after being severely disheartened by the lack of nice mature 1/12 boy dolls i decided to take matter in to my own hands! this is my first try at a doll of this scale but i have a lot of experience of actually sculpting things out of sculpy this small just not dolls ) i decided to draw inspiration form this image i did a while ago through i have no intention of making the bird parts out of resin as i would want it to be more versatile then that! the body took me about a day to sculpt and the head is form another project i was working on but i think i will re-do it with 4mm eyes not the 6mm as it doesn't allow for the scale i want the hip joint is currently only a sculpted line... i want to make a few adjustments to the body still before i start sculpting any of the joints feedback and critique is welcome
Hey you kept him very close to the reference for your idea. (maybe its just me but the face seems a lot like a chibi Chrom) You might want to put both arms facing forward to avoid any ill adjustments when you add joints? I don't really know. I really really like him so far, can't wait to see more. Love those curvy legs
Sleep of Reason thanks the arms do face the same way but i laid them out not to so the fingers don't get crushed u.u suclpy is pretty flexible/soft u.u
I love your drawing ^^ and the beginning of your doll Beware, the torso/neck are not well centered with the lower body (I took my ruler to verify lol)
Earill thank you uwu and your right! it is a little off! sculpy is so soft it shifts around a lot, i'll have to triple check that it lines up before i bake it
love all of this!!! I want more! i absolutely love the detail with the hands so far! I cannot wait to see what you do with him!
If the softness of the polyclay bothers you, remember that you can bake it in layers, and sculpey adheres to itself.
Stosphia thanks for the tip! i herd people doing this before but this will be my first time doing so my self
well it's been a while but i have not forgotten about this project! it had to take a back burner as i addressed other more pressing matters after posting the first few wips i actually ended up redoing the head entirely as it was much too big for what i wanted, in the end i had to give up conventional bjd sizing and went for 4 mm eyes instead, it is about 1/3 smaller then the one in the original pictures (maybe i will post comparison pics with what's left of it later) here is the head on a stick, considering how tiny it is i had no other way not too smush any progress i made xD the neck here is more to keep the head from shifting around to much then anything else, it is actually entirely in the wrong position compeered to the final placement of the neck body wips: i hope i don't ruin that nice togetherness look he has by adding joints TT^TT cutting dolls is always the saddest/scariest part because no matter how careful you are you loose some of the sculpting :'( bonus pic to better show the size: he is just a bot over 5.5" comments. feedback and critique is always welcome~
Came back to the forum after long break, you have really inspired me Loving him so far Will you be baking him before or after jointing?
Ooooh he's so cute and gorgeous! I really love your style, always I love his face too. Love his proportions :3
JetPackJumper aww thank you! i am glad i could ;u;! usually i do some jointing before i bake more or less depending, this guy i did less because of how tiny he is! but before i baked him (as i already have) i also made the hip joint and made string channels as it would be much more difficult to do them later (drills would get involved and i am not very familiar with them so i rather not learn how to use one on something so tiny and fragile) , if he were bigger i may have done more jointing but he was just too small to do that without destroying most of the bodies flow crowtree thanks ;o;!
He is absolutely marvelous! ♥ I love the body shape and you sculpted the lower legs so beautifully. Also really liking the face. ♥ If you ever offer him for sale, I will be very tempted...
tekkonkinkreet thanks ^^ hey everyone! this project has not in fact been abandoned... i simply forgot to update here oops but there is a ton of updates! i baked and strung him up but quickly came to the conclusion that symmetry was not his strong point ;-; i reattached the legs so i could easier make them the same shape, as when they were separate pieces i had constant trouble with them rotating so i would end up fixing stuff in the wrong place i lost a lot of the features while getting them symmetrical but have no fear! i am/will be rebuilding them also there was the issue of the 4 mm eyes, all places that i found selling them all looked sketchy and with a pretty bad colour selection so i decided to give making my own a shot! this was my first time making silicone (putty) moulds and casting in resin, while there were issues i am pretty happy with the overall results ^^ so crooked ;-;! but REAL EYES yaaay shit's tiny yo! that's next to a doll with a 3" head QAQ|||| that's all i have so far! i hope i will remember to keep you posted better in the future :dead
since this thread got transferred here let's update! i made some major progress on orchid over the last few years (it's been so long how embarrassing x__x ) in chronological order i started pulling him apart for joints here he is next to an azone 1/12 sized doll originally i intended for him to have double joints so here is a few photos of that here is his head next to a penny over time i find that the double joints weren't working out and i thought about all the trouble it would be to have such a tiny doll with so many parts so i decided to just make him single jointed;;; all through he is single jointed i found that he posed quite well regardless and has a surprisingly good range of motion continued in the next post ...
after some head scratching about his odd size i decided to provide a resin wig for him so those who can't get a fiber one don't have to have a bald doll! here i made a mock one out of poster tack (also featuring 4 mm eyes!) here is the rough shape of the wig (i will end up changing it as i am not happy with this one...) here he is in some 1/12 azone doll clothes i am really happy to say he actually fits in them! (the shoes as well) i want to fix some details on the hands touch up any large chips and scratches around the jointing and then i will be ready to prime him, i am super exited to have gotten this far with him if you want more detailed and accurate progress you can try my bjd blog ^^ Evening Dreams i hope you are all looking foreword to more photos of my progress
Alewife thanks! since he doesn't have any double joints i wanted to at least have the ones he does have work well...
Oh my goodness I remember this teeny bean!! He's soooo adorable I love him so much!! So glad he's still around. (and that YOU'RE still around I remember some of your old projects from when I joined DoA a lifetime ago )
Miss_Pygmalion aww thank you i am touched that you still remember those! but i did post a lot in that sub forum
This is awesome! Really impressed by the result & your perseverance. I’d love to see a final version!
daftpatience thank you! my goal was to make him so detailed it would be difficult to tell he was as small as he is i don't know if i succeeded but i tried lol
this is very impressive! Working on such a small scale is very difficult, but he looks full of personality already
Wow, it looks amazing. Honestly I've wanted to try sculpting something of my own, but sadly they were all left unfinished. I will most likely never have the time and dedication to be able to make a completed piece, but what you have now looks awesome ;3
amnesiaweeb thanks ! to be fair i haven't finished anything to casting yet either ^^;;; lee_bee69 thank you
Wow, he's amazing!! I've been looking all over for a doll like this so I'm really interested in how he progresses. You're super talented!
palabracadabra thanks! a lot of my motivation for making him is because there wasn't anything like it out there ^^
some updates! but first my sister sent me some VERY nice furniture from Japan *o* (its to show off how he poses i swear!) i drew inspiration from the original image i used for this idea for his hair and i think with much better results! i am just happy it stays on without any sticky tack ! i also discovered a major flaw with one of his legs and had to fix that, it’s scary to have such big mistakes this far along! one of his legs kept on rotating inwards when standing straight when sorting that out i realized his legs were also different lengths and just _(:3」∠)_ i managed to fix that for the most part in one go i realized his hair isn't quite long enough in the back and would look weird so i need to extend that but after that i think i am FINALLY ready to prime him, i am so exited!
I can't wait to see him all primed and ready!! It's good that you found out he had a flaw now rather than after you had gotten him all ready to go, less struggle that way
lee_bee69 thanks and true! it could have been much worse .... mincy thanks you! i probably spent entirely to long getting him to pose right xD;;;;
lee_bee69 thanks for still being interested in him, he is quite far along, i am just ironing out the last 2-3 details before i prime him to be ready for casting unfortunately it's nothing exiting and just endless sanding so there is nothing to take picture of! i will defiantly have pictures of him primed regardless of how much more work i will find my self needing to do afterwords, i am hoping for minimal but you never know with these things ^^;;;
a small update! orchid is ready to be primed with any luck i won’t discover a billion things to fix once he is primed and take another 4 months to fix
No worries, take your time-- thats the glory of the message board blogs. whenever the thread gets bumped after a while, all the oldies come back, and a whole new round of people get to see it! Good luck with priming, he's really come along! Did you have any interest in making different heads/faces? Or just orchid as himself?
Yay!! I'm always happy to see Orchid updates, fingers crossed his priming goes smoothly! (Mild pun intended)
thank you for your encouraging comments everyone Xila thanks! i do want to make more dolls in this scale (if my hands will let me, it cramps up your fingers to work in this scale!) but orchid himself will probably not have additional faces or hands as they are very difficult to make ^^;;; sculpting is fine it's the sanding that gets you....
Oh my goodness, I adore this project!! Yes, I would like to throw All my money at you for this tiny guy... He's gorgeous! Looks just perfect for carrying around in your pocket~ And the progress from the first posts is just amazing! I love the resin wig too. Geez, I am just so in love...
