In the spring of 1815, a brother and sister sat for a portrait. They both were in the last stages of consumption and their family wanted to have something to remember them by once they were gone. The family requested that the painter do what he could to return the bloom of youth to their faces and show no evidence of the disease that was ravaging their young bodies. The portrait was completed in May and on the evening of its completion, the brother turned to his beloved sister and said, "It is time." They then went walking out into the garden as was their habit in healthier days and were never seen again. Instead of suffering the pain of death from consumption and the possibility of one dying first, leaving the other to die alone, the siblings decided to go to a secret place to take their lives together, so that they could die in each others arms. The next morning, after discovering that the siblings had not returned from their walk, the family searched everywhere for them, but to no avail. Once they returned home, they were shocked to see that the portrait had undergone a horrifying transformation. Where the painter had added blush to their cheeks and a sparkle in their eyes were now the pale faces and clouded eyes of the dead and in their hands they held bloodstained handkerchiefs. It is said that on moonless nights in May, the brother and sister can be seen walking through the garden still, arm in arm. I put these costumes together for a "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" themed Halloween teaparty and the story just kind of wrote itself.^^ Eugenia's outfit: made by me based on a outfit from 1815. Edgar's outfit: vest by me, the rest is Volks. Hats: Michael's Wigs: Dolga and mystery
Beautiful and very lovely dark story ^.^ I love the costumes as always, Kelly! You did a wonderful job on the photo/portrait that really enhanced the way the feel of the story ^^
I clicked for the name, and stayed for the story! Very sweet and sad, just the sort of thing I love. ^_^
Great outfits and pictures! And I do highly recommend the book (yes, there actually is a book) "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" to anyone who likes zombie fiction or Austen.
I stopped in for the title, and was blown away by the beautifully rendered pictures and the fabulous little horror tale that went with them! Perfection!
*cough cough cough* Rest in peace, o ghostly sibs! I am stoked that they finally got their little spattered hankies. They look all wan and wonderful. Great pics.
Hah! XD My son is reading this book. I was horrified that 'the canon' should be so bastardized! XD But then again, why not? ^^;; Wonderful pics! Raven
Beautiful photos! And seriously, amazing book. Much better than the original. I love your little "twist" on the story, and the changed painting!
Wow! Thank you so much, everyone, for all your wonderful comments! I really hadn't expected my short photostory to get so much attention, so please forgive me for not responding individually. Believe me, I really appreciate all of you taking the time to say something nice. I have to admit that I haven't read the new book, but the idea certainly is intriguing. Of course, I love the original and 19th C. romance and Gothic novels in general, which inspired my photos and ficlet.
Great story!! The first pic is so haunting, especially after reading the description~~ >w< What awesome Halloween costumes they have!
Aw, thank you so much for more sweet comments! It was a fun project and I'm so glad that others are enjoying it.
Kelly, I loved your story! Quite believable, really. Of course they would want to die in each other's arms. And the blood on the handkerchiefs! *sobs* Please can we have another story???
Wow, what a haunting, yet bitter sweet story. These portraits are impeccable. Love the setting, pose and lighting. This is the mood that I've always wanted to achieve for my portraits but never succeed. I will need some tips and thank you for sharing.
Aw, thank you! I think that these two were destined for tragic stories with their pale skin and haunting looks. Whether I'll be up to writing another one anytime soon is another question. Thank you so much! I've discovered that I can get pretting good low-light shots by waiting until the sun has just gone behind the buildings across the street from me and then adjusting my camera settings to make it look darker. It seems to cut down on the graininess of true nighttime shots.
these pics are awesome. i collect old photographs and quite a few of them are similar to yours. you have captured the nineteenth century fantastically well.....bravo!!!
So glad to hear it!^_^ Thank you! I love old photographs too and while I usually like to pose my dolls more naturally, the old photos were very stiff, so I'm glad that I managed to get the right look.
Thanks so much! I'd like to make more Regency style costumes, because it's one of my favorite eras for clothing.
Thank you so much! The dolls are so inspirational and it was fun combining costuming, photography and writing.^_^
Whoa, I loved Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and I love your dolls. Masha has always looked a bit pale and wan to me and I think zombie theme suits her. Thanks so much for sharing.
