So I've had this happen in two different dolls where I've had chipping on the bottom of my dolls feet. It's anthro dolls with toe beans so inevitably there will be chipping regardless, haha. Now, I'm looking for a better to seal them to minimize chipping? Normally, like all doll parts, I finish any using like 3 layers of sealant to finish it off. I prefer to use zm finishing powder if volks had it in stock but I'll keep msc around since they don't always have it . Is there a better way to seal it? Should I maybe get a brush on matte medium for thicker layers? My next step is to get some fabric for doll stands to be both decorative and maybe add some padding. The little animal feet don't really fit shoes and I have gotten into the hobby deep enough to make my own in any effective manner haha. But tips please! Thanks for your time
Additional sealant layers won't really help, but you can try glossing the beans! Dilute the gloss, do a couple layers (let them dry inbetween), and then a light spritz of sealant to dull it down. It's more flexible and thicker, and as such should provide a bit more protection. Also yes, you should avoid posing on hard surfaces if possible.
I haven't used it yet, but I've heard of people getting good luck with Minwax polycrylic protective finish to help prevent chipping. Play model enthusiasts sometimes use it in their kits. However, it reacts with and smudges certain kinds of sealants such as Zoukei-Mura (but not MSC!). It dries glossy/semi-glossy, and will require some additional layers of matte sealant to mattify it. It comes off with isopropyl alcohol just like MSC too.
Well on the first, sounds like all my doll stands are all getting covers made. And that minwax? Definitely gonna go try it.
