NO! Don't Do That!

    2. My dollmore boy has SUPER sturdy legs, so sometimes I pick him up by one leg. (He's my little monkey, hehe) My friends who are into the hobby freak out when I do that, but I guess they underestimate my boy's legs, haha.

Also, I don't know why people get really upset if others aren't using MSC to seal their dolls. I know one day I might want to try MSC for myself, but I've found a product that is supposedly better than MSC and I can find it locally! I say hey, if it works for you then use it! *still using up my last can of testor's, haha*

    3. Let's see... what are the things I do that make people cringe?

      - My dolls sit out on my dresser, though I do try to keep the direct sunlight off of them when I'm not looking.
      - I pick them up by the neck/head/arms/legs... where ever I can get a grip on them basically.
      - I carry them outside in my arms ("OMG Yellowing!!!" =_= don't care about that...)
      - I wipe expensive default face ups and do my own (only done that once because my doll came with one and I didn't like it)
      - I leave them in dark clothing
      - I touch their faces!! (I did their face ups, I can do them again!!)
      - When I go to doll meets, I put them all in one bag, though they're all in their original pillows but I fold the dolls so I can get them all in there.
      - I leave dark wigs on without a wig cap/protector thingy.
      - I restring 60-70cm dolls on my own by using my hands and feet!

I think that's all, or at least all I can think of right off the bat. I must be a horrible doll owner. Not really. I love my dolls and I know they can handle some rough housing. Mind you only one of my dolls has scratch on her, but that's because my kitten decided to nibble on her tail. Another doll (one I received as a surprise gift) I dropped onto a table when trying to get his damn head back on and he now got a dark smudge on his bum (he's a discontinued DZ sheep).

      XD

    4. I keep my dolls in clothes all the time (i know some people who flip over that because my two boys constantly wear black)

I also pick up my dolls by their necks (with leg support and when they are sat down sometimes arms. It's not like I chuck them around and mistreat them though :L

Another thing is I use a different sealant to MSC, it doesn't yellow and it is perfect! But apparently that's "bad" because "MSC should only be used" -__-

Umm I sit them on my desk when I work there, they are usually out of sunlight but my desk isn't. Also when I take them outside, some people flip because of "OMG YELLOWING!"..I couldnt really care aha!

No wig caps either for my dolls who wear dark wigs.

    7. I am a realist with my dolls. I know accidents and yellowing happens, so I roll with the punches. I take my BBB Apollo out with me just about everywhere with no carry case, no face protectors. he wears blue jeans, black shirts, etc. I hug him and kiss his cheeks all teh time and when I have to go what ever body part my hand lands on first is what gets grabbed. I use a sealant that many people have said yellows their dolls and is bad, but I have never EVER had an issue with it. I used good ol' #2 pencil to draw my boys eye brows on. He is almost never naked unless i am sewing him something and even then I usually have panties on him (you read that correctly). I've used water/acetone solution to remove the color from his lips (and I washed him right after). I blushed his man bits in full detail including hair (until I wiped it last week). there is more, but this is what I've thought of for now. I know a lot of other owners would die if they watched my day to day interactions with my dolls, but I figure eventually my doll will be a yellow, stained, battle-scarred, child tested, resin reminder of an amazing story that is my life (and the awesome stories the dolls are in)

    12. I let kids touch my dolls faces. XD

I remember one day my mom's friend came over with her daughter and her niece, both around the age of 8 or 9. The girls start to play with my dolls and as soon as they ask me how much it was they just gently put them down and sat on their hands. IT WAS THE CUTEST THING EVER XD.

    13. I pick my dolls up like wine glasses, around the neck. I use my feet to help restring my sd boy. My oldest doll (who's almost six years old) has had blu tack in her head since I've gotten her. Each doll has a shiny spot on their chin from where I position their heads. And yet, dolls that aren't mine I nab behind the ears to tilt and position. Blu tack is keeping my Luwen's headcap attached. My dolls weren't even stored safely in their boxes when I moved.

    14. I was recently told I don't play with my dolls enough...??? Lol. True because I am full time work and school. But they sit in a large cabinet with glass doors so they don't get dusty. I can't call that abusing my dolls but others find it wrong.

    18. I think I pretty much do everything everyone else here does. I don't really care about leaving clothing on mine since I know I can clean them if it stains. They sit out and get a little dusty sometimes, but that's nothing I can't deal with either. I forget that they sit in the sunlight most of the time. xD
I think it would probably bother people that I'm not very pro at taking care of wigs. I do what I can (ie brush them often, store them neatly) but I don't take them off when I'm transporting my dolls and I don't really put any product in them or wash them. One of them is really frayed at the bottom and my curly wig is full of flyaways, but my others are all presentable.
And I accidentally knock my Heliot's horn off all the time. xD Other people would probably be driven mad by the way I handle him, but I'm careful enough that he's not damaged in any way.
I of course contort my dolls to fit them into bags. - w - My Tinyfairy has somehow always fit in my purse. I can fit my two SDs into my handbag. It's all good, nobody ever gets damaged.
I've also taken my Tinyfairy up north with me and put her next to the water, had her lay in the grass, stuff like that. I know I can just wipe her off if she gets some dirt on her. Taking my dolls outdoors is something I enjoy, especially for photo ops. <3
And I do touch their faces sometimes, haha. xD

      Hm, things that bother me....
I would say that if someone picked up a doll by its wig I'd have a heart attack. x'D
Something I've also recently discovered is that I'm really thrown off by dolls with faceups that don't include any eyelashes or eyebrows. xD It feels so wrong! I can learn to appreciate it if it's part of the character, though.
And the only other thing that bothers me is over-personification of dolls, particularly the use of the term "rescued" for the purchase of a secondhand doll with mods or damage. Don't get me wrong, I'll talk about my dolls as if they're people sometimes because it's hard not to when they have characters associated with them. >.< But if people start treating dolls like they can be abused or neglected, I get worried.

    19. I decided that it was about time to restyle my doll's hair today. Her hair is synthetic, and it's wavy, so I decided to do what I did the last time - I wet her wig under cool water, and sprayed some Got2Be hair spray on it and let the fan dry it off for a few hours. Came out great. I did this based on a tip I got from someone on here, and it works well...

...but that's not the OH NO part.

Before and after I did the hairspray, I decided to comb out her wig with a wide-tooth comb. I pull - not excessively hard, but still harder than what I figure people do. Her wig gets tangled often, and easily, and I just do not have the patience to gingerly comb or brush it. Otherwise, I'd be there all day. I also don't mind if a few wig hairs come out in the process. I don't expect hair to stay in the wig indefinitely.

    21. I do loads of crap that people would probably freak out over.

I leave my girl fully clothed with footwear on CONSTANTLY she wears light colours though, Used to wear black and has actually stained but I've not tried to wash it off properly yet, I'm betting it'll come out though.

If I'm preforming maintenance on her wig, I leave her wig-less for the entire process.

Touch her face, and yes, her face is fine.

Have her sat on my lap when I watch anime whilst drinking tea.

I hold her headcap on using selotape (sticky tape) at the moment due to it being very loose and not having a headcap (I got one coming)

If I want a certain pose, I will force her into it and construct some sort of support system around her and cover it up for the photo. I never do it in a way that could damage her though, her resin is VERY heavy and dense (old B&G resin) so it's going to take a lot of effort to even chip anything.

I have her always on display in a room where the window can cast light onto her if the curtains are open, she is a WS doll but was already slightly yellowed when I got her, she has not yellowed at all since I got her. She is almost always exposed to artificial light.

Her faceup is sealed with something that isn't MSC and I don't care (I commissioned it). I used to use MSC, I live in England so now I use something everyone has likley never heard of!

I use rubbing alchohol to clean dolls and take off faceups. It's never caused a problem and in the UK is called Surgical Spirit (is not a solvent which is a bonus)

When I make clothes for my own dolls, I don't wash the fabric first, most fabric I use doesn't transfer dye much if at all though. If I make something for a customer, It's always washed and treated first.

Things I hate people freaking over:

That you don't do to your doll, what they do to theirs......IT'S NOT YOUR DOLL!

    24. I'm always touching my boys, cuddling them, putting them on my lap, giving them kisses, etc. I do try not to touch their faces too often, but sometimes I just have to stroke or kiss a cheek. ; u;

I carry them around in my arms while I'm walking around the house, and I do like to take them outside and carry them when I'm with friends hanging out too. XD I'm okay with having them securely in my arms, I manage to pose them in a way where they are "holding onto me" so to speak. I don't have a doll carrier, so I just bring something to wrap them in before placing them in my shoulder bag carefully if my arm gets tired. :3c

I sit them on my lap while drinking coffee, but I never eat food near them.

    25. I touch my dolls face ups all the time, AND I leave them in their clothes all the time. I pose them in precarious places and while knitting for them, they are often left on the couch all day, sometimes by themselves.

They have all met my cats, although I can't leave them out anymore, my younger kitty has a PASSION for mohair and in an attempt to get my pukipuki's lovely red sleepingelf wig off her she put two little bite marks on her head )*8 and knocked her off her shelf. Her wig would cover the marks just fine if it wasn't now a tanglefro that I had to dig under the oven to retireve after the kitten "killed" it. Ugh.

But I still love my doll, she's just got a bit more...er...personality now, amirite?

    26. Well, right now my dolls live on the back of the living room couch in full reach of what little sun filters into our basement apartment. They've been posed with 'bad' props (open paint, running household appliances, etc.), manhandled, grabbed by the head/arm/leg/clothing, faces constantly touched and bodies generally 'fondled', left indefinitely in dark colored clothes or clothes/wig/eyeless and frequently interacted with by a three-year-old and our two cats.

    28. I touch my two mini girls' faces pretty often to brush hair out of them. :x

My usually-wigless PKF also gets picked up by the tips of her ears (finger on one, thumb on the other. And everyone except for my pukipuki has been unprotected in a purse or backpack at some point or another, though Ama ALWAYS gets a face protector if she's going anywhere.

And once, before I found an anxiety medication that helps me deal with my compulsions, I had a compulsion to dip one of Ama's hands into soup. As soon as it stopped feeling like the world would end if I didn't, I unhooked her hand and ran to wash it off off!

Reading through this thread, I was surprised by how many people lift their dolls by the arms sometimes, or leave them in their clothes. I feel a lot less bad about the times I've done that!

    29. Hm... I can't really think of anything major, other than that my dolls don't currently have a display space of their own since they stay in my closet. I'm thinking of making them some sort of little apartment in there, but they don't have their own shelves or anything. They just kinda chill.

There's not much that bothers me when it comes to what other people do with their dolls. If it's not my doll, what business is it of mine what someone else does with it?

    33. Wow, reading this thread really makes me feel like a bad doll owner. Many of these things I do, without even thinking it's wrong. For example I touch my dollies faces a lot, se no problem in that since I get them new faceups regularly. I also lift my dolls by their necks, thighs and other body-parts big enough to hold their weight. When I transport them I use no faceup protector or any other kind of protection, I just put them in my bag and make sure nothing is close to their face and so far they've never broke or in any way got hurt. Of course I don't do this to other peoples dolls, just my own ones.

The absolute worst thing I've done, a thing that even gave my really unsensitive friend a heart attack, was tossing a doll to a friend. It isn't as bad as it sounds though. We were sitting a bit away from each other and didn't feel like getting up from the floor to pass her the doll. Instead I carefully tossed the doll to her, a distance of one meter perhaps. The other people in the room was chocked, but what they missed was the seconds of careful communication that took place between me and the catcher before the toss, we both made absolutely sure that nothing could go wrong. And of course it didn't, she grabbed the doll by its waist and put it in her lap. To my defense I have to say that I do know this is not a good way to treat dolls, and that I wouldn't do it ever again!

    34. I do a few of these things. I leave my dolls in their clothing for long periods of time (usually a few months!) But the clothing I have I know doesnt stain, so its not a big deal, and well I keep them out on my shelf in my living room so no naked dollies allowed. XD I guess leaving them out all the time is a bad thing, but my appartment doesnt get any direct sunlight. I also grab them by their legs or feet to reach them off of the shelf

I try not to touch their faces, because it isnt dirt that I am worried about, its the natural oils from your hands that wears and stains after a while even if your hands are clean.. so I try not to touch the face, I use a clean soft paint brush to dust them off if they have been sitting for a while.

OH! One thing I forgot that was a personal "oh no" moment.. was I let my friend play with my favorite SD, and she was very rude with him, treated him like she was playing with a cheap barbie.. x.x.. I was horrified by how she treated him. Wont do that again.

    38. Oh this is a wonderful thread! xD

I love putting my dollies in water -- you can get some awesome photos and I've seen people cringe as once I let my girl sink (in a shallow fountain), snapping shots as she slowly drowned. xD Of course, immediately afterwards I took her apart and let her elastic sun-dry, her disassembled bits gently blotted dry with a soft towel.

Other than that, occasionally I've been known to let children handle my dolls (from my experience they've been very polite, realizing it's a *special* doll, not their own, and treat it like a holy relic which is often cute. ^^

I've been known to pick up my dolls by their arms, also, and love taking them out to simple places: grocery shopping, wandering the mall, the looks you get are wonderful and there are some great photo opportunities to be had.

    40. I've got one of my dolls wearing black capris that stain. I do it because I'm not planing for her to wear anything dramatically different. Not too upset her thighs are stained. She also got a squiggly line drawn on her by someone who wanted to annoy me, and as much as it is, I'm keeping it there to prove a point.

Another one has a wig cap on but no wig. Another is nude. The others are nude and headless. Two are in natural and artificial light all the time. One was already bought yellowed, the other I never realized the sun got to her during certain hours so she's embracing the yellow.

    42. My Francis lives on my computer desk. He's exposed to indirect sunlight for the better part of the day, but he's mint in color so a lil yellowing or greening wont really hurt him. He's also wearing black leather, but I do not think it will stain him, he's worn it for several days now and nothing has happened. He spends most of him time standing and has only fallen once, he landed in my computer chair, which is soft, so I'm not worried about him breaking. I've picked him and Effie up by their necks and hands and I occasionally balance Francis on the palm of my hand, he stands like a rock so it doesn't worry me much. I've let my dogs sniff my dolls, but I keep their wet noses away from their faces and they aren't tall enough to access my dolls without my supervision. I also kiss my dolls on the nose. I'm a clean person and don't slobber on them, but they are just too cute not to show affection to every now and then. At the moment I am keeping my Seris, a Lumedoll Rischa, on my craft table next to my dismantled WIP Effie, but he is very close to my pastels and paints and some people might cringe thinking about how dirty he might get, but he's blank and I will be doing his blushing and face up so if he does get dirty I will easily be able to fix it. Effie has been in pieces for several months now, since I ran out of time in the summer to finish her and the weather/my schedule haven't been permitting. Some might hate to see their doll in pieces for that long, but I'd rather have her finished before I restring her than have a partially blushed doll just because I lacked patience.XD
I've had a photo shoot with Effie at the top of a waterfall on a fairly windy day before and I brought Francis to the Renn Faire, where I lost his teeth and let all sorts of people handle him.

    43. OK, so I am a BAD doll owner. I do loads of this stuff without even thinking about it. :( I feel so guilty now.

I leave my dolls in the same clothes ALL the time, and they're usually black clothes too. They go for ages without being cleaned or restrung or even dusted, though I do play with them quite a bit and like rearranging them so they don't get too dusty. Their body blushing is always getting chipped without me touching them up, and when I scrub off their faceups to replace them, I use *gasp* nail varnish remover (which always ends up fine). Once when I was modding one of them I used a chisel and a carving knife (which didn't). I've even used nail varnish on a doll before, over MSC. Don't even get me started on how brutal I am with a dremel. I think the worst thing I do is sanding without using a respirator, though I do this underwater so it's not as bad as it could be - still very bad though! I also touch their faces all the time, and sometimes lick them if I see a stain on their faces. I'll brush their wigs (if I ever do brush them) while they're wearing them, risking scratches. I pick them up and put them in precarious places, and they often fall smack on the floor.

I do love them really, though. Oh, now I feel terrible. :(

    44. I probably don't do enough with my doll. People would probably think I wasted my money because I don't "play" with him but I'm quite happy having him posed on a chair and looking over my room.

    47. After reading all of these I feel like a bad doll owner! I've never even thought of using face-up protectors except if I was shipping my doll somewhere and I leave my dolls out all the time. When I travel I have a little thing I made for my Puki but with my big girl I would just wrap her in a blanket and tuck her in my carry-on. And whenever I show people my dolls I find their reactions to the fact that they come apart hysterical so I regularly will pull off her hands and feet and her face plate and eyes. But I think my dolls don't mind. Hopefully.

    49. Sometimes, at conventions, I wear my smallest doll in my coat pocket in order to have my hands free for the moment.

    50. My older brother is always playing with my girl (even though i absolutely can't touch his doll) and both he and my little brother are ALWAYS touching her face. There was one time my younger brother was eating cheetos and he literally picked her up by the head and cheetoed up her faceup soon before dropping her on the floor from about four feet up. It's surprising, but she's suffered little damage by their hands. But she and my WIP doll definitely don't get any respect around here.

    51. I am just plain amazed by some of the things that I have seen people do with their dolls in my project area. I have to admit, my mother knows how much I spend on my dolls and is appalled by how I treat my "sewing Models" I tell her they are work models, thay are not allowed to have self respect lol...

    52. I sometimes put my girl in...daring places. I'm always watching her very closely though so she doesn't fall!

    53. Even though everyone is entitled to treat their dolls the way they want it irks me to see marker faceups on 1000 usd dolls or just really bad makeups, mostly goth or emo dolls too because most of them look very cheaply customized

    54. I know that a lot of people are really really really picky about touching a dolls' face, but sometimes you can't help it! I do it to my own dolls since my SD is soooo loose and I have to constantly move her head around, but I can't help it. My hands are pretty much always washed and I trust that their faceups are properly sealed since two are factory done and one has successfully stayed on for ~a year. Unless the faceup hasn't been properly sealed, then what is there to worry about?

    55. I think a lot of the things are opinionated...some people touch their dolls faces, others don't. Lately, I regret to admit that I haven't played with mine as often as I once had. I still know they're there and I'd be pretty sad if I got rid of most of them. But since I moved, there really isn't anywhere to take them to take pics. ;_; Hopefully once I get a house and more room I can give them their own area (outside of my bedroom) where I can take more pics, etc. Generally speaking, I don't like when random people touch my dolls' faces either. But I'll let people hold them. I'm not too uptight about that. :)

    56. I always leave messes when I craft things for my doll. I usually clean it up, but not for a few days xD
I have a mess lying on the floor next to me, actually!

    57. I love to pose my boy so he gets moved and touched a lot and usually lifted by his hands and head. My horror day was when my boyfriend was making my boy some foam armor and he touched my doll with his grimy hands (he had been working on a car uugh) When I got home I was all crazy because my boy was covered in grime and nastiness so I took him apart and gave him a good wash with a Mr. Clean Magic eraser and a soft cloth. Thank goodness it all came off! When it gets warm out I want to seal his body with msc and give him a new face. I am afraid to do it in the cold. Yay Montana winter lol.

    58. A couple of weeks ago I went to a "queer club", and since my trans-girlfriend didn't want to come and I didn't want to go alone, I went with Johnny. At least I couldn't get too drunk... and nothing bad happened! Many people came to tell me how pretty or scary "she" is, and I had to show he's a guy. I was glad he had his Calvin Klein boxers on =)

And in Sweden, the 13th of December is Lucia day, so of course one of my girls had to be Lucia too. Kids, don't try this at home!

Alice is the kicking type, it wasn't easy to get her to stand up! But once again, nothing bad happened.

This is what we do (yes, me too, I'm not Swedish but I'm in a choir here and sometimes we do that in Finland too)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk0FyZqNp5Q

    59. I leave my dolls in their clothes all the time. No matter how often I try NOT to touch their faces it's often the only way I can get a wig on straight or move their head (without the wig popping off) so I handle their faces all the time. I pick them up by the neck a lot, it seems convenient. I pick them up by any appendage that seems convenient- arm, leg, whatever... Though I'm more careful with the more expensive ones...
