NO! Don't Do That!

Jul 26, 2010

    1. Are there things you do to your doll(s) that others would flip over? Granted it is your expensive piece of resin that you can chose to do anything with, but are there people who freak when you do it? (as in voice their opinion in a rude/stern way)
So tell me what you do to your dolls that others frown upon and maybe what you frown upon that other doll owners do.

People frown upon that I pick my dolls up by their hands! It drives them crazy though I do not see the problem with it. I have never dropped them by doing so.
What I frown upon is when people buy fur wigs that are awful quality!

      P.S
have fun with this not bitter!

    3. for some reason its easeir to move my Kun (with her ginormous head cousing some balance problems) by honding her by her neck/upper chest. my friend flipped about that. then there are the girls at one of the shops here that are hard core volks, so when i talk about my Luts or about getting a soom they freak out..... and i mod noses a lot... a girl at my school almost looked like she could have screamed when she heard i re-did his nose (and she didnt even collect O.o)

    4. i let small children play with my dolls. even allowed one little girl to carry my boy over to show it to her mom at the renfaire. and since he was taller than her. she more like just dragged him through the dirt and gravel path. i laughed and my freinds screamed. XD it was so cute though. she tried so hard to pick him up too.

    5. Let's seeing...having faceplates modded, wanting a hybrid doll, wanting to give a doll with a rare face-up a new one...
I think that might make some people upset, but I believe they would be done in good taste and be beautiful. They would also feel like MY DOLLS, which is something that I find very appealing.

i tend to touch my bjd's faces a lot, almost all the time. i figure i did it i can redo it later if i mess it up.

    9. I too let children handle my dolls - I'm very picky about whom I give them to and what dolls I give to the children, but I have no problems letting for example my two year old handle them - mind you, I naturally supervise the whole process and she already knows what to do and what not to do with the doll (she's a very smart two year old). But my dolly friends totally flipped when they once saw this happen XD

    10. Yep.
Went to a renfair sortof event, and had brought one of my MSD's. I also had a huge camera with me, so I decided to make a system so I could hang my doll from my belt with a hook, totally not harming her.
And people said I mistreated my doll.
I'd rather have her hang from my belt than fall out of my arms because I'm trying to balance both her and a camera that cost five times as much as her.

    13. I pick up my dolls by their entire heads sometimes. But I do their face-ups, so I don't have to worry about chipping it because I'll just redo it. *shrug*

I also use a clear coat that ISN'T MSC or Testors. It's amazing, I've been using it for over year on my entire dolls, and nothing has happened. Not even yellowing or any build up of dirt. It's perfect. But I (and my other friends who use it) get yelled at by others because it isn't "MSC" so we're "Horrible Owners". >.>

Personally things that bug me really aren't what other people do to their dolls so much as it is marketplace habits of some... so nothing really to post in the what bugs me section.

    16. When I was hunting/pining for my Soom Cuprit I found someone was selling a head with their own faceup and had modded her ears into human ears. I was outraged.

Looking back on it now, it's silly of course. But at the time I thought that person robbed the world of a completely viable Cuprit! I took it super personally. Of course by now I own my own Cuprit with her precious pointy ears in tact, but that's besides the point

    19. I pick up my dolls by their arms/hands...or their necks...or their heads...or their legs/feet. >.< I know it would horrify a lot of people, but hey, it's really easy if I'm carrying more than one to just grab all of them by the hands and tote them across the room/upstairs. Sometimes it's easier to grab them by the head, too.
I also generally carry them around without faceup protectors except for one or two. (Those are the two whose faceups I'm most paranoid about, as one is an LE 10 and the other is one I've already had to have redone due to a mishap with an anotherspace monocle.)
Oh, yeah, there's also that I sometimes use a sealant that isn't MSC or Testors. I get a huge can of it for the price of those two, and it works just fine and hasn't given me trouble. I think it would actually be more the fact that I use more than one kind of sealant and occasionally mix sealants (if I run out of one and can get a different one before I can get another can of the one I was already using) that would be more horrifying to some people.

The one thing that really bugs me with other people is sanding off a boy doll's bits if the only reason is "OMG penis! EWWW!" It just seems really silly to me. Not my dolls, not my business, though.

    21. Let's see, I might have a bit of a list...

-Picked up dolls by the neck.
-Stood a slightly wobbly doll next to a swimming pool.
-Photographed the same doll outside in rainy weather.
-Let nose-dive prone doll sit on table/desk/shelf edges, and fall. Took pictures and laughed afterwards.
-Rubbed hands all over doll's face to prove face-ups won't smudge off with simple touching.
-Ate varieties of messy food around dolls.
-Left dolls standing alone and unattended while grabbing camera, ipod, etc.
-Shoved three dolls in one carrier with no pillows or face-up covers.
-Put naked dolls in younger brother's room as an April Fool's prank.
-Carried doll around tourist-crowded Washington DC.
-Let WS doll sit in lap on roadtrip to and from Florida, yellowing ensued.
-Placed doll on high-up ledge for photoshoots.
      -Took doll to playground.

There's probably more but that's all I can remember right now. :P

    24. I don't know if this counts but I let my male friends pick up and hold my girl and they play with her as if she were a barbie and they were the rude little boys down the street, pulling off her hair, holding her by her legs and letting her flop around, undressing her. My female friends absolutely come unglued and they don't even own dolls lol. I only get strict with them when they start putting their grimy fingers on her face up. D8<

    27. Hm... I pick up by the arms often as I see it's much more simpler, I don't carry them that way but just up briefly enough to put in cradled arm or on top of another.

I stuff them in tote bags, messenger bags together without face masks, little padding.

I've dropped my tiny I don't know how many times.

Leave them in clothing all the time, ones I know will stain, but keep on top of the stains.

Carry them outside on bright sunny days just because with no real purpose.

Sat them on railings over a ten foot drop for photos.

Set them on rocks surrounded by water for photos.

Use sealant that isn't testors (but so much better than it) or MSC (haven't used it but too lazy to go through the hassel of buying it online).

All I can think of so far..

    28. I touch my dolls faces a lot as well, but I work in a place where I have to wash my hands like 50 times per shift, and that habit has rubbed off on me outside of work.

And I let my cats lean up against my dolls. They don't do anything but rub on them, so I don't see a problem, but some people do....

    29. I allso use sealant other than Testors or MSC (it's really good. and cheap). I touch his face all the time, eat food around him, let my 8-years old cousin touch him and carry him around, and who nows what else. It just seems too much paranoid to care about every little detail.
And besides, let's face it; these dolls can stand even little more rought handling. There are not many things you can't fix if something really hapens.

    32. I used to pick up my teenie gem by the top of her legs... except her legs bend into sitting position easily, and so she flopped over and thonked her head on various surfaces a few times. I've never had any damage though; not even to her faceup. I pick her up by her torso now just to be safe though ehehh

Also, I usually bring one of my dolls to work with me, and just put them in my (big) purse, (facing up to not crush eyelashes) without any pillows or covers. Never had any problems there either though :)

I don't use Testors or MSC.
I have a doll modded from peices of like six different companies.
I pick up my dolls by whatever body part is closest.
I let really anyone who wants to see my dolls touch them (faceup included).
I sit my dolls in full sunlight frequently.

I pick them up by the neck because it's the sturdiest area to grab them by.

I left my dolls standing unaided for a whole day and was rewarded for the trouble when one of them fell and cracked his knee *cries*.

    36. ... I've had my Soom MD Heliot on top of the entertainment center where our then kitten couldn't resist climbing on, which resulted in his ear being chipped off... and rather than fixing the problem, I just turned it into (yet another) scar mod. He has multiple scar mods, a cracked nose (from faceplanting), will have multiple ear piercings, and other piercings, as well as tattoo mods, and when I finally get his body, yet more scar and tattoo and piercing mods.

      I think I have a modding problem.

I also want to get CW Sphaler Mireu legs, hack them off somewhere below the knee joint, hack off my DZ Hongs shins below the knee joint, and fuse them together with epoxy. To make my Hong a demon.

    37. It's been about a month since I played with Emma. Not proud of it, though. Just had tons and tons of college work to get done.

Ideally, I also want to keep any sort of work I have to do on my dolls at an absolute minimum; thinking about eventually getting Emma's face up to be permanent because I don't see myself doing it myself or paying money for it again. And I don't see myself ever heavily modding things, like sanding down noses, ears...possibly opening eyes (but we'll see about that). Maybe seam lines, but Emma's are absolutely no biggie.

I don't see myself ever changing a face-up, either. I usually buy a doll for its default because I don't see myself doing anything with the face, otherwise.

I know that last part is something a lot of owners would flip over, because the way it tends to go in the BJD world is that you like a doll for its face shape, and not its wig, or face, or whatever. But I do because I don't see myself doing anything to them.

Yup, pick /em up by the head, carry them in bags eithout face protectors, use saliva to clean smudges off of them: I have no qualms when it comes to treating them like everyday objects :P It's only caused a sligth problem on one of my dolls so far (she fell off of a table and got a mark on her face) and she remains my favourite. I put her in her carrying case without a face protector, she now has smushed eyelashes but i don't care i can easily repair those. I let other people handle her, only good friends though. Ik leave her standing on her own, then i leave, totally forget about her and come back an hour or so later, as of yet she hasn't made a face plant. I let our cats go near her, i've made really cute picture's of my girl and my kitten. Ik take her out in the sunlight cause i think it looks pretty when i take pictures of her in the sunlight.

    48. I touch Lestat's face all the time. And his hair. And I take him out in the sunlight. He stays in his clothes 99.9% of the time (I did line the inside of his pants though, and he wears stockings on his feet so...so far the little amount of staining hasn't gotten worse) Um, I think thats it. I let someone else touch his face to? At A-Kon, they wanted to see his face better so they had to move his hair, which ment touching his face. They asked and I was just like, yeah sure, I do it all the time.

Oh he also sits out in my room a lot (not direct sunlight but still) and is around my cats and dog all the time.

When I get the girl I'm now planning for I might be a little more picky with her, since she'll be my first brand new doll. But we'll see. One thing I like about BJDs is the ability to do stuff with them. ^^;;; I'm very hands on.

I grab a piece of cloth and use it as a makeshift kimono thing with a scrap cloth ribbon, too lazy to put on proper clothes on my dolls.

I've been doing lots of NONONO stuff with my Too, I grab him using whatever body part is closest to me, he stays on my bed exposed to indirect sunlight and to my curious cat, he sits in the living room w/o my supervision when I'm outside of my room, I touch his face constantly, rubbed off part of his eyebrows when I cleaned him and still haven't redone it, and I kept him even though I found out that he was heavily modded without me knowing. Also I actually love how yellow/ivory he is. :D

    56. Well, all of my dolls came with company face-ups( it was a promotion, they were free), but after about a month or so of owning them I decided to remove their face-ups and do new ones myself( to the shock of some of my doll-owning friends.)

Their new face-ups don't include eyelashes ( I don't care for them, it just makes you more worried about squishing them.)

I also touch their faces sometimes ( only because I know I can easily whip out the paints and fix it again if I need to.)

I did once get a bit of glue on one of my doll's eyes. I was a total accident, and I managed to clean it but it still makes that one eye look a tad glossy.*shrug* I may eventually get her a new pair of eyes, not like that pair she had was expensive anyway, just $6 acrylic ones.

I was making little footprints on the floor to amuse the kids I was babysitting during St.Patties. the bottom of his litt tosies are still green in places and nothing I have done has gotten rid of it. But I dont mind so much because he is my favorite doll and the least likely to ever be sold
I also re-do my Shiwoos faceup constantly, which has resulted in discoloration of her cheeks (its not staining their just ....more yellow perhaps)
I love touching my dolls faces and petting their hair when I walk by.
Also I will leave them standing on my counter for days on end, in the kitchen, with the curious and annoying cats.

    58. I'm kinda rough with him when I make him clothes >__>''' I TRY not to let him snap back and bash his head against things, but it just kind... happens. -His stringing was fine till he got his head, now it's toooo tight-
I also pick him up by his arm a lot, and carry him that way. Though if I'm moving him to a completely different area, I'll hold him properly -If it's just across the room, I just grab his arm-
And I touch his face a lot, but he doesn't have a face-up yet, so it's okay....

    59. I leave my dolls in their clothes for a VERY long time (months at a time) without removing them. I understand staining can occur, but I cannot afford to be constantly buying new clothes to change them, and they're not going to be sitting on my book case naked. :/ That's for sure. I like my dolls being displayed, not hiding in a box. So I suppose it's my only solution. I don't really mind if they become stained either, for their mine to enjoy and mine alone. I don't really ever plan on selling, for they mean too much to me.

    60. I have a protective foam sheet to wrap around my dolls when I pack them up into their carrying bags, so I don't feel obligated to put on a face cover because I'm certain of its sufficiency. But I've definitely been scolded for that..
