      Rules

      • The vintage photo must be from prior to the year 2000.
      • You may use a photo from an historical archive, or just ‘Christmas 1989’ in an old family album.
      • You may use multiple dolls.
      • Photos must be sent in JPEG format (.jpg), 800 pixels maximum on the longest side
      • Photos must not bear watermarks, titles or any other information that would point to ownership.
      • Hosting contest photos or photos from the same shoot in a publicly visible photo album will result in disqualification

If you have any questions about this contest that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Prizes

The winner has first choice from the following prizes:

A Freedom Teller outfit (winner's choice from what is currently available for order).

      A face-up by SDink

A pair of custom urethane eyes from DollBakery

An acids and poisons apothecary set from Atrium Hoshino.

Who May Compete for the Prizes?

This contest is open to all members who have joined on or before the date of June 30th, 2014.
Participants must be members in good standing. Members may not participate if they have a marketplace suspension, marketplace ban, unresolved transactions or a paging status.
Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it. It is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests. Tick the box "I am not competing for the prize" on your submission form if you do not intend to keep the prize.

It is possible to participate just for fun, without competing for the prizes. Tick the box "I am not competing for the prize" on your entry submissions. Entries will be displayed along with the competing entries, but will not appear on the voting forms.
Current Den of Angels staff may participate, but are not eligible for prizes.
Members who have won prizes in past photography contests may participate for fun, but they are not eligible for a prize in this contest.
Recast supporters may participate for fun using on-topic dolls, but they are not eligible for the prizes from these donors.
If you have a question about your eligibility, please post in Ask the Moderators.

IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest voting has closed will result in disqualification.

      Submission

Contestants must submit the original photo and their BJD recreation photo.

    2. Would we be expected to make a go at reproducing the attire worn in the photo as well? I suppose I'm asking if we're supposed to go for a more exact copy, or if the idea is to recreate the composition (considering lighting/effects/and posing as elements of composition).

    3. Voters will be asked to pick the entry that reproduces the photo most faithfully, so you'll have to balance your choice of photo with your willingness to replicate the details. :)

    4. Are we allowed to use photoshop effects to help make the photo look older more vintage and things like that? Normally the rules state minimal photo editing, but I didn't spot anything. I wouldn't be using much else in PS because my skills aren't great.

    5. Does it have to be a photograph or could it be an old advertisement?

    6. Are you supposed to submit both a copy of the vintage photo and your version or are they supposed to be a collage?

    7. Are you only allowed to use a historical photos and/or holiday photos, or just /anything/ pre-2000? I wasn't sure as it seemed rather specific. @.@

    8. I am interested in how the voting criteria are to be interpreted. Two concern the faithfulness of reproduction (lighting, composition, posing). One concerns the originality of concept. How do these things go together? You either copy the photograph accurately, which has no originality, or you produce your own interpretation, which is not faithful to the original. Seems that the two conflict.

I am also struggling to reconcile pre-2000 with the term "vintage". I am assuming you don't actually mean vintage, just a photograph that was taken pre-2000. Or else the date is wrong.

Or am I just being too literal? Wouldn't be the first time. XD

      Any clarification gratefully received.

    9. Is it possible to clarify what's meant by 'filters used' on the submission form? Is that meaning in the sense of filters in things like instagram and so on? Or your process in editing in photoshop in the sense you want us to describe our editing process?

    10. Yeah, what Mau said. Are you saying that era of vintage of photography of the past starts at 2000? Which doesn't jibe with my thinking about that word which has more to do with something more historically considered. Unless we're making a wine to go along with our photographs. Now THAT would be a contest.....

    11. Well if you think about it before 2000 means that you can easily include the 80's and 90's which did have some iconic things happening during those times, and iconic fashions. So it is still kind of vintage, just people don't always think about it that way.

    12. I believe I have found a photograph to recreate, but it will require photo editing. There aren't any notes about photo editing on here like there are on other contests (aka Triathlon) so I just want to be sure that major photo editing with Photoshop is allowed. Thanks!

    13. I second this query.

    14. Hello - likewise seeking clarification about processing / Photoshop. I'm hoping that the mention of filters on the entry form means that some post-processing is ok e.g. adding grain, converting to black and white. Is it possible to also check about things like adding colouring and scratches (e.g. if the photo is hand tinted or damaged), removing aspects (e.g. cloning out stands used for posing), changing the lighting (e.g. vignetting) - I'm not necessarily planning to do any of these, but it would help to know what's allowable to help choose a photo in the first place! Thanks!

    15. A professional photographer makes all these post processing adjustments in the dark room or digitally. Therefore, to reproduce even a modern photograph, you will also have to process the shot. It would therefore be a nonsense to ask people to reproduce a professional photograph but bar them from the "dark room". I am reading this as meaning that there is no issue with using professional processing methods. But I have no idea what the "filters" thing is in the entry form.

    16. Fliters is i believe, Setting your 'len' or in this case your fliter setting to say black and white instead of the standard color. Most cell/digital camras have fliter settings now so you don't need to use a dark room or colored paper to get the desired affects.

Originality of concept.-this to me, means how interesting is the Original Picture, how challenging was it?how engaging it is.

This is only my thoughts, i'm not a mod.

    17. I am also seconding the question about the relevance of 'vintage'. Will the photo be assessed on how 'vintage' (generally assumed to be 80's and before) it looks? Or is the idea more 'recreate an old nostalgic photo...?'

    18. That makes me a little sad, because it means it is a contest of sewing and prop making, which I'm not so good at. Photography and editing seems to play a minor role.

    19. Correct, arlais! Tell voters how you achieved the style of the photo, whether you ran your photo through Instagram using the 1977 filter, or added lens flare in Photoshop.

It must be a photograph. You can use an advertising photo, but you'll have to leave out duplicating any text.

Submit two separate URLs, one for the original and one for your BJD version.

The rules state that you can use any photo, as long as it was taken before the year 2000.

arlais is correct again. :) This is a way for voters to chose an image wherein they love the idea even if it wasn't necessarily well executed. If someone decided to replicate a shot of drunken college kids leaping into a pool in the middle of the night, that would be a pretty original concept, but it would also be hard to pull off with the same amount of precision as a simple black and white beauty shot.

It's true that those of us who are older balk at the idea of something from the 80s being called vintage, but it really is the case now. So pre-2000 as vintage is coming soon! We just decided to open it up to anything from the 20th century.

It depends entirely on your choice of photograph. A reproduction of a Robert Mapplethorpe would require nothing more than a white background and a naked doll, and yet done well it could be extremely beautiful since it's all about lighting.

    20. This is what I get for Taking photography in college :sweat:sweat:sweat oh gods...I just had the perfect idea!!!!

    21. I did a bad thing. I couldn't decide between 4 photographs so I did them all... and now I don't know which to submit :doh Oops!!

    22. Yeah, I almost did that. Well, I submitted already. I really hope my stupid photo app really made everything private like I told it to ~sigh~

    23. Quick question: Does the vintage photo need to be resized to fit the 800 pixels rule as well? I only ask since I found it on Google... not sure if it matters that much, but I want to be sure!

    24. Meep! All submitted now...I hope it's good enough...the subject of the original photo seems to think it's great, but we'll see what everyone else thinks.

    25. Submitted! ;3; Goodluck everyone!

    26. This is a long shot, but will it be okay to edit the face expression of the doll to make it look a little sad or happy in the photo?

    27. The way I read the rules the size limit is for all photos submitted for the contest.
If you use a photo you found online make sure you have the owners permission to use it.

    28. For some reason I didn't see this contest until last night, so somehow I ended up scrambling and whipped up a photo within 4 hours and submitted it. I'm not sure if I did everything right but it was fun at least! Good luck everyone!

    29. I found a photo that I love! And I think I'll have time among working on Triathlon-y things to enter! I'm excited. Question, though: How do we prove a photo is vintage?

    30. I decided to try this one out^^. I'm excited to see what everyone has come up with.

    31. Submissions are now closed!

    32. I didn't get to this one. Oh, well. I finished my Triathlon entry, though, so I'm happy. I will just have to enjoy this one vicariously through all your hard work while I vote next week. :)

    33. Entries will be posted a bit late due to a technical issue. Thanks for your patience!

    34. I didn't get to enter as I was away on a trip, but this competition sounded SO interesting, I can't wait to see what everyone has done!

    39. Ooh...the suspense is killing me! I think out of all the contests, this one has been the one I've been looking forward to looking at the entries the most.

    40. Will there be an extra day added to the voting since we lost one?

    41. Very anxious to see these entries as mine seem to have flopped over at the Triathlon! :sweat
