New Dollshe Sculpts and Rerelease Discussion

Mar 3, 2008

    1. I don't like the new bodies, but I think that the fact that Dollmore tried to steal sculpts from Dollshe forced them to make a very unique body for their dolls to help prevent further theft. The jointing looks really great, I just don't like how stark and pronounced everything is. As others have said, most of the time they would have clothing on so I don't think it would bother me too much. I just really think that the neck is to long for the size head that they sculpted and the legs are longer then they should be and the knees are in a wonky place. I think they gave more anime/fashion proportions to them making things look off.

    2. Phoenix73182: I don't think it's ever been definitively proven that Dollmore 'stole' Dollshe's sculpt (or else I'm sure they would be banned on this forum), and this is certainly not the place to debate it.

      Moving on.

I have to say I have to agree with the majority here; this body looks alien, insectiod. The abs, ribs, and shoulder blades are much too harsh, and should be softened up. Plus, I finally realized what bothered me about the ribs, aside from the fact that they stick out like the poor alien is malnourished: real ribs shouldn't meet in the middle in a smooth line like that... there's something called the Sternum that should interrupt that line.

The legs are just too long for the body... if you took out that extra knee part, then the leg would look alright. (I'm not saying I don't like the extra joint in the leg, since I have no idea what it does, I'm just saying if you took out that extra height...)
The arms look great, but the hips... are just too narrow, I think they should have been just a bit wider. The new butt also looks great... since the old body never had a butt (and that really bothered me about the old sculpt, although I loved everything else).

I wonder what the joint at the spot where the neck meets the torso could possibly do... Maybe it sinks into the body so you can move the neck around more realistically...?

Loving the fact that they'll be available in six different colours, but I really, really hope that this is just the body for Origin, and not all of the head sculpts. I'm also really missing the Hound head sculpt... he was my favorite. :(

I think... what I'm really missing though... somehow, the old bodies came across as being protective, comforting... This new one... it has the opposite effect.

    3. I like it, I can't wait for the alien head either, we're not taking into consideration the faces being painted I think, that can change a look all too easily. I've seen molds I hate that actually made me like them because of a good face up.

I'm a dollshe girl though, I only have three, but I want two of the alien heads because...well..they're cool XD

    4. I hope they come out with a body that is a bit less detailed than this. :T As it stands right now the sculptor went a bit "joint happy" when making this. And it's come out a bit too weird looking for my tastes.

    5. i'm actually growing more comfortable with the new sculpt now that i've seen it for some time.

and now that i see it in other skin tones, it's boosted my opinion of the new sculpt as well. and now that i think of it, i won't really buy a doll and let it stay naked the whole time. i'd actually want it so thati could play with it, dress it up and make things for it to wear. but i'd also like to see the body with other faceplates, and i do like the prospect of its functionability in terms of posing---oh the possibilities and what not. i applaud dollshe for this---even more when poseability pics show :D

but then again, i just went for soom's heliot...so i'll have to wait for a few. plus, 750UsD is currently too much for me, although it depends on the exchange rate. i just checked recently and it was about 550-ish UsD maybe it'll reach up to 700's with shipping and taxes though.

i hope that the site goes up soon though so that we get to see other face plates on the body and promotional pics and all :)

thank you for the information killualover~

    6. Before Luts adjusted their price last year, most BJD companies in Korea used 1 USD= 1000 Won to set their English site price.
But now Luts uses 1 USD = 1200 Won for their international price. and some other companies remain the same. (1:1000)

They never use the daily exchange rate ............. :(

    7. But it's not just the daily exchange rate. It's been like this for a long time. One US dollar hasn't been a 1000 won in a long time. Or at least I don't think it's been. Even with money changing fees I don't see why it should be 200 dollars more for US customers. I guess the question becomes, are we allowed to pay in won?

    8. I keep coming back to look and I believe the thing that bothers me the most is the crazy stylization of the torso and the lack of anything resembling a muscle in the legs and arms.

    9. Yes, I get your point! I didn't notice this until one day I went to, er.. I think it was dollmore or buddydoll, website and convert the Korean Won from there then I found that Korean BJD companies usually sell their doll more expensive on their English site..

Yes, it's so unfair since we also have to pay higher shipping fee.........

I wonder if we can pay them in Won by wiring payment to their bank account?
However, as far as I know... most of them require a Korea address to be paid in Won.... :...(

    10. My guess is that all skin tones will be regularly available at a modest premium. I'm basing this on the fact that "Mr." Dollshe is currently doing the casting for DollsTown, who now offer their dolls in the pale and medium tan, and to the best of my knowledge they're neither limited nor prohibitively expensive. It sounds too good to be true, but I've seen owner photos of a pale tan Seola and the skin looks just fantastic!

    11. I find this body hideous . I found the old body ugly but compared to this .... the old body is pretty.
Why to buy it if some of you want to kep it all the time clothed ? You can buy cheaper Bobobie and keep it clothed also . Or Dollzone whose new bodies are worse than old ones.
I suppose Mr Dollshe wanted to fix low poseability that was characteristic to old body . But this ? It might be poseable and all , but why to make such ugly body ? Anorectic ribs? Shoulder blades with some hollow part ? Ninja Turtle abs ?
Too much money to pay for such disgusting thing.

    12. The more I look at this, the more I wonder what the man was thinking when he sculpted that torso and those shoulder blades. I can't see those remaining with the body over the long haul, they look so unrealistic and frankly, not good for any doll other than Origin if you assume that is an alien head.

    13. I want to see what one of these looks like in person. It might just be strange in photographs and look a lot better in person.

    14. Well, they did go to court over the issue. If anyone wants to read Dollshe/Mr. Kim's side of the issue you can check it out [post=1322596]here[/post]. The issue was settled and I believe it was not in Dollshe's favor. Clearly, Dollshe's descison to stop selling the old body, to make a new a new completely different doll type and to start his own retail shop to sell them through has something to do with his feelings about the issue. He even said he gave the Origin head an "angry" look to express defiance towards...well, let's just guess. :sweat

So based on that, I really don't think he will make that old body again. Bad blood and all.

    15. oh oh oh I think they are prefectly gloriouse, deep tan Rosen shall be mine ^.^ He is so perfect ... I have wanted a long limbed delicatly sculpted boy like this forever... the body looks increadible I can't wait to feel what it is like to pose, so elegant.
don't care how much they cost he can bleed my bank account dry Mr.Kim has mad style.
I think it is perhaps that his sculpts remind me so much of some of my fav comic artists works ... don't know... but love, love, loooove ^.^

    16. OH, so that's the reason! I thought it might be something like that, but I was never entirely sure... Good to know, good to know.

    17. Oh fab- so if you get one atleast there will be one in the London midst :D Yay!!!

    18. I liked the old bodies better....meh. Where's Hound?

    19. i think the world snake pop into my mind while looking at this new boy, but i'm sort of liking it O.o, but it not a oh must get, so i'm alright :)

    20. First I was like: "Eh? What?", but the more I've looked, the more I've started liking the new Dollshe. My fingers are itching to pose that body. :love I must get one eventually, I just know it. The hands are just about the only disappointment for me (the old hands are simply the most beautiful male doll hands ever made ;_; ). I hope there will be more pictures soon and I'm dying to see owner pictures, too!

    21. I can see that his hands and feet are still to die for .. * just drools *... but I don't know so much about the turtle belly.. but then again the colors... mmmm... gotta love the assortment from milk white to dark chocolate... I rather like that.... perhaps one of these men may find his way to my home in the future...

    22. I wouldnt mind the body, but the head looks so small on it O_o it just looks... wrong... and what is with the abs? It doesnt look at all right to me. And i was really looking forward to the dollshe re-release :(

    23. I JUST realised what this body reminds me of! It looks very much like the diagrams in medical journals of the muscular structure of the human body without any flesh on it! All of the muscles hyper-defined, (although I'm afraid the anatomical correctness in this boy was lost in favor of stylization), and angular. Well...perhaps just the torso as there isn't much in the way of muscle definition in the arms or legs, but-yes! It's been bothering me this whole time in a very 'I know I've seen that before' kind of way.
The body still fascinates me mechanically, though it really doesn't do much for me aethestically. Still...fascinating.

    24. I just had to comment on this. People who don't live in the US still have to pay by USD, making it almost 50% more expensive for Australians at least, going by the current market. So if anyone should be complaining about pricing, it should be us. :...(

    25. I definitely hear the concerns on this body - but for me, it's sheer resin love! I do love the older style Dollshe, too, but it suffers next to, say, the Volks SD17 in terms of proportions, aesthetics and engineering - so, to have this new and completely unique and unusual body unveiled and availabe is very exciting! I hope the perceived articulation is as good as it looks to be! The head size....I dunno....

      But I want superhumanresinangels - I can't wait!

    26. Well, I'm a little sad about the body because of the chest and torso which are too stylized for me. I am very curious about the pose range of the new bodies though. Very curious indeed. But I do agree, the thighs are very long. It makes the rest of the body appear out of proportion. All these things can be fixed with modding, of course, but that's a lot of work to put into one. As much as I'd like a Bernard, I think I'll pass. But I am excited to see owner pictures. :)

    27. Zagzagaeli would love to see what you would do with this guy..... he seems so very different then your usually romantic creatures. i know that somehow, you would come up with an amazing solution.

    28. I never saw the old Dollshe body as being particularly "realistic", rather it had ethereal and idealized proportions. I can see some people being upset about its poseability, which for me has never been a concern - I like my dolls to pose like dolls and I like the old "dollshe slouch". But this new body is also not realistic in its sculpt or proportions and any sort of ethereal quality seems to be gone. That said, I'll probably still get one or two, but it's in no way going to take the place of my old Dollshe, and in terms of aesthetics I'd say Volks, Dollmore and other companies making large "pretty" bodies have got the upper hand till Dollshe fixes that ugly torso sculpt.

If I do buy a normal skin new Dollshe I'll be taking sandpaper to that stomach and back in about the first hour and a half.

    29. I think the new body looks so bad, I can hardly understand that this is going to sell as a finished product? I don't even think it looks "stylized", it simply doesn't make any anatomical sense to me. Very creepy. :|

    30. I think the muscle is probably a bit over-defined...
However, maybe with body blushing, it'd look more natural.
I'm not a big fan of boy dolls, however, I do think some of the comments may be a bit over-the top...
All dolls without any accessories/face-up look like alien androids to a degree anyway....

    31. Looks like Dollstown will be offering sales for Dollshe from their website starting the 18th.

    32. After looking at pics for hours on end, I think the real problem for me is the torso/abs, which were so flat and beautiful on the original body, and was one of the biggest reasons I loved Dollshe bodies in the first place. I would have been ok with defined abs if they looked like on a Soom body, which looks wholly realistic, but this is just too much. That said I've waited too long wanting a Saint to just not get one, so eventually he will be mine, and if he has to be on this body then so be it. There is always sanding the torso, which again is my only real issue here, then the body would be perfect in my opinion.

    33. I'd buy it because of the posability, bobobie are not that great. They look "cheap" to me and their sculpting leave alot to be desired (body, not head/face). Also My dolls wear clothes, I like clothes. So why would they not wear clothes?
I also have Dollzone. There's nothing wrong with 'em. My Hid is one of my better posers and holds it.

I understand everyone has their opinions, so I'm stating mine.

    34. My god, I HATE that body.

Looks like if I ever get a Hound, it'll be with the old body for a crazy high price.

    35. Oooo E. I can *totally* see one of these as your 'dark' angel you've been looking for --
and *more*, omg look at the possibilities in all those skintones!!! :fangirl:

    36. Well I am really interested in seeing one of these new Dollshe on the forum, so whoever gets one post lots of pics, the new body will take me some time to get use to, but I am soooooo glad to have my Hound on the older body, sad the old body is no longer available:(

    37. I am really waiting for some pictures that would *prove* the assumed higher-than-standard poseability... since poseability is not always in proportion to the number of extra parts used in the engineering of a body, as we all know. It sure looks impressive in that regard, though^^

    38. Well, I think Dollshe are gonna be succeeding in this respect. No one is going to want to copy that!

    39. Seconded, unfortunately. It's, um, pretty unique.

    40. Even if you could get your opinions through to Mr.Dollshe it would still just be a matter of taste. If he changed his design for your sake it would not necessarily mean that it would improve it. It would only be an adjustment to match your taste.
(And I just want to add that this is not something against you personally. I am only quoting you to get my thought of the matter through.)

I find it strange that so many of you actually think he should change his design for your sake! This is HIS design! His ART!
There is nothing wrong about not liking it. Of course not! Everyone has the right to express their opinion. But to actually get mad at him because he created something that you do not find pretty enough!?

It is not like he is taking commissions from us byers to create something we approve of. He is designing something that he likes and offer it to those who share his taste.
I understand that some of you may be disappointed. But if you don't like it... don't buy it! You can be pissed about it but I do not think it is right to get angry at an artist because you don't like their art! That is just how I feel.

I truly hope he does not change anything just to please someone else. I would feel this way even if I did not love this design. I would never change my art for someone else unless it were a commission.

    41. I said nothing about him changing his design (except that I was wondering if it would sell poorly and thus be changed as a result to be more like the "old" Dollshes). If he likes this design, fine. He might even be able to sell a bazillion of it to people who like the poseability or the fact that it looks like an action figure.

I am, however, allowed to have an opinion on stuff that I don't particularly care for about the design. I don't intend to write to Mr. Dollshe and tell him so, why should he care, especially since I'll probably buy one or two anyway?

People on this forum need to understand that criticism is an opinion; it doesn't always mean "do it my way." I'm not so self important as to assume that ANY company or artist would change its ways just on my account. If they want extra money out of me, maybe they'll change. If they can get that money elsewhere, or other things are more important to them like their own artistic vision, they won't change.

Additionally, most of the doll artists are not just "artists", they are "businessmen" as well because they not only want to make their vision, they want to sell it. It's not just some little personal artistic integrity thingummybob, it has to do with them wanting our dollars and not wanting us to spend it up the road at the other company who is vying for our business. So to the extent that some may have suggested "he should change this or that", the business angle needs to be taken into account. Doll companies may not be Mattel Toys but presumably they do want and need to achieve a certain level of sales. Their creation doesn't just hang in a museum as a representation of their "vision", it is meant for customers to want, plunk down money and take home. A doll maker who ignores public opinion does so at the risk of losing business. That may be a risk he is willing to take but it needs to be observed.

    42. Agreed. "Mr. Dollshe" is making what he likes. It's more like art that is sold to those who like it than a commersial company that wants to sell to a large audience. Nobody has to buy this new body and there are many other nice boy dolls in the 70 cm range.

Although I have to admit that way back when the first pictures of the parts were posted my first reaction was "Who kidnapped Mr. Dollshe and replaced him with an evil clone?"
It's all a matter of taste. The original Dollshe dolls weren't liked when they were first released. I think it is mentioned in this thread that the first release of Bermann didn't even sell out. People love them now.

    43. The back looks normal and then in the side view it looks as if there is a sharp divide where the flesh seems to be cut away from the muscle or bone. I don't think that could possibly be considered normal for a human, so I really think this particular torso must go with the Origin sculpt only. Originally I hated the body, but if the torso were more normal I would like it.

I'm not fond of the knees, but my Bernard wears long trousers most of the time. The torso would be a problem though for open shirts.

    44. I think that if the muscles really bother someone - they can always sand them lightly to soften the harsher lines. I'm really enthusiastic about the body this time around. I like the chest, his arms, his back. I don't think I'm particularly fond of his rib cage & ab area, but its nothing that can't be worked on. I just pray that his hips don't bite and that his knees can balance out his weight this time around.

The issues I had with my Dollshe Bernard were: [1] His hip popping constantly out of place and biting me when I'd put it back & [2] the incessant unlocking of his knee joints. I could never stand him up on his own.

Nothing will piss me off faster than a doll that can't keep still. And as much as I loved my Bernard, I hated his body. Couldn't set him down on his feet for a second before he'd fall straight down like a pile of skeletal bones. I sincerely hope that the new bodies were designed to reflect better mechanics. Considering that my doll will be dressed 80% of the time, his very cyborg-like features don't bother me one bit.

    45. The only difference is that its OUR money he's being paid. If enough of us don't like the abs or whatever, some kind if improvement should be made. If it was just art on display that'd be different, but this is something people are paying for, and if its something worth $750 plus it should be made to be satisfactory. That said I love Mr. Dollshe's work despite little things I don't like about the new body, and will be buying a Saint regardless. You're definitely right in that a doll can always be modified, so its not that big of a deal.

    46. yes, but, no one is being "forced" to purchase the doll as it is. i don't think Mr. Dollshee has any responsibility to meet the public's demands, he is an artist.

    47. while I agree that nobody is being forced to buy, I do feel that this is a product designed to be sold to the public rather than as a purely artistic peice and so I think
Mr Dollshe may actually be intrested and do well to listen to peoples critique

I used to know an artist who sold his work near where I used to work, he did both realistic paintings (because he loved them, but they rarely sold) and more modern paintings (to match other peoples tastes and pay the bills) I consider dolls to be more in the second catagory most of the time, I dont expect Mr Dollshe to completly change his style or even comepletly change the sculpt of the new body just to pander to every little niggle someone raises but I think maybe some refining may be in order if he wants to apeal to a wider audience :sweat

    48. Can't agree more!!

I think the problem is.."are you taking this doll as an art or as product?"
But yes, negative feedback can help the artist to grow, but I don't think Mr. Kim has to change his doll just to meet the public desire.
If you don't like it, you don't need to buy it! Just leave the doll to people who admire the design.
In reverse, it's Mr. Kim who has the power to choose "change or not to change"
If he thinks his doll should be treated as consumer products, he should better listen to his potential buyers...
but if he believes Origean has accomplished to the ideal BJD he dream of, then why ask him to change?

    49. If he wants more people to buy his dolls then it would be a good idea to listen to what people want. But he is in no way required to do so. It's not a matter of business vs art like there's some sort of difference between what someone makes and sells and "real art". The goal for many artists is to make something they like AND be able to sell it. It doesn't usually work out that way but it's not like you have to bend to the consumers will if you want to charge. Just because someone sells something doesn't make it a product designed purely to sell. Even if it was no one is entitled to anything it's just a good idea to know your market. People will buy his dolls regardless. Sure it might not be as many, it might be more, we don't know.

    50. i think this sculpt is a direct result of the Dollmore situation. he got seriously burned, maybe he figures if he does something really radical, there is less of a chance of being ripped off again.

    51. Huh...yanno, I was going to say that I find that new body hideous, but on looking at it again, I actually *do* like it. I can see him as some kind of alien or cyborg or maybe an exterminating angel (*cough* yes, I have been listening to the Creatures lately, why do you ask? XD) with big, ragged black wings and tattered robes.

    52. Nope. I look at it again and again. And there just isn't one thing I like about that body. Maybe the hands and feet. But the arms, legs, knees, shoulders, etc....

I like my dolls to be a full-package sorta deal. I have to love the body and face. Because I don't want to keep my dolls completely clothed all the time.

Edit: Though, amusingly enough it is the thighs that bug me the most. Everything else could be sanded. The thighs look weird to me, but I just can't put my finger on why.

    53. I think it's because the part at the knee-joint seems thicker than the part at the actual thigh-joint, like his thighs are upside-down. It may also be because of the way they seem to bend outwards.

    54. I know this probably sounds crazy but I keep thinking that this body is just for that face and he is going to spring a super fantabulous body on us at the last second ... lol

    55. :?
Personally, I'm not going to focus soley on this body alone as I
think it's still too soon to speculate that this is the *only* body that will be
offered (& 'suggestions to the artist' are premature). A Dollshe website will
eventually open and I'm sure there will be more heads and bodies to
choose from. It only makes sense to me.
      :)

    56. I agree. This is just the beginning. The start of a new Dollshe. So I am very sure there will others in the future as the company grows.

So I look forward to him carry these new joints into new body sculpts.

    57. This thread has gone over it's 1,000th post and will be locked. The new thread for discussion is [thread=269001]here[/thread].
