Project Runway Chat Thread

    1. PRGerry:
How are you making out? Your new lady isn't one of those top-heavy models, is she? Those are a learning challenge!

    2. Well, LadyFeather.... she is a bit on the top-heavy side! First mock up = darts was to off, second try = boobs way to pointy :( , Third try = not perfect, but close enough! ;)

I was lucky enough to hit the fabric store Saturday, found one piece of fabric I needed and a few other goodies, maybe one for this project. I'm coming along at a good pace this time around, cause we never know what's sneaking up from around the corner! lol

      How's everyone else doing???

    3. Yep I've started actual sewing. Doing a Renaissance style outfit with crisscrossing ribbon decoration on the undersleeves and the front so lots of hand sewing to do.

    4. I made some progress this past weekend, but didn't get nearly as far as I'd have liked. Plus, the beads I wanted to use for decoration are too irregular in size (and consequently look like crap) and the ones I was planning to buy instead were out of stock ... I smell a lot of last-minute work coming my way.

    6. Well, I know I said it before and I'll say it again...... this is going to be one heck of a challenge for the judges!

I know I just read something (not going to mention any names) about armor, beads and ribbon and my model yells out....it's time to run for the hills, lol Just kidding around, always need a chuckle here and there to ease the tension ;)

I finished off her basic top and the skirt last night so that's out of the way. Might work on something for one hour tonight.

    8. All my girls but little Georgie are well endowed. I am busty myself so I don't connect well with flat girls (MSD and over mind you). Is that weird? lol :)

They only thing I have done for this challenge is decided on a color scheme and style. I have not gone fabric shopping or sorted through the horde I already have yet. I am tentatively planning that for this weekend.

    9. I must be the odd one here. When I was little a man's perfect woman looked like the local blonde-haired stripper; don't bump into her or she'll tip over. But she also had to be pure as the driven snow although it was to be accepted that the men would wander. Stepford wives anyone? The 50's were weird. My ladies, the few I have, all have adequate bosoms and no more.

    12. Progress, such as it is, is very slow. I've gotten all the armor plates sewn on the pieces that get them and am working on the decoration for those pieces. On the right is the roll of duck tape and the sheet cork I used to make the armor plates. They are sewn on with the rust color thread to look like it's chain links that hold them on. The roll of fake rhinestone-look trim is what I'm using to decorate the edges.
The little bag of red on the upper left is tiny spades. Yes, they're red; they're all I could find, but for a buck I couldn't go wrong. At the lower edge of the picture there is a piece of scotch tape with them stuck to it. I color in each one with a permanent marker then glue them to the plates. This part of the decoration may not get fully done - I used about 400 armor tiles total - and the little suckers like to fall off. I haven't started the clothing that he wears under the armor; it's rather standard stuff so won't take too long to put together. I stole boots off of another doll 'cuz I liked them better than any of the others that I had. And I'm still trying to figure out how to get the wig to stay on his head. I really may have to glue it on!

    13. Holy moly, that looks good! I feel behind now ... luckily there's one part of decoration I've been able to start on already even though the bodice is nowhere near finished, or I'd never get it done in time. But I guess I always knew I'd need that first week of the upcoming holidays to get stuff done :sweat Work doesn't leave much room for creativity at the moment.

    14. Wow! LadyFeather, you are so ambitious. When Mookie channeled Ghengis Khan a few challenges back, I had that same idea about maklng scales and sewing them together. Once I made a few test ones, I gave up on that idea and Mookie would not have needed anywhere near 400. I ended up using masking tape, painting it brown and using a ball point pen to etch a groove to simulate the separations. Of course, my end result was kind of primitive looking but lucky for me Mookie is easily pleased and I am not a perfectionist. I can't wait to see how yours turns out. You always have such professional looking entries.

    15. I liked the way Mookie looked. He had more a rough and rustic look to me, which suited the character perfectly. I use that style a lot with my Meng Horde. My King of Spades will fit in well with them.
Thanks for the compliments. You may call it ambitious but everybody around here calls it crazy.

    29. I am totally bummed right now. I had an idea for a fairy setting and I was going to use an item we had outside by our pond. When I went out to check on the item I found that it is not there! Someone stole my mushroom light! Now I have to find another or work on a different fairy idea. Not fair! What did they want with my mushroom light?

    32. Well, the missing has been found. Although my husband was in the yard with me while I tried to find my missing mushroom light he said nothing. He came in to the sewing room yesterday stating that he found my light. He had stored it in the shed since it didn't want to light; he just hadn't remembered that he did that.
Now if any of you have other halves with either a garage or shed of their own you know what I'm about to say. I never venture into his shed. No matter how much he convinces me that what I'm looking for is in there, I always fail to find it. The last time I looked for something it took a half hour and I found nothing close to what I wanted. When I want gardening tools I tell him what I need and he gets it. You should have seen the look I got when I suggested that he straighten it out. I figure it should be done at least once a century. I suppose my sewing room is just as alien to him, though at least I can tell him where whatever he wants is stored.
So, the light is back and the grey cells are processing which resin to victimize, er, use. I just may use a 1/4 scale this time.

    33. What good news! That is such a cool light so I am glad it is safe and sound. :) My partner runs her auto body shop out of her garage so she (thankfully) has to keep it neat. Otherwise it would easily be a black hole I would never find my way out of.

Can't wait to see how you utilize the mushroom now!

    41. Having a hard time deciding on what to make! So much inspiration :) spent a couple hours on Pinterest and found a great fabric at Pacific fabrics. Can't wait to start creating!!!

Realized when I picked out a lovely to design for that I don't have any eyes that fit her!!! Nor a wig. So I went shopping :D have 4 pairs of eyes on the way and some alpaca (and some silk, and another color of alpaca) coming for a wig (or three).

Still trying to figure out where to photograph.... Not many Sandy beaches in Seattle.... Lots of pebbles. May end up buying a bag of sand.

    43. This is an easy one for me; it will be a fun project for our next doll meet.
      Here are my materials:

The fishhook material is a thin cotton for the shirt. The denim is tentative for the shorts; I may go with an oyster white heavy cotton instead.
There will be a white sleeveless tank top under the shirt - not much in clothing but then this is a summer theme.
The thread will be for a crocheted hat and the ribbon will be the hat band. I may try a fishing creel too. I'll make up some fish hooks to put on the hat band for a complete fisherman look. The whole thing will be put together in the blow-up row boat my daughter and I share, complete with oars if we can find them, that will be floating in the pond. That pond has become one of the more used 'props' I have. There are a few other props I'll throw in to enhance the theme; I think that should cover the sand and surf theme pretty well. Oh, and my tan El has a sleeping face too!
Anybody else get struck with an idea right off the bat?

    54. This post refers to the new challenge 'Fur and Leather' which will be posted shortly.
If you're wondering where to purchase faux fur this site offers a large varity.
      http://www.distinctivefabric.com/
When you first sign up you get 10 fur swatches for free. This is legit because I've done it and have since ordered more swatches and fabric from them. The samples are 3X5. You can order ten different samples or 10 of the same kind or any combination. If you need bigger pieces you can always sew them together.
After your free swatches they're $1.00 a piece and shipping is free. You're not obligated to purchase anything else from them and they don't bug you. There's no 'catch' and they are free.
