6/3/07: Update! I made more clothing, first post on page 2! <3

5/16/07: Okay, so for the past week, I've really been working on sewing for my girl! Every few days I would make a new outfit.

I'll admit, they're TERRIBLE but I really think I'm improving, especially since my sewing machine is really tiny and jams a lot. >_<

I'm posting my stuff in the order that I made them :3

The first thing I made were the pink stockings, with some assistance, of course.
Then the terrible snap-on shirt...the skirt is alright though, I suppose. And the armwarmers just fell apart. xD (I made this last Thursday)

I made the sweater, the skirt, the stockings, and the leggings. Sadly, the sweater and striped stockings are falling apart. >:
      (I made this last Friday)

At first I thought these pants were cool, until the crotch ripped out. ):
The shirt is cute, though. The armwarmers are still not that great.
      (I made this last Sunday)

Here's the torn up shirt again - fixed up. The armwarmers aren't falling apart! My first attempt at a long pair of pants, AND they have a crotch! Sadly, at this point they were baggy and the top of the pants didn't look like pants at all. xD
      (I made this yesterday)

But I did this today! The pants were fixed, they actually stay on her waist! There are a few mistakes but I must admit, it's better than what I was doing before.

      :3

Any critique and/or tips are helpful! Thanks for looking~

    2. Those army pants are so cute! ^^ I'm trying to improve my sewing as well. You've progressed wonderfully. I like the distressed look at the bottom. Very, very cute.

Edit: Did you use any certain pattern for the hoodie? I've been trying to make one, but it's tough to get a nice design. v.v Especially for MSD sized dolls.

    3. I don't use patterns. xD They confuse me! But my friend did tell me how to cut out the hood part, but that's about it. I experiment a lot before I do my 'final product'.

I could draw a pattern for you, if you would like...But I don't measure either.

    4. XD That's great, actually. ^^ You're just like me. :) I stare at patterns and go, "Uh... no." I just measure my doll basically and sew. Nice to know it's not just my own habit, though. ^^

    5. Hmm, you might want to invest in anti-fraying glue. Some fabrics really like to fray, so using the fray-block around the edges helps stop fraying in its tracks. That way, you can use any type of fabric without worrying about it coming unraveled. Of course, it won't fix bad stitching or designs, but at least you'll be able to use knits, silky materials, laces, and such without them falling apart.

    6. the last outfit i s very cool.
i like also the punk tee too!
the first one is a little bit rough, but the design itself is not bad!
I think that patterns leave you the space to think more at the details.
I sew for people only at the moment and without patterns(that I make myself) i know that certain results are not possible.
concerning the dolls I'vent tryed yet.But i thik I'll use patterns.
But your job is cool and you're very creative and I'm sure you'll emprove a lot!!

    7. These are actually very nicely designed outfits. And there's definitely a visible improvement in sewing skills.

Also, I quite like the distressing/fraying on the hem of the last pair of pants (the camouflage pair)

    8. Fray-check is a must. You can get a bottle at Wal-Mart or other stores for around 2-3$. It saves a lot of grief.. :)

Nifty hand-sewing attempts! I'm too lazy to do complete pieces that way, unless I have to. lol.. Something that might help with getting even stitches is to put dots with a water soluable fabric marker along the hem. (To help measure out and place the stitches)

    9. I think they're very cute! It seems like your biggest problem is them falling apart. Like everyone else said, the seam glue stuff is great! I've also used a zig-zag stitch to finish seams.

    10. Yea! I finally figured out how to do a zig-zag stitch on my last piece, that's why my hoodie isn't falling apart. :3

    11. Wow~ you progress wonderfully in just a week's time! :o great job!:thumbup I really like the army pants, it's COOL... :celebrate

Your girl must be really happy to have so many new clothing!

    12. Congrats on improving your sewing for your beautiful doll! I enjoyed your pictures of the creative outfits. I think your ideas are cool and punky. Punk stuff is one of my favorite styles, right up there with gothy flavored clothing. You are inspiring me! And I love the fabric you used on the pants in your last picture. Totally cool. Keep up the good work!

    13. Next time anybody asks 'how do i get better at sewing?' they get pointed straight here.

Great example of practice makes perfect. :sumomo:

Ok, you're not perfect yet. I'm not perfect yet, and I've been sewing doll-stuff for 25 years. You can suffer with me. ;)

Keep it up, and your doll will have a perfectly lovely wardrobe. Already a good start.

    14. Very good job!! I especially like the shirt with safety pins and the pants!! ^^

    15. Nice job! I agree; patterns are my worst enemy. I don't even have my doll yet (he's coming....so very slowly...T_T) but I stick with the given measurements and hope desperately that they fit.

    16. I'm somewhat envious of people who can sew without a pattern. I have to have to have to use one, even if I end up drafting it myself. And by "drafting it myself" I mean tracing something close and altering from there. I love the camo pants, by the way.

    17. :D

Thank you, that's the best compliment I've ever received on my sewing. :aheartbea

I think I might get pretty good as soon as I sew some more clothing (Haven't sewn since last week, but I'll continue as soon as get out of school on Thursday!) so I do have to agree with you!

Practice is the best thing that anyone can do~ X3 Oh yea, I'm not perfect! But I'm okay with that, as long as it's not falling apart, it's good to me!

And Viv's so much happier now that she has more than just an over-sized shirt and underwear on. XD

    18. This is pretty impressive improvement, like the others have said. It would be so hard for me to keep working like you did if things fell apart. :sweat I'd get irritated and have to leave off for a while.

Good luck when you start again. Your girl is going to have a lot of cool clothes. :D

    19. From what I've seen (especially in person) I'd say you're making such huge leaps and bounds in your progress it's not even funny! What's most impressive is that you don't use patterns, that's pretty admirable if I do say so myself. As with Gwenevere I must use patterns, and it gets discouraging when I can't make one I like. You have so much more drive than me, you just keep going even if it doesn't turn out the way you want. Whereas with me I go "Eh... this sucks" and then don't start again for about a week later.

Keep posting your new outfits, they're so adorable!

    20. I think you should be proud of your progress, I don't believe these are crappy at all and I've been sewing for a very long time :)

A job well done and keep at it!

    21. Yay, I made some more clothing! :3

Feel free to comment on these as well!

I made these a few days ago-
A faux-leather vest and tan cargo pants. :3

I made the pants extra long, so that when I get my 46cm boy he'll be able to wear them without worrying that they might be too short. So they're a bit baggy on Viv but that's okay!

    22. You improve so quickly it's no fair! >_< I wish I did that. Lol! I really like her pants, they look like snowboarder pants almost.

    23. You're doing a hell of a lot better than I was doing when I first started sewing for my dolls! Oh, the catastrophe X_X.

Since I know you're looking at a new sewing machine, you might consider getting overcast and stretch fabric feet to go with it if it doesn't come with any. The stretch foot since you seem to do a lot of work with stretch fabric and the overcast to help zig-zagging over edges if you choose to do that in the future- you'll still need fray-check though. You can also use overcast feet to help do long, straight lines if you don't have a blind stitch foot.

Also- where did you get that multicolor wig your girl has on in the first shots? It's so pretty!

    24. x3 Thanks!

And this is probably a stupid question-- but what is a stretch foot? :sweat

I got the wig from a seller here on DoA, it's secondhand, so I don't know who the previous owner commissioned it from.

    25. This is a knit/stretch material foot:

      http://cgi.ebay.com/Brother-Sewing-...hZ005QQcategoryZ41245QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

      Quothe the seller:

Said seller is reliable, but a little slow getting stuff shipped.

I've also seen them marked as "fine material feet", but that was in a discount bin and it's possible this was an error. I still got mine for a dollar. Mwahahaha.

They work quite well, but they do make an awful racket X_X.

And thank you! I will have to keep an eye out wig-wise then.

    26. Wow, you're making really fast progress! You should check out local thrift stores and used book stores. I picked up a Better Homes and Gardens sewing book from the 70's that's full of neat info and tidbits for like a dollar.

    27. Fist comment.. the hat? SO CUTE.
Secondly? I love the fact you're showing progression in your sewing! That is SO neat. (:

    28. how do you do those pants ._. they're so well done..

and i fail at anything that goes around the waist. XD

      you've come a long way!

    29. Those are great pants. They're just cute 'oversized', not ridiculous.

I think your proposed 45cm doll is going to have to ask Really nicely to get them. :)

Nice finishing on them, too. :D

      Ann in CT

    30. X3 Thanks everyone!

I also added a zipper to the pants so now they're super easy to get on and off- but I don't have any pics.

    31. Another update!

      >_< I tried making a zip-up hoodie-- didn't work out that great. My sewing machine was being mean and made my stitching weird and fall out. I don't know how to fix it...and then after I finished it all, I put it on her, and I went to zip it up--- And the zipper popped off. Yep.

Oh well, at least I know how I made this one so I can improve the next time I try.

I also made some jeans. They're more of a prototype, I would say, testing out some stuff and tried adding on a zipper instead of squeezing the pants on. It works, but the zipper is VERY obvious.

Oh, and the T-shirt. Ugh, I hate that thing. I sewed it allllll nice and great- but then I couldn't get it on her. >_< It's a perfect fit, but it wouldn't go over her chest so I had to pry it up through her legs. The material I used isn't stretchy- that's the problem.

    32. wow... you're coming along so quickly! I hope I can make as much progress with my own sewing when my girl gets here. I love the new jeans, your hems are so much neater than they were at the beginning of the thread.

    33. Wow. How do you make those pants? they are so cute! All of them are!

Like everybody else said, your progress is amazing. Its really very inspiring. :D

What kind of machine do you use? Im looking at some but have no experience in sewing at all >_<

    34. My sewing machine SUCKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSS. Like, really bad.

I'm looking into a type like this.

And I have this tiny thing.

    35. HAY LOOK! I MADE A WIG! X3

      Yaaay~

And I fixed the jeans a bit, so now she can sit without her butt showing. XD

    36. Your progress is... quite enthralling to watch. XD

And I ordered an AoD Ming too! =3

Can't wait till we both get him, ne? ^^

    37. X3 I'm so excited~ Xzavier is gonna be Viv's boyfriend~~

Congrats on your boy! I can't wait to see yours~ :D

    38. hello kayke, I just started sewing myself so I cant really comment much on the technical area.. but I think I like the clothes that you made :)... I sorta like the very first one that you made best...

Im pretty sure viv is a lot happier wearing the clothes that you make :)... she must be very lucky to have someone sew her clothes...

good luck on your sewing :)

Ive been thinking of making a thread like this one... maybe to get some help on my own sewing since I need a lot in my opinion...

    39. Waaaah!! Where'd you find the fur to make that wig? D: I can't find any anywhere. ;| Great job on all these clothes, btw. Very cute! :D I've been sewing clothes for my Cherry (who should arrive tomorrow)... maybe I'll post a sewing progession thread. :| Hmm.. *rubs chin*

    40. The fur is actually a spare tail I got from a kitty jacket. XD

I'm uploading better pics of it right now.

    41. :3 So last night I made some pants, a new shirt, and I styled her new wig I made a little more!

I also fixed up the vest, it's more vest-y now. XD

Oh, and I'm so excited, the top of the pants don't look like crap!

Sorry for the picspam, I wanted to make sure all the angles were shown. XD

    42. So punk! X3 That hair. She looks like somebody out of Tank Girl. *squeezes her* Man, I so cannot wait for my Cherry to get here so I can finally see if all the stuff I made for her fits. (Including a yarn wig. O_o;..)

    43. o___O Yarn is evil to me! Guhhhhhh. XD I tried making a yarn wig, it was a disaster.

But oh man, Cherries are soooo adorable. ;o; -hugs my girl-

    44. The pants look really great kayke... the vest looks nicely done too :)

from what i remember you dont use patterns... so you simply cut them up on the fabric and then sew them together... I guess it really is possible but its really great that you can make them fit nicely :)

good luck on your future works... happy sewing...

    45. If the items are falling apart, perhaps you are sewing too close to the edge of the pieces. Also, if your material is ravelling and you don't have a serger, perhaps you can zigzag over the edges before you sew the pieces together. This may help. Don't get discouraged; I love your outfits!

    46. X3 I figured out how to use patterns-- but I guess I'm not a pattern person.

I can visualize what amount I'll need and what I need to cut so I really don't need a pattern... unless it's something complicated.

I've got pants and shirts down-- I need to start working on dresses. :3

      Thanks!

I figured out why my clothes were falling apart. >: My sewing machine was making my threads weird, but I fixed the tension- and I've also started reinforcing the beginnings and ends of my sewing.

      Thanks! <3

    47. I was using the same little tiny sewing machine you are( if you haven't gotten a new one yet ) and it wasn't the best for sewing but you are much better for making clothes for dolls from that machine then I was.

      But your clothes for her are very cute and punkish. And you're improving greatly. [;

    48. Those outfits are sooo cute they make me want to throw sparkles every where. I love them!

    49. I love the clothes you've made~ They're all so awsome and adorable. xD I especially love all the pants.

    50. Wow, you make really nice clothes! Can't figure out which I like the most *Q*

    51. cute outfits!! i love the torn shirt and camo pants!!! the outfit with the rainbow spotted top and jeans is too cute as well!!!

    52. :D

      Thank you all!

      Here's some more update~~

Sorry for the crappy webcam pics... My digital camera's batteries are dead. >:

Well, here you can see a shirt I made, I tucked in the black pants into her boots, and I made her a blue wig out of those free swatches! :3

I also attempted to make a messenger bag, but it looks more like an art portfolio because it's so big on her. XD Hopefully it's the right size for my SD I'm getting. <3

    53. XD I got my fur samples in the mail today and i'm gonna try to make my Cherry a wig out of them. But it looks like you were able to just use one swatch! :O I was figuring I'd have to use two and just make her a multicolored one. Could you show a picture of her without the hat so we can see the wig? =D

    54. I used two swatches- I used the blue long pile fur and the white tipped blue fur~ But I cut the white tips off of the blue fur.

The wig is still hard to fit around her head and it looks best with a hat on to keep it from falling. :| My mom threw away my velcro for her wigs so I couldn't use that.

    55. D'oh! X| That sucks. But hey, she looks super cute in that hat, anyway. :3 And the wig looks good in it too, so who'll be the wiser?

    56. the necklace matches her style :)...

the looks nice too as is the bag.... argh im so envious... i wish i can sew again... ive never thought of making a bag before..bu... wekll... i dont think ill try anytime soon...

good luck on your future works kayke :)... hope you wont stop getting better :)

    57. The blue wig is so cute~ I love the colour. If you wrap a rubber band around her head the wig'll stay on better.
The messanger bag is so cute too~ I love the fabric you used.

    58. Ohmygosh!

I love all of the clothes...

I was pretty much drooling over the adorable ripped shirt and blue leg warmers and sweater! :]]]

    59. your works are relly cute!

    60. I think your stuff looks good. As you increase the learning process you will begin to understand clothing construction for your doll. Like everyone have suggested get the Fraycheck (that's what it's called). You will be extremely happy!
