i got my "ready for pick-up" notice from Volks Torrance for Ryu also. I'll probably be picking him up on Saturday as well.

Did you change out his default eyes? They look so green!

 

No there the default eyes, there kind of green grey color.

Waa~! Congrats, Nani! He looks like you surprised him with the camera. What a cutie. Does he have teeth in there, or does he just have parted lips?

Yeah, I couldn't tell what color his eyes were from his promo pix either-- but I thought they were more grey. ^^ In Nani's photo, they look like the same pretty ash-green as Tsukasa Konoe's defaults. They're great with his faceup.

I think Una will be getting my Ryu's eyes. And my Ryu shall have, umm... ooh! Maybe the amber green Souldoll eyes here ^^.

Assuming the UPS guy actually knocks. Sometimes, he does not. Yes, we'll just use our psychic powers to know when you're at the door.

Why didn't I have my Ryu shipped to my office? I must be on crack...

 

Awww... big hugs to all who are still waiting! Much to my surprise, my Ryu arrived yesterday. The only shipping notice I got was a phone message that morning from FedEx telling me a package was coming that needed to be signed for. I had no idea what it was until I saw the Volks shipping label... and immediately went giddy, LOL! Ryu has such a sweet smile!

Obviously, you're not on crack that's quite good ENOUGH. My Ryu's here!! Mah crack dealer's betta 'n' yours.

But I have another 4 hours of work left, so right now Ryu & I are sitting here in my cubicle, both wanting to get out of this goddam box.

Sweet! Then it sounds like they sculpted him some teeth, but then painted them pink along with the rest of the lips. Just like Heath, and just like Shiro, and... say, why can't Volks do white teeth, anyway?

They paint the teeth of one-offs & display page dolls, and I know it only takes 10 minutes maximum even if you're clumsy like me. But the rest of their LEs always seem to come with pink teeth. Gah. If this is the case, then my Ryu will have white teeth before I even finish picking out his name. ^^

O hai, that reminds me- what is the best way to paint in teefs? Is it acceptable to just dab them on over top of the gloss with a toothpick? Or would that make me a bad dollieh mama?

A quick dab with toothpick-and-acrylic is all I did to Sada's formerly-pink teeth. Works fine.

 

congratz all who've gotten their Ryu's already. hopefully you will spam the board with many photos ^_^

just curious, saintsavin...which is your preferred method to get the eyes out? softening-the-glue method? or freeze-the-head method?

 

Freezing the head! O_o I've tried several methods, but never heard of freezing. How curious. Does it work?

My own personal method: Use a small jeweller's screwdriver, which has been heated in a flame. It doesn't have to be red-hot or glowing; just hot enough to melt the glue. Then plow the tip through the glue-pile-- starting at the bottom & pushing upwards-- to weaken its grip on the eye & break it up. You barely need to push very hard, because it'll go through the glue like butter! Reheat the screwdriver as needed. Once you get the glue loosened, you can go in with tweezers, & pluck it out in chunks. (Or if it's very stubborn, then keep using the hot screwdriver to scrape out the residue.)

I have sworn by the Hot Screwdriver Method for years... I got sick of the way the old Hairdryer Method melts eyelash-glue, because I hate replacing eyelashes. This is very quick and almost painless.

(ETA: I'm sorry to interrupt! OK, so, Savvy, which method will your Ryu use?)

 

JN you're method is way safer than using a solvent ^_^

i've only heard tell of the "freeze-the-head" method, but have never witnessed it in person...putting the head in the freezer for an hour apparently shrinks the eye glue a few millimeters enough so that you can pluck the entire blob in one go. i've not tried it because i don't know how freezing will affect the MSC or the face up.

 

I use a very small paintbrush and then carefully paint in the teeth. I wait until it dries then paint both the teeth and lips with Tamiya gloss.

 

I used the 'freeze the head' method for my Kurt - I put it in a Rubbermaid container and placed it in the freezer for about 10 minutes. The glue had hardened enough that it was very easy to get out with a tad of prodding with a metal tool I use.

I've once tried the hot screwdriver method. But I was so clumsy that I left some black carbon marks (from heated screwdriver) at the inside of the head. Please be careful if you choose to remove hotglue with this method.

 

Oh right, I neglected to mention the carbon smears-- keep a big wodge of tissues nearby, to avoid that! Wipe off the screwdriver & reheat it frequently, and it'll stay clean. But, all told, a little carbon never hurt anybody; it can be scritched out later with sandpaper or eye-bevel, if you're particular about a nice clean skull. Or if you change the eye-putty frequently (my dolls are all eyeball-whores so their sockets are rubbed clean ^^).

@Wickedgood, 10 minutes of freezing, is that all it takes? Wild. It does sound like a much neater method than scraping-by-force or heating. Have you ever noticed anything wonky happening to the sealant after that?

My Ryu came with an obscene amount of glue, and he'd come slightly cockeyed, so I went right for the old hot screwdrivers. And painted his teeth white as soon as the sun came up enough to see the end of the 100/0 brush. Et voila! : Much more personality now. What a cupcake.





I haven't even decided on his name yet... he's down to choosing between two. ^^

What a great little face! In person, he reminds me of many of his Volks cousins all mixed together: Shiro and Reisner and Renee, among others. I especially love his sooty eyeshadow & dramatic lashes. And even though they seemed to paint the corners of his mouth down, he always looks like he's smiling!

Never got the Sato-Gaeri before, and am so impressed. I ordered him with Self-Standing Service, just for fun... and wow! He poses like an action-figure, right out of the box. Incredible.

Thanks Riddley, the eyes and the teeth seemed to add a finishing layer to him. :} Although he'd gotten such painstaking attention at the Sato salon, his eyes were glued in slightly wonky, and so very stoned. It had to go. XD He's a great piece of work, though.

Say, has anybody started a Ryu Waiting-Room or Discussion thread? I have nothing much left to add to the actual Dolpa discussion here. ^^ Great party, Volks. Thanks for the cuties!

SwD Yui arrived today.. and her faceup was rubbed/scratched.

I'm working on getting her fixed, but yeah. Of the three dolls I ordered from Volks, two have come with something wrong with the faceups.

I got my YoSD Ryo today! I'd ordered him with his seams sanded, so he took some extra time to get here, but I'm so glad I did it--I literally can't find a seam on him anywhere. And the Sato-gaeri SD Doctor included a nice, signed note, and put a Kips disc in his neck joint even though I hadn't asked for it!

Now if only the stray hairs on his wig would stay down.

 

aww if i had known it would've taken the same amount of time to get him order with service I would've got his seam lines removed. I think they do an awesome job of removing seams.

my boy is scheduled to arrive tomorrow... yea it takes a while when living the farthest distance from Cali.

 

oh I think my doll got painted teeth! I will have box opening pics later after I get more photographs. but here are a couple now.

 

Anyone still waiting on theirs? I have mine going to We Love Dolls, but I don't think they've arrived yet...kinda worrying.

I just got a shipping notice for my spare set of hands. Sadly I just left for 2 weeks for holiday family time. Does anyone know if you need to sign for the hands. My next door neighbor might be able to take the package for me if they leave it at the door but I need to figure out what they do.

Any advice? They're being shipped UPS.

I never seem to have to sign for any of my UPS packages, but I heard it's kind of at the drivers discretion. Have you had to sign for any packages before? I suppose you can always call UPS and ask them what you should do as well. Hope this helps!
