Nendoroid Doll

Jun 12, 2018

    1. *snickering*

L's new bod arrived this afternoon, and it somehow seems appropriate that I tend to use the cheeky 'side-eye' faceplate for him...

At the moment he's perched here on my desk, in his red chair, with that smirk that seems to perfectly sum up "Yep! I'm starkers."

'Going to have to do something about that.

Lucky for me, he's not exactly the "fancy dress" type.

Aaaaamd... I may have gone and ordered another regular Nendo. I play Onmyoji and... well... Seimei. What can I say?

    2. There is a Link! I have Majora's Mask Link myself.

    3. There is also Breath of the Wild Link too!

    4. I did not know there was a Nendoroids thread in the depths of DoA...

I started collecting them last year, only around late September, and I amassed 14 by late November. With 3 on pre-order. Oops, how did that happen?! :sweat

I took two months' break, unintentionally, before recently adding a fourth pre-order and a 'standard' Mikazuki Munechika off Mandarake (where most of mine have come from). With the pre-orders, my collection is 68.75% Touken Ranbu. The others are just ones I adore too much to resist!

    5. @ivorysand yep, just like potato chips! Just one more, lol. Just when you think you’ve gotten them all, Goodsmile *grins and rubs their hands, and has pre orders of your most favorite franchise. Yep, doomed!

    6. That's why I deliberately don't follow which Nendos are coming out when, lol. I got both of mine on sale.

    7. I absolutely love Nendroids, but don’t have any of the dolls yet. I have seen the full doll releases as well as the body and head parts. Are you able to use the nendroid heads and attach them to the articulated body or does that creat a weird color issue (my nendroids are not all the same color)?

    8. Even as old as my L is, his head matched the cream colored doll body pretty well. It's not perfectly the same color, but it's not bad at all.

    9. For those experienced, where is the cheapest place to order Nendroids from for those of us in the USA? Should I go directly from the Goodsmile USA store or is it cheaper to pick them up elsewhere? Also are pre-orders cheaper or about the same price wise when it is all said and done? I don't think I am going to be able to resist Nendoroid Kumoko. :chomp:

    10. Krissim, I would say it depends on a few varying factors. Goodsmile USA charges sales tax, their flat-rate shipping is only 4-5, but has no tracking from what I've read, they have Kumoko for 55.99. Lunartoystore has Kumoko for 51.99 and they have a flat-rate shipping as well of $5, but again they might charge sales tax depending on your state. AmiAmi has Kumoko for 4870 yen, but I have no idea what their shipping rate is for a single Nendoid figure, from Japan. I usually purchase straight from Japanese retailers, because I have a lot of other stuff shipping at the same time, so it saves me a few bucks on shipping compared to purchasing from USA retailers (unless they are exclusives). It's probably cheaper to get Nendoroid from the USA, if it's only one Nendoroid, and probably even less if you are willing to look around. Some USA retailers have the same Nendoroids for a few dollars more or less than Goodsmile USA, but their shipping might not be as in/expensive, or they might not charge sales tax, etc. Hope that helps. (:

    11. Thank you for the helpful info. After digging around, it does seem like the best deals involve needing enough to either qualify for free shipping or ordering enough to offset shipping from overseas. When I looked, most of the places that weren't super overpriced were about $5 or so within each other. So far, Lunar Toy Store seems to be the cheapest in the US. Do you happen to have any experience with them as a company?

I do think even with shipping, I could get it a little cheaper from one of the overseas stores, but not having to deal with currency conversion/hidden cc fees associated with that, probably makes it not worth it for me.

Since this Nendoroid doesn't come with a pre-order bonus, there is also always the option of waiting until it is out to take my chances scooping up a deal on ebay/dealer having a sale. With as long as the pre-orders take, I'm thinking that might be a better option. Even if it does cost me a bit more, I will be way more patient waiting if I don't actually have an order in someplace.

    12. No problem, Krissim, glad I could provide at least some basic info for you. (:

I have never personally ordered from Lunar Toy Store, but I have heard only good things from friends who have shopped from them. They also sell only legitimate items, so you never have to worry about counterfeits from them. There's also bigbadtoystore, which I did recently purchase from, but they tend to be a bit on the higher side of USA retailers to shop from, when it comes to Japanese toys, particularly Nendoroid -- although they also offer flat-rate shipping. If you pay through Paypal, you can avoid currency exchange fees by adding foreign currencies to your payment option methods, and converting the amount you need to that currency, before you pay. Hope that helps. (:

    13. @Krissim there is also The Chibi Chop Shop. They have begun to accept pre orders for new releases. They also sell Nendoroid parts for customizing. I don’t know what they charge for shipping on full Nendoroids, but there is tracking and they have excellent customer service. Any issues I’ve had were responded too promptly. I don’t know any more than this as I haven’t done a pre order from them, just bought parts.

There is also the Big Bad Toy Store. The shipping (last time I had an order was around $6 for ups ground, their special price). Shipping just went up end of January here in the USA. They also charge sales tax. You don’t have to pay until the order is in, and can cancel any time before then with no penalty. Only issue is they are months behind in getting their orders as compared to sellers in Japan. Like three or more months behind.

As for shipping right now from Japan, it’s around $41 for a small, light box via DHL. I just bought three 1/6 scale plastic dolls from Mandarake and that is what I paid.

      Hope this helps!

    14. @kurogane
Oh, I didn't notice the Chibi Chop Shop started taking pre-orders.

Yeah, one of the bummers about ordering from a US distributor is it takes months longer, which I wouldn't mind if I knew I was getting a good price. When it feels like you are paying more to wait longer though...:doh

These were a lot easier to justify splurging on when they used to be $30-$35.

    15. @Krissim I agree. I miss those days so much. The prices were quite reasonable. You can get good deals in Japan, but the shipping is so expensive. I found some Mamachapp dolls for as low as $40, but the shipping is $40. It’s frustrating.

    16. Yes, any nendoroid after the neck joint update should definitely be compatible with the doll bodies parts-wise (I need to double-check my older nendos but I think they’ll work too; you’d just have to install the whole head vs. being able to use the newer mechanism). I’ve actually had a pretty poor experience as far as color matching. I have the cream, peach, and almond milk male doll bodies but none of them are particularly close with the nendos I have. The best match is probably the cream for my palest ones, but even then it’s not as good as I would like.

    17. I just got the shipping notice for Sakura Amamiya that I ordered from GoodSmile in the June 2020 preorder. She should be here tomorrow! I will have to set some time aside to photo her with my DD Sakura.

    18. Kicking myself for not just waiting for the Man bodies to end up in the CCS instead of preordering. Still waiting for shipping notice. Also, my suits are still trapped in the mail, whee...

    19. Goodsmile is taking suggestions for new nendoroids/rereleases right now! (I might have put in for more Mo Dai Zu Shi and Ace Attorney already).

It also sounds like they're considering bringing the custom faceplate system to other countries, which would be great for making custom characters!

    21. I finally finished the custom Nendo for my friend! Her name is Estella and she's pictured here my my sweet bean Monster.

    22. I got the Man body in and I used my Deku head to test it. I'm waiting to get a custom face for it and my third cinnamon body and then hopefully my custom collection will be finished. Unless I want to try out more hair. And that is to say nothing of character dolls. My Deku needs his own body, le sigh. Almond matches best, right?

    23. @iamkathybrown I used almond for my Deku and it’s the closest. Your customs are really nice!

    28. Urgh. I told myself no, no, NO! But I just caved and bought a Black Butler Sebastian, because his little cloth butler outfit with the waistcoat and tie was just so darn cute. I am hopeless. :sweat

    29. I'll admit that I was tempted, too... But I'm still waiting on Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe. I keep telling myself that those two (along with my L and Seimei, who now both have doll bodies-) are enough.

I'm not sure I believe it.

    30. Potato chips. It doesn't matter what you tell yourself, there will never be enough! :sweat

    31. Yep. That's how I ended up with seven instead of the four planned. And I'm still hoping for an eighth...

    32. Kurumi Tokisaki (Date A Live) Nendoroid

I didn't know her character when I bought her, I liked her clock eye and style

    33. Ummm, yeah, I have 20…so…yeah there’s that. Oh well :sweat :doh.

    34. These are so cute!! Are there make your own kind of kits or are they all usually licensed characters?

    35. They're sold as licensed characters, but can be mix-and-match kit-bashed and repainted to make originals. They're fun to customize. (I'm about to paint some new hair for Seimei. It started out brown, but needs to be white-)

      • x 1
    36. I love that you can modify them afterward, especially if you love the look but don't even know the character. I bought 2 Inuyashas to make one be his human self. That was fun to modify the one.

I have a bunch of the dolls that have become just my own characters. Even put real wigs on them. This one wears Picco Neemo shorts and short sleeved shirt, those are picco Neemo shoes too.

    37. Thank you @stellarphenomena! I had fun making him. Taking off his ears and patching it up was the hardest part. I learned a lot doing it.

    38. Good Smile makes blank heads and blank bodies, so you can make your own figure or character not only with their licensed characters but also from blank parts.
They sell the parts in four different colors, if I am not mistaken:

I purchased a blank head to go with either of my bodies (whichever doesn't match my double of Sasuke Uchiha), but I procrastinate so I haven't rebodied my intended Nendoroid. The blank heads are supposed to work with the regular Nendoroid hair parts, but I haven't unboxed any of mine yet. I own six or seven doubles to unbox one and keep one in box, and probably twenty that I have no plans to unbox. DX

There's also a brand called Piccodo, that sells dolls similar to Nendoroid dolls, but with slightly different proportions, they don't sell separate heads from what I know:

    39. I have a few nendoroid dolls but I end up getting bigger bodies that are sturdier cuz it sucks trying to pose them and their leg or arm falls off xD this is my latest one though. Momo from Idolish7 on a tall YMY body!

    40. @Amakai thank you for sharing your Nendoroid on the YMY body. I like the look of it and will check it out. I’m always needing more bodies, lol.

    41. Oh for sure! YMY is really nice. I also have a different strung body by UFdolls for nendoroid heads.

    42. @Amakai Your Nendoroids are so adorable! And another body option, so happy!

I’ve tried the Obitsu, but I hate the arms falling off, like constantly. :x The cu-poche are ok, but you have to mod the neck peg shorter and then the head falls off. So far the Nendoroid bodies are working, but I don’t like the style of the body. The legs look odd the way they designed the joints, but that’s just my opinion. At least nothing has fallen off.

My most current project is a Wind Waker Link on a Nendoroid body. I just got the fabric for his outfit and will be drafting a pattern for his tunic. The boots are going to be a challenge. I’ll do them last, lol.

    43. Ahh, I finally ran across someone with the UFdoll bodies. How do you like them? Do they tend to fit clothes often aimed at the other more popular bodies for nendos? I've been strongly considering getting some to make some nendo dolls. One of the reasons I've avoided playing around with nendoroid dolls in the past is I really dislike the look of most of the more traditional bodies, and I tend to hate anything that attaches via pegs because it always seems like something is falling off. :sigh

    45. @stellarphenomena I’ve never seen that version of Miku before! She reminds me of Tinkerbell with a steampunk vibe.

    46. @kurogane: She was designed by @rellakinoko, illustrator for Miku Symphony 2018-2019, 2020 (5th Anniversary) and 2021's visuals for various vocaloid producers. The regular statue done in this design is just perfect!

    47. Yea obitsu and cu-poche aren't all that great. Neither are the default Nendoroid bodies xD I definitely like YMY bodies a lot more.

Yes! They're so amazing. I love the softness of them and though it's a little hard to get some clothes (mostly socks) on them, all the other obitsu clothes fit just fine. They have like a velvety touch to them so it can make things like pants and socks hard to get on cuz they don't slide up as easily. I do really like them though. My only complaint is how flimsy the arms are. They definitely can't hold things that are heavy and they can't lean back on them easily.

      • x 1
    48. They're oddly cheaper than the eyes? Two faceplates plus shipping is about $35 USD, but one pair of eyes plus shipping is $48! How bizarre!

    49. I was excited, but I have nothing to use them for! I guess that's good for my wallet. I'll just keep ordering custom faces and waiting for Eraserhead...

    50. Today was the first time one of my Nendoroid doll bodies decided to *upset me greatly* by having one of the knee joints fail and the lower leg falls off. I didn’t know this was an issue, but now I’m officially disappointed.
I absolutely hate it when arms/legs/heads fall off! I ordered a replacement YMY body. Maybe someday I will have a doll that will be sturdy and I can feel confident to take it out and not constantly worry about loosing a body part.

    51. Yeah.... L has been a real pain in the rear about losing legs. I may have to explore alternate bod possibilities for him, too. It's annoying. <_<

In other news, Shen and Luo have shipped at long last! The little guys should be here Monday. :celebrate
