NO! Don't Do That!

Jul 26, 2010

    1. I often drop doll heads. Without any care. Most of the clothes I make are made so that you have to take the head off to wear them, so alot of times there's a head sitting in a very precarious position at the edge of a table. More often than not the head ends up jumping off (oh and my Iplehouse KID Joy's headcap LOVES to jump off the head and roll somewhere..)..

I think if more people into the hobby knew that I broke off an enormous elf-ear by dropping my doll, then glueing it on with PAPERGLUE until I got some proper glue *AND* after all this never changed my way of handling the heads, I'd be hated on so many levels.. .... ....whoops.
But hey! When I went to re-break the ear to glue it on with superglue, the damn paperglue almost didn't let go of it ยค_ยค I was laughing my butt off the rest of the night, wondering if my paperglue was made in russia or something...

And what is this "clothes staining" I hear so much about? Black toes from having shoes on without socks in my household is common place these days. Its an easy quick sanding (or magic sponge scrubbing) fix, so why worry. One of my old dolls got insane red stains to her head from a red wig, but alas, life is like that. Right now my tiny has a bit of red staining from her protective blanky on the back of her ears, but I haven't stopped using that blanky. As I said, sand away~!

    4. I'm a bad girl. XD My boy's been wearing black and red clothes since he got here. His next set of pants is all black ad I have no intention of going out and buying more fabric since black is all I got in abundance.

    5. i don't use wig caps, and i often leave my dolls in black or dark clothes for long periods of time. there is also one doll that i left in the sun for a long time (not intentionally) and she got 'yellowing tanlines' - but weirdly i kind of like them! i guess this connects to the fact that i am rarely bothered by stains or small defects. for example, 2 of my vinyl dolls have stains on them that i could easily remove if i wanted to, but i haven't because they don't bother me and i even like them in that strange way... they remind me of bruises.

i think imperfection is good at underlining beauty, if something is too perfect it becomes less interesting.

    7. I can't stand it when people rub my girl's face or when they grab her and start moving and turning her sideways, upside down and any other way they feel like and looking up her skirt, it makes me want to smack them :x

on the other hand, I'm not all that concerned about having my girl in sunlight (direct or in direct) as long as it isn't long enough for her to get too hot for me to pick up
also not concerned about leaving her in a black wig (which may or may not stain, hasn't happened yet) all day, everyday for months at a time and with no wig cap

    8. I touch my dolls' faces more often than I should. I also redo their faceups a lot, just for the heck of it. If I don't watch myself, I tend to touch them while the sealant is still drying, and then I have to decide if I want to leave them with thumbprints in their faceups or if I want to wipe it all down and do it again. And I buy those cheap fur wigs that everyone hates. I haven't found a decent wig that I like for either of them yet, and I haven't had time to sit down and try making my own, but I hate when they're bald. Oh well.

    9. I also let my small cousins touch my doll and play with her (ever so gently) because I feel like for the money I paid for her gentle play time shouldn't break her resin. It drives my mom and my Aunt crazy because they are allowed to know how much I paid for her.

    10. Here it goes...

I often pick up my doll by the neck,
I carry him around outside without a proper reason,
I leave him clothed most of the time (though it usually isn't anything dark),
I also leave his wig on (which is dark brown) consistantly,
I often touch his face - I even kiss him on the nose or forehead sometimes,
I sometimes leave him standing unattended on the edge of a table, knowing that he is unsturdy,
I expose him to sunlight atleast once or twice a month, for 20 - 30 minute periods.
I also tend to put him in carrier and tote bags with a lot of padding, but lacking proper protection.

I can't handle hearing about people using acetone or (permanent) marker on their dolls. It is the only thing that really bugs me, along with hearing about people carrying them by their legs (upside down).

    11. I lift him up by his head a lot....I also don't really worry about staining after eating something like chips and touch him...Not flavored ones though. I'm not a messy eater so I don't get dirty when I eat...I leave him in dark clothes all the time hell he's wearing red UNDERPANTS right now and black pants and a dark long sleeved shirt...Oopsies.

    12. I don't care about staining faceups at all. I care a little more on the body, but I've let a dark wig stain a Shallowsleep faceup, and it's okay, because it'll always be under a wig! I dunno if this bothers other people, but I also PLAY with my dolls, like, while having a conversation with them, or showing them to others, I will constantly repose the doll to seem like it's moving, and hold onto their arms and move them while they 'talk'.

    13. Hrm...
Well, I've sat my dolls up in trees
I used to keep them sitting high up on a book case, but I have cats, and I just assumed the cats would leave them alone (I learned that this was a bad idea when my IslandDoll Amy ended up with a black mark above her eye)
I take them to and from college frequently
I leave them alone with my cats
I always have clothes on my girls, and I've left my tan skin Limwha Sujan in jeans for...a while. (Speaking of which, maybe I should get those off her and see the damage I may have caused)
I attempted to do faceup on my DreamHigh Studio Snow and may have slightly damaged her resin with the stuff I used to get the previous faceup off
I've put that same doll on my hat and walked around Philly Comic Con last year with her attached only by the black strap of my steampunk goggles
I've gotten blood on the elastic in my Two.S.doll Mayi when I got cut on her S hook
I tried to change my IMPL Aimee's feet back to cat paws, and now she's been sitting unstrung for months because I can't figure out how to get her legs back on
They sat in my room across from a sunny window before I knew about yellowing
They NEVER travel with face masks because I lost all of them! I just try to keep their faces decently safe
Once, when my one girls eyelashes fell off, I glued them back on with jewelry glue

The list goes on and on. I love my dolls, but I've paid enough for them that I'd rather get them a little dirty and put them in a little danger so that I can at least enjoy their company. To me, they're not to be oggled at on a shelf! They're meant to go with me places, to pose out on a nice sunny day. Maybe they'll get yellow, stained, scraped up, and maybe they'll lose a finger now and then, but it's all part of what comes along with owning BJDs and getting the full experience of taking them out and about with you.

    14. A friend of mine nearly fainted when I took my doll out into the sun.... He has a white skin Dollzone while mine is a normal skin AoD. He's used to the white ones and worry about yellowing. Mine has been in the sun so much and never yellowed.
I also touch his face a lot but that's only because his bangs are annoying and get in his face.
Also, I carry him around in my backpack with my laptop, charger, and mouse.

    15. I throw my dolls all over the place, carry them from place to place, use them as models, leave them on my bed, let my cat near them, leave clothes on for months. In other words I actually play with my expensive toys and I doubt I will do any different with my resins once I get them together. I don't buy dolls just to leave them in the box and even my most expensive shelf dolls get "Mom" time once in a while because I will take a few with me right onto my desk working and all. I'm careful with them considering. I've only had a couple of accidents happen that have really hurt a doll in all the time I have owned mine, but they're TOYS, and I bought them to play with and that's just how it is around here.

Things that annoy me with other people and their dolls. Not much actually. I'm very non-judgmental when it comes to toys. A bad face up will make me cringe but that's an automatic thing and not a personal judgement. I'm not the best face up artist in the world. I know I've got no business snickering at someone else for a less than perfect job. I'm not crazy about too much elitism when it comes to dolls. I make a point of not thinking less of people who collect something I don't, even when I really don't like what they collect.

A doll collector is a doll collector to me no matter what they collect. I don't have to like their "thing" to respect them. I don't much like cliques, people who exile people for collecting less expensive dolls in the genre they like to collect in. As far as I am concerned a play line Barbie has just as much value as a $150 collector's Barbie. If it's what moves someone? It's fine by me. I'm always happy to see someone with a doll they love. I may hate that doll, think it's the tackiest thing I've ever seen, but if they take joy in it? Then I will take joy in their joy and smile.

Doll collecting is something that brings me a lot of pleasure. Being able to talk with people about my dolls who get why I am so crazy about them is great. All the drama that comes with collecting, collecting anything, I tend to stay far, far away from all of that. It's just not something I wish to be investing myself in. I don't like negativity when it comes to dolls. Dolls make me so happy. I just don't want to spoil that.

    16. oh i let my charlotte have lots of sunlight! occasionally it's direct sunlight, but usually it's just natural light. (she doesn't yellow or get discolored, so why not?) I keep her in her clothes all the time too...but i make all of her clothes out of socks/ regular fabric and haven't ever had a problem with it. Same with my new boy, he wears his clothes all the time too :O he does get less sunlight than my charlotte.

    18. Okay here goes

      1. i touch her face, a-lot.
      2. Her legs are yellowed a bit because i let her sit on my desk where only her legs didnt fit in the shadow part of my desk (she is WS btw)
      3. Whenever she sits in the living room (she is usually in my bedroom), i dont hold back in smoking a few just because she is in the room...(the smell doesnt bother me so why not?)
      4. I use a rubber band to hold her wig in place (some people told me it was bad...but ive seen others here using it too so im not sure if its a bad or good thing?)

As for pullips i have much much more...but they are offtopic xD

As for other people handling their dolls....i think it is nice when people dare to not be so carefull with their dolls. I mean when i see people handling them with such care without ever doing anything remotely bad, sure they probably love them a lot but to me it feels like you are handling someone else's possesion or anything. To me it feels like its really 'yours' when you are so familliar and comfortable with them to do anything you feel like doing with them, even if it includes them getting hurt. If they get hurt, deal with it and carry on ;)

    20. Apparently it would bug people that's I'd shave my future (probably DC or DZ) doll's molded penis off, lol. Or the part where I'd be shelling a girl character with a boy body... eh. She's trans*, so it makes sense to me.
Leah sits around in her dark jeans and dark socks all the time... she's already pretty stained. I don't care. If I ever need to do a shoot where she's naked or in a swimsuit or something, I'll just clean it off at that point.
I also use blue BlueTak for my dolls' eyes (and to keep Leah's headcap on :doh it likes to come off when I'm putting on her wig).

What really bugs me is people who mod and seal WITHOUT protection... :| And, not necessarily a doll thing, but a DOA thing, when people resurrect super old threads just to compliment a doll or something. It's one thing to resurrect a thread because it's a problem you're having and you need help, or something, but otherwise...

    21. A few people asked me why I use regular human make-up on my dolls, and I tell them to give them a more realistic look, and I just use whatever works, and is lying around the house at the time. Also my dad thinks I'm insane for spending that much on a doll anyways.

    23. What?! Who does that! AGH! Just the thought makes me shiver :(

      Time to reveal my sins!
I lift my dolls from their limbs and head
I touch their face and hands and let my friends and acquaintances to do so without much hesitation (Yeah, it wears out the blushing and coating and might stain the doll, but heck: I'm the one making them to my dolls and there's no stain that can't be removed!)
I mod my dolls "fiercely" (= with knives and dremel etc. Some find modding a horrible thing to do in general)
I drop my doll's parts when blushing (also when I'm just dressing them, but not as often)

Can't thing any other so far right now.
I got to say that the sin that horrifies me, is keeping the doll somewhere where they get sunlight D:
But hay', we all have our own ways of keeping our little precious dollies :)

    24. With Wiishu, I'm totally cavalier. He goes everywhere with me, helps out in the garden, gets dirty, eats greasy food, balances in precarious places, falls down, is always dressed and rarely protected when he travels...he sits between us in the car. He gets sun, he gets wet...and after a year of this kind of behavior, with the exception of a couple of flaws in his cheek blush, which I'll fix on of these days, he's in beautiful condition. He poses. A lot. So his resin is rubbed pretty smooth in his legs, but he's still solid as a rock.

Pook, I'm more careful with simply because he has a tendency to throw hands and his defaults are impossible to replace. But if I'm actively messing with him to watch the hands, he does everything. Has perched in some really strange places!

The CLines, Morgaine and Vanye, are just less convenient to take with, besides, they keep each other entertained, but they're sitting out in the living room, fully clothed, getting the occasional rays.

What's the problem with fur wigs? (Saw this mentioned as a fault somewhere.) I LOVE THEM! I find them far more charming than many of the so-called "realistic" wigs.

The one thing I can think of that I don't do is pick him up by the head or a hand or a foot. I particularly don't carry him that way. It just feels wrong. I don't have a problem if other people do it to their dolls, but I do ask those who handle Wiishu to be a little bit more careful, at least if I'm around to see it. I think that's because his body language speaks so loudly to me that if I see it, it's like he's squealing in my head! :D

(I've done WAY too many photostories!)

As far as things that bug me, what bugs me are people who judge those who do things to their own dolls that they choose not to. Not sure that makes sense, but it's one thing to be bothered on a gut level by (fill in blank), it's another to judge the person who chooses to do it. The one is a personal choice. The other is assuming you have the right to impose that choice on someone else. And I'd extrapolate that to people who don't respect the wishes of a doll's owner and handle the doll accordingly. That's simple courtesy.

    25. Let see...I've answered this thread before but lets see what else I can add to the list. ;)
      - Touch faces. Aaaalways. Nothing a little magic eraser can't clean up if necessary.
      - Carry them by legs/arms/heads.
      - Carry them outside on their own (no covered protection, carrying cases...one is in the works, though)
      - Exposed them to direct sunlight
      - My girls are always out and on my desk. Definitely not cabinet babies. :)
      - I've fully submerged my girls in water more than a few times. Just made sure to dry out their elastic before restringing. ^^
      - I never take off wigs/clothes -- never had problems with staining though.

      As for pet peeves...

      - *BAD* fur wigs. To emphasize, I like fur wigs! Some of my dolls wear them: the line can be drawn though when it's visibly low-quality fur. There's a distinct difference and it makes me cringe to see cheap fur wigs.
      - People thinking there's a 'right' way to enjoy dolls, and that way is their way (I've heard accusations of "___ is a bad dolly owner!". Wanted to slap a bitch.)
      - Folks not researching before embarking on doll adventures of any sort.

Think that's about it...interesting to see what people are saying, though. : ) It seems to me a lot of the formerly assumed 'taboos'...are alarmingly common. ^_^

    26. I leave my WS doll in her clothes all the time. They are grey to dark. I've always got her (and now my Minifee) hanging around so I don't see the point in dressing them every time I "play" with them.

    34. Hmmm...

-I like posing my dolls in precarious positions outdoors(I'm a climber by nature, you get really cool shots and I've never dropped a doll or had them fall from where I set them)
-I touch the face ups ALL THE TIME, either to play with their hair or boop their noses if I feel like it. But I avoid touching other people's doll's faceups, and I don't like it when other people touch my doll's faceups. (I do the faceups myself, so I know I can redo them, and I know when my hands are clean enough to be touching them, I don't know where other people's hands have been)
-I also touch and play with their hands and feet all the time
-They never go nude(maybe topless if they have abs, but not pantless) even if they're wearing black(I recently learned the pants my Shoshon is wearing is leaving black residue all over his legs, but it wipes right off so I'm not too worried about it)
-I rarely use wigcaps(only if it helps the wig stay on)
-I restring everyone with my hands and feet(including 70+ cm)
-I leave a can of open coffee grounds next to a doll in my room sometimes so they smell like coffee when I bring them to work
-I bring dolls to work(When I did Tech Support there was not a day that I did not have a doll at my desk, it was the only thing keeping me from strangling people over the phone. Everyone knew not to touch them under threat of dismemberment, though I very very rarely left them alone at my desk)
-They sometimes ride in the car without a carry case(though usually they get wrapped in a blanket or jacket and buckled in, otherwise I have some dolls that are too big for my carry cases, and too many dolls for the carry cases I have)
-I usually cuddle a doll when relaxing and reading a book, I have fallen asleep with a doll on my lap before, though I sleep like a rock so the only thing I've woken up to is a wig that's a little mussed up on one side
-Some of my dolls have real metal weaponry(eg. a pewter flail, a bronze cutlass, stainless steel revolver(keychain)) that they pose with
-My poor Dragondoll 72cm has been going around as a eunuch because his magnetic whatsit doesn't fit in his pants(I buried all the parts at the very bottom of my doll-props-I-don't-normally-use bag, even if he does get put in pants his whatsit would fit in he shall remain a eunuch)
-When I get a new doll, they usually get carted around everywhere for at least a week(I've brought a doll with me to the Movie Theatre before, but I didn't order any popcorn or chocolate because of it, and they either hid in my jacket or were on my lap and away from the icky Theatre seats the entire time)
-I've carried a doll around Ren Fest before (I took him apart and cleaned all of his pieces and washed his outfit and wig of all the dust as soon as I got home, though)
-I've had a doll out to take pictures while it was snowing(the pictures turned out beautifully and he was no worse the wear for it, even if his wig and clothing was a little damp afterwards)
-All of my dolls are usually posed around my room, I have three tables and a bookshelf they reside on, and it's only when I'm traveling that they'll spend a night in a case instead of out where I can see them

I can't really think of anything else at the moment... But I'm sure there's tons more stuff I do that would drive most people nuts.

Some things I WONT do with my dolls, though:

-Unnecessary exposure to sunlight, my room is a void that light rarely ever reaches(I'll bring them out for photoshoots, but otherwise they stay where the sun can do no damage)
-Pick them up by just an arm or a leg(I like to know they're stable when I have them in my hands)
-Let people I'm not familiar with hold or touch them(I have some dolls that have not been touched by any human hands other than my own)
-Let them anywhere near food or other items that could get them messy by accident
-Leave them standing unattended when I know they are not stable(even to quick run and grab my camera, Murphy's Law dictates as soon as I turn my back they go down)
-Spend more than a 24 hour period without at least one doll nearby, or being able to check up on all my dolls to make sure they are okay
-Take a doll on an airplane(or bus or train, etc) as anything other than Carry-On luggage(a dream(nightmare) inspired this decision, even though I have no plans to fly anywhere with a doll anytime soon... Probably would have been the same without the dream anyways)

    35. can't remember if I posted here or not but!

I let strangers handle my dolls pretty freely and bring them to conventions to let people see them and hold a doll in person if they've never gotten the chance.

I've brought my dolls to class both in high school and in college.
I never use a carrying case. I don't own one. I tote them around in a backpack or a duffel bag if I'm bringing too many to hold comfortably.

    36. I leave my dolls out on my desk at all times, not bothering to keep them out of sunlight.
I leave them standing up all the time as well, even though they are not too steady on their feet. I just think they look better standing and it's worth the risk.
I never prewash their clothes and they wear them for weeks or even months at a time. So far, no staining.
My dolls are strung really, really loosely. I find them cuddlier this way. I'm pretty sure most owners would be horrified by how loose they are.
I restring my dolls with ordinary green-coated garden wire bent into a hook at the end. It's really sharp and could easily stain/scratch the resin, and I'm not very careful with it xD

    37. -I grab my dolls by a single arm sometimes, and I can feel the space between the arm and torso for some of my dolls but hey, it's not damaging if nothing's rubbing each other. ; D

-I never clean the insides of their heads even if it's dirty from a faceup. Many of them have pastel dust in their eyewells, but as long as the eyes are fine... (I use silicon eyes for some and well, there's a bit of staining on the whites but it's not visible once in the doll anyway)

-I don't wash their clothes unless...it's really dirty from say, lying somewhere damp/grassy. Mostly I don't think it matters (or I'm just lazy), which is really different from when I first got my doll and washed all his clothes after he's been out of the house. o.O And some jeans has stained one of their knees but magic sponge took care of most of that.

-I don't clean my dolls except for obvious stains. Which rarely happens, so mostly I don't clean them. My first doll of 5 years now is a bit dusty inside his joints but other than that...

-My dolls are dressed all the time (even if the head isn't on), even if it's black.

-I usually carry them in different bags than the carrier case even though I have one. I used to put cushions from their box in with the bag but it makes it too poofy and I just put them in with a faceup protector but that's it. And everything doll related I need (boxes of wigs, other heads etc) are then piled on the sitting doll. If it's my roomier bag, I can fit 2 SD dolls, an umbrella, my 1 liter bottle, a bunch of other stuff, and the camera (Nikon D7000) sits on the knees of the 2 dolls. A lot of weight hmmmm.

-I restring them by holding pieces between my knees when I need to PULL the elastic out for the hand/feet hook at the end. And even though I usually wash my hands before touching them (except at meets...cos it's hard to find a sink), I don't extend that same courtesy to my knees (that'll be weird).

    43. Dropping my dolls, letting my cats anywhere near my dolls, ordering all of my dolls blank...

You'd think that last one wouldn't be a problem, but a lot of people seem to think that ordering a limited edition doll warrants ordering the company face-up with it.

      Um, no. :|

    44. I lay my feeple 65 face down when I brush her wig, she only has one wig, its a tight fit and the hair seems very thick so takes so effort to brush. She is so heavy I find it hard to brush hair any other way, and brushing the wig when its off her head is almost impossible. I am also often drop hands and feet for my minifees and have a bad habit of touching my pukifee's nose

    45. I don't properly store my extra resin parts - face plates, hands, feet, fantasy parts - they all tend to just sit around after I swap them out. I need to make storing them safely a priority!

    47. I think I posted here already but for the fun of it:
All the carrying around unprotected, touching face ups, leaving on clothes/wigs, etc. well, that is my dollies day to day.
And once, my "roommate" who didn't even understand that someone wants to collect dolls frowned at me because I was putting shoes on my elf. Not a problem per se, but when he is hanging head down and I'm grabbing him from one leg it looked a bit.....forceful?
      It was hilariouse.

    48. I pretty much never take off any of my dolls' wigs or clothes, even when I pack them away for moving. (and even then, I end up usually just buckling them up in the backseat of the car anyway). I also use bluetack to stick their eyes in, which I've heard from various places is bad, but I don't want to wait ages for extra-expensive stuff that does the same job or worse (Soom's free eye-tack is just awful, by the way. It sticks to everything but dolls).

    49. I think a lot of people would be horrified to see how I pack my dolls to take them to meets.

I make sure their faces are protected, usually with towels, but their limbs end up twisting and going everywhere. No one's ever broken from it, so I don't see the problem!

And really, I think most of us have picked up a doll by the head/neck/leg/etc at least once, even if we don't want to admit it. I certainly have. They're not THAT delicate; as long as you're not throwing them around they'll be fine.

Oh yea! An interesting one that's come up in discussion with my friends before is whether or not it's okay to keep the old name of a doll you got secondhand. (I suppose naming your doll after the sculpt name would fall in this category as well.) I bought my little DF girl from one of my friends, and I loved her name (Sparrow) so I got permission to keep it. She's not the same character or anything, so I don't see the problem, but some people think that by keeping the name someone else gave a doll you're "stealing" the character or something. *shrug*

    52. I bought a doll planning to get her modded, and bought a modded doll. And occasionally point out dolls to my mother that I think would look pretty with modded eyes.

Whenever I comment on future mods, she replies with "Don't do that! It will look horrible!"

    54. I'm not at all delicate when I handle them if I'm fitting them for a pattern. I'll flip 'em upside down, put them face down on a table, etc. Bad, bad, I know. Terribly undignified.
I'm neurotic about touching curly wigs, though. Absolutely flip my shit if anyone or anything touches the curls, including if the hubby places a doll so the wig is rubbed up on or crushed against a wall, box, whatever. I can't stand it. It leads to me giving a doll a boil perm and setting it with glue to prevent mussing and flyaway-frizzies. :/

I'm actually touching mine with my bare hands without gloves and often with hand cream just put on..and I have long nails...so...mmmh...I should buy gloves before scratching her face up or body blushing xD

    58. Some of these things seem so old fashioned to me! Like only handling your doll with gloves or undressing them when not in use ...
I don't do either of those things, and the worst that I do is stick my dolls (securely) in my purse for transportation. They're fine in there, I promise !! The bag is huge and lined with soft cloth, and there's nothing sharp or pokey or stain-y or break-y in there.

    59. When I first got into BJDs I didn't do a whole lot of reading up on them so instead of getting a wig cap, I just slapped an extremely sticky velcro strip on top of my first doll's head and sewed the opposite side on the inside of the wig. Though, that was a cheaper plastic doll so it's not THAT bad.
