Pear Shaped Trend....how do you feel?

Dec 21, 2011

    1. For a few months now there's been an increasing number of pear-shaped dolls I've been seeing that non-artisan doll makers have been making. My guess would be in an effort to make them more "unique" or artisan looking? When I'm talking about pear shaped trend I don't mean normal shape but the REALLY exaggerated shape.

Perhaps some of these have already been around but I just missed them before (well, some I know for certain are newer....)

By pear shaped I mean dolls with really wide hips (ridiculously wide....). Not dolls like EID girls because they're more hourglass shaped even though they do have large hips, I'm talking the artistically disproportionate type. (since we already have the ridiculously big and perky boob thing going on!)

Sculpts that are REALLY pear shaped:

      - Leeke World Mikhala
      - AOI Tuki bodies
      - Doll Chateau (boy and girl bodies)
      - some of the custom GO bodies on here
      - Unoss

Can you think of any more? Also what are your thoughts and feelings on them? I know some people fall over backwards in adoration of them while others are "over it".

    2. I, personally, am not a fan of them at all. I'm all for heavier female dolls, but the pear shape just doesn't do it for me. If the waist and bust were proportionate with the hips and thighs, I'd probably love the idea, but I just don't like the unrealistically tiny bust on a such a big bottomed doll. I'm much more attracted to a large bust, but even that has it's limits for me.

    3. I myself am kind of pear-shaped. xD I'm just a fat pear-shape. And I like the unrealistic exaggeration of the silhouette they have. I especially love Doll Chateau' s body. I think they're beautiful.

    4. I find them cute and amusing, though they're too much like my own figure, LOL! Currrently I have no plans to add any of those sculpts to my resin crew, but, never say never... ;)

    5. Aoi Tuki and Unoss have been around for years, they're just rather rare.

    6. I knew UNOSS was older but I saw an AOI TUKI at a doll meet in October and was like "What the heck is that company?", plus I know it's just one girl in japan who just casts on demand xD...

Ok now for my opinion xD

I'm an hourglass shaped female (with meat on me but still I'm happy i'm not a pear....) so maybe that's why I don't like the shape that much...minus doll chateau..

I personally like it best in Anthros, I've seen a few artists who make really gorgeous ones, but on the human dolls it's not my thing... I think they just look weird with clothing on....

    7. I like some of them more than others. For instance, I like Doll Chateau a LOT. They are more stylized - they have those twig-like arms and legs that I think are awesome; it makes them seem like out of a fairytale and otherworld-y.
For the more realistic ones like Leeke Mikhaila, I am not so keen on them - their arms, upper torsos and lower legs look realistic, but the way they merge the big pear bottom to the rest does not strike me as realistic enough, nor are they unrealistic enough for my tastes.

    8. I like small bust and wide hips, but some of them are kinda scary, like Leeke World's art body ;; I loovvveeee Doll Chateau bodies though :aheartbea

Edit: Exactly what AirimirOfGondor said :"D.

    9. Not my thing. Don't like looking at them at all.
I only collect boy dolls, so hips are a sorta feature-non-grata around here anyway. :XD:

    10. Um, excuse me, but the Unoss is NOT pear shaped. Masamichi got mine for me back in the day when Volks made them.

      Chest = 22.5cm
      waist = 16.5cm
      HIPS = 26cm

    11. I like the pear shaped dolls, but they seems to lend themselves more toward a very specific style. Leekeworld Mikhala looks adorable in bell shaped lolita dresses and poofy skirts, but very very strange in pants ><. Though since I have a similar shape (Though not so extreme, and more close to a large hour glass in certain outfits) I find I also look better in skirts than pants. Though that could also be my preference haha

    12. I like it with DC's dolls. Any other bodys I haven't really liked when it comes to the pear shaped thing.

    13. I generally like the pear shape, in both dolls and real women. I always wished I had a bigger butt. So this trend is right up my alley.

    14. Totally hate them. My doll collecting is all about fantasy - thin whispy fairies, women that can wear clothing that I would love to wear in real life. Why would I want a doll with the same features I despise on myself?

    15. I absolutely adore it. Though, it took the Doll Chateau dolls for me to REALLY fall for it. I LOVE their bodies. The female body especially blows me away, though I love how kind of sensual it makes the male body. Because of the DC dolls I bought, I ended up buying the Leekeworld Art Body as well, just with an OT head. :D I hope it'll lead the way to more body sculpting variety but, then again, I think the reason these dolls are so popular at the moment, besides the fact they are new, are because they aren't QUITE an accurate representation of the pear shape. In a way, they are almost fantasy-like, especially the DC dolls. Either way, I really do love them. Though, to be honest, I'm not sure I'd want to see EVERYONE start doing it. I love them now but I don't want to get sick of them.

    16. I like them as I'm shaped that way myself....small ribcage, small waist, big hips.

I could totally see getting a DZ moment body for a future doll!

    17. Not something that interests me, I dont dislike nor like it! I think it would be harder getting clothing for the pear shaped dolls I imagine.

    18. I'm not terribly into girl dolls at any rate, but I can't see myself ever getting one of these pear-shaped dolls. I'm pear-shaped myself, and I don't buy dolls that resemble me in any way. I also find some of them are a more extreme mixture of child and adult than is usually seen in BJDs. I don't care for large-breasted dolls, either.

    19. I think it really depends on the doll...

Doll Chateau's body is so different in their very lanky form and the pear shape is a lot more artistic and sublte that I like it a lot more then any pear-shaped doll I have ever seen.
If you look at pictures of Mikhala and DC Bella next to each other, it's very extraordinary how different they are.

When I first saw DC's dolls I really liked them for their pear shape, but now that I saw comparison with the extreme (Mikhala), I really do not see why they should be in the same category xD

    20. The more exaggerated the 'pear' shape, the more I shy away from it.

I enjoy cartoons and playing with proportion, size and shape. However, I can't stop myself from expanding beyond the mere aesthetics and thinking about the cultural implications of a doll with very exaggerated features.

i.e. thinking about a doll with impossibly large breasts from an 'artsy' standpoint vs. a 'cultural' standpoint. Artistically, I think the proportions don't work and that the doll should fall over. Culturally, it comes across to me as highly sexual and a bit offensive - thou I am well aware that my opinion is very much based on my personal life experiences and has nothing to do with the intent of the doll company or the owner.

So, when I look at a doll like the Leeke Mikhala, I can't help but wonder about the child-rearing aspect of having large hips, and what her sad face implies about that. She is far from being a 'fat' doll.

Doll Chateau - very interesting silhouette again, but my mind veers towards thinking about super models or people who are underweight or who have medical conditions. However I also think about Aeon Flux, a cartoon show that used to come on MTV, so I connect the bodies with feelings of being dark and twisted.

I think its fun that ABJD are becoming more 'artsy' and increasing in variety.

    21. I'm very 'meh' on them. I don't care much either way because I generally don't like girls and most of the bodies are female (except a couple). And the one girl doll I do want isn't that shape anyhow so it doesn't really make a difference. I see them and go "Meh." and move on with my browsing.

    22. I didn't care much one way or the other when I first saw them, though I ended up liking Fly Mikhaila so much that her body type grew on me. I also love the odd, stylized DC bodies does, pear shapes included. <3

For the most part, I don't see that a pear-shaped body would make me any more likely to go for a particular doll, if I didn't like its other features, but I wouldn't avoid it either. I do like having variety among my dolls, so I'm just glad that different body types are available.

    23. I really love the pear-shaped bodies. They are so graceful and beautiful! The only problem so far is that I don't seem to like the faces that come with them... I don't like Leeke's Mikhaila, and the DC dolls' female face sculpts don't make me go "want!" at all yet... Unoss is difficult to buy (have never seen one for sale), and I am not really a fan of her neither. The only one of the ones mentioned so far that I really liked by the face sculpts were the Aoi Tuki dolls, but buying them seems a bit complicated (the website is too confusing for me and I don't speak Japanese... ).

There are also some independent artist's dolls that have this shape. I really love Enaibi's dolls, they are pear-shaped too ^^ And Püns by Dust of Dolls! Those two are actually my personal favourites from all the pear-shaped dolly goodness out there. But once again, rather difficult to obtain.

Oh, almost forgot - a doll on my wishlist has a bit of a pear-shape too, despite being a boy - Musedoll App. The female counterpart, Phai, also has an immature version of the pear-shaped body, though much less exagerrated than DC or Leeke's Mikhaila.

    24. I have a head on a smaller bust Aoi-tuki body and love it. It isn't terribly exaggerated; she just has heroic hips and legs, like a Frazetta girl. I don't much care for the more extreme types. I like the Doll Chateau girl faces, but dislike the girl body, so have ordered one on the boy body and plan to mod off his boy parts. I do like that there are more and more types of bodies to choose from, even if I don't buy them myself.

    25. Is UNOSS already considered pear-shaped?

    26. I LOVE the pear shape! I'm more an hour-glass in real life, wide hips and bust etc. but I really envy the ladies with wide hips and small waists and busts, I think it's the most gorgeous body type :D.

Naturally I love girl dolls that look like that too! For me, the Aoi Tuki body is perfection and I'd get one if it weren't so difficult to get ahold of!! Big busted dolls are very boring too me as are the typical hour glass, I definitely would like to see more realistic pear girls (not Mikhaila levels of extreme though.)

    27. I'm not a huge fan, but I like how there are some stylized sculpts out there for people who like it.

I actually have a love/distaste thing for Doll-Chateau dolls. I first think: freaky!!! and then I start to love them. *_*

I don't tend to like the pear shapes if they are meant to look a bit like real people. I think the uncanny valley thing comes into play there, with me. I might get a pear-shaped doll--BUT they won't be human. They'd be some kind of elf or goblin or fantasy creature...

    28. don't like it.
IMO the doll-chateau dolls still look decent because I think it's still somewhat realistic and I rather like it. but Mikhaila is waayyyyy to much for me! I dunno, it just look so awkward in most clothes! I don't even think these two dolls should be in the same category as their styling is very different!

and unoss... really? she's super hourglass shaped, but not a pear!
I would've just put Mikhaila and dust of doll pün as exemples! they both have the super wide hips, flat chest and very narrow shoulders.

    29. I love it. I am a huge fan of exaggerated proportions (assuming it looks good together - I'm never going to be a fan of realistic bobble heads) and different body types/shapes so I really enjoy the fact that there's more out there than hour-glass. I have a friend with both Mikhaila and DC Bella so I've gotten to see both of them up close and they're even better in person. I really hope that other companies jump on this bandwagon...not necessarily with another pear-shape, but just different body types. I really like to see different things in this hobby, it stays fresh that way...

    30. The main reason I don't like Leekeworld's Art Body is the jointing on the legs, it makes me hate seeing them naked. Yes, they're cute when they're dressed up in little frocks and all sorts that hide the awkward looking leg/hip joint that makes her look like she is wearing thigh-high flesh boots, but I can't handle the naked doll look for her.
Cerisedolls Eugenie on the other hand is a masterpiece! and I really hope to own one one day.

So I guess I am a general fan of the pear-shape idea just not necessarily of the way some companies have executed it.

    31. 110% Not My Thing... But then, I'm sure my own CP dolls are 110% not someone else's thing, so to each their own.

    32. I hate them. Natural pear shape is fine, but the exaggerated pear is ugly to me and I will not own one.

    33. I do like the DC female doll body especially and would love it if there were more options for dolls with such small breasts. I always end up doing breast reduction mods on my dolls when I get them and so it would be nice to have at least a couple of options where that wouldn't be needed:)

    34. :? She sure doesn't look it to me, either. Unoss has a smallish bust & superheroic honkin' thighs, but she's built more like an R. Crumb girl than a pear.

    35. I am not for or against the exaggerated pear shape per se but I do not like it on dolls that otherwise look like children. Childbearing hips are supposed to be sexually attractive to a mate, I don't think barely pubescent looking girls should have that shape in an exaggerated way. Much too sexualized looking for their face types and presentation.

I don't consider the Aoi Tuki or Unoss to be made in the exaggerated pear shape at all. They are to my eye older teen or adult female dolls with heavy hips and thighs. Like a super heroine or a pro-wrestler.

    36. I would rather not have a doll with such a freakishly large pelvis. I've seen a couple that I thought were sort of cute, but even then I still just imagine if they were a living creature, and that having a giant pelvis would be very painful and awful and they could barely fit anywhere and... ugh. I'm talking about the really exaggerated "art" types. I don't even think UNOSS is comparable to the really over the top "pears".

    37. Don't like them - they look so disproportionate to me that they seriously creep me out. And I'm usually not easily creeped out (except for snakes - real live snakes are scary).

    38. I'm not getting Unoss being pear-shaped, either. She's got some thighs on her, but that doesn't=pear-shaped as I understand the term. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the really exaggerated pear shape (more realistic ones? fine. Lower bopdies three times the zize of the upper bod? not so much), nor of some of the hip jointing on pear-shaped dolls I've seen. Elsii said exactly what I was thinking-the Leekeworld body's jointing does look like thigh high flesh boots. :/ I understand stylisation, but some of it is truly ridiculous. I actually find the DC kid doll bodies a bit creepy/disturbing. In general, I'm definitely not a fan of the exaggerated child-bearing hips on an otherwise childlike doll.

    39. I don't really like the pear shaped dolls in general, nothing specific, I'm just a normal body type of person ^^" But what has been bothering me a little about the trend is that a lot of companies are following suit. It started with what I think was Dust of Dolls Puns, then Leeke World Mikaela and now other companies are following suit. It just doesn't seem as special anymore.

I would like to exclude Doll Chateau though, they are in my opinion a whole new type of creative. Their molds are very different in my opinion. Especially the bodies.

    40. Yeahhh, I don't really like it. I enjoy looking at DollChateau dolls but ones like Mikhalia (sp?), I do not like it at all. Just for the aesthetics reasoning, really, but also they couldn't fit a lot of bought clothes.

I like them in the way that they add to the variety of ABJDs, and of course, if someone likes them, that's their deal. But I don't ever plan on adding one to my collection.

    41. I love the concept of pear-shaped dolls ^^; Some companies don't necessarily execute the idea as well as others, but I'm fine with it. With Puns and Mikhaila, I love how beautifully shaped the bodies are because to me, they're exaggerated in a way that kind of gives it a childlike essence rather than one of a sexual object. (Of course, then I just get extremely disappointed when they do become sexualized.) However, I'm not so keen on the pear shaped bodies with extremely thin waists or big heads because I feel as though their bodies might snap in half. Doll Chateau dolls are well balanced and proportionate despite being incredible stylized, so they're just really nifty as well <3 (Definitely thinking of getting a Mikhaila and a DC some time in the distant future.)

    42. I love Dc's bodies, but u dont consider them to be pear shaped.
They just look like a super model body to me.
Their tinies have more pear shaped though

I do really like the exaggerated pear shaped bodies as well.
Enaibi's I love. And i really want one

But mikhaila I like the body but not the face. If it was more mature
And i probably wouldnt buy mikhaila anyways because the difficulty in finding clothes to fit.

I love unoss, and would love to own one.
But i dont think she looks pear shaped at all.
She looks just like a bigger version of unoa dolls.

And they look like regular proportioned people to me.

    43. I love them! I'm tired of plain human dolls. I want more exaggeration. All my favorite dolls are all off topic though :(

I have a Cerisdolls and I'm hoping to collect the money for Manon and Loonette when they come out. I would LOVE to get some Enaibi dolls and a Puns but that is the impossible dream. So in the meantime I'm gravitating to Doll Chateau. And hoping Leeke comes out with some more interesting bodies that I like.

    44. I'm with the others that have mentioned that the pear shape is reminiscent of child-bearing hips and this being an attractive features to males (sexually). That's all I can think of when I see them and it's a little unnerving to see those huge hips on a child doll (like Mikhaila). While I find the feature interesting, I would not own a doll like this. It just isn't aesthetically pleasing to me, even if the whole "child-bearing-hips" thing didn't apply.

All I can picture is adorable little Mikhaila swiveling her giant hips around on some Discovery channel show with the narrator saying, "And look, here we have a Mikhaila in the wild performing the mating dance." Ugh! *_*

    45. I only like it on the PUNS .................................................................. (period) :)

    46. I really liked Mikhaila at one point...but then my boyfriend's view of her started ringing truer and truer to me. She was a child with child bearing hips! o_o This was a very cute and pudgy child where all I wanted to do was pinch her cheeks and then when you look down, you see how sexual she is down there. I don't exactly know how to describe it...but lets just put it at...it's too much for me. Had her form not been so exaggerated, she wouldn't have 'crossed the line'.
That's just my opinion though. Take it with a grain of salt ^_~

But...those doll chateau bodies are so graceful! I love how delicate and lithe they are and the hips aren't intrusive to their form. It all blends together so well.

    47. Those big hipped dolls reminded me of the baby fat stage. I didn't think of their hips being child bearing. I just thought it was a doll that had an exaggerrted feature, like feet or the head. Don't really know what to think of them now after reading this thread.

      • x 1
    48. Interesting discussion. I never considered Mikhaila's appearance to look "child bearing," but now that it's been mentioned a lot, I can see where that's coming from. With that in mind I guess I can see where it can put a person off. I like her because she's artistically exaggerated in a way that's cute to me, and I probably see myself wanting her more in the future. But yeah, recently, pear-shaped dolls have been a favorite for me. Doll Chateau is just so lovely. Their lanky bodies are what stole my heart.

    49. So long as these odd pear-shaped bodies don't outright replace the more normal ones, I have not much of an opinion, except that it seems very follow-the-leader-ish. /lacks interest.

    50. It's probably because of the child-sexy hips mix that I find Marty Presents dolls more acceptable -- they look mature, so the hips don't weird me out.

      • x 1
    51. Not my kind of thing as I like child-like cute looking dolls. I think Puns body is done very well and is very refined with nice joints, the other ones which followed the trend are not done as well - some of the heads don't match this body type at all and some of the jointing on these bodies is just awful - some of these dolls don't look deliberately exaggerated but actually deformed. Apart from Dollzone's Moment body - that is a beautifully sculpted body!! I may actually get that one.

I wish at least one company would come up with some nice, well sculpted, quality, non-mature, non-exagerrated female bodies. I have Volks and I have hypermaniac but that about covers that category.

    52. It is interesting that many people think that Unoss is not pear-shaped, just having big/muscular thighs...

In my opinion, a "pear-shape" does imply having big thighs pretty often. Pear-shaped doesn't necessarily mean that the hip bones are much wider than the shoulders, while the ribcage is smaller than the head - it simply means that the fat distribution, muscle shape and bone structure together make the figure resemble a pear rather than an hourglass, apple or stick. Most real life women who have pear-shaped bodies don't have shoulders that are so tiny that their head looks wider than them, so I think Unoss is simply closer to a realistic "pear shape". As is Aoi Tuki.

    53. I don't care for any of the dolls mentioned. I am more attracted to dolls and bodies that have a realistic look, and also a less mature look.

I can in some ways appreciate the dolls mentioned aesthetically but I don't actually really like them.

    54. I love my Mikhaila!~<3 I think the big-bottom look is cute on dolls, it really works for cute poofy dresses! I think it's kinda babyish/child-like :) I'm even getting a Dollchataeu baby(hybrid) to be her little sister! ^^
I'm not into realism at all with any of my dolls, so I say bring on the odd sizes! xD

What I really love is that companies are staring to "experiment" with the human form and relative proportion. Big heads, long arms, skinny legs, big bottoms, tiny waists, four feet. It's all such a breath of fresh air! Even if it isn't to everyone's fancy, I think it's really nice to see some crazy-different dolls. (and the crazy things people will turn them into!)
Just throwing it out there, Dollzone's Moment and Anson have some pretty impressive hips too! ;)

      • x 1
    55. I love the look of them. The photo shoots I've seen them of them are very interesting visually, but that doesn't translate into me wanting to own one.

I can see the appeal of all the varieties of DC dolls but the only ones I would want to own are the thin otherworldly ones.

    56. I've never thought of Mikhaila as a child doll so her particular brand of sexy presentation has never bothered me.

But beyond that....I'm not an ass woman and thus the pear shape doesn't do much for me. My eye is drawn either to slim, stick straight figures or hourglass figures. The no boobs on top, everything down below provokes a meh reaction to me. I also think we've reached the point in the pear shape boom where a lot of them are trying to out pear shape the other and this is leading to the really ridiculous proportions where the doll's hips are 2 and 3 times wider than their shoulders. I don't see myself ever owning one.

Something else will come along soon enough and then everyone will jump on that particular trend bandwagon.

    57. I think that the shape is interesting and strange, but I haven`t seen a doll like that captured my attention enough to think about buying one.

    58. I like pear shaped dolls because I myself am very pear shaped, so I think they're beautiful and realistic. I own a DollChateau body and I could say it's close to being my favorite body!

    59. This. For the love of resin THIS.

I'm all for customization! Bring on the exaggerated body types. I'm even OK with the pear-shaped bodies. There's nothing wrong with some junk in the trunk. But when you stick such exaggerated hips on a YoSD-sized doll with a YoSD/lolita face it sets off my pedobear alarms. You've taken a very sexual image and stuck it on a doll who looks like she's 8 years old. (Leeke topped it off by putting her in pants with a hole right above her crotch.)

    60. Honestly, it has no impact on me, because my entire collection is based on the 1/3 scale. I don't collect mini or tiny dolls, and since no 55cm+ dolls have been released that have this shape, I haven't considered buying any of the pear-shaped dolls that have come out.

However, I would LOVE to see a large doll with this same shape. I'm really dedicated to diversity in body styles in my collection, and would love to add a realistic (not so exaggerated as to be cartoony) pear-shaped female to the bodies I already have. Depending on available skintones, I have a couple of different heads I would use on such a body.
