I ordered an OurGeneration (Battat) horse a while ago as a ride for my Iplehouse FID girl. It's the Boho horse, and it came in dark brown with white hair (and a couple of barbie pink extras I had no use for). These horses come in a jointed and a normal version, and I believe the Boho horse is one of those closest to the original Battat sculpt. Project blog posts on my blog: ResinRapture: Equestrian challenge part one ResinRapture: From OurGeneration horse to buckskin Lusitano - customizing a horse part two This is the original horse in brown. The small one in the front is a Breyer Classic, just to get you an idea of the size. To get off the original brown paint I used 90 %isopropyl alcohol, and with that size it was quite a bit of scrubbing. The plastic underneath was either brownish from the beginning or the paint discoloured it, I can't really tell. It was lighter in parts, so I guess it was the latter. This picture was taken before I finished cleaning it, but the chocolate colour is the basic colour of the material. I wasn't sure what to do with him first, I love dapple grey horses, but every second model horse repaint seems to be dapple grey. So I decided to turn him into a buckskin Lusitano. They are Portuguese horses that are not really that big and have a head that actually looks a bit like this, very high eyes close to the front. And I gave him a few dapples too, along with a base coat with a golden sheen. This is the finished paintjob before I added mane and tail. I used golden - beige acrylic colour for the base coat and black pastels for the dark parts. It's lighter in real life, but the weather has been so crappy that the light isn't getting any better. Finished horse with mane and tail. The hair is made of straight BJD hair wefts in black and silver grey, and I made it a bit wavy by braiding it and using boiling hot water to change the form. I made a halter, too. It has eye lashes, too, but with the light they don't really show. Same for the golden sheen. I will take better picture when the weather is better. And a saddle. Still working on the tack. Please excuse the quickly cut pad. I just made it to put it on the horse and avoid direct contact. I'll make a proper one.
Wow...this is amazing. I have quite a few of these horses for my BJDs, I wish I had your talent to make them look so amazingly realistic.
You are so talented! What a wonderful color. His mane & tail suit his shape. He does look a bit Lusitano. I love your tack - nice detail.
I've been wanting to pick up a jointed mygeneration horse for my dolls, even though it wouldn't make sense for any of them lol You did an amazing job!! I love the little halter too
He turned absolutely lovely! Besides, my favourite horse colour. Will you make him traditional Portuguese tack (maybe also a highly elegant outfit for his rider)? Like this one: http://www.sierranevadalusitanos.com/images/sierranevadalusitanos17916017028.png
What a beautiful horse! I've got my daughter's AG horse for my SD doll which hasn't arrived yet. May be too big but I want to see how they look together. Love horses so want to include them with my BJDs. You are very talented!
@Roterwolkenvogel Thank you @Kitty Blue Give it a try, it's not that hard. There is more to the sculpts than one would expect under all that paint they put on, so there's a lot to work with. @petiteballerine Buckskin is a great color, one of my favorites. The original was intended to be chocolate palomino, I think, and that's interesting too, but too dark to photograph well. @Cease Thank you Who cares if it makes sense, it's fun @cthulhu Thank you @Ipledreamer One of mine, too. But there are so many beautiful colors that I can't pick one favorite. I am working on a different one, but thanks for the link. Maybe I will. @Justice Thank you. I am afraid it will be too small for SD dolls. This is an MSD sized doll as a size reference. The horse looks more like a pony for every doll over 40cm. It works better if the doll has a smaller head and doesn't look like a kid, like the fashion doll type MSDs.
It’s absolutely beautiful~ I think it’d be cute with smaller dolls as well though, the way kids look next to large horses, the mane looks beautiful as well and the eyes are so pretty~ As soon as I saw horse I tapped so fast it wasn’t even funny
I have quite a few like 6 I think..lol.. Gonna have to build a stable for them. A few are pretty banged up so I was going to try my hand at repainting them but I'm not so great at it, not much of an artist. I've done a few very simple faceups that came out ok..but I've been sending out most of my dolls or getting company defaults..lol.
I think that horse could look perfect with a Fairyland Chicline doll. But they're a more stylized doll, I guess. Still, JID looks pretty good in that picture
As someone above said, you have a lot of talent. The painting is perfect! he/she's a beautiful horse! And your saddle is awesome. I've been wanting to do my horse up like that. I have a mexican made saddle that's western style, but my girls ride English/Euro style so I want to make an English saddle Maybe you can do a tutorial on that???
@IngieBee Thank you, I guess I have to thank my parents for a lucky genetic mix then . What I did was draw the outline of a saddle-like form on clearfilm wrapped around the horseback to get the dimensions right. Then I looked for a riding gear online store with loads of saddle-pictures from every angle, picked a saddle I liked and recreated it layer by layer. I used to ride as a girl and it helped that I have cleaned a lot of saddles back in the day, so I was familiar with the basic parts. The stirrups are part of some keychains I found on ebay. And I guess there are already tutorials on youtube or elsewhere, there are lots of model horse collectors who make saddles and tacks for their horses.
Update on the horse... I finally found the time to finish the tack. For some reason I don't quite understand the image only shows in the post-preview, not in the post. Ahh, well. Here's a link to the blogpost. https://resinrapture.blogspot.de/2018/05/raziel-has-bridle.html
@Ipledreamer Thank you . I even had to make the buckles, so they're not as smooth looking as I would have liked them. But I see the image posting works again. More horse in action: Queenie and Raziel by ResinRapture, on Flickr
The size for this doll is also perfect. After all, Lusitanos at least used to be a bit shorter than German Warmbloods, so your doll's feet hanging a tad under his belly are just right. Could you please take a pic showing off his saddle as well? That would be great. Are you perhaps into modelhorses, too (I mean the Breyer size)?
@Ipledreamer The saddle is in the opening post- or at least it should be. If it doesn't show, may I point you in the direction of the blogposts? I have a couple of model horses, but I kept them from when I was little, I never really got into it.
Ah, I see. I am so sorry that I overlooked it. It looks a lot like one of these modern Portuguese dressage saddles - a mix between English and Portuguese saddle. I like the looks of it a lot.
I can't believe how beautiful and realistic your repaint made this horse look. I used to collect the Breyer model horses back when i was a little kid...they were my favorite thing in the world from around ages 8 to 10 or so. So I particularly love this project!
@lgijbels @mikki Thank you @chrstphrl Thanks! I first wanted to give the horse to my FID girl, but her legs are just too long. @thedarkeststar13 Thank you . It was a lot of work, but fun. It's a bit sad that there are no horses as detailed in the sculpting as Breyers, the Battat horses look kind of square cut in front view. @Ipledreamer The saddle is meant to be a dressage or versatility saddle, but I had to make it in a way that fitted the horse as well as the doll's posability. Which led to a slightly weird saddle, but if they are not into riding I hope people will kindly overlook it. And the girth is too far back due to the horses built.
I hope it's okay to resurrect this thread! This has entirely inspired me to make one of these horses into a pony for my upcoming doll. You've lit a creative flame for me, thank you for sharing your gorgeous work!
Gorgeous work on both the horse and the tack! I'm glad I've found your thread on here, to be honest, as I have the same brand of horse that I wish to repaint. Did you prime the stripped body or just go straight on with the acrylic base coat? And, did you seal the finished work with any type of sealant or matte/satin varnish?
Sorry for the late reply, this is a such an old post that I didn't keep an eye on it. I pretty much explained what I did in the blog post linked in the first post. I removed the old paint and applied the acrylic spray base after. I did seal the pastel dapples with mr superclear sealant. Without the pastels it wouldn't have been necessary. I hope this was helpful.
This is amazing! I love how realistic the painting made it look. I know it´s an old post, but I was wondering where you got the stirrups from or how you made them if you did? I couldn´t find any information on it in your blog post I want to make a saddle for my msd sized horse but I don´t know where to find stirrups big enough for msd dolls.
@Kakaotee I honestly can't remember where I got them, they where part of a keychain. I think I discovered them at my local pet supply store, but I am not sure.
