Hi everyone! So I'm wondering how much longer would you say to wait after the time estimate has passed for the production of pre-order pieces? So when a company/artist says the wait time is approximately 5 to 8 months, once month eight comes around how much longer would still be acceptable to wait before you try to get a refund? I mean this in a situation with: -barely any communication issues (through dealer or personally they are always reachable) -but not progress updates except "there are a lot of orders that are being worked on", "recent lockdowns in China have slowed progress", "slow casting due to intricate parts", etc -some orders have already been shipped (very few owner photos on social media platforms) -extremely long pre-order period during which production for already placed slots already started -artist showing new projects (heads, full dolls, etc) every few weeks, some of which are being put up for pre-order at an interval of every few months -artist had a rise in popularity during the first few months of your wait, until that point the artist always delivered orders within the estimated time In this situation, would you wait another eight months? Double of that? Half of that?
Personally, I never went for a refund in such cases because I don't care more about delays than I care about actually getting the thing. At the end of the day the goal for me is to always get what I ordered, even if it might take longer than expected. I have a bunch of dolls here to work on, I am in the hobby for a long time, if this thing now takes 10 or 12 months instead...whatever. I don't depend on it being on time, and I am not someone that goes all "oh no, now this doll is tainted for me!" because the wait time was long/there were issues. As long as it is clear orders are being shipped, I am calm. I know it might take some time, but it will be shipped. However, I would speak up at around the 9 months mark and ask for an actual estimation of when to expect my order. Judging from what you described, it unfortunately sounds like business as usual in this hobby The longer I've been in it, the longer wait times have become on average...and it only got worse through Covid and other current events! So as long as communication is there, the artist is somewhat transparent about the issues and orders are being (slowly) shipped, I wouldn't worry too much. You only have to ask yourself what matters more to you: getting what you ordered, or receiving your money back. Keep in mind though that it's like resetting a counter. You might take that money, turn around to buy a different doll with it, and then have to wait 8 months again
I agree with Ara, it's mostly reliant on how much you want the doll I don't have a lot of experience with wait times (90% of my dolls were bought secondhand) - I've had one doll that took a smooth 4 months to arrive, and then I have other dolls that I've been waiting on for just about 1 year and nearly 3 years...I figured on the day my wait hit 3 years, I'd ask for a refund, but in the end who knows if I'll really do that or not, the artist's dolls don't come up secondhand all that much... If the company/artist has good communication, maybe send an e-mail (or their preferred method of communication) asking about your order. They may be able to fill you in with some info (about where you are in the queue or estimated further wait time etc.) I think if you're easily able to reach the company/artist, that will give you a lot of reassurance and help the wait feel less painful.
It comes down to how much confidence you have in the artist and at what point your frustration cancels out your desire to own the doll. I am a bit more negative and cautious after the mess that is Dollshe. I don't think I would wait more than a year for any doll and I would have to really trust the artist/company and be madly in love with the doll.
I hate this one, and it's a common pattern. To answer your question, though, as long as some orders are going out, and the artist is still communicating, I'll wait. But that has burned me once or twice.
Thank you so much for everyone that has already answered me! I noticed that I missed adding one point in my initial post, which is that I've waited 19 months right now, so I've already waited double the estiate, it'll be triple in february. It feels like I'm slowly but surely moving from the two options that @Ara and @zekarmisama mentioned, slowly the money I spend outweighs the admiration I have for the doll, i.e. I slowly would prefer getting the money back to put it in dolls from companies that have good experience with high numbers of orders and thus deliver wihtin an expected timeline. But it's a situation similar to what @Tweendoriru described, the second hand market for this artist is extremely limited, meaning if I get a refund at month 24 (as is my shaky plan right now) I probably will never get this opportunity again. Concerning the communication and if orders are still going out as @Alewife asked: six months ago I asked my dealer for this artist where I am on their waitlist for the doll (only theirs since some other dealers orders and weibo orders are probably in between, before and after, though how many is unclear) and I was fifth. A few days ago I asked again, hoping to at least be fourth, but I'm still fifth... So within six months, as far as I know, there was no progress on the doll line I ordered from. After some reflection on your answers I'm going to ask my dealer to find out how many orders are in-between theirs. They previously said they had no way of knowing, but the artist should know so they should be able to find that out I realise now. If at month 24 there is no progress even on the in-between orders, it'll cement my decision. As a side-note/answer to one thing @Ara mentioned: It's not that the doll is now "ruined" or anything since there were issues, but that I am fairly new to the hobby, with just a bust stand and floating heads, but no full doll. Since a full doll is for me part of all the fun things I want to do with dolls and I have to restrict myself due to space to only one full doll, having to wait so long for it makes the wait harder I believe.
Oh wow alright, that is an information that certainly would have made me hum and haw a little longer before posting my reply 19 months, and the added "within 6 months nothing happened in the waitlist" is...uh, that's quite a lot. And yes, as a new person having this be your first full doll makes it especially frustrating. May I ask which company we are talking about, and which dealer? I have a vague feeling, but at the same time...there are too many companies/artists/studios like that out there, that keep having these outrageous wait times
I was trying to put in a lot of information while getting ready to go to sleep, so I seem to have missed that It's DLace and the dealer is BJDivas. In the DOA waiting room for DLace there was recently another person that got a refund after around 20/21 months of wait.
Expected the artist, wasn't sure about the dealer but not surprised either (Divas is usually very low on the priority scale for most companies) Dlace is notorious for spitting out new stuff constantly, he's insanely creative and constantly making new stuff...but his casters regularly struggle with his designs. Someone on Discord also had to wait forever to get their male Machina. What I would try is to reach out directly to the artist on Insta: Trey Gegenfu (@trey.gegenfu) • Instagram photos and videos Explain to him the situation (when did you order through whom), that within the last six months nothing happened even on the waitlist, and that you're starting to feel like you'll never actually receive this doll. Ask him if he can provide some more insight.
I think it's wonderful you can even ask about where your order is at on progress, but ooh, the 6 months with no movement in the wait-list hurts. If you can contact the artist, please keep us posted!! I'd love the story to end where you can bring your doll home, but I can totally understand unrest with that...
Oh, I'm surprised that you expected DLace, I didn't know that they had already build such a reputation, that's not good... do you know since when that reputation started to build? I wonder if I could have known prior to entering the pre-order that the wait could be so long But contacting DLace on their instagram sounds like a plan! (thank you for linking their account) Just to be sure, since I'm pretty non-confrontational and don't want to step on anyone's toes, should I contact BJDivas first regarding how many orders are in-between theirs or can I just contact DLace directlly? I'm not sure what the buyer-dealer etiquette is here (@Tweendoriru of course, I will post here once I know more ^^ I also hope there's a happy ending)
Oh wow yes, 2 years is a long time to wait! I think you've been more than patient. Most dealers wouldn't mind if you asked the artist directly, I'm not sure about BJDivas though, they seem more "sensitive". Good luck on whatever you decide to do!
To be fair, I was just connecting the dots here. There aren't that many artists that keep constantly pumping out new stuff, have long wait times, are extremely difficult to find on the second-hand market, have problems with the caster and fulfilling orders, are handled by dealers etc. DLace is quite the machine for how much he finishes and tinkers around with his works constantly, I just wish his creative output would match his order fulfillment output. The problem though is that most of the time it is a bit out of his hand. He's not the one casting dolls. But I think he should, uh, re-think which of his ideas are actually commercially do-able. Just because you can sculpt one master, does not mean you can easily cast 20 dolls of it. His engineering is just often too elaborate and finicky for that. There's a reason why the first caster at some point threw the towel. And no, I don't think you could have known. A friend ordered the very first Machina girl he did, which took a couple months and had her little faults, but overall nothing too crazy. Afterwards stuff just went really out of hand. He's also not as known or popular as other artists/companies, so there isn't a lot of discussion out there. Honestly, I'd just write him. What the dealer doesn't know won't make them complain. And afaik, your last request where you are on the waitlist wasn't too long ago, and nothing had changed there. Dlace probably knows more than they do about the overall situation
Oh that's interesting, I didn't know that there was a change in caster! Was that around the beginning of his work? But the intricacy of his dolls definitely was what made me join the pre-order back then, it's such a pity that he doesn't seem to have learned from the previous years... then I'll write to him now, thank you for your help! Btw, do you remember what the little faults were back then with the first Ex Machina? Same with the secondhand market, there really aren't many reviews of his dolls, mostly unboxing pictures but no neutral critique I have a secondhand head of one and the inside is reaally rough, was that the case for your friend too?
So uh he replies super fast, yay! The content though is a biit worrying... I will write here what he wrote: "Hi! I am so so so sorry for this. This work is very hard to make a mold. And the situation in China is very complicated. The city is in a lockdown randomly because of Covid-19's...... I am so sorry I didn't know you are still waiting for this. I promise you I will make one as soon as I can. Is that ok I make one in 3 month? I will send it to you in this year, is that ok? I am so so so sorry. It is all my fault. Bjdivas was told me last year, I forget...." The first message was expected, but before I could answer, he sent the rest and if I understand correctly he has forgotten orders?? And would forego the previously expected order that the first person to have ordered gets the first order, just because I contacted him??? I am shocked by this...
Apparently that happened during the time the male Machinas were supposed to be casted. They were too much, and the first caster gave up I don't have all the information there though, I only read about it through a person in the BJD Discord that was waiting foreveeeeer for their male Machina too. They just got him actually, and are still waiting for another doll from him. But they would also pester him personally on Instagram, which is why I said to give it a try. My friend's female Machina came with a broken head mechanism, which was partly due the fact the parts are insanely thin in her head. She did get a replacement head though! The rest was mostly an issue from the dealer (Dolly Planet), who shipped her with minimal padding in a barely fitting box. Apparently things got better afterwards. Regarding his message: eeeeep But it's good you gave him a nudge. Would explain though why nothing moved on the waitlist since then. I'd just take the offer of him, and to keep him by the neck.
Oh I think I might know who that is, someone on the waiting thread here on doa has mentioned that their Male was shipped around July after talking with both BJDivas and Dlace! I think they are also waiting for a 2.0 if I remember correctly ^^ The packaging for the 2.0 is apparently really good, so I hope that except for this waiting, there shouldn't be other issues (fingers crossed) like with the 1.0. I've taken him up on the offer! It shouldn't change much with my plan to only wait until February 2023, since if he delivers within three months that's great, but if not then I'll get the refund in February. So no more wait than expected for now I'll keep you informed!
Little update here on what I chose to do: I spoke to them in January and again in April, each time they said that they needed to make new molds to make more dolls. However, they also said in April, that only one doll was left to make before it was mine's turn! Last week I received the shipping notice and if all goes well she will be here in 1-1.5 months I waited longer than I had planned, but the communication with the artist really helped ease my worries. Seeing how fast the list got smaller and smaller compared to the year before also helped. Thank you to everyone in this thread that helped give me some perspective!
