Pear Shaped Trend....how do you feel?

Dec 21, 2011

    1. I find it rather interesting. The aesthetic is something different, but not different at all. As an animator in training, I like to see different body types in proportion to try and work with them. It seems to me that society has focused in on the slimmer female physique as the idea, with the hourglass being the sexual ideal. I like seeing the DC bodies, as they look more adult than Mikhailia (whose sad baby-ish face turned me off immensely) and yet are gangly and artistic.

To each their own, you know?

    2. The more body types, the better. Different silhouettes create more of a distinction between characters and different proportions can suit different personality types. I don't think they're any more exaggerated than most of the female dolls that I've seen- the heroic proportions and pinched waist hourglass figures don't exist in the real world. I haven't seen one with a face that I like though.

    3. I think the only one OP listed that I didn't like was Leeke World Mikhala. I find it very unsettling to look at. As I think someone mentioned in an earlier reply, it's not far enough proportion-wise in either an unrealistic or realistic direction to be appealing to me, personally. I really like DC's bodies though. They're my favorite out of the list as everything about their bodies are exaggerated.

    4. I personally don't like them at all. But to each their own.

    5. i really like them personally... but i'd rather have a doll that's both pear shaped and chubby... you don't see that much of these... they usually only look like wide

    6. They're not to my liking, sadly. I find the thin torso and wide hips to be grossly mismatched, and that's a huge turn-off.

    7. I honestly don't see what the big problem with them is. Our dolls already have oversized heads, unrealistic leg length and face proportionality, disproportionate hand size, inflated breasts, weird ribs on otherwise healthily sculpted dolls, etc., so why are so many people having a hard time accepting a body type that actually exists if not for our society's andro-centric conditioning to see a woman's beauty in our societal standards as her worth, which has been proved time and agan.

      *cough*

I am a woman who has very large hips/butt relative to the rest of my body, including bust, and while I have been both grossly oversexualized AND harrassed for having an "ugly" body (you really can't please everyone, can you?), being able to have a beautiful doll with nicely exaggerated proportions similar to mine, and seeing such support for this type of doll makes me feel validated as a person; so I guess it's just really problematic when so many people think these dolls are "grotesque" or "misshapen" because jeez... that could be someone's body type you're insulting!

    8. I see no problem about it. I guess I easily accept everything, I think it's just an expression of art. Not everything must be 'realistic'ally close to our body..
I wouldn't want to buy it though. Even if it's pear shaped, it must be good proportioned, but that's just my taste =)

    9. I love them, absolutely love them. I draw pear shaped figures all of the time because that is my ideal figure on a woman. Wide hips are so womanly and glamorous to me, pair it with a small waist and it just looks wonderful! Hourglass is not for me at all! I don't like large breasts, broad shoulders or a wide ribcage so I don't want those on my doll(well one is busty but she'll be the exception). This isn't the real world, so we're allowed to have a doll with any figure we like! Mine is pear, and I'm so, SO happy that companies offer dolls with this beautiful shape. :D

    10. You said everything I was thinking! I lean a little pear-shaped myself, and even though I obviously don't look like the Leeke Art Body girls or a DollChateau, I somehow take it a little personally when people say the body shape looks gross. But people in this hobby have vastly different tastes, and just because I happen to really like the big butt look on dolls, it doesn't mean anyone else *has* to buy one of those dolls.

Anyway, I don't have much to add, just that I think the pear-shaped dolls have a beautiful, sensual look and I think if you are going to make a stylized doll (literally all BJD are stylized anyhow), it's not a bad way to go. I like seeing a variety of body types in the BJD world and I hope we see more of other shapes, especially for female dolls, because there is a sort of cultural significance to what doll companies make and what we elevate as the ideal female form. I'd really like to see more unconventionally beautiful shapes- fat dolls, muscular girl dolls, girls with bigger tummies and thighs. Meanwhile I think the "pear shaped trend" is encouraging.

    11. They aren't really my taste, but at the same time I can appreciate them. They look very artistic to me. At this point, I've mostly seen the blank dolls, undressed. (I'm new. ) I'd be really interested to see some of them fixed up.

    12. I'm really glad they have them. Growing up I was thin as a rail, no breasts, giant hips and butt. My mother-in-law was very impressed with the dolls that are pear shaped. (I think she had the same shape growing up too). It's nice seeing dolls that look like actual people instead of a perfect cookie cutter.

    13. I at first was not a fan but recently have been looking at the Leeke World Mikhaila and am in love with her and would jump at her in pure rose skin. I am a super fan of the pear shape trend, so cute and squishy!

    14. I loooove the pear shape girls! I really like the aesthetic of a big bottom and a skinny waist. :3 I probably wouldn't own many of the very stylised dolls myself, but I have a few of the more "realistic" pear-shape girls on my wish list.

    15. I'm not really a fan of the pear shaped bodies but my friend owned a Mikhala and he said it was really difficult to find clothes for her...and as a result he didn't use her much. They don't really attract me either to be honest...

    16. Pear shape? Lav it! :D Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing some dolls with some actual meat on them...meat that isn't muscle. I've never once been overweight or underweight in my life, and I get so dreadfully tired of seeing only two body types idolized in the world. What I wouldn't give for more diversity amongst dolls too! I have so many character ideas that I want to embody in BJDs, but am reluctant because they come in all different shapes and sizes, from short and malnourished to towering and morbidly obese.

I have a Leekworld Ariana currently, and while we're not exactly bonding, it is definitely not an issue over her body. Even if I do end up selling her, I foresee myself owning more Leekeworld resin. It takes a bit of scrounging, but there are artisans out there who make gorgeous clothes for them. They have such wonderful curves, and I like the fact that we can chose between a busty girl or a non. If SQlab wasn't so darned expensive, I'd buy one of their Yamato bodies for my incoming DIM Marcellina head in a heartbeat! It's adorably chubby next to other SD girl bodies.

    17. I would love to see some bodies that are larger (55-60cm) and are actual realistic depictions of fat distribution on an overweight or obese person, either male or female. What I have seen are bodies that are small, and have pear-shaped torsos with slender limbs. There are a couple of tiny dolls that have a realistic depiction of an obese body (Fat Fairie, one artist doll on The Joint). There are no male dolls that display obese bodies. There are no larger female dolls that display realistic depictions (with fat distribution continuing into the limbs) of obese bodies in either male or female. There is one 60cm female obese doll, Sharmistha, with slender limbs (large in the torso and upper thighs only). There is one 45cm female doll with a "curvy" torso (Freakstyle Salome) and slender limbs (and unlike the 60cm doll, in this one the sculpt is consistent, so the distribution of weight looks realistic).

    18. I agree with this whole-heartedly! And I had never heard of Freakstyle Salome, but she is gorgeous IMO. I want her. :) The distribution is better than all I've ever seen.

As for the pear shaped...most of the time I'm more indifferent. It's mostly about the head sculpt for me. But, I did fall victim for the DollChateau. I'd love a MSD mature female body with a Charles head. The fantasy lankiness of it all takes me to a whimsical place. I'd have a blast blushing and faceupping her into some sort of otherworldly creature. It removes my mind from what's real so I can truly take liberties.

    19. This. So much of this. Why do we always see heavier tinies when we do see curvy dolls at all? Salome is gorgeous, and I wish her the very best release, but she's still under 50cm. There are a couple of companies out there(Their names elude my mind) with bodies that look ever so slightly heavier than the average resin boy or girl, shirtless/in a croptop and placed next to other dolls. But that's really it, and it's not like they are really any different by themselves, or with clothes on.

...That rant being over, I do love Sleeping Elf's Coco and Bonbon. I don't own either myself, but they are oh so sweet! And their faces are very versatile, making terrific boys or girls.

    20. also agreeing! The non-slim dolls all are tube shaped. Although it'd be hard to make/fit clothes to a body that had love handles and rolls. The crevices would need to be deep enough for crop tops or jeans to look like they were muffin topping, which is hard to do with a mold that is used for mass production.

I'd really love to see something like the Leekeworld Art volume body in a 50cm size. Because if you're breaking the standard size, you may as well break the standard height. Then I could have my bubbly, squat, rollypolly girl. :D

    21. Being a pagan, and something of an armchair anthropologist, I have to say they remind me of a lot of the pictures I've seen of fertility statues produced by various ancient cultures.

Also, they look a lot like the cover art I saw, when I stumbled across several issues of what was apparently some type of Japanese men's pornographic magazine, for auction on Mandarake. A magazine that seemed to cater to men with a taste for Lolita type females with exaggerated pear shaped bodies.

I personally don't find dolls with this shape attractive or appealing, just as I don't find dolls with hourglass figures or ridiculously enlarged breasts attractive or appealing.

      To each his own. ^_^

I'll stick with my lovely, slender, androgynous, mostly boy, dolls. Thank you. I'll leave the 'pears' for others to pick! ^_~

    22. i dont like them at all and i think they kinda look ugly.. BUT thast just me.. i will never own one thats for sure

    23. I love them, but then again I really want to have diverse body types in my collection. I'm waiting for a plus sized doll.

    24. I really really like the Pear shaped bodies. Especially the Doll Chateau and Leeke World bodies. They are very cute! :aheartbea

    25. I really like them but I wouldn't own one the clothing is a killer to find for some of them :)

    26. I'm personally a big fan of Doll Chateau thou. But the bigger ones are more.. slim pear-shaped? I really like the bodies. Not the little ones, but the bigger slim ones. Although clothing them can be a real pain indeed :XD:

    27. I find it refreshing to see other body types like the pear-shape; I bought a DZ Mika for that reason. I'm just the type of person that likes to see a variety of body types and like to see how different companies create them.

    28. I love it! :love Dollzone and Dust of Dolls are some of my favorite companies because of their adorable hips. I also really love the new FL Moe body, which has a sort of less-stylized pear shape to it. I am super picky about bodies and I don't like it if the hips are too narrow. The A-line bodies are actually what put me off from ever buying a MNF, but with the new M-line.... Well, the fact that I now have reason to post in the FL waiting room speaks volumes haha.

    29. I quite like it, though I don't know if I'd ever own a doll with that kind of body.

    30. As a pear shaped girl, myself....I love this!!! It's good to see an expansion of body shapes compared to the limited choices from, say, five years ago.

    31. I really want to see some pear-shaped SD girls, being a tall pear shaped girl myself. I think that pear-shaped dolls are a great trend because they are an example of the diversity of body shapes among women. If companies see that people are willing to buy curvy sculpt dolls then they too might start making curvy doll bodies that are more accessible to the rest of the hobby :)

    32. I'm okay with the pear shape integration because it is actually something more common for females who have widened hips. The popular hour glass look is not nearly as common. But it would be really cool if a company made several kinds of body types. Thin and tall, or plump and wide, ect.

    33. I love the pear shape. I prefer small bust and the dolls with some bottom to sit on. I like the DC dolls and I've just received my first FreakStyle Eve and just love her shape. There is a pear shaped Dust of Dolls girl coming to me too so I guess I really like the shape. But then on the other hand I like the thin one's too and the boys which have to have some shoulders to please my eye.

    34. I think they're cute. I don't know if I'll ever buy one, but they really are adorable.

    35. I'm all for pear shaped dolls, I love them~! <3 But some dolls just pull it off better then others~

    36. The more I look at them, the more I am falling in love with the pear-shaped DCs. While I have no clue how/where I'll ever find anything to wear for them, I am at a point where I am seriously thinking about not just getting one (Zora) but two (not yet really decided, maybe an SD size)...

    37. I think they're adorable. But then again, I love the fantasy-type dolls that look surreal or just exaggerated. That's one of the things I love about BJDs - there's something for everyone.

But I would also love to see more curvy/plump dolls in general.

    38. I really love them. I have two dolls with the Leeke Art body B. The minute I got the first one, I started looking to see what other companies made something similar. I actually love pretty much all the artsy shapes, the wide hips of the pear shape, the lanky thinnesss of DC, any tyoe of body that looks like it stepped out of a painting. Since I only collect YoSD or smaller, they can be harder to find though!

    39. A lot of my characters are very hippy (mostly down to my drawing style) so I LOVE the wide hipped BJDs, there was one ...Orange tea? or something which looked like a Pullip with hips WIDER than the oversized head XD she was glorious! Indie made but cute none the less. Very sort of, short stack/ betty boopish but with the biggest bootay ever XD Made me smile.

    40. For me, it depends a lot on the doll itself? Some seem like too much hip to handle and others are pretty well perfect. Imma have to get my hands on a couple and see how I feel after that lol x3

    41. Iplehouse dolls are having a realistic body features, their hips should not consider large hips as you mentioned, unless you are comparing it to the ridiculously slim hips of dolls such like feeple 65 and such

    42. I'd love to own a pear shaped BJD one day! Just not one with extremely wide hips.

    43. I forget if I responded to this. I LOVE the pear sculpts. Especially since "pear" means so many different things. There's just something really graceful about them. The more variety of body types in BJD's the better. Pear is a great start.

    44. Pear is the new black

    45. I like the pear shape visually at least the Leeke World Mikhala but I would never buy one cause making clothes would be a nightmare. At least that is my opinion. They just make me nervous about finding them outfits and making them things cause their shape is so different. But I like them visually.

    46. I LOVE pear shaped bodies ! I don't have any on my wishlist now, but I love this "Dust of Doll-like" aesthetic (because let's not forget that the Leeke art body is a copy of Dust of Dolls bodies), I think it's very fun, original and pretty !

    47. I'm absolutely in love with them, whether the curves are realistic or really cartoonishly proportioned. As a 'pear-shaped' woman myself I wholeheartedly approve of this trend. :)

    48. I have a DollPamm, not a Leeke, but she's quite pear-shaped, and honestly, I haven't found it all that awful to make her clothes. She's a little more uniquely shaped than the others in my collection, yes, but I know her top half is roughly YO-scale (a bit smaller, really), and her bottom is roughly MSD-scale (a bit shorter, though), and from that I can typically pull something together fairly easily that'll fit her nicely. I've even managed outfits for her from existing pieces, that have fit quite nicely, though that's been more a matter of luck.

    49. Sorry I hope I didn't offend, thank you for the info though. I am still trying to learn to sew for the sizes I have and I am about to break into SD, I guess personally unconventional sized dolls make me nervous cause I am not confident in my sewing skills. I do love the pear shape and its not super pear shape but the Fairyland Moeline dolls have a wonderful curvy figure and I love sewing for them sometimes and sometimes not cause sizing can be a bit interesting

    50. I love the shape of Leeke A and Doll Chateau, I think they are truly beautiful. Chateau was the first I saw and I have been in love with some of them for some time now, I just dislike how skinny some bodies are, it seem they got skinner with time. I specially like male characters with this body type so I plan to add them soon to my family.

    51. No worries, I didn't take any offense! Honestly, I was concerned about finding clothes for Razzy when I decided to order her, myself, but have been pleasantly surprised that she hasn't been the challenge I expected, so I thought I'd offer up that information here as well. :) (And those MNF M-Line bodies are just lovely to work with, aren't they?)

    52. I really like Mikhailas body, but I´m not a fan of her face. She looks so sad. She has been growing on me though, so I might just have to get her someday.
I´ve also been looking at Ninon from Lillycat Cerisedolls on the cartoon body. I love their exaggerated look, because they seem so different from other BJDs.

    53. I really like Dollpamm, Cerisedolls and Doll Chateau dolls with pear-shaped bodies too, but don't like Leeke Mikhaila. I thinks it is either because I prefer dolls with exaggerated features, while Mikhaila has a more realistic body, or maybe I'm just biased because I really dislike Mikhaila's company pictures and these are the only ones I've seen.

    54. I like the pear shape, though I don't own a doll with one yet. My only caveat is that I don't like the doll looking too 'young'. I don't like it if the face and/or bust look too childlike with the pear shape, it just doesn't seem to match.

    55. I like wide hips, but if I can take an actual pear and place it next to the doll- and the doll is wider, I wouldn't care for it. The more natural the shape is, the more I'd like it.

    56. I've always liked the pear shape for girls, but after shopping around for my first and only girl BJD, it finally dawned on me just how important it was that my girl has this softer figure. I'm pear-shaped myself so I honestly think that might have had some influence over that. Although I was on a budget, most bodies I found within it were very thin all around, often with larger breasts. Sometimes they looked so thin one could see their ribs or hipbones. I really wanted something a little fuller looking, and ultimately it was worth it to spend a little extra on a body that really suited my needs and I wound up with a very pretty Asleep Eidolon 1/3 body.

Very exaggerated proportions, whether it be an extreme pear, extreme thinness, and anything between, unsettle me.

    57. I don't particularly like the pear shaped doll bodies, especially on females. I find them gross and a little weird. Maybe it's because they're a little more realistic than the usual hyper skinny dolls with big boobs...I like my dolls to look unrealistic. If I want realism I'll look in the mirror; my dolls are supposed to be a standard of absurd cartoonish beauty that humans can't achieve

    58. Love it, it's adorable! I'm obsessed with crazy huge hips and thighs. The Leekeword N-type body is just so amazing, I hope to own it one day. :D

    59. I wasn't a fan in the beginning. But, I recently purchased a DC Stacy and I love her! I also like Dust of Dolls and wish I could get one of the tinies. And, for the record, I don't have a pear shaped body. I'm an apple. LOL!
