Contest Photography Contest ~ Recreating the Past

Aug 15, 2014

    1. Congrats to all the winners!:sumomo:

Aw, and thank you so much phanuel, #4 was my entry. It was a photo of an Italian immigrant woman taken on Ellis Island. Hahaha, that scarf....::dies:: I re-adjusted it soooooo many times trying to get the folds to recall the original lay of the scarf. She had little pins tucked everywhere too. Hehe. X.X
By chance, was your entry the one with the smiling "sailor"?

    2. Just LOVED the smiling sailor girl! Everybody did such a good job :D I entered myself for the challenge rather than ever thinking I'd win LOL

    3. Thanks, Teleri, it was fun to be able to use the Miso sculpt for a photo recreation.

    4. Yes, it was a really great sculpt choice! Ah, there were so many mid-century photographs I'd have loved to re-create, but I knew I'd never get the smile, so I was so happy to see that photo. ^___^

    5. I'm baffled at these many cool ideas and talented photographers, I had the hardest time deciding on three entries. If I had a say in this I would have given a price to everyone who took part! :D

When I saw all the fab entries I never dreamt I'd have a remote chance of winning something. I had all but given up even taking part when I considered the vintage props and dress problem until I finally thought of this photo that I've always loved - and spent half of Saturday crawling around an uncooperative doll. ^^;; Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote.

Anyways, congrats everybody taking part, winner or not, for achieving these astounding results! :aheartbea This contest has me itching to see more photos like that. :)

    6. I loved your photo, Ophiaca. ^_^
It was a great choice and you did it so well. Very well deserved.

Oooh, I'd love to see more re-creations too! It was such a fun idea. ^___^

    7. I loved your Jean Harlow too, Phanuel. It made me smile along with her.

I think there is a thread on something like this in the games section (might be artwork generally, though). However, no chat. So, might be worth setting up a thread in the photography section so we can discuss method etc. Might nudge some of us to do this again (like me). I found it to be a very useful exercise, as I never bump the contrast up that high, but it is what the original photo had and looked more punchy than it would have done if I had used my usual approach. So, yes, recreating photos can teach you something worthwhile.

    8. There was a thread about replicating any artwork with dolls--and I loved it! But it became dormant and the last time I looked for it I believe it was closed.

And for those of you on flickr I have a group dedicated to this, "Dolls Imitating Art". I'd love to see any of the contest pics there.

    9. Found that one in the Games section but, as there is no talking allowed in there, it is not as useful as one in the Photography section. I will go and set one up. I would be interested to see what people do and how they do it.

ETA: And here you are. I have gabbled on for ages in there in the hopes that others will tell their secrets too. Fill that thread up! http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?640868-Recreating-art&p=11028478#post11028478

    10. Oops, sorry, I neglected this thread a bit!

Thank you, Lady Ravenswood, that's so nice of you to say! I recognized your motive, I have it in a photo book. A not so easy choice, you did it very well!

I think I'm heading over to the new thread now.
