NO! Don't Do That!

Jul 26, 2010

    1. When I show my dolls to my family, they touch the face and I freak out on the inside. However I tell them politely not to do it because the paint could come off.

    2. I totally freak out when I see snow or water related photo shoots. I know water doesn't damage resin, but I'm always worried about the blushing or the outfit the doll is wearing getting messed up

    3. i'm another one that picks up my dolls by the neck. My big boy, being a RS Feng, has a LOT of neck to grab and it's really sturdy (i only have little hands so it's actually better than picking him up by the torso) but i can imagine that it doesn't look particularly good.

    5. I dump them into whatever bag I deem convenient for me when going to a dollmeet. Sometimes I put my SD in my padded shopping bag. His legs are abit too long for it, so I put him in with his back down and his legs up, jutting out of the bag a little. Apparently everyone else felt sorry for my boy and that he'll probably get me back for it or something :/

I also leave my dolls in the same clothing for months, or even over a year. I haven't bought any of them new clothes for the past 2 and insists on sewing them noobish half-done outfit that no one else in my community would ever put on their super expensive beloved dolls, so.... yeah.

Oh, and I'm also probably the only one locally who would use her doll to bash into someone else's head as a self defense tool.

I find it really disturbing when people sand off boobs and man parts....just sell the body and buy a different one if you don't like it!!!

    7. Something what freaks me out, is modding elf ears to normal ears. I have a huge obsession to pointed ears, so maybe that explains it.

If you don't like the doll that way, let someone else adopt that one, and if it's a limited doll, oh my don't do it! >_<

    9. I hate it when people never brush their dolls' wigs! It's my biggest pet peeve. The only thing that really enrages me though is really terrible hybrids where the head is obviously and massively too large for the body. Just... eek.

As for things I do... I like to mod bodies because they're usually too muscular for me. I get a lot of cries of 'oh no all that beautiful muscle!' I like muscle, but not when it's scary and unnatural, like the SDF muscle is. I also blush pubes on my adult dolls, because I prefer that look on people. Everyone seems to think it's a sexual thing, but come on. Nudity isn't necessarily sexual. -_-

    10. Hm...well, I used to be quite silly with mine when he was still blank. I'd put his head on a dowel rod and wave in front of people going, "Wooooo creepy doll head on a stick! *ufo-ish sound effects*" I love him to bits, really, but I'm sure some people would be appalled. XD;;;

I also touch his face rather frequently. I do my own face ups so it's no big deal if his gets messed up.

As for other people...I think I'm most bothered by hideously bad face ups and sanding off elf ears. Only elf ears. Sanding boobs and man bits doesn't bother me one bit, but the second someone hacks off those lovely pointed tips...argh! I'm really not sure why. I love fantasy, yes, but I have no special attachment to elves. :\

    11. Well... I've had my MSD girl lying on a balcony ledge some 15-16 stories up and it was windy
I've also had my MSD boy balancing on narrow poles, also in windy conditions.
Both these pics are in the gallery

I also touch their faceups, though I make sure my hands are relatively clean - mostly it's to brush off dust or fix a drooping eyelash.

I have sprayed MSC on a doll head in my bathroom. Well it worked a lot better than spraying it outside. I live on the 9th floor and again, its very windy, and I'd get dust sticking to it when I tried to spray it outside like everyone recommends. When I sprayed it in my bathroom it went on a lot more clean and even.

I've also run through a drizzle holding my tiny without his face protector, and dashed through pouring rain holding my MSD girl with only a tiny umbrella that didn't help much. They both came through unscathed.

    13. Since my collection has grown I'm expanding my answers. I take my two tinies lots of places with them just shoved in my purse. They also sit on my shelf. My others tend to stay in my closet now. But I am still very hands on. I don't wash my hands every single time I go to touch them unless I know I've been touching something funky. Still take them outside lots. Love to take them shopping with me so that means lots of outdoor time. And I pick them up kinda carelessly sometimes. Granted it can be hard to juggle that many dolls at once. >.> Lestat and Victoria were also in a shopping cart that got jostled a lot on pavement. I freaked out a little worried something would break but in the end they were fine. ^^;;; Another doll owner might have slapped me for that though.

    14. I usually just shove my dolls into a bag or carrying case without any protection. I've posed Julie on rocks and trees and messy places even though she doesn't have shoes (lucky for her I've finally ordered her a pair). I poke at their faces a lot, don't take care of their wigs and leave their clothes on for long periods of time.

I didn't even know that there was a rule about leaving their clothes on too long. I'm not really planning to get them more than one or two outfits each, I need to save up for more dolls! ...And other things, I guess.

    15. I've never brushed my doll's wigs. Personally, I don't think they need it - and while I do have a wavy/curly wig for my doll, and it does frizz a little, I'm ok with that.

    20. I have actually pierced a few of mine. not glue on piercing, but actual drilling. Also, I touch them, take them outside for photoshoots, sleep with them....all the things many thing are bad. But....I think if I can't love them and enjoy them and play with them, then its not worth the money to stick them in a display case.

    21. Hmm, let's see. A lot of people are mentioning touching face-ups. lol I do that. I also pick up my boys by their necks or hands, and I'll carry my Aphans around by their arms in a rather ragdoll type way. They don't mind, and I feel as if I'm bonding with them - you know, like when you'd carry your old stuffed animals around as a kid . . . lol Except I'm perfectly all grown now. Oh, and my dolls are always in clothes. Dark clothes. If they stain, I'll just magic eraser them. It's not a big deal, I don't want naked dolls around, even though most of my dolls are boys and all of them are rather attractive. . .

And the thing that erks me the most about doll owners are . . . I have a few. Really - wiping a default face-up from a limited doll. Drives me nuts - especially if it's one I really want and can't seem to find. I really take it personally. Over half of the people who give their own face-ups on a doll . . . shouldn't. I practice on a practice head. Another thing is bad fur wigs. Fur wigs don't come pre-styled. You have to do that yourself. Style the wig! I mean, unless you're going for that Brian Froud smashed fairy look. lol And my number one peeve is flippers. No, you didn't not bond with that doll! You got him in yesterday! You're just a nasty flipper! Trying to turn a profit off of other companies work. It's really noticeable if you watch the lati community. The same people buying one of each doll just to put them up in the market place the day after they arrive for 200 to 300 more than they paid for it. It's a little disgusting. . . And people wonder why lati can't keep up with their orders, when one person is ordering eight dolls at a time. . . [/end annoyances]

    22. We bought Lusis on the secondary market, the face was worn, shiney and a mess and she was strung with the large bust option. I restrung her with a hair extention hook, worked a charm...till I realized I reversed her arms!! Somber seriousness about 'teh dollZ' dissolved into hilarity and I do what's fun ever since. I recently wiped and base sealed that FP but before that, I had great fun using powder human cosmetics on it to try out looks, then just letting them wear off or brushing them off. No stains, the head wiped fine.

The only thing other people do so far that annoys me is call all ABJD 'Dollfies'. It bugs me because I still mod 1/6 Volks Dollfies, and a few resin owners don't like 'those little dolls' but call their dolls 'Dollfies'! I should be more amused than annoyed, I suppose!

    24. OMG I think I saw this doll!! They had him in drag! D: He looked awful! And what was worse was the outfit and HORRIFYING face up they had put on him and modded him with some peircings and were charging almost a 800dollars for him! They destroyed him! He looked like Michael Jackson in drag dressed up as Lady Gaga.

Yeah that's the only time I've freaked out so far for anything some one has done to a doll......

Ummm I think I would get scolded for letting my boys sleep in their wigs/clothes some times. >....>; And definitely for bringing them to the mall and with me when my girlfriend and I go out to eat on occasion...

Also... >....>; when people get huffy about buying dolls that aren't volks... personally, I don't find volks sculpts to be appealing to what I'm looking for. So I don't buy them. Everyone has their own tastes: its not about being able to not afford a doll so you are forced to buy a cheaper one, its about going for what you like in a sculpt. o.O; There's not really much business in us saying what we should and shouldn't be buying- when you break it down we're all just adults playing with dolls.

    25. Hm... I carry Danielle everywhere. I'm bring her to the fish store, the park, my friends' houses, and any other place. I'm sure that would drive some people mad- after all, she's in sunlight a lot AND she could be damaged or stolen.
Aside from being stolen, none of that really bugs me. If she yellows or gets a scratch, she'll just be more unique- complete with battle scars!

    26. I bought a Planetdoll Riz (in tan because it was in stock) I really wanted a Riz. I know people pay a lot more for tan sometimes but I didn't want her tan. I took her apart (first time ever doing that) prepped and painted her completely so she is not tan.
I suppose some people might freak out about that. I have been painting resin figures for years so I am not worried about it at all. She came out great. :)

    27. I've had my doll in my BBB doll's bag without a face protector (my conscience did eat at me, but then I told myself that she wouldn't be moving a lot, either, so it'd be OK).

I also had very two poorly thought out ways of transporting her when I did take her out. The first time was in a big, canvas bag - with her pillows, and her can of stuff (which I actually didn't need). Not to mention that it didn't have a closure, and it was snowing and slippery out.

The second time was probably worse - had to be. I actually... forgot that I intended to take my doll with me, and quickly threw some things together because I was still adamant about bringing her. Truthfully, I arranged her first trip last-minute, but at least I remembered the night before.:) This time, all she had was her face protector inside a tied-shut plastic bag.

A huge downpour ended up happening that afternoon, and I was without an umbrella. I also had to go to another building, so I had to go out in it - even a minute or two of walking was unbearable. To top that off, I was in sandals, which had no traction when water got between them and my foot... it was not a good afternoon.

What was actually good about that was she was in a plastic bag, and didn't get wet because if it. I was also lucky I didn't fall, but I think the bag was luckier. There was a downside to the bag transport: the bag was dirty, and she had dirt stains on her neck and ear, but those came off with a magic eraser. I also ended up bringing her wig, but forgetting her head cap... thus she couldn't have hair that day.

    31. Then there's also the issue of taking him with me just about everywhere. Not only around the house (where I get "DON'T EAT/DRINK NEAR HIM! 32. Well lets see...
I touch my boy's LE face-up alot, mostly cus I'm fussing with his hair constantly.
He stays dressed all the time
Sleeps in my bed with me
I take him everywhere, and often dont think to bring a face protector
He wears black boots alot, though he does have socks
I've grabbed him by the arm or leg before
Left him standing unsupervised for 5+ hours
Let the 5 year old I baby sit play with him; she was really gentle though.
I dont wash my hands before touching him unless i got through touching something gross or messy.
He's also face palmed and head-desked quite a bit.

      I think thats it. :sweat

    36. Some people can't stand that i would buy a marketplace head with a perfect faceup (or buy a head that comes with a free company faceup) and just erase it because it's not mine, i have to do all my own faceups or the doll just doesn't feel like it's mine.

My friend has a tendency to pant random words on her dolls for photos, one time at a con a girl gave her a dirty look because of the random words scribbled in paint on it, then blatantly accused her of using "sharpie" on her doll. I thought that was rude and it bothers me when people think they know more about your dolls than you do XD

    37. Oh there is a list on this one for me.

      1. I pick my boy up by what ever part reaches my hand fist. He's tough resin he's ok.
      2. I put him in my purse when I'm out walking around. There is a felt bag inside my purse to keep anything else from touching his skin but this means he can peak out and I'm not carrying him like some oddly sized child.
      3. I touch his face a lot when moving his head. His wig will come off if I touch that and I did the face up I don't mind redoing it often if need be.
      4. I make his clothes from what ever I feel like using. If he stains a little I know how to get it out of him. Besides he's so freaking sealed he's ok. His clothes rarely stay on for more then one day anyway.
      5. I did my first faceup ever on a limited doll with "non traditional" media. Yes I admit I used a different sealant. Made with the same flipping chemicals as MSC for half the price lol. AND OMG I used paints that wern't on the "approved list" guess what... they still don't stain!
      6. I play with him and hand him around.

BUT the point of the story is I love him. I play with and enjoy him so much that I don't have to worry about wanting to sell him or having to make a decision. I love him and he is mine.

    38. The first bad thing I did to my EID Carina when I got her, was an attempt to cast her body and head. I intended to make rough copies to make clothes and wigs. It took some trying around and I ended with only a bust and a scull dummies. The procedure itself would send most of doll lovers into a hospital with a heart attac, or they would simply kill me. ;-)

I always lacked respect for precious things. The same is with e.g. cameras. I simply seem to lack the ability to be over-careful. With nothing. And my laptop looks like a door mat sometimes.

Apart of that I do hold my doll by the neck.

Instead of classical sueding I tried to make the hip-balls raw using (don't trow things at me!) a rasp. It didn't work though.

    39. I've done a few things XD

-Touched my doll's face while brushing away bangs (I have oily skin so I try to avoid it, but it happens xD)
-Carry him in his bag without a face protector
-Forgot and left him standing for a day on my desk (Good thing he stands/sits/poses like a rock, or he would probably have many falls by now!)
-Placed a friend's doll on my horse (he's a mellow horse, but you never know with animals...)
-Let my cat investigate my doll
-Frequently pet/smooth down his fur wig (Probably is well-conditioned now, ha)
-I don't think I've ever NOT left him in clothes...I should probably check him for staining at some point, for he wears black XD

I'd probably carry him by his arm/hands more if his hands didn't pop off. He's a MNF so he has the magnetic kind - probably a bad idea to pick him up that way haha.

    40. I am always shocked when people do it, but I did it yesterday to two dolls of mine myself... the biggest no-go for me: letting one's dolls standing in the middle of the room, on a table, on a shelf etc. unattended, and without a doll stand. 42. I pick my dolls up by their heads/necks fairly often, I touch their faces constantly, I even tossed Aziza once in a fit, (although she was on a cheap Bobobie body at the time and it was carpet she landed on) >.<;; I've wiped LE face-ups before and would happily do it again (I like to paint 'em myself.) I dunno, I'm probably a terrible dolly owner, but I just don't mind if they chip their face-ups or get a little dirty, I can clean them up later...

Not much really annoys me about other people's collecting habits but the two hardest things to see are dolls that have been poorly face-upped/modded and dolls in really bad accessories (wigs/eyes/clothes). I don't criticize the owners when I see it, I just hit the back button as fast as I possibly can because I really don't like it. I hate seeing a poor doll with eyes the wrong size that give it an O.O look, or a bright purple wig that's messy and flyaway with a horrid green amateur face-up etc. (Just examples- any resemblance to real dolls is purely accidental.) It literally hurts my eyes...

    45. I swear I'm a horrible doll owner... XD

      1) I carry my dolls by limbs, necks, heads - whatever I happen to grab. (not so much their hands because I've had horrible issues with doll hands in the past)
      2) I leave my dolls out in my room where they sit in the sun for most of the day.
      3) my limited volks head bounces between an AOD and F-doll body 8D (both bodies costing less than half of his head, and the head is a bit yellower than both XD)
      4) I have one doll who's head cap ALWAYS falls off. I've gotten so used to it, I'm not phased if it hits the ground - even pavement ._. (it's got it's battle scars, but w/e... it's under the wig)
5)I leave my dolls in dark clothing made from unwashed fabrics for days (at times even weeks or months) on end.
6)a few of my dolls have face up chips or rubbing... I dont care. My dolls are for photography and I just photoshop it out. It only is a problem with me when I can't anymore XD then it's time to get the dolly a new face up.

there's probably WAY more than that, but those are my main things that come to mind XD

      things that drive me crazy
      1) dolls with eyes that are not positioned well (wide eyed, eyes looking completely different directions, etc)
      2) out of scale piercings.
      3) unstyled wigs - fur specifically. 90% of the reason fur can look awesome is that it can be sculpted.... SO SCULPT IT XD
      4) people who aren't careful with doll hands ;; it makes me sick to my stomach to watch people tug tight clothing over hands or try to force them to hold something.... I just freak out.

    46. Besides some of the things mentioend above:

Putting a cheap, less popular company head on a really, really expensive body.

    47. O, and carry stuff on my head. African style i mean. I tend to carry stuff on my head to keep my hands free.
Shocked people when i did that with my doll.

    48. Hmm, well as most people here I tend to touch my doll's faces a lot because their wigs are a little big and needs to be brushed aside ALL the time. And so far they've all been bought blank and given faceups by me so if I f-ck up then I can always fix it ;P

I have my darlings sitting/standing on a shelf above my desk all the time, dressed of course and unsupervised most of the time. So far my cats have only made one of them faceplant into my desk once *angelface* Made me sit straight up in bed on the second floor however, let me tell you.

I don't go by brands when I buy my dolls. I either just fall in love with a mold or I find one that fits my purposes and then find some way of funding the purchase. I can't stand people who scowl at people because they have dolls from this and that company. As long as they're loved I say.

I carry my dolls where ever it is convenient, neck, ribgrip, buttgrab and so on ^^

Haven't taken them out anywhere yet but as I don't own any faceprotectors it's gonna be without one once I do in any case

    49. hmm I guess this is a no no but i tend to pick my 59cm+ dolls up by the neck b/c it tends to be easier for me to do so when they sit so close to each other. I have been know to catch my falling dolls by there hands as well. Also tend to throw my 5star tong tong around but she is a real sturdy doll with cat paws so I'm not real afraid of something breaking off. She actually hit the ground today and came out with nothing but a small black mark on her nose that i wiped off with my finger.

    50. I think the biggest is that I don't use wig caps. ^^; I check the heads a lot, tho, and it's only been the fairyland dolls that stained. -shrug- Hmm...ooh, I take my ebony girl out into the sunlight and, other than being careful not to scratch her, I treat her like I would my normal skin ones. One of the ways I adjust a head is with my middle finger on the back of the head and the tip of my thumb on the very tip of the nose.

I think what bugs me the most in other collectors is acting like the doll is going to turn highlighter, scrambled egg, lemon drop yellow the very instant a teeniest bit of sunlight happens to touch it. I have to try so hard to keep a straight face.

    52. I take my dolls outside.... in the SUN. :O

      I tend to frown upon dolls without faceups. I wont be rude or anything. Its just not my thing ^^;

    53. Hmm...let's see. I love to cuddle my boy and kiss him. My daughter is also allowed to do this (she is extremely careful). As I have to do his face-up anyway, it may only offer one more chance for practice.

I kind of "tuned" his body. This means, separating his upper torso stringing from his leg stringing - I installed successfully a loop into his hip part.

I took a dremel and sawed his upper legs apart in order to install mobility joints.

His ears got also a treatment for exchangeable ear add-ons - pointed tips and such.

Ah, and one of the first operations was opening his eyes a tad.

And he never gets locked away in a drawer or closet. I want to see him, so the sunlight touches him often. And I am pretty sure his color has changed already...I like that actually.

    54. I DO: I take my dolls out ALL THE TIME and people are like "no the sun!" "no the strangers!" "no the accidents!" I've been fine, every. single. time. Nothing has happened. I was hit by a car and my doll was still in perfect condition, even if I wasn't. I always handle my doll by her neck, and touch her face (though I still try not to). I also don't use a carrier unless I'm traveling in airplanes.

I DISLIKE: when owners freak out about yellowing. IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN PEOPLE. No matter what.

    55. I keep most of mine behind glass, in display cabinets.

That really seems to get some people's goat, for some reason. It's like "OMG! You mean you don't PLAY WITH THEM CONSTANTLY?!?! You're a terrible owner!"

My usual reply to that nonsense is that the cabinets are the best way to keep my crew from turning into total dust-bunnies. Besides, I'm a collector. Display cabinets are our instinctive reaction to having a collection, no matter what it happens to be.

    56. Many things described here let a chill crawl up my spine.:o
Things I do or did: Left my dolls out accidently and my pets got to know them (they didn't gnaw on them luckily), used pins and needles to fixate fabric on them (no scratches, though ^^), I touch their faces, also I'm very brutal when restringing them
Other than that I let them stay in a glas-doored cupboard out of direct sunlight, don't take them out too much and hold them carefully depending on size.

    57. I had set my Promith up in a trellis vine system for photos one time at a meetup, there were a couple 'I can't believe your actually letting your doll hang in a tree' reactions. I knew he was perfectly safe and stable, I even shook one of the branches on the lower part of the tree to show that he wasn't going anywhere but I think that made their reactions worse... I've been climbing trees since I could walk so it really wasn't a big deal to me because I know how to be stable and stabilize things in them without even thinking about it:sweat
I got some really good shots, too~

    58. My family has flipped about me taking my dolls outside before, specially my mom. It's not like I throw them out in the dirt, which is what you'd guess I do by my mom's reactions lol. I just take them to botanical gardens and stuff for pictures.

Plus some doll friends have reacted with complete horror when I once told them I'd like to mod a Volks SD Miruku (super limited $2,500+ doll) in to a SwD doll. I can't help it, her nose, mouth and chin are just too cute! ;) The perfect features to be able to wonderfully become a SwD. I can understand how it'd horrify them for me to 'ruin' such a rare and beautiful doll, but it sounds dreamy to me. And this is without even having the doll, who knows if I'll ever get her and they still freaked out lol.

    59. I frequently touch my doll with my hands. Never the face, though, just the body. Also, that thing lying by my chair, on the ground? The headless thing? Yeah, that's my 200$ BJD. Generally, he's on a piece of cloth, though, so he seldom really touches the ground.

    60. Hmm, let's see... I touch my boy's face all the time, mainly to remove dust or smudges... I leave him lying out on my bedside table, balanced precariously on a pile of random stuff... Er, and he only has one eye with eyelashes? No one's criticized me yet, but meh! He's my doll.
