I'll go first of course! I wish a lot of companies sold accessories/outfits of an upcoming/new released doll instead of just having to buy the whole doll. Can't tell you how much money I would actually spend on clothing/accessories of dolls instead of just getting the doll. I have had people tell me try a taobao agent or 3rd party person and sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. It's such a shame the outfit/accessories are not an option. What's something you wish were different?
That companies offered longer layaways, because sometimes I don't want to go through a dealer. And that Volks offered any kind of layaways since they're expensive.
I got a few there, and I agree with the OP post as well. Being able to buy single parts from a full-set, instead of being forced to buy the doll too, would have helped me soooo much. There are so many outfits or props I would have loved to get, but getting a split was impossible so I instead opted to not buy anything at all. Not sure what a company gains from that. Otherwise, I still wish more companies would have adopted the faceplate system Unoas have. Being able to buy several different expressions for a doll, and for a low price-tag, would be so great. Most companies don't even offer a sleeping version, and even then you have to pay the price of a full head. I'd rather buy 40 bucks to get my doll a new expressive face and be able to easily swap them out. Also more companies offering to buy single heads, instead of full dolls. Looking especially at you here, Iplehouse and Soom.
Darker resin colors! The "tan" most companies offer isn't even in the mid-range of human skin tones, it's ridiculous!
Several things! More variety in body types. It has gotten much better than it was when I started the hobby in 2008, but it's still not quite where I want it to be. I'd like to see more plus size dolls, both male and female. I'd like to see more extremely thin dolls. I'd like to see more muscular girls and squishy guys. I'd like to see wider height differences within the same sale. More variety in skin tones. Instead of just white, normal, (light) tan, I want to see a spectrum ranging from white to nearly black and everything in between. Dollshe and IslandDoll actually have a pretty good range, but I'd like to see more companies do it. More variety in facial features. So many dolls just have that basic generic big eyes, small nose and mouth look. Give me bump noses, pug noses, big ugly noses! Give me thick lips, thin lips, slightly crooked lips. Give me wide eyes, narrow eyes, hooded eyes. Give me sharp jaw lines, high cheekbones, big chins. I like my dolls to realistically look different from each other, just like the variety in real groups. All parts available to buy by themselves. Not just hands and feet, but things like a thigh piece or elbow peanut or whatever. It sucks when a piece breaks and you need a replacement and the company won't do it. Accurate eye sizes listed. I almost always buy eyes one or two sizes down from what companies recommend because when I buy the listed size, it seems like the iris always ends up taking up the entire eye hole with no sclera showing--IF the eye even fits in the eye well itself. I wasted $50 on the perfect 18mm eyes for Marci because AoD said that's what she took. They're huge and she actually needs 14-16mm. If a doll needs small iris eyes, I wish the company would say so.
Being able to buy every company's heads and bodies individually would be great... So many of them just won't sell a head without a bod or a bod without a head and that can get really awkward when it comes to things like event heads and hybrids.
For doll companies to not show a fullset if there is no fullset option available. I can understand if they are limited, but to show one that doesn't exist in the first place is a little disappointing. Also more licensed character dolls that don't only get sold in China/Japan. It would be nice to have more worldwide releases. I know it may be a licensing issue, but I don't see the point in region locking sales. Seems like a massive profit loss.
I agree with everything said above. More resin colors, more body heights and sizes and sculpts, more options to customize the face, the ability to buy what is pictured individually or at all. I literally cancelled an order with Soom because it turns out they were NOT selling the full set featured. They used to sell you everything on the doll. Now they might sell the eyes, they might sell the hair, they might sell the clothes. Only guaranteed thing is the doll and the face up if you pay for it. So all I could have gotten was the face up, the doll, and the clothes which were a joke compared to past releases. I would also love easy to find measurement charts so if I need to compare companies, I can do it easily. I also kind of wish more companies did what Withdoll did for me. I asked after their Egon doll and they re-released him for I want to say a few weeks. So I was able to order him. If your molds are still good and someone wants to give you money, why not re-release? I'm eyeing a lot of Sartoria J's clothing BUT I don't own any of their dolls. I love the look of their elf MSD dolls but guess what, those are time limited. So I have to wait and SEE if I will like any future release OR try to get a doll second hand. It's kind of killing my interest.
So so frustrating when they show faceup/outfitted fullsets but only sell the blank doll. I wish they would just display a blank frikkin doll. More skin color options and maybe a bit more mechanical scifi at times. Whether android or even steampunk.
I wish more companies showed sculpts from the side and three-quarters-view. I wish (quality) magnetic hands and feet were considered more standard; they're so helpful! ..and lastly, that more companies posted clearly the accurate standard wait times for their orders!!
I wish there weren't exceedingly quantity limited items, released without warning, at times that only one part of the world are even awake. It would be nice if there was either a warning, so that I could be prepared to stay up that late, if there were slightly more of the limited item (generally LE 3 is gone instantaneously), or if there could be a lottery, instead of just first come first serve. There's nothing more frustrating than finding something I wanted was gone instantly, especially when companies that don't normally do quantity limited items do quantity limited.
I really, really wish more companies showed pictures of their dolls without faceup and naked on sale pages. Yes, yes, it's nice to see the doll all dressed up in artistic photos, but actually I need to see it completely bare too so I can get a real idea of its proportions. Because I've had a bad experience due to this, I'm now highly suspicious of any company that doesn't show at least one naked picture of their doll. also, yeah, wish more companies sold their fullset clothes separately. Also, I wish companies like LoongSoul had more 1/4 dolls, and with a more mature look. I really, really love the look of their 1/3 and 70cm dolls in traditional outfits, but the size just doesn't do it for me...
Shhhhh. this is a new party! I feel this on a personal level. So for the longest I loved 46-48cm females. Only 50cm dolls that were available aren’t around anymore. I forgot the name but alicebjd took them off completely. I found the 70cm males looking so handsome and built and just sexy. However I couldn’t find any at 50cm dolls thet look that gorgeous and that scrumptious in height. Until I found DOLLNOIZE
I wish more companies would bring back old limited edition dolls or at least offer heads! I understand though that is the point of limited edition, but I still want one lol!
For anniversary things that could be cool... I wonder if companies keep at least one of every original sculpt they made in a closet somewhere... some of them could do post photo exhibitions for historical interest, I think.
Definitely more varieties of face and body shapes, and better darker toned resins. Also better customer service? I see a lot of stories on this site and it just makes me look sideeye at dolls I would otherwise consider getting.
It's been a while since I ordered anything overseas, so I don't know if this is still the case, but almost no companies offer SAL shipping! If I order a doll, I get it. I'll pay for the high shipping fees. Wigs, shoes, and clothes? I definitely do not need or want to pay for EMS for those! This puts me off so much from ordering non-doll items from overseas companies.
More variety in skin colors, the tan is usually not even close to tan. It is Southern European at best but that is technically still "white". There need to be more dolls in dark colors. :') Face sculpting and company faceup. Some companies have very repeptitive faces and their faceups are idk bland? I get that they cannot offer the same as a pure faceup artist out of cost and convenience but I wish they worked together with more professional artists and offer custom faceups. And some need to increase their promo pics because some promo pics will turn me away right away but when I see owner pics I am captivated by the doll! More variety in body type for male and female dolls. I am tired of these washboard ab, square shouldered 17 year old looking MSD boys. And tired of the very thin female dolls. These body types are beautiful too of course but it is sad to see that they make up 99% of company doll bodies. I want curvy bodies or small bellie pouches or just a mid sized body. More mature MSDs, my favorite doll size is MSD but I find it sad, that the only dolls available look between 15 and 23. I would love a mature male MSD especially because most look like little boys. Options for prosthetic legs, arms or other things similar to that. I feel like nothing would be easier than making a prosthetic limb for a doll because they already have "artificial" limbs Last but not least, being able to buy stuff from fullsets individually or buying heads seperate from the bodies. Edit: also not showing the jointing system on their page and range of motion is a pet peeve of mine. I don't want dolls that can only bend their knee 90° but some companies just show their different bodies and you seriously jave to guess how much they are able to move
Honestly I wish more companies updated their websites to be more easily accessible, such as in-stock vs out of stock sorting, better classification of their doll's size on the side bar and more. They all come up with special names for each size but it ends up getting really confusing when one company has 12 different lines of dolls. Lot of sites too are just overall difficult to order from or are very confusing in regards to shipping and haven't been updated since like 2005.
I want better photos of the sculpts. Photographing Face/body sculpts in multiple angles. Not just that but comparison photos. If you have multiple body types photograph them together for a more informed purchase. Show resin tones compared to ‘popular’ companies resins. Or just we’ll photographed examples of all their resin tones. Like everyone I also just want darker resin tones. Very few companies even offer a mild tan. I hate buying the same skin tone, I’d rather skip on a msd then get another ‘normal’ resin tone
I wish more companies offered layaway options. Even though I'm not actively purchasing resin anymore (I only have one doll in my wishlist at this point) it would still be extremely helpful for a lot of people and it would have certainly helped me a ton, too. I also wish more companies offered tan options, from lighter to darker tones. A majority of my doll characters are Japanese and normal skin is just too light for most of them. There are exceptions among them, of course (Yasuo, just Yasuo really, he's supposed to be very very pale), but most of the time I have to blush them to make them look more like themselves. And then you run into the problem of other people of colour too. Durga is Indian for example, and it took me so much pain to try to shell him in a sculpt that would reflect his skintone as well as the way he's supposed to look. And to go hand in hand with the above... more racial characteristics in sculpts please... Where are all the interesting bone structures and noses and just... everything. I know some dolls are supposed to be stylized and more anime like and I'm not complaining about those of course but even with companies that go the more realiztic route our options feel so... limited. Also in the same vein, more variety in body options. Where are my short males, or plump males, or those boys with slightly curvier physiques, my buff girls, or the really tall girls, or plus size bodies of any kind? Or really thin ones? Where is height variety within a single scale? We have the super massive side covered with SDs at least but what about everything else?
More unlimited options for darker skin. I know some companies that have had some very lovely tans and dark skin tones, but alas, those colors often get limited to a certain time of the year or even every other year. There's a couple of dolls I'm eyeballing but I really want them in darker skin tones, but who knows when I'd actually be able to order them. Going off of the last one, more variety in skin tones. It seems like most tans are pretty similar from company to company, and usually aren't that dark. I also can't stand the term "normal" skin; all skin colors are normal!
I would like to see more character like dolls.... older dolls, seniors, faces that are not all fashion model pretty but have more personality.
I wish the companies would have more clothes for every size doll they make. Finding things that fit and seamstress wait lists can be frustrating, a waste of time, and sometimes a waste of money. Also when you find a good seamstress that doesn’t have a wait list, their items sell out so quick.
Like you all, I want more companies to display the range of resin/skin colours when you are actually buying the doll. More times than not I have to scroll through the internet or beg for colour samples. Just have the colour samples next to the prices when you are viewing the doll . I also agree with the posts about adding a more robust range of darker colours for skin/resin, I would also appreciate more photos of the blank doll instead of them being faced up to the nines in the worlds darkest photo shoot backgrounds. In the same token, I really would like more close ups of the face sculpt while on the body, sometimes the floating heads or heads laying on surface kinda hamper my perception of what the head should really look like, if that makes any sense??? Annnnd lastly, like Rubytinker said, I would like to see more mature face sculpts for both male and female dolls.
Like a lot of people, more layaway or payment plans available as well as better web design. A lot of sites I’ve seen are pretty hard to navigate.
I wish the price of a full set would not be as high. and that some would keep sculpts available for those who would want them
I wish certain companies didn’t just produce a doll and have nothing else. Alchemic Labo is the worst offender for me. Unusual scale and they sell no clothes or accessories for us to buy. I see a lot of companies doing this. They have all these sculpt, but their clothes are constantly sold out.
Agree with the posters about a need for more tans. For me, I personally really wish companies would offer more in the way of skin tone temperature for tans. >.< I’ve seen a lot of tans which look very very warm and orange-y, which is lovely, but many tan people (including myself) have cooler olive-undertones. Bambicrony’s “milk choco” skin is the closest thing to my skin tone that I’ve found, though it could use just the tiniest bit more pigment. Just wish there were more like it out there!
I really want a chubby doll. There are many lovely independent artists who make chubby dolls but i cant afford an $800 msd, plus i would be afraid to own such a highly sought after item! Thats why im interesting in big bb because theyre the only chubby dolls i can really afford, but theyre all modeled to be children. It would be nice to have a more mature chubby doll.
Might just be me, but I tend to have issue finding guides on the companies resin colours. I wish they were easier to find. I also wish for more smirking, scowling, excited, pointy toothed female sculpts, and SD female bodies with flat/small chests.
@endogeny have you seen Argonautica Dolls site? They have plus sized mature women in both 1/4 and 1/3. Though they are all currently sold out. And I agree with what others have said about resin tone comparisons. Why can't companies at least put an easy to find page on their site showing their resin colors?
More use of dealers. I know it’s not ideal for everyone, but I prefer buying secondhand or through an official dealer. If something goes wrong then I have an extra person to help sort it out, I don’t have to use an unsecured site, and it’s easier to make one big purchase from multiple companies but only pay for one round of shipping. Resin comparisons. For a company that should want us to buy things, they sure make it difficult at times. Not being able to buy sleeping heads separately, especially with face ups.
Agree with the different parts being sold separately. I would love clothing. It's one of the few reasons I loved Iplehouse until they stopped bothering to do it except for miniscule meh stuff that's nice but not like what they used to have. I loved their full sets. Ringdoll and Loongsoul and Soom would definitely benefit from this too. Also, longer layaways. They always put stuff up but expect everyone to be able to order in such a short time. Being a real adult sucks when it comes to this. I'm also a bit tired of the very short limited runs. They don't give much of a chance for us to order them before it's gone. I understand it but at the same time, it's seriously a pain. Possibly occasionally offering the limited edition dolls again during holidays and anniversaries. Body shapes. Most are lean, muscular or femme fatale. I love them, but what about other types? Not everything has to be a model figure or tall- hello to every very short person out there with a tall counterpart. There are so many varieties of sizes and shapes. Probably not a popular opinion but I do wish some sculpts were offered in more than one size for those that may not collect all sizes. More nude and blank pictures, because to be honest not every company photo works great. Too many company photos looks excellent but once they arrive there is some seriously disappointed collectors. I also think more colors should be offered. Especially fantasy. I mean, people pay extra to those who do offer them so it shouldn't hurt too much to do it? There's really not enough gray or other color options. I get that you can dye a doll, but mess up and there goes the money you just paid. More fantasy type dolls. Elves- you can easily mod ears but others not so much. The human/elf aesthetic is really boring sometimes. Where's the creativity? Snake people and bodies, gryphon/hippogriff centaurs, multiple arm options, wings of all sorts- detachable types like customizers might make because it's really tough that you have a resin set but they need back holes modded if you don't have the right body, werewolves, tigers, lions, faeries, demons, mechanical body parts, etc. Same with pet BJDs. Bring more imagination to the table. I see people making ooaks for their dolls and I'm in love with all of it. I get it takes time. I agree with a lot of other things listed too. So it makes me wonder if anyone, especially the companies, will do any of it though it's doubtful.
Just remembered something else. In anatomy, there’s something called the “anatomical position”. It’s a standardized position that is widely used across references and textbooks. The body faces forward, is nude, palms are visible, flat feet, etc. I’d like to see the same concept for BJDs. Have whatever sales photos the company wants, but also at least one from the front and one from the back in a similar position.
Agreed! I know how to sew but my dolls spend a lot of time naked while I draft patterns. >_<' And sometimes there's stuff I want to buy for my dolls because it's outside my expertise or something I hate sewing too much to do by myself, but then I can't because it won't fit. The worst is weird shaped feet because there are even less shoemakers than seamsters. Dollshe 26F flat feet are the bane of my existence. Granted, Mr Dollshe is the target of a lot of my ire these days. *shakes fist at no doll in two years and non response on refunds* I'm always torn between my craving for increased body variety and how am I gonna clothe and shoe them.
heads and bodies and even arms and legs sold separately if ordered special. I don't mind paying a little more even. But help people customize!
Honestly? Pricing. If the prices were lower they could sell more dolls and in the long run make more money.
Different skin colors. Similar price for tan colors or darker colors. Being able to acquire items from fullsets like wigs or clothes or even shoes. I would like better eyes. Some companies give you the worst eyes sometimes.... the dolls come out of the box looking so creepy. So I already have a pair of eyes ready for such doll because I know the eyes they come with are so bad.
I really wish this was an option too. They could at least put the outfits up for limited release stock in their clothing sections as a separate listing. Even an option like preorder outfit set only or preorder prop set only on the main doll listing would be great. There's so many outfits and great accessories and props that I would have loved to own, but the only way I can really see going about getting them as it is right now, would be joining splits or posting WTB posts after people start receiving their fullsets, which isn't even guaranteed to yield what you seek. It seems unnecessarily difficult.
I definitely wish more companies were able to have a greater variety of darker skintone options. Most “normal skin” resin colors are lighter than me, and I’m a very pale white girl. I do understand why this is the case, but I just wish it wasn’t that way.
As an SD collector, I want more dolls in the 50-56cm range. I like that size especially since they look like short adults.
I wish that 5 Star Doll would come out with either new sculpts in the SD size, or re-issue old sculpts. I have several of their dolls, but there are ones I didn't get while they were still available,. Currently the SDs are all sold out and most of their older sculpts are not even pictured
Resin color options that aren't just pale, and REALLY pale, like everyone else. I know they're harder to do, and I understand the toxicity of East Asian beauty standards when it comes to complexion, but I genuinely don't feel either is a valid excuse in 2021 for an international hobby.
I want more companies to offer more hand options. You can get different hands for Smart Doll, Volks and Fairyland, but so many dolls come as either that very awkward sort of holding but not hands, flat hands or worse those hands that the fingers could break so easily. Instead of wasting time creating a new sculpt head that doesn't look much different then another head before, make us some hands, we can buy for the dolls we have already from you. I want my doll to hold a cup or at least look like she is, wave with a hand open not a fist, and give an okay or a peace sign not a claw.
Most of these have been already said in the thread before, but... -More skin colour options, not just white, "normal" skin and tan -More variety in body shape; I would love to have more chubby/thicker doll options -Option to buy a head and body seperately, many companies don't have this option -I would love more companies do sort videos for their dolls on instagram, youtube or their website, as it gives better idea how the doll sculpt looks in different angles
Idk if it’s been said yet, but I really wish there were more female dolls with small chests (like a-cup flat) that have a more mature look to them. It seems like your options are either “cute and innocent looking girl with tiny breasts, probably from the doll company’s “kid” line or something” or “mature looking face/body with massive boobs”. Bonus points for when you have options for the chest size and they’re like… size c and size e. Like, don’t get me wrong, those body types are nice, but I want to see a flat chested girl who doesn’t look prepubescent, you know? also, not as frustrating to me, but it might be cool to see some dolls with body hair some time? I think it would work on 1/3 dolls and some 1/4 really well, ones that look more mature/realistic. It would probably be really hard to get the texture right though, like imagine trying to draw leg hair with colored pencils.,. Eyebrows are already hard enough!
Now that I've been in the hobby for ten? years, there's something to this. It would be nice to have rereleases of the old dolls that were released in special colors that have not aged well, in a re engineered version of the color now that the companies have had ten years of experience making colored resin, so that people who don't want a beauty green, lemon yellow, green and red striped, or yellow grey doll can get a "new" version that isn't ten years of yellowing. So many companies had amazing concepts that just didn't age well because they yellowed so fast the resin clashes with the faceup or fullset.
I think number one would be that companies don’t photoshop their pictures. Of course not all of them do this. But my friend recently got a doll that looked nothing like the promotion pictures which is really sad if you paid that much. My second very unrealistic wish would be an european volks online shop like the USA Site. When they offered an full choice system order last year I was a bit jealous I think they ship from the us too if I’m not wrong so no extra custom fees or high shipping.
Echoing the desire for more skin tones than paper white and off-white. If Resinsoul can do it, I don't know what anyone else's roadblock is. More body types are always a wish, and more hand options, also. Maybe more common magnetic hand setups, too? That's something that's on my "try this mod" bucket list, because messing with s-hooks is a pain. I'd really like it if more companies would show picture of sculpts completely blank, from multiple angles, and in multiple poses if it's a body so it's easier to see how the jointing works. I don't need ten slightly different glamour shots of the doll in a fullset. I need to see what it actually looks like as I'll receive it.
It's already been said before in this thread, but definitely wish more doll companies updated their websites. Many are stuck in the early 2000s era, which makes it really difficult to navigate and search through products. If you are looking for specific information on a doll body, sculpt, etc., sometimes it can take a lot of webpage scanning and scrolling to find. To add to this first point--I wish doll companies didn't "delete" discontinued sculpts and bodies from their webpage. It can be really frustrating to have a rare, discontinued doll, and not have the company measurements, blank head, and so on easily available.
I would love more options for mature looking sculpts at a smaller scale. I love the aesthetic of sd sized dolls, but 60cm is just too big for me to see myself owning more than one.
I wish companies would offer the following. Paddle hands for helping with dressing dolls. Full measurements of the bodies, eye openings and head. Boy part being removable as that bulge can be a pain in pants. Stronger magnets so parts don't fall off and get lost. I also wish they would make the area where S-hooks goes a bit deeper so hook doesn't pop off in head. Maybe even allow for head to look up and down by adding a couple more spots for hook. Also to those companies who make clothes and shoes for dolls, not only give us measurements of doll in photos wearing the stuff, but how about making stuff that could be more like what real people wear, soft jeans, sweaters that button or snap, t-shirts that are loose fitting and shirts with tiny buttons that really snap as big buttons don't look scale. Also stop using pleather for shoes. Can't see spending $25+ on shoes that are going to fall apart. Make them out of good canvas or fabric that can look dressy.
I wish there was so much more uniformity in the colors. I am an African American (Sierra Leone/Nigerian) and I am the color of caramel literally. Brought a doll that was listed as caramel. When I got the doll that doll was not caramel at all she could of been light tan at best she was too light. I felt deceived love her anyway lol. Also uniformity in price because I shouldn’t have to pay more for a doll that looks like me. I also don’t like the lack of wig options available at major companies that display a variety of hair textures and styles.
Now that it's been made more or less standard by Chinese companies, I wish more Korean houses offered a paid seam sanding service, even if it's just for pale resin. I don't have a safe place to deal with resin dust and I'd rather pay to have the sanding done in-house. This is a bit annoying too.
I have to echo everyone saying more skin color options/darker skin color options. I have some OCs i think it would be fun to shell someday, but the options are pretty limited because of this.
I wish companies took their time and spent more time engineering/testing their dolls off-computer. 3D programs and printing allow to churn out new releases fast and they look detailed and exquisite but somehow the posing and posture end up disappointing in comparison to the aesthetics I understand why bigger bjd companies speed things up for business reasons but there is something more satisfying in handling a doll where the movement was planned in play and not solely on the screen. I'd also love to see the option to have dolls sent unstrung more often - I'll often restring them right away anyway and don't always want to have the company box to save space. Gimme kits! DIYing is all I wanna do! While I would love to have more resin colours available or that darker colours were the same price - darker tones are a PITA to cast and finish so I fully understand the choice some companies make not to provide them, or provide them as limiteds, in order to offer a quality product at a reasonable price for everyone. It's also difficult to make profitable minimums with niche colours - I really don't understand how Resinsoul does it!
