Multiple dolls for one character?

Dec 12, 2009

    1. I have two dolls for my character Ilari, an MSD (age 12) and an SD (18). The main reason is that I wanted to have my favorite couple as dolls. I bought two (!) different SD girls that didn't work for the character before giving up and shelling her in the same mold as her daughter. So, then I had to get a smaller Ilari to go with her. ^^ Two of my Bambicrony Emilys are also the same character, Lorina at age 10 and her reincarnation Mariana at the same age.

If I was going to get any more dolls I'd probably do it again, too. XD; My gray IH Luna's character has a human version...

    2. I have three dolls of my two main characters. :sweat One set as teenagers (MSDs), one as young adults (SDs), and chibi versions (pukis.)

    3. Like many other's have said, I also have an adult and child version of one of my dolls :)

I have my Minifee Chloe as a teenage version of my Pukifee Mio :)

I have, in the past, had plans for a Minifee Miyu to be a teenage version for my Soom Ai - but I've yet to find a reason to need one XD

    4. I think your perfectly sane for having multiples of the same character. I ordered two boys myself and will be turning them both into the same character, but representing his two different personalities.

    5. I made a character of mine into a BJD, but now I want to make a Dollfie Dream version too! I always draw the character in anime style, so it makes good sense to have an anime style doll for him. But the BJD version is still super pretty~ Just more elegant and mature.

    6. I'm not sure that I have done that-- But I know Tygati does that with her doll Shaial.

    7. I don't have older and younger BJD versions of the same character, but I do have alternate heads for four of my adult characters. I have sleep heads for my SoulDoll Lune and my ElfDoll Red. Plus I have a DollZone Cherry with two heads. One has been modded to have her eyes half closed. And my k-doll boy who wears kabuki makeup all the time has two heads, kill_U 2nd and Karon, with different makeup on each one.

I want to get a fifth one too, a Ninodoll Bada with his eyes modded closed. :aheartbea

    8. I don't really have any older or younger versions of my own character. One of my dolls really resembles my SD, but I don't really look at them as the same person. I think it would be okay for someone to have two dolls for the same character if they really love that character's story.. But I don't think I would, I'd want to work on buying a doll for another character.

    9. I plan to get my Yui an MSD version of his character ten years earlier prior to his SD incarnation .u. I am also ridiculously happy that I found and MSD sculpt that resembles his so closely too!

    10. I think it would be awesome to have the same character at different points in their life! ^_^

    11. I do the opposite: more characters for a one doll )))

    12. it's not wrong, what you do with your dolls is solely up to you
I've thought of doing this too but decided against it for my dolls, I think it's cool when people do photostories that have a younger and older version of the same doll though

    13. I have plans to get four different versions of one of my characters....two are tinies, one is mini and one is large. They're all dolls that I really like, so I don't see the problem with it. Just might get a little confusing name-wise.
I really like seeing the interactions that people set up when they have a younger version and an older version of the same character, I think it's really interesting.

    14. Wellllll... Since I posted last (1 year and 2 months ago), my number of "duplicates" has, um, quadrupled. I have acquired an MSD version of another SD doll, and worse, I have two SD versions of two characters. So, um, I have THREE versions of Morgana and Gawain. For Morgana the second SD version is almost warranted (;p) because the second body I got for her has wings, so it's quite different from the first. But for Gawain I got a second body just because I love the second body and don't want to get rid of his first.

      *sigh*

    15. Me and my friend have a couple of characters who we want multiple dolls for xD (basically two, younger and older versions). Right now, I only own one if them though~ x3
So I think it's definitely alright, or even the opposite like someone mentioned. It's totally fine to do what you want with your dolls :3

    16. I have two dolls for one of my characters. They are both Dollshe Saints, but one is in pale skin and the other is in fresh skin. They have pretty much identical faceups done by the same faceup artist, because they are meant to be alternate versions of the same character. In his story, his skintone and eye color can change depending on his emotions, so I wanted two dolls to represent him. And because I love his character so much :)

    17. I posted in this thread twice before...since then it's just exploded...

I have multiple versions of a lot of my characters, mostly in SD size, Mini and then Puki. I have child versions of three of them, and one of my characters has 13 versions (though one is a floating head atm. He used to have a body and will again someday...). 15 if you count the two Dals. 17 if you're in my head. I can't promise to stop there...I kind of use him as a reason to own certain dolls -- I wanted a Narsha but had no reason to own one so I made it into another Alex. Instant keeper. One of my other dolls has three heads for expression changes (I have had them for months and am only just now trying to get face ups on them *fail*). Two of my 6 Kara Klums started out as "extra" heads...but no way can I get this other doll bodies to go with all his heads. A, I don't want too and B, his body is discontinued and too expensive *kicks him* so he just gets extra heads.

The puki and mini versions came about the same way...I wanted a Puki, it became Alex, he got lonely so I got a few more...and they sorta blew up into a whole "cast". I got a Doll Chateau Colin (Alex again) who also got lonely, so somehow this year in between trades and body swaps, I ended up with almost the same cast as Minis. Minus a few I either will or won't end up getting...funds, space, luck and interest factor in to whether or not I end up with some dolls.

It's fun to have different sizes. I get bored easily, and sometimes I get obsessed with different sizes. And I like recreating certain characters. Now if only I could get around to photographing them all....

    18. So I last posted to this thread way back at the start with one set of dolls as the same character (adult and child version)... just last month, I added two more, though this time they're just minis/chibis of the adults, not child versions. I'm planning to set up basically the same family in both a mini/MSD size and a tiny/YO size, so the number of duplicates I have is going to absolutely skyrocket! I'm loving having multiples, too, each version gives me something different and fun to do that the other doesn't.

    19. I haven't thought of that but it sounds a really good idea once I get more into the hobby I will definately try this :)

    20. This is interesting, and I liked the topic because at some point I plan on getting a Timelord. (Not /that/ timelord--but his (a) daughter. XD) And I've thought about it. With a base of 13 different looks, it'd be so COOL to do that in doll form--but also very very expensive. x.x If you have the time and space for it (no pun intended), I think it'd be cool. But I'd probably only stick to incarnations of my Timelord that I played.

    21. it is very normal, many of my friends have done that... and they are continue doing that. well money is really a problem, especailly for the hot dolls.

    22. I do not see anything wrong with it at all! I am not sure I would do it myself, however, simply because I want too many dolls for too many characters already! I would rather have more individual characters than multiples of one.

The idea of having a full size and a chibi is too cute, though.

    23. It isn't weird at all and I'm actually planning on this for one of my dolls.

Rene, as a YOSD, looks like a six-year-old and fits in well with her room box but is completely out-of-scale with the doll that is supposed to be her father (who is 70cm!) so they cannot interact. I'm planning on getting a very young looking SD to represent her as an older child/tween so that she won't look out of place in photos with him and she'll be the correct age for some serious character-related things.

There are lots of reasons for people doing this, but for me scaling is the primary issue.

    24. I have a plan for this~ I'm going to get my character Zach (Sam's little brother) as a YoSD and a smaller MSD. My friend Ven also plans on getting the child and older versions of their Iago.

    25. I think that's really cool... If I could afford it, I think I would.. ^^
Instead...my doll right now is suffering from multiple split personality... >.<
Hoping to decide on his character soon~

    26. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, reshelling a doll and keeping the old one too. I still have pretty mixed feelings about it.

    27. I am all about twin set! But I really like the twins that work as one entity. Like the ones in The Shining, maybe.
I don't think there's anything wrong with having two dolls representing the same character at all. This hobby is completely personal and everyone does it differently. Anyone who says it's not ok isn't being a good sport and should probably realise that there's more than one way to go about owning BJDs. I'd personally love to have multiple dolls of the same character. And actually, I do! Just not in BJDs. I collect them for their slight differences. ;)

    28. If u are crazy for that then so am I! I have a few characters that I will have multiple dolls for. Such as my girl takaira. I'm planning on having one doll for when she is a teenager and another for when she is in her twenties. My hitomi is another. She has three different forms: a human, a dragon, and a skeletal. So I will end up with three different dolls just for her. The expense makes me cringe but its worth it! :XD:

    29. If I had the money, I would totally have a SD doll of my MSD boys and vice-versa. I think the idea is cute^^

    30. One of my characters has a great deal of background before she gets lots of scars, and a great deal of story after. So eventually I would like to have two dolls for her, one with scars and one without.

    31. Iโ€˜ve dreaming about this for a long time......still saving

    32. I think it's perfectly fine. I mean it's your hobby, you do what you like. I have a doll right now that I'd like to downsize from SD to MSD, but I don't really want to sell my SD so she will become the future version of my MSD girl.

    33. I do this, too :) I have one character who has an older and a younger version, and one character who I reshelled, but I kept the old doll because it's still a gorgeous doll, it's just that it's been 8 years since I bought him and there are now dolls available that fit his character much better. I don't see anything wrong with it, enjoy the hobby in the way you like best ^_^

    34. I never thought of getting the same character in two dolls, thought of it to be a waste.
I'm planing that just right now. Well, they are two different versions of the same character, out of two different universes that mereged into my own world^^.
Loki the nores god will come home soon, hopefully. (~70cm)
Loki the cursed avengers/thor/fantasy/mytologie hybrid with to many personalities to count is my little CostomHouse/Fairyland Hybrid (~29cm)
So yeah, no waste at all.

    35. I have two dolls in multiple versions, my Chicline cat has an SD version so she can interact with my SD sized dolls in that form, and I will be making a slightly smaller, slightly more human version of my Chiron Centaur with my Soom Epidos head on a Resinsoul Mu body.
It's quite hard for the huge bulky centaur to interact with the other dolls and even harder to find good spaces for pictures with them since he is so massive, but as a 60cm-ish boy with hooves he will fit in much better with the other guys.

    36. I think it's fun. Sometimes I think about eventually getting Kali a YoSD to be a cute little chibi version of her. It wouldn't really bother me, since to me the character is just that, a character and not the doll itself, so there could be multiple representations of them.

    37. I think it is fine if that is what you prefer- honestly, I wouldn't! I have so many characters to shell that I don't have enough space nor money to shell one character in multiple dolls.

    38. I really like the thought of having an MSD and a tiny for the same character.
Good for a candid story :3

    39. I have a character in two dolls! He's a 14 year old in one doll and 25 or so in the other. The problem is he is a twin so if I wanted to be accurate I'd have to get both twins in both ages... that probably won't happen.
It's funny because I only thought of doing this after having both head sculpts at home because I simply liked both. But then I started seeing how they kinda look really similar! If I ever win the lottery I'd get both twins in all ages and as YoSD as well!

    40. I've seen a lot o people who have more than one doll for a character, for example, @crackupmadness on IG has some characters who can turn into dragons, and so they have a dragon doll and a human doll. I've also seen many people who have kid versions of their adults characters, so they'll have, like, an SD and a YoSD for the same character. I kinda like this idea :P

    41. I actually really like the idea of having different versions of the same doll! For example, my first doll's character, Alice, grew up one hell of a ton since I first got her, and her "doll form" is no longer up to date with the oc- but I just love her so much, so somewhere in the future I'm going to get her (and her brother) a grown-up sd version.

    42. I have 3 versions of my doll Cameron- baby, child and adult. His mother also has a young and middle aged version that I used in a photo story. I think it can be fun to have multiple sculpts that represent the same character.

    43. I think of it like as if you have different figures of the same anime character.. And that's considered normal in the anime figure world. :dance You must adore your bjd character!

    44. I've been sincerely considering getting SD 'versions' of my MSD dolls' characters. I've been thinking about it for a few years now and I think I'm pretty close to finally taking the leap on it for at least one of them and ordering it from the company for my next doll.

    45. I'm planning on doing this, actually! I have a set of 'twins' in tiny form and I am looking for the perfect set of SDs for them as adults. The problem is finding sculpts that look enough alike but also fit my picky criteria.

    46. I didn't tried and never saw other people doing that... but sounds like interesting idea. Only if my wallet allowed them...

    47. I've got 2. Planning on a 3rd. All children plus adults.

    48. Oh whew, I thought I was the only one thinking of getting two heads for the same doll! I thought it'd be nice to have different face up styles on the two heads because I like both styles ^^

    49. I am planning on buying MSD next year to make a child version of one of the doll I'm waiting for >< My character looks kinda different as a child and aaaa I want both big him and small him///

    50. It seems like a perfectly fine thing to me. I don't know why anyone would find that to be wrong, exactly? ^^; I'm actually considering finding another doll somewhere along the line to represent Serenade's human transformation, personally! It's really all up to you and what you want to do! ^_^

    51. I just thought of this today!I kinda want to do that wit one of my characters, but I`m still thinking if I should spent that much money on a character, or use it to do one of my other characters, if that makes any sense.

    52. For me it's totally fine. I have 2 favorites characters and it's impossible to have just one doll for them, so I have 3 differents kind of dolls for both

    53. I think of my dolls as individual characters. Unless the same character had, say, an alter ego or a version that looked really different, I don't think I would get more than one doll to represent the same character. Thus far, each of my dolls is their own character. But if I saw a sculpt that I loved that had a human version and a fantasy version, I might be interested in buying both and making them the same character. :)

    54. I would not be opposed to getting the same character in different dolls for reasons, such as alternate timeline, mirror image, doppelganger, and/or aging. In fact, /technically/ my Aria and Andrew are ... "the same character"--and then they weren't... the Andrew mold character started as a doppelganger just a gender bend but then became his own person through plot. xD

A /really/ good example of same character, multiple dolls would be if you wanted to do all 12/13 Doctors from Doctor Who--or any of the timelords.

    55. He He i have that too
Lets say that your character has the ability to swap bodies at will :P
