I ordered my deertaur! I can't wait to get her in! I'm hoping they release blank versions like they did of the centaurs where you could just get the body since I'd love to mod it into one of my characters!
Pre-ordered a couple of deertaurs today! Just two, maybe I'll get a third later on but two is enough for now.
Hahaha this updated packaging video by Penny Box. You can feel the rage they had over the previous broken horn issues on the dragons: kikagoods on Instagram: "Antu China Dunhuang Nine Colored Deer Series - Packaging Upgrade! Newly added protective plastic, can use it to protect deer horns. Note: This test is only for fragile components.
@Krissim I often wait out on Penny's Box stuff because most resellers price high first due to popularity then lower to something normal (or even a good deal) later when the hype has died down a bit. I ended up benefiting from the updated packaging on the dragons as a result! It really did sound like virtually everyone's dragons were broken in transit.
I preordered one of the deer, and ordered two more centaurs...the centaurs are already on their way, and hopefully they'll tide me over until the deer ships!
I want the Hidden so much but unsure i can justify spending $300 on a $50 bjd lol But i will be ordering some soon i just love the little deers I have a Centaur coming also the little mint one so adorable which are you waiting on?
Forgive the terrible picture, I don't quite have the space to take a good one right now. I just ordered two blind boxes, rather than specific ones - and I got one of the specials! Good Morning, I think? I've never gotten a hidden figure in a blind box before, so that was exciting I'll put her sleeping face on eventually, because it's gorgeous.
I got bitten by the customizing bug, so I ended up ordering two more mermaids and a dragon, and am now staring furiously willing the tracking to update faster so they get here before I lose The Urge. First time in my life I've ever wanted blind box doubles, lmao.
I'm getting ready to order a random mermaid but I want one of the ones that can sit. I'm interested in the tail joints. So glad they're tiny and take up less space.
There's more discussion of more mermaids over in the 1/12 thread, but as somebody with all three (ABS blindboxes, currently available), I would say your best bet is the AIYE Mermaid Island series. They're specifically designed to sit down in the chairs they come with. I think Luckydoll Mermaid Chuchu hits a better right-angle, but is also quite floppy. The Penny's Box mermaids are far better held on a stand vertically, they're not much for sitting.
Hopefully!!! Since it'll involve dyeing and potentially sculpting, which I've never done and need the momentum to outweigh the fear and actually get done, haha. At least it's not a full price bjd i could potentially be ruining i guess (that's what i'm telling myself aaaaaaa)
EEK congratulations thats amazing!! and she is sooo cute!! I would share a pic but no idea how to these days its been a while since i have lol
What sculpting material are you thinking of using? /faq/how-to-post.6/category < if you click the "how to post an image" section it gives a brief tutorial but feel free to shoot me a message if you need help!
Since it's just for the hair, I was thinking cosplay foam clay. I considered epoxy, but these guys are already pretty top heavy, and I wanted something relatively easy to work with. Figured foam clay should be relatively lightweight and easy to repair when I inevitably break something.
Joining the wait for the deertaurs! I just ordered 3. Was tempted to order a full set of 6, but managed to talk myself out of it! I also got two of the dragons second-hand a while back from Dollyteria as I was getting something from there and saw that they had the dragons I was most interested in! One has a broken horn that was disclosed in the listing and the other was undamaged.
Man, the one time I wanted doubles, I didn't get any lmao. I have the weirdest blind box luck. Edited to add, I didn't like that the dragon has inset eyes while the mermaids don't, and i didn't feel brave enough to carve open eyes, so I just swapped faceplates and it's actually pretty cute???
It's super easy 95% of the time. Something they warp and it's tricky, but for all the ones that did this to me a hot water bath helped a lot.
Did you find this reset the shape? One of mine warped due to heat, and the eyes have never gone back in since. It really took the wind out of my sails, and I've not really known how to proceed.
Typically you can just reheat it and unwarp the issue. I would try warming it up, then adding the eyes back while it's still warm. Should be easier to flex them into place. They can also help hold the socket area in the right shape while it cools and hardens back up so you hopefully won't have to do this again.
What Kristin said! Heat, set, then cool down. I've got one hair peice that still fights fitting in place after doing this though, so your milage may very
My deertaurs have arrived! I ordered three but received four, plus 6 extra pairs of special hands and an amulet from Dunhuang Museum (that the deertaurs are a collab for)! I'm so happy that I got the two that I wanted most - the orangey red one (that's the poster girl on the box) and the pink & green one.
Yeah the orangey-red one is the one I want. But I don't much like the blind-box aspect, so I just wait for people to sell them unboxed. I cannot wait to see more pictures and I'm glad to see that all of the horns seem to have arrived safely.
oh that's soo cool! Who did you order through, if you don't mind me asking? My package landed in my city on the 6th... then went to a totally different city on the 7th and is now floating in the nebulous usps system today. I'm not home at least so it wouldn't have mattered regardless but I'm just so baffled.
Through Clover-Singing/Christina. I order quite often from her, so she includes little gifts in my orders from time to time. Never expected an extra doll though!
The deers are lovely, but I think I am going to pass on them. So many companies are making stuff I find I must be increasingly picky if I don't want to end up buried under a pile of dolls.
The easiest way to start with being picky is to have color ways and/or themes you don't like in a doll. I'm not a big fan of yellow and bright orange so if I can't live with the doll(s) with those colors in a set it's easier to pass on them. Also the fat cankle look a lot of these dolls have, or a lack of a minimal amount of jointing, turns me off. For another off topic situation I made do with a batch because they were 3/4 of the way to what I wanted but just this year they finally released someone pretty much on the nose. I didn't know that was going to happen but if I had waited a bit and been more picky all would have been happier.
My gal is here! The box was pretty mangled but the inner packing held tightly at least! (You can see what the box looked like here > https://sgstoybox.tumblr.com/post/756074536292810752/ ) Dream a little dream by SGS Toybox, on Flickr Dream a little dream by SGS Toybox, on Flickr
@SmoteyMote Congrats! She's so pretty! She's the hidden, isn't she? And good thing Penny's Box really reinforced their inner packaging!
She is! Yeah the inner packaging was bent but other than the card being a bit wonky, everything was intact!
Mt deertaur came today I love the Dannie fullset but I did primarily get this for my pukipuki to have a change from being human trying to resist getting another, like the purple or blue hooves...
Oh my gosh this is gorgeous! I was thinking about doing a smaller head so I could do a version of one of my characters and I might just go for it now!
If it is a pukipuki size (or similar) it would work great, completely recommend I also got the dragons (cos I love dragons) and the puki heads look great on those too They use a S hook so no messing around in that department. The deertaur body is very stable with a light puki head... the official deertaur head is large and heavy and destabilises the body posing. So a winwin
I am liking the look of these new body types - at the very least they seem like they'll be more sturdy? And easier to get to stand on their own. (Maybe that's just a me issue)
I saw the deertaurs on KikaGoods today and it was love at first sight! I can easily afford a Set of Three with my doll budget! Woohoo!
@nattherat Thanks for sharing the image! I don't know if it's just me, but these look more sturdy than previous Penny's Box bodies. It'll be interesting to see what designs they come out with.
I was thinking that too. I think we've come a long way since the original Antu and School Haunting bodies, which were cute at the time, but compared to so many dolls on the market now are actually quite flimsy. I can't wait for these new ones!
Ohhhh, I've never been that interested in Penny's Box, but these new Beast dolls might seriously tempt me. I love a good kemomimi design.
Okay, so I did quickly translate the post with the image - via online translator so it is not an exact one, so there will be errors. I think the new body is part of a series that will have 4 general designs and 1 hidden (4+1 is what the online translation gives). It also says they'll be a little larger than previous ones? Again, this is from a online translator browser add-on. If anyone could be clearer, that would be great!
There's more information on this older post which says they're about 15-16cm. You can get an idea of their size because they're using older Antu heads hybrided onto the new beast bodies here, so you can see they actually fit right in. I think "little larger than the previous ones" actually means larger than the original 14cm Antus, but not necessarily any bigger than the modern 19-or-so-cm Antus. I actually spent time yesterday doing housekeeping on the 10-20cm thread and collated as many measurements as I could find across as many dolls as I could find haha. Penny's Box ranges from 14cm up to just shy of 24cm for Antus currently. The bipedal dolls tend to sit at 14cm though, so this is likely what they're referring to. So I think "1/8" and "Larger than previous dolls" are both accidentally a bit misleading, and specifically means larger than series 1/original Antu. I'm pretty sure most of us won't mind this at all, but they might be saying it in case anybody is particularly precious about having their dolls be below 15cm in height and/or matching series 1 Antu. I'm not sure what "mini 1/6" is about though. Maybe some kind of special single release that is an oversized Antu?
Okay, you gave a lot of fantastic information, and I thank you for that, but now all my head can focus on is a 1/6 scale Antu centaur or deertaur. It would be amazing.
Well have I got news for you, haha! Penny's Box is an offshoot of Dollzone, and their little Antus are based on the original 1/6 Antu! Which you can still purchase!
Yup haha. DollZone, Doll Chateau, Dream Valley, Whale Tower, TinyFox, Penny's Box... I have no doubt there's more, both directly related (working as sister studios in the very same building) or new studios from sculptors who were DZ sculptors (like Dream Valley and Whale Tower). All DollZone, all the time, forever DollZone. *insert "It always has been" meme* Edit: I missed Coral Reef. IT'S DOLLZONE? IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN.
