character as someone else. It will be interesting to see two interpretations of Cinderella.

I notice your Cinderella is wearing wooden shoes instead of glass slippers. It must the the Russian version? I never did understand how Cindy could dance in glass shoes without breaking them! lol!

    18. i agree. i'm such a klutz i would trip and break them and cut my foot on the glass! lol. maybe they were tempered glass and thus didn't break easily? or a fairytale version of bulletproof ;)

i'm still searching for my character/picture. i have a general idea of what i'd like the finished costume to look like. now just need to find a fairytale from which to derive it!

    19. Actually one of my sister got married wearing 'glass slippers'. I was in grade school and I'll never forget them. They were very popular at the time. They were open toed and made of some sort of plastic so you could see through them. They had a little white ribbon bow with a big 'pearl' in the middle.

I told her they looked like Cinderella and she laughed and said maybe she'd live happily every after. She ended up getting a divorce ~ so much for fairy tales! lol!

      • Creative
    22. At least one element, which you will have to point out to the judges. They're looking for a design that is true to the original costume, but isn't a direct copy.

Long dresses can be converted to short dresses, the costume can have a modern look, cloaks can be of a different design, you can use any colors you want, design elements can be added, etc.

    23. I'm joining in this thread here :) The Fairytale Rock Band challenge is a really fun idea--and there are so many great entries! I have to admit, I have a special fondness for the Mossy Coat girl, I love woodsy greens and flowers.

This is my first time competing which should be an interesting experience. Rock band is sooo not my thing, which is why my girl is a Folk Rock singer!

    28. hmmm...I might have to change mine then...I was thinking we were desiging an original and just incorporating an element of the character, kinda like more of a inspired by but not something that would look similar to the original...because mine is just wearing animal skins. I'll have to give this more thought..still have some time.

    29. Kitty Blue ~ You can design a costume and have some item made of fur, like a stole, hat, pouch, leggins or whatever. That would be using a design element from the original costume.

      Does that make sense?

    44. Well, I got my wish, they got all the jurors they needed before my name came up, and the rest of us were excused. Simply by reason of showing up, we were considered to have fulfilled our obligation and are immune from further jury duty for 8 years.

I have updated my Work In Process post with my materials and the beginning of the Juliet cap I'm knitting. I've almost finished the knitting of the cap and I will either sart the beadwoek on it or start drafting patterns for the tunic and trousers next. I'd enjoy the beadwork more, but I can't procrastinate too long on the patterns.

    53. oh my goodness, such wonderful costumes are showing up in the thread! I can't wait to see them all!!! I am so proud to be a part of this game!! did you see the scene namaro set up!!! It is amazing!!!!

i had wanted to make a hooka and other props but my procrastination did not make time for it. my cats also kept trying to get into the "tent" I set up, I was looking for my camera and I heard someone starting to scratch around in the sand floor.... glad I caught them before there was a "camel" turd in my photo.... :sweat

Its funny how all the crazy things happen when you have a deadline (and they seem to be more crazy if you procrastinate) I fell rollerskating on tuesday and ended up with a minor concussion and whiplash....:doh ROLLERSKATING??? I am so going to buy a helmet :) also, Whiplash SUCKS!! I have never had to experience it before now, but boy golly gosh darn! it hurts SO much! feeling much better now though, can finally sleep through the night.

what did you do while sewing your project? I watched the whole first season of "pretty little liars" (don't judge! I ran out of good stuff to watch on netflix a long time ago) so that means it took me about 22 hours to make this costume..... (though I did watch a few episodes before sleeping so, probably more like 18 hours)

did anybody start a clothing item and have it not end up in the final look? I was making a vest and it never made it into the final cut.... mostly cus I was planning on it matching the shoes that I decided against making.

does anybody have a suggestion of a downloadable program for editing photos? I had to do all of mine on paint...... *dies* want to save myself from the torture next time.

      good work everybody!!

    54. OMG I love Mookie!! :D that little face makes go *squee* every single time!! I love seeing him in costume and the scene namaro set up is really something. Too adorable.
I am a huge procrastinator too, and always regret it afterwards because I don't get to get the props that I wanted or no time to do all the pieces of a costume that I wanted.
For this challenge, I wanted to do boots - even got a fabric that looks like suede/leather, but failed miserably at it, and didn't have time to try again :(
I also wanted hand 'cuff guards' or whatever they are called, and even made the cut-out for them, but rand out of time to actually fiddle with all the detail and make them look good. It doesn't really help that it takes me a whole morning to a full day to do a single shirt - without any fancy decorations!! I am so slow at sewing!!!
But I plan to sew a Caliph/Sultan costume for my Idealian and hopefully do some more work on the warrior costume... I also have the costume from the previous challenge that I have started but didn't have the time to complete. So yeah, I really, really hope I will not be procrastinating again

    57. Lolling at "camel" turd - too much realism! Ah, yes, cats and sand boxes ... inevitable, really.

I don't have Photoshop myself, it's been on my wishlist forever. You can do quite a bit of basic photo editing right on Flickr, though. For collages, I have to create them as an "object" in Publisher, then copy and paste into Paint to save it as a JPEG. So, I, too, would be interested to know of any (free!) downloadable apps that would make things easier. But even Photoshop won't make up for the fact that I simply suck at photography, I have to admit.

And I agree, there are some amazing entries in this Arabian Nights challenge! I think this was a particularly inspiring theme.
