Project Runway Chat Thread

Apr 20, 2011

    1. This question has not been raised before, but the decision is that each contestant may enter one doll per challenge. The doll can be any sculpt or size, however an extra bonus point is awarded to designers who use a tiny doll (6" and under) due to the difficulty of creating a costume for such a small doll.

    5. Do I understand well: the challenge is to make an unsewn outfit made of paper (all kind of papers?)
Can one use glitters, sequins, feathers, or whatever to adorn said paper?
      And what about shoes?
Thank you for answering my silly questions!

    6. The costume must be made from paper doilies. Doilies are the paper place mats used at weddings, parties, etc. They are placed under plates to protect the table cloth, or for less formal dining, the table from food spills.

Yes, this is a non sewing challenge. Glue, tape, staples and any other method can be used to hold the costume together. It would probably be easier to make the costume on the doll and then remove it after taking photos.

Yes, the costume can be adorned with any trimmings you'd like.

We are requiring one accessory also made from doilies. This can be shoes, or your doll can wear normal shoes, or can be barefoot.

    9. My opinion - I like the idea of opening this up to crafters, since I've seen some pretty amazing clothing creations with no sewing involved. However, I don't like the idea of the challenges being entirely "no sewing". I would prefer to see them as sewing optional. You may end up including the crafters but excluding the sewers.

Personally, I enter these challenges largely to improve my sewing skills so I'm not very excited about working with glue, staples, etc. With each challenge, I hope to end up with something that can be reused in the future and I'm not sure I'll be able to do that when not only working with unusual materials, but also constructing in a method outside my comfort zone. That said, I'm willing to give it a try.

I think the use of alternative materials is very much in keeping with the Project Runway concept, thinking back to the TV show and when they've made clothing out of food, flowers, trash bags, coffee filters, etc., but eliminating sewing as a construction option is not.

    11. I had a quick question; the accessory for the outfit, does it need to be entirely constructed from doilies, or would it be permitted to have other elements incorporated in it? For example a metal charm to act as a frame for the accessory.

    16. There's only two days left to join game 7!

Since there's been a lack of interest in this challenge, we've decided not to have any more non sewing games.

We may still include challenges that ask for unusal items to be used, and we may have the option of non sewing, but sewing will also be an option in all future challenges.

    27. I was asked a question by PM and decided to answer it here as it may help our designers understand the challenge concept.

Although the Boho sytle was adopted by the Hippie culture, it is not exclusive to that era. It had been around for centuries and became widely popular during the late 1800's.

Costumes with Hippie trappings, such as peace signs, fabric that looks like the American flag, or other obvious references are not what we're looking for in this challenge.

    28. Thank you for clarifying, as my ideas were then way off track! All i had pictured when i entered were the olson twins who often dressed this way, but it was more of the hippie style so i need to get up this morning and get some research done!! thanks for the info and also to the person who originally asked this question!

    30. Hippie type costumes are fine as they were heavily influenced by the Boho sytle, but using flag fabics or adding symbols such as a peace signs or obvious references to the 60's and 70's, is not what we're looking for.

Think more along the lines of gyspy type clothing, if you're going in that direction, but there's more to it than that.

Each generation had it's own concept of Boho. The oldest was gyspies/tribesmen who dressed outside the conventional, scarves, shawls, big bold jewerly, long gathered skirts.

Todays Boho is entirely different. Googleing Boho images will give you a good idea of the modern concept.

We are excepting Boho from any era, including the 60's and 70's styles.

Don't forget that one of the fabrics must be 'tie dyed' or an in scale print.

      Have fun!

    42. So I've been doing a lot of googling and collecting pretty inspiration pictures on pinterest. 'Floaty' really seems to be pretty key! Does anyone have any thoughts on fabrics that will still pull off floaty at doll-scale? Shrinking things down always throws off the drape, and all fabrics feel 'heavier' on a doll than a person.

Maybe super light silks? Like for scarves. I'm not sure if I can find that in town though, unless I get lucky at the thrift store. Super thin knits might work too, they seem to still cling and sag pretty well on a doll.

    43. It can be difficult to find fabrics that give you an appropriate drape in doll scale when you're looking for a floaty style. You pretty much just have to run your hands through a lot of fabric at a fabric store.:sweat But I've also found great stuff at thrift stores too. Especially check out the blouses section where they often have super-thin polyester knits or gauzy cottons. Just remember to sew knits with a ball-pointed needle on machine or by hand.;)

    44. Argh, I might need some help figuring out what 'scale' pattern means LOL I mean, how small does it have to be?!? (yes, I'm not good with math at all) :(

cowpewtr, I find 'elasticy' fabrics to be nice and 'floaty'... How about using drapes/sheers?? Might work :)

    45. If you buy new fabrics, washing them a few times with fabric softener helps. Usually there's some sizing starchy stuff on fabric off-the-bolt to keep it nice and manageable for the ladies who cut it for you. ^^
Also, I learned in the 2009 Triathalon that nylons make great doll-scale floaty/thin fabrics.

I'm going through my own closet of 'stuff I haven't worn in a year+' for fabric selection. I'm trying to save most of my budget to go raid the hippie store down the road for carved beads.

And I just dyed my scarf! Lighter than I thought it would be, but I actually like the blue-gray color more than the black I was going for.

    46. In scale just means that the print looks like it's meant for doll clothes. In other words, you don't want to use flowers that are 4" big on a doll. On a human that would be in scale, but on a doll it's way too big.

A half inch, or one inch flowers, would be in scale depending on the size of the doll.

    51. Yeah, I think so far the Mardi Gras was my favorite, there is something about costumes and New Orleans Venice have always been my favorite 'fantasy' cities and both are famous for their masked celebrations.

I liked the last one too, but I had a hard time coming up with a costume for a kid that is not really a typical kid of this world (or at least that's what I wanted to do). I also loved the elemental one, the outfit was perfect for my doll and he is still wearing it LOL
The planets one was really, really cool, I just tanked on it big time hahaha but that's ok, at least now I can say I know how to use a sewing machine! I couldn't have said that beginning of last year :)

    56. Thrift stores are wonderful places to find old clothing that can be recycled into doll clothes! It's especially fun when you find a fabric that's not readily available today. I've found outdated prints that haven't been popular for years, but were perfect for era doll clothing.

I hope you found something truly exciting that will inspire you!
