Narae and Narin 60cm discussion

Oct 11, 2006

    1. i have been using mack silicone earplugs to hold my dollie eyes in with, and been happy with it...

    2. Thank you Diane, but what just exactly are "mack silicone earplugs"? And where do you find them?

    3. they are ear plugs sold at the grocery store or drug store. blobs of clear-ish silicone that are squishy and user friendly. i use one blob split in half to set two eyes...

    4. Please tell me its much easier to work with than eye putty. I always manage to get the putty on my fingers and wind up smudging the eyes!

    5. Thank you Diane, I will give them a try!

This is another sweater I wanted to knit up for myself. It appeared on the cover of the magazine, “Machine Knitters” a few years ago. I loved the 3x3 ribbing effect. I never could get my machine ribber to work correctly for it and gave up, thinking I would try it later, doing the ribbing by hand. It seemed like such a daunting task that I decided to try it for Ava. She looks great in purple and other dark colors that contrast with her pinky-white skin tone.

I had intended to do a dressy pair of pants for it but skirts are easier to draft up and I thought a long, straight skirt with a long slit would be very sexy with the fitted sweater. The skirt is out of silk and is lined. I made up the pattern myself. I made the purse out of real black leather to match the boots, the only part of the outfit I did not make. The boots are by Volks. I made the tights from a pair of real tights for girls. Ava “borrowed” the necklace from Lark. The colors in the necklace matched the yarn perfectly.

The sweater is out of 100% Merino lace weight wool by KnitPicks. The color is called “grape”. The 3x3 ribbing hugs her waist. I used it on the sleeve cuffs as well, unlike the original sweater I duplicated. It had the same single crochet shell stitch that I used around the neck and front edges. I also did I-cord for her tie. I used the same gauge that I use on my 43cm Naraes, which meant many more stitches and rows but I love the scale as it looks like the original version.

I just lucked out on the beret. I used the same pattern I have used for my smaller dolls, just making it bigger around. I had to improvise as I went along but it came out like I wanted. That does not happen all the time!

    6. I love all her purple :) so pretty.

    7. chrissa5girl- yes, i find it very easy to use, and not too messy. reasonably priced, too!
      dollswest- gorgeous girl!

    8. That's so pretty dollswest! I'm jealous, I wish I was any good at making my dolls clothes xD

    9. Dollswest, the clothes that you are making for you doll are gorgeous. She looks very sheik. You are very talented. Right now I’m working on stuff for my doll, but it is very irritating because I don’t know what I’m doing, still in the learning process.

    10. Thank you! I sure am having fun dressing these big girls. I think I have a jeans pattern at last! While I see these girls in dressier type clothes, everyone needs a comfy pair of jeans! And I love to knit for them, despite the fact it takes me so much longer. Oh well, winter is almost here and that means a lot of time indoors!

    11. What a gorgeous purple outfit! So proffessional looking...

& In other news my last dolly is being shipped out today. My Narin 60... Methinks he is going to be very spoilt, showered with clothes and accessories. :)

    12. Gorgeous sweater. I love that it is in correct scale. I knit by hand and just can't do such small work justice.

    13. I just ordered my girl Saturday! I'm really happy I finally decided to take the plunge:)

    14. Dollswest: I just love that sweatshirt every time I see it. do you ever plan on selling some of your creations?

I have this dress I made for Callisto pretty much done. I might add wraps for the arm sleeves made out of the same material as the vest; uhg, I have to clean off my sewing table first. It’s a total mess. My sewing machine is giving me grief. I just had to vent a little bit. I’m still working on her Halloween costume. Don’t know if that will actually be done for Halloween.

I redid her face up again:roll:. I blame my short attention span, but I think this one will hold my interest for some time.

If you go to the link you can see more pictures of her in her dress.

    15. oh, laura, her dress is so nice! I love this fabric you chose and green color is lovely! Wish I have at least little ability to sew

    16. Haruko - that is great news! What did you order?

Laura - lovely dress. So nice to see photos of everyone's dolls and what they do with them. I really enjoyed all your photos. Great job!

The sweater I knitted is actually called a cardigan. While I love to knit, sew, bead and crochet for my dolls, I do not have any plans of selling what I make. It is just a hobby that I truly love and it is hard to turn a profit with a hobby that you enjoy. But thank you for asking!

    17. Dollswest: Thank you! I ordered a Tan French Resin 60cm Narae, with a face-up:)

    18. Diane - thank you again for your suggestion on the Mack silicon ear plug stuff. It works great! I love it, no more dropping eyes now!

Haruko - Wonderful, you will love her. She just poses so well! And the French resin is great, still my favorite!

    19. As soon as I saw this sweater on the KnitPicks site, I knew I had to make it for Alexa (Narae SD). I loved the look of it and it would be just sporty enough to go with the jeans I drafted up for her. I found the tank top fabric in my bin of tee shirts that I no longer wore but saved for “dolly” clothes.

The sweater pattern uses a “staghorn” cable. Some books refer to it as an “antler cable”. The yarn is KnitPicks 100% lace weight Merino wool, my absolute favorite as you know! The color is “snorkel”. I knitted up a cap using the same cable design.

The “hobo” bag is an enlarged pattern from www.danielbingham.com. It is very easy to whip up. I love Janice’s designs. The jeans sport my own label, “dwd” for dollswest designs! Although I don’t plan to sell them, I thought Alexa would think she was extra special if she had her own label! The aqua tennis shoes I purchased from releaserain on ebay.

    20. Wow your girls are so lucky to have such a great seamstress! Looks fabulous. :)

Well, I got my final boy on the 29th Oct. He is my rendition of The vampire Armand. I love him! :D I just want to get some more glowy/deep ambery eyes for him.

    21. Wow Bwiel! I LOVE your Armand! He is gorgeous! I love the pose too. He looks so seductive. And thank you for your compliments. I appreciate it.

This has been kind of a quiet group lately. I know the "big ones" are not as popular as the 43cm Narin/Narae dolls, but I sure am enjoying my two big girls. As mentioned before, I love the way they pose. And those hands just never cease to amaze me at the sculpting that Bimong did on them. I do not plan to buy anymore big ones as these two do take up a lot of room. And it is much harder to knit and sew for them. I am getting used to getting my patterns to fit their bodies now.

I have three SD Volks that I want to knit and sew for as well. So it is going to be tough trying to keep all my "dolly children" happy and well dressed. But as far as beautiful girls go, I love the faces of my big Narae girls the best. Even my husband thinks they are so life like, just like real models. Glad he supports my passion so much!

    22. Thankyou! I love him, I like how he poses, feels...everything. He is my fave SD that i've bought. Im surprised theyre not more popular.

    23. Armand is so beautiful Bwiel! What a wonderful face-up you have on him. He is a total dream:fangirl:! I’ve been struggling with mine. I starting to wish that I had narae do it. Then I wouldn’t be so picky every time I see a flaw or decide something isn’t right. It’s mainly because I really judgmental on my own work, but I wouldn’t be if someone else had done. There also wouldn’t be any flaws if I had narae do it.

Dollswest your girl is looking so good in that cardigan you made for her. Keep posting pictures of your work I love seeing it. it almost makes me was to learn how to knit. She looks just wonderful.

I redid my girls face because I missed see all of it. it was being covered by that tattoo. It’s ok for now. I’m hoping to get an airbrush, maybe for Christmas, and hopefully I’ll finally get the look I what.

Is it possible to send you faceplate back to narae to get if painted?

    24. Hey Dollwest, I really like her in that blonde wig- so realistic!

    25. Thank you Bluehaiku. I should have mentioned what it was in my lengthy description! It is by jpopdolls, called "Taiki". I think it was only for male dolls but thought I would give it a try. Gosh, I have spent so much money trying different wigs on all of my girls, big and small. Some work and, as we all know, some just don't!

    26. bluehaiku & dollswest: OMG, your knitting is so beautiful...love the colour and design...my hands feel like giants when i try to knit for even adult narae :(

    27. I here a beautiful picture of Callisto in her current face-up.

    28. She looks very romantic!

    29. Callisto's faceup goes so well with her red hair. Need more beautiful redheads! Thank you.:D

    30. Callisto's faceup goes so well with her red hair. Need more beautiful redheads! Thank you.:D

    31. Thank you Bwiel and Pixiepie. glad you think she is romantic looking. i was hoping for that because it if her character as Collist. and i am loving her as a redhead.

    32. Could anyone make a photo for me of an narae classic face without face-up? front on and 3/4 and from the side? I'm very curious at how she looks without face-up and couldnt find much (good ) photo's.

    33. Bwiel,
Your Armand is abso;utely breath-taking. Did you do the face-up? Personally I love his dark brown eyes.

    34. Yes I did his face up! Quite pleased with it as a first attempt on him. Thankyou!

    35. I am just loving Armand. Love how he looks in your avatar, so mysterious, and hansom. Wow, first try. I took me quite a bit redos to get Callisto’s face how it is now. Good job.

    36. Yes I did his face up! Quite pleased with it as a first attempt on him. Thankyou!

Wow - you are very talented. He looks so alive in the last photo - actually in all of them.

    37. Laura, I love your girl's new face. She is great as a red head.

It is so nice to see this thread stay busy.

I was working away on another outfit for Ava but got sidetracked. That is not unusual. I had an idea for a dress and thought I would try it on one of my smaller Naraes before I attempted it on one of my big ones. And this time of year makes it hard to get a lot of dolly things done. It is so funny to pick up the smaller ones now after working with my big girls. I really, really love the way these big ones pose. I know I have said this before. They are just super to play with. They have a more mature look and that makes them so different from the smaller Naraes. But, then, I just LOVE them all!!!

    38. Does anyone have eyes from masterpiece in their girl or boy? If so what size did you get? Masterpiece doesn’t have even sizes so I was wonder what would work best.

      Thanks dollswest for the complement.

    39. I have been a bit behind here.

Let's see, I use Eyeco eyes in my big girls. I get them on ebay from bjbabes (I think). I bought 13mm and 15mm for them. Both work fine for the standard open eye (my Ava) and the mature face plate (my Alexa). It just depends on the look I want whether I use the 13 or 15mm size. I find Masterpiece a bit pricey for the quality and use Eyeco in all my Narae and Unoa dolls now. I love the colors and fit. I get the "platinum" ones. You can see all the colors on www.eyeco.com. But I do not buy directly from them. The gal on ebay is cheaper and the service is better.

I remember asking Catrina about Masterpiece eyes once and she no longer carried them because of problems getting them. Audrey's dolls used to as well but had the same problems. So that is why I use Eyeco instead. Hope this helps!

    40. thanks Dollswest, do you have a preference between 13 and 15. I would think that 13 would look more realistic and 15 would look more anime. Not that these dolls have a problem looking realistic. Actually was planning on buying from eyeco, but I shall check out that other one on ebay. The eye I want is from the fantasy collection. Though, I do like those metallic eyes masterpiece has, but I don’t think that is what I want for Callisto. I am almost done making her a Christmas dress. I’m trying to get into the mood for the holidays. I thought that it would help. I just love sewing for her, and designing cloths for her. It is so much fun. She may have been a small fortune, but the enjoyment I’ve gotten from her is well worth it. Plus she make for good company during those time I have nothing to do.

    41. I think I like 13mm first, then 15mm. I keep both on hand though. I just ordered two more pair for my Volks head. I have lots of glass eyes on hand but the soft eyes fit the eye sockets better on the resin. When I made porcelain dolls you made the sockets fit the eyes but I am afraid to attempt this on resin. I could always pour another head if I goofed up the eyes. These resin kids are too expensive for that!

I am looking forward to your Christmas outfit. I know what you mean. These big ones are so much fun to dress. Trouble, is, I have so many naked dolls now and so many ideas. And all want attention!

    42. Okay guys, you've hit your 1,000th post! :sumomo:

I'll be locking this puppy up but please feel free to start the Narin and Narae 60cm Discussion Part II whenever you want! :)
