Just For Fun Mods: Ask us anything!

Aug 5, 2014

    1. Please make this happen! That sounds amazing!

I have never actually experienced heavy snow. .____________.

    2. I had to think about this one for a while... I like eleniel's answer (I know exactly what that taste it), but I'd go with any red tea. Being lactose intolerant means I pretty much never get ice cream evereverever but green tea ice cream has never made me sick. I'd hope the same for red tea ice cream.

Our apartment is half-sunk into the ground and we have a 5' stairway to go up to our 'backyard'. Around February, we did not have stairs -- just a 5' deep snowdrift. It was AWESOME.

    3. It's not new but I really wish I could get a couple of the flavors of ice cream they have in Japan over here: Kuro goma (black sesame), Hojicha (tea), and Beni imo (purple sweet potato).

    4. Be it stringing, face-ups, sewing, crafting... what's the one part of this hobby that makes you shudder?

    5. Within the realm of actual doll ownership and not the external aspects of the hobby, there is little to give me pause.
I find changing my doll's clothing somewhat irritating and I procrastinate for months and months until I am badgered into doing so.
I suck at setting eyes. I have a few that I can manage, but most of the time I poke at them for thirty minutes, the doll is still wall-eyed, and I hand the head to idrisfynn.

    6. Two things actually.

Teardowns of my own sets at doll meets are the slight lesser of the evils. I have a bit of a reputation for going above and beyond when it comes to scenes and backdrops -- I think I mentioned my furniture/prop hoarding earlier in this thread -- and I've gone so far as to sprinkle seed beads all over one of my sets in addition to 2cm tall voodoo dolls. It takes me nearly an hour to set everything up for a 4 hour meet, so when the last hour rolls around I end up staring at it in despair and wondering why I do that to myself ... only to do it again later.

And the worst one: wig shopping. I hate wig shopping. I almost always end up defaulting to Jpopdolls or Monique wigs out of sheer laziness. I'm spoiled on one particular company's fur/mohair wigs, tibetan is a gamble and I don't really like fibre wigs. Kinda narrows my options.

    7. YES! ... wow, that would be a great ice cream flavor! :) And I like your description of it much more than my own, which is usually something like "it smells like winter out here."

    8. I do it whenever needed, but stringing gives me the heebie-jeebies.

I once strung a doll, not a modern BJD though, and snapped the veneers off my two front teeth, when the elastic gave way and sproing! My jaw snapped, probably outta surprise more than anything else. Replacing the veneers cost more than the doll...

Last time I did a BJD. I was puling and having a hard time with it having to repeatedly pull and get the tension right when I noticed blood on the elastic..... Anyways, I basically made a pressure wound on my index finger of my left hand (-yep, I'm a leftie). I was pulling so hard that the my skin basically split open from the pressure -TMI, probably.... but a good warning of what you can do to yourself stringing a doll. Hemostats are your friends, folks....

    9. Azuki bean ice cream would be awesome.

Adding gloss to a faceup. I've ruined so many faceups by messing that up.

    10. I don't know that there are many that don't exist. Local ice cream place Humphry Slocombe has made pretty much any crazy thing I can think of. The link is just to their current line-up. I want to try the Peanut Butter Curry, the Sweet Summer Corn, and the Szechuan Strawberry sorbet.

The only thing that really gets me is when you are doing a face-up, and you think you have the head nicely coated... but halfway through the face-up ( when you are happy with your progress), something happens to the coating. Maybe you didn't clean it enough before sealing it, or the resin was a bit funky in that spot, or it's a little too humid. And you get a bubble under the sealant at the mouth corner or edge of the eye and you can't save it and end up having to wipe it and start over. I do a full Kermit arm flail for that. I usually can't even look at that head for weeks after I get so mad.

    11. It exists. That one has even made it over here from Asia. I've found it at random Chinese restaurants and Chinatowns -yum...

But I haven't found any here. I want it at my local market so I can make myself oh, so sick from it <3

    13. Oh, I would be the absolute worst at ice cream flavour creation. It would probably be something like Ben & Jerry's Half Baked (chocolate & vanilla ice cream with brownie and chocolate chip cookie dough chunks) with caramel swirls, Oreos, M&Ms, chocolate-covered almonds... Anything chocolatey and sugary.

When I was in college, the dorm food court had an ice cream station and I always lumped everything together in a bowl. D: Ice cream with all the things.

I have no appreciable skills, so I'm not too hard to frighten, but I'd say big modifications sound the most intimidating. I don't see myself taking on any modding projects any time soon!

    14. Something with cake, brownies, and cookie dough and caramel :)!

      Faceups for sure. :-x

    15. I have one of each. Shishi is a beautiful orange fluffball kitty adopted from the SPCA, and Jasper is a german shepherd mix that showed up on our back porch one day.

I would love to have a bunny someday though.

Peppermint strawberry swirl. Peppermint icecream with strawberry sauce is my favourite combination, so it would be nice to have it all together from the start.

Spraying MSC. And I've resolved not to ever do it anymore and work out how to use liquitex sealant with my airbrush as some DoA members have suggested. Even if I wear a mask until the room airs out, I worry that there might be enough left in the air to harm my pets.

I also have an aversion to doll wigs that aren't on a doll. I feel like I should poke one with a stick first before picking it up. I always store them in wig nets because that makes it less icky somehow.

    16. If you could have any company of choice release any fantasy creature doll of your choice, which company would sculpt it and what kind of creature would it be?

    17. I happen to love the little winged demon cats put out by Aileen doll, I just don't want to buy the larger anthro sold with it. I would also like a Hujoo resin cat Freya so she'd be on-topic and I could post her here.

    18. Not sure which company.. I'd probably prefer one of the more obscure ones, but I'd love a tiny (lati white/puki size) kappa. Anything bigger than lati yellow/pukifee would be to big and one super tiny would empty my wallet faster than my mini girl buying a new fall wardrobe..

    19. I want a BJD griffin. I don't know who could make it however.

    20. Seconding the griffin! Specifically a Minoan griffin, because they are, as far as griffins go, exceedingly cute. I think Cuarto would do an awesome job of engineering such a critter.

In a less cute direction, I would love to see a more stylized archaic Greek griffin of the sort usually found case in bronze sculpted by Doll Chateau.

    21. I'm actually having a really hard time with this one. I know of a lot of fantasy creatures, but I'm not sure which one I'd like to have in doll form, if any, especially since a lot of them change from culture to culture.

I'm going to have to go with a Valravn and I'd mash Spiritdoll's sculptors with Fairyland's engineering.

    22. Ah, you're the one who has "Minoan archeaology' as an interest in their profile, I knew I'd seen it somewhere! I studied the Mycenaeans and Minoans and had a chance to go field walking and visit a lot of amazing archaeological sites but I was sad that we never made it to Crete! Maybe one day.

Umm, to keep this on topic, mods - what do you think is great about the place where you live? I'm asking this because I like to travel and I've lived in Europe, Asia and now the US, so I'm always wondering where to go next!

    23. YAY! I spent a summer studying with Nanno Marinatos and got to see every palace on Crete, as well as a ton of mainland sites. It's definitely worth a visit! I love Crete! It kind of feels like home to me geologically too, since the landscape is very similar to Southern California.

San Francisco is my home now, and I love everything about it. It manages to feel more European, thanks to the steep hills and ornate Victorian architecture. We've got a diverse population, an intense local food scene, gorgeous wild landscapes less than an hour away, and a generally casual vibe. The only downside is that all of this makes it highly desirable so it can be shockingly expensive, and if you are expecting stereotypical sunny California weather you'll be disappointed. But if you're used to NYC the prices won't be too painful and the cool summers might be a relief.

    24. Oh cool, you've definitely made me want to go back, I studied classical studies for five years but it was a long time ago. The Mycenaeans were the first thing we studied so I have a real soft spot for them, but most of my courses were more interested in later periods and the only actual archaeological work I did was for a few weeks on a site in Rome. Looking back I wish I'd found courses that were more interested in archaic Greece because that's what I was really into!

I have a feeling I would prefer to live in San Francisco and it's something we're keeping in mind for the future! I hate the hot weather, it's making miss London's clouds more than I thought possible :-)

    25. If you miss London then you'll definitely like Karl (our fog bank).

    26. Wow! That video is beautiful, thanks :-)

    27. If one of your dolls was allowed to come to life for a day, which one would it be, and what would you do with them?

    28. I would be torn between Kai (AR Kai) since we have the most history together I think meeting him "in person' would be fascinating, and my Hijikata Toshizo, Jan, since he is a character of mine I've been writing about for years. I'd like to go on a date with him.

    29. Gosh, that's another good one. It would probably be Lilofee and I'd end up taking her exploring all day. She is Peter Pan meets Bilbo Baggins, so she's quite the wanderer. Woods, nature, parks and sightseeing would be her thing.

Well, I love Kansas City for the fact it's Kansas City. I've had some explorations of the world (Germany [Berlin, Marburg, Koeln, Frankfurt, Potsdam], Grand Turk, the Bahamas, Oklahoma, California, Indiana, Iowa; I'm sue I'm missing some. Anyway, it's still one of my top three places in the world. It has plenty diversity, lots of small businesses, big businesses, a flourishing art district, historic sites, ethnic festivals. Walt Disney actually attended the Kansas City Art Institute, which accepts all sorts of art and craftwork in the way of portfolios -- a prospect student can even submit things they've made in Second Life! KC has even been called 'Paris of the Midwest'.

As with all cities, it has its oddities and problems, but there's no where in the USA I'd rather live. Maybe Portland, but I haven't been there -- yet.

    30. I'm more of a robot/mecha type than a fantasy creature type. I'd love to see Dollshe tackle a cyborg style boy. But I have really liked the cyclops made by Duke Meow and Aileen Doll.

I am also in San Francisco, and St James has covered some good highlights. I grew up in Santa Barbara CA which is a beautiful place, but there isn't a lot to do there. After living in LA for a while, I realized I was sort of starved for a nice looking city. There are things I like about LA (like wearing a t-shirt w/o a jacket out at night, the art scene, and being able to discuss movies with almost anyone). But SF is a nice looking city, over every hill a new neighborhood and a new vista. Yes, the food is great. It is wonderful to be able to walk just about everywhere. And really, the people are friendly, busy working long hours and/or two jobs to pay the rent, but friendly. I also like the SF relaxed street style.

If the doll was still a little doll, I'd go with my Souloid Iraki Dalziel or my Batchix Mini Machina Ute. I would finally have my own little machine person~
If the doll were to turn into a life sized person... probably my Musedoll ReChe Max, he'd be sour and sassy and fun. I'd want to take him shopping and I'd make him try on everything.

    31. It's kind of boring and harshly pragmatic, but I'd pick my Feeple70 Ashley girl Anastasia since she's a healer and she could fix all of my medical problems for free. But then we could go hang out with idrisfynn and Max since she and Max are BFFs.

    32. To Everyone; I am considering coming to Dollism for the public day since I found out too late to register for the whole event. I live a long way from Buffalo and have never been to a bjd show. Would this be great for me to do?

    33. I'm going to say yes, because all of the BJD cons I've been to have been immense fun and because I'll be there. :) Hanging out with several hundred other people who just want to talk about dolls? Yes, please! Shopping for doll stuff in person where you can try it on, oh very much yes please!

    34. Most of mine are divas and would drive me absolutely nuts if they were real people, so I'd have to go with Kei (MSD F-29) and I'd make him teach me all the tricks he can do on his skateboard

    35. I would definitely go. Never been to a Dollism event but I've been to other non-BJD doll conventions: 2 UFDC (United Federation of Doll Clubs Regionals). As far as BJDs go: NYC Dolpa 2 and 2 of the Kyoto Dolpas while in Japan. Never regretted going to any. You're going to get to meet people who don't think you're crazy because you're carrying around a doll. You're going to see dolls you've never seen in person (WARNING! this might increase your want list significantly).

I am going for the weekend assuming I can get my volunteer/time off work schedule worked out. Hope to see you there.

    36. This one had me really stumped, if only because there are so many fantasy creatures I would love to see in doll form. Fortunately, a lot of doll companies have released dolls that could be used for a lot of humanoid fantasy beings... So maybe more purely animal types, like a hippocampus. Ooh, or a tarasque!

Or if we're open to recent fictional creations, I would give my left arm for a BJD Skeksis! I have no idea which company would best sculpt it, but I'm sure Souldoll could do justice to a costume. :3

Er...low cost of living? XD I have nothing incredibly favourable to say about where I live.

Hrm, not many of them would be that trustworthy. I think I'm content that they're all dolls!

If the travel's not too much of a problem for you, I think it sounds like a great idea! I only wish I could have made it - I'm very envious of everyone who will have the chance!

    37. ARE YOU SERIOUS??? I'd love to have one...and the gelfings too. I know we did those once but they weren't perfect... Lord, there goes my wallet committing suicide! LOL

    38. If only! Honestly, a Skeksis would be near the top of the list of things I'd love to see happen. :D

I've seen the Gelflings! I was delighted to see that people gave it a try.

    39. I wish they had flatten the nose and all...we had to make them move the ears...they were almost Shrek like!

    40. Uhm, im a little confuzzled. when exactly does the DOA 10th Anniversary Event end to date?
      :)

    41. Tanebi. We'd play, and I would buy more alpacas for him to love. And I'd tie a bow on the end of his cute tail <3

I think it'd be a fabulous thing to do. Think of all the dolls you will get to see, and the people you can meet.

    42. Hi Mods! Will the size-specific wig marketplace will be taken into use soon? :D

I'm also wondering if we can expect more frequent updates on the main page? It hasn't been updated in ages!

    43. This is a a special thread to ask us personal or fun questions, things unrelated to the forum or even the hobby. :sweat

As I sure you could guess, running the Anniversary takes up pretty much all of our spare time. Any planned forum changes will likely not happen until after Dollism US is over and all of us are home, settled and ready to move forward. I can only say, hopefully we will see the changes and more updates on our home page before the year's end.

If anyone has questions about the forum or the Anniversary, you can always use our Ask the Mods subforum. It is open all year and pretty much runs like this thread, only it's private, so the threads are only viewable to the staff and not the whole forum. ;)

    44. Ah! I didn't realise it was for personal questions only. :sweat Thanks for answering, I understand you guys must all be horribly busy! Hopefully you'll have a great time at Dollism! :)

    45. Where did you go to school and what did you study? If money were no object, what would you study now, just for the pleasure of learning?

    46. I went to school in my hometown of Santa Barbara and I spent four years getting a two year degree. :sweat I was working three jobs and then I got distracted from my AA in oil painting and wandered into printmaking and geology. And then I got really distracted and studied archaeology in Athens. >.>

If money was no object I'd go study the linguistics of the Ancient Near East during the Bronze Age, paleoclimatology, and physics. Lots of physics. I totally ignored the hard sciences after basic algebra and biology and now I'm regretting it. I'd love to learn more about particle physics and astrophysics. I've been taking advantage of the free massive open online courses I can find on astrophysics, because I can afford it and I can study during my commute.
Being a full time student of anything would be a dream come true, though. I've never had that luxury.

    47. How big of an impact do you feel being a moderator on the Den of Angels website has had on your daily lives?

    48. I started college here in SLC, Utah. But I had to quit as my husband became ill. I was studying photography. If I could afford to go back full time, I'd study photography and welding. :)

I tended to lurk around DOA quite a lot anyway, so time-wise it's not been a big impact. But having to patrol the Marketplace more has had an impact on my wallet, however.

    49. I don't really even know how to calculate that anymore.
It means I never get a day off from the internet.
It means I currently have 42,336 emails in my Inbox.
It means I know more dramatic tales of personal woe about people I've never met than I do about all the people I've ever known in real life.
It also means that I am aware of and I am thankful for the existence of a few thousand more people than I would have been had I not been a moderator. :aheartbea

    50. I went to Colorado State University, where I got a BS in Microbiology and my DVM degree. I did the BS in 3 years, so I kind of sped through and didn't get to take a lot of electives, beyond what was needed for credit requirements. If I could go back, I'd love to take courses in photography, art... Oh, and CSU had a horseback riding course that I desperately wanted to take, if I'd had the time!

Like Cathy, I already spent a lot of time on DoA before becoming a mod, but it's certainly changed how that time is spent! No more lazy browsing and lurking, there's always something to do! Even when I've only got a few moments to spare, I find I'm always checking in.

    51. Utah and Tokyo
I'm still in school and I'm studying Japanese (but I studied a huge random selection of other things already as well). I get to graduate this winter and then I'm off to law school!

      ...what daily life?

    52. Ok, what's your favorite food?

    53. Strawberries, or Indian curry

    54. After studying for my AA in art at Santa Barbara City college, I moved to LA to attend FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising). I simply could not support myself and go to school full time so I didn't finish my course. After that I started working and now I've been a retail buyer for the last 10 years. If money were no object I'd go study fashion design, I would work up my skill ladder and the apprentice someplace where I could hone my skills and atelier techniques. I am much better at "studying" when I can do things and interact with them.

I have been on staff since 2006, I don't even know how to add up all the time I have spent working on the forum. As time has passed I've gained greater and greater responsibility. Just the other day I spent one evening from 9PM until 2AM writing emails to companies about contest winners, conveying information from them back to contest winners, and now I am setting up advertising spaces. There are days off from my job that I will spend the whole day chasing down issues and cleaning things instead of going out and enjoying the day. And when I come home from work, I sort of go right back to work. It is like a second job that I don't get paid for, but that I do it because I want DoA to exist.

Right now I'm into fresh made blueberry corn or fig apricot scones, kouign amann, macaron, anmitsu, lovely dessert things

    55. Nabe, or Japanese hot pot cooking. I haven't had it since I left Japan.

Well, I no longer hear crickets chirping in my inbox. It's something I have to remember to do every day, even if I'm busy. I must check in on DOA and see if there is anything I need to deal with or contribute to. I also have to pay a lot more attention to the nuances of forum rules and guidelines as well as how simple things work like how the multi-quote feature works or how to attach a feedback thread to one's profile so I can explain it to members when they get confused. It does eat into my free time a bit.

I went to Bard College to study Art History, because no one ever told me it wasn't a valid career path and then onto FIT in NYC to study Museum Studies again 'cause no one told me there weren't no jobs.... If money was no object I would go back to school and study Japanese to become a translator.

    56. It's a tie between Indian curry and sushi.

    57. T__T Oh man... Too many favorites...
Sushi, steak and asparagus, Thai coconut curry, sunny-side up eggs and toast, I could probably keep adding more, lol. :P

    58. You're all making me hungry! LOL! How many of you are coming to Dollism? If not, why not? If it's personal, you can say that.

    59. All of the foods? >> Can I pick all of them? Is that fair?

I really like food, and I'm not too picky. If I had to narrow it down, I'd say shrimp fried rice, saag chicken, sushi, and turtle cheesecake. Food. :D

I'll be at a conference for work that weekend, so I'm going to miss out. I just hope there's another chance next year, so I can plan better!

    60. Unfortunately, I just couldn't afford it this year.
