Just For Fun Mods: Ask us anything!

Aug 5, 2014

1.
Welcome to 'Mods - Ask Us Anything'!

We did this last year and got a lot of great questions. We've since added some new staff members, so we thought we'd try this again.

Did you ever want to know a bit more about the mods? How long have they been in the hobby? What is their typical day like on the forum? What do they like most about being a mod? What is their day job? Well, you've come to the right place! In this thread, you'll be able to interact with the mods in a fun, casual and off-topic setting!

Here are some ground rules to keep this event fun and enjoyable for everyone:

• One question per post (to keep things organized and easy to read)
• Questions can be addressed to a specific moderator or to the Mod Team in general (Inactive moderators may not be able to answer your questions)
• Keep the topics light-hearted and fun – this is not the place to debate forum rules
• Have fun!
Due to the sensitive nature of the job, moderators may not answer some questions. If your question falls under this category, it will be removed from the thread with appropriate explanation. As always, if you have an issue that requires personal attention, please post in Ask the Moderators for assistance.

2. To all; What is your favorite sculpt (can be head/body/or full doll) that came out this year? Or are you still waiting for something to amaze you?

3. DC Barbara, Freakstyle Salome and Heartstrung Ruse.

4. I am happy to say I've been amazed by a lot of releases this year (although my bank account is much less happy about that) but I think my favourite has to be the Luts KDF Pegasus body!

5. Did 5th Motif Venitu come out this year? That doll is a total show stopper, but that might have been last year. There were a lot of dolls I coveted last year. :sweat

This year I think that the Popovy Sisters new [OMG finally on topic for Den of Angels falls down with happiness] resin girls with glass eyes are the ones that have captivated me. Especially Peevit. I have also fallen hard for the new SoulDoll Tarot minis, just about anything from Withdoll, and the DollChateau minis. Ironic, since I don't collect minis, but I'm broke anyway so it's not actually too painful.

Still hoping that la Legende de Temps will release Ahaz or Ludwig this year, but I stopped holding my breath a long time ago.

6. I'm still waiting for something amazing to appear tbh. I'm getting pickier over time.

7. Doll Chateau has really gotten my attention this year. So I'd have to pick either DC Kevin or Isabel. Those wings are amazing.

8. In one word: Many ... Doll Chateau, Black Cherry Doll, Freak Style, Demiurge dolls, Loongsoul Doll, LLT, recently introduced Aimerai dolls ...

Not from this year, but one day I'd like to own TriffonyArtwork's Sphinx, BJTales' Mouse, and something from Akhmel.
In addition, I really really really would like to see a 70cm female athletic body (big plus if it has a jointed hands option as well).

1.1. still counts as this year.

9. Luts definitely got my attention with their new Satyr and Satyresses. If I didn't have other obligations, I'd have at least three!

10. Well, the new Volks standards for starters, since I bought Chiyo. Also will second Freakstyle's Salome. It's a unique and less often seen bodytype the artist made look beautiful.

11. Okay, I'll ask you all the opposite question: in the spirit of anniversary nostalgia, what discontinued/defunct sculpt or company do you love most?

12. For a company, it would be Domuya, they were quite creative.
For a sculpt, I'd like to see Nabarro's and White Luster's heads being released again.

13. Hi mods! What is your #1 hobby outside of dolls? :)

14. Sculpt: Happydoll Ein
Company: Notdoll

I don't have a single #1 hobby besides dolls. Most of my hobbies fall into the general arts/crafts category: sewing, sketching, embroidery, hoarding craft supplies, etc. Besides dolls, I collect art/design books, fragrant candles and items from Ladurée.

(This would also be a fun topic for Brigadoon!)

15. skateboarding or video games

16. I would love to see the return of Hyper Maniac or Dollti. I'd also live to see DollShe rework his Afghan girls.

In terms of time spent, my number one hobby is DoA moderation (which often has very little to do with dolls), but if that doesn't count then it's making jewelry (mostly for dolls), and if that doesn't count then it's taking Massive Open Online Courses about astronomy with a focus on our Solar System and the study of exoplanets.

17. Notdoll, or volks Ian. I still get sad over both.

18. Tough one... I'd have to say the old Customhouse. Never did get the larger sculpts: Chowon, Gene Jun,... that I liked.

This ties into dolls, but sewing! is definitely #1. I'm also a writer if you want something not related to dolls directly.

19. Gosh, that's a good one... I'll have to go with Iplehouse Mars. I'm lucky enough to own one of the last heads made!

I work at the local Renaissance festival, which utilises a lot of other hobbies (sewing, interactive theatre, history, stage fighting, folk music and dancing, beer-chugging...).

20. If money wasn't an issue, is there a doll or doll related accessory you'd snap up without a second thought??

21. If money were no object, I'd have floor to ceiling glass-fronted cabinets built into half the walls of my apartment. Maybe all of the walls.

22. Yes, but not a modern BJD. I'd buy a Rabery and Delphieu french bisque doll. 2nd choice would be an Enchanted doll.

Ditto on the glass-fronted cabinets to hold my collection all around my place...:)

23. Who of you is the oldest on the forum? who is actually the oldest age wise? who do you think is the wisest?

24. All of the doll furniture and all of the urethane eyes (and a big house to display it all). I already have two medium boxes stuffed tetris-style with furniture and at least 5 shelves displaying what's not in boxes scattered around the house. :sweat Doll furniture is easier to find in thrift stores than urethane eyes though.

25. I'm not sure. It's not that I have a lot of money (far from it!) but the hurdles to acquisition are things like long waitlists, lack of space, limited availability, or just wanting things that don't exist.

I don't know who is oldest; we do have a range of ages. The wisest DoA staff members are probably the ones who've retired.

You're thinking small. If money really were no object, my Antarctic chateau would have a room for each doll, decorated in its style, with an attendant to help control light throughout the day to prevent yellowing. This would be important, since it the sun shines for several months at a time there.

26. Wisest, indeed. I think I'm in the upper mid-range at 41?

Hmm, well if I were to truly go all out on doll display ideas, I'd snap up that 1904 replica of the Petit Trianon that has been languishing empty in our neighborhood. The price has been greatly reduced and it's only 18 million now! Best doll meet location in the city for sure..

27. NariPon Toadstool. I totally regret not getting her.

Video games!

Wow, there are so many dolls and things on the want list. But I think some good furniture would top the list. (I tend to think small)

I've only been on the forum for 7 years. But I think I am one of the oldest of the mods at 50. Wisest? Not me!

28. Did Doll Chateau Elizabeth come out this year? If so, then I'd say she's the doll that amazed me the most!

Custom House. There are a few classic sculpts I'd love to get still.

Aviation! I love watching planes, learning about new advances and the physics of flight.

At this point, I need doll storage space. So, if money wasn't an object, I'd buy gorgeous glass cabinets to display all my BJD lovelies!

Agree with Dezarii on the wisest! I'm not certain who has been on the forum the longest. I joined on the first day registration opened, so I'm likely one of them.

29. I keep seeing lots of re-releases! :3 But nothing really seems to have jumped out at me!

So many options! >_< Right now, I guess Elfdoll K?

Videogames! :D Oh and making soap. Oh and cooking. And gardening! XD

A Soom Romantic Picro with all fishy parts, another centaur body so I could dye it to match. ^_^ Oh and a purple Soom Smoky body. Oh, or accessories? An airbrush kit. And more shelves! :)

:3 I've never paid attention to anyone's ages... But also not me on the wisest! My family tells me I can be naive still, at 27 even!

30. Same here. I was a member of DOA when it was a Yahoo group. the forum as it now is came into existence a couple months later.

31. Lyrajean, going by member number (46), I believe you have been on the forum longest out of all the staff.

I didn't sign up right away; I was planning on simply posting as 'guest' forever. ^^; Apparently I changed my mind a few days later.

32. I would invest in finding a way to slow or stop yellowing, after which I provide this technology to the doll companies and would pay them to replace all my current dolls in the new non-yellowing resin (even the limiteds)

I was also part of the yahoo group but I took my time registering on DoA (between Japan and posting as a guest I didn't see any need). I think I know who is the oldest as far as actual age but I'm not saying who since it's not me! And I know I'm not the wisest

33. I was quite sad about some of the DollZone sculpts that have been discontinued - especially Anson, Moment, and Una. I agree with a lot of the other answers, too - particularly Domuya! Sadly, they were gone before I joined the hobby.

Do pets count as a hobby? X3 If so, they're definitely my #1! Otherwise, I don't think there's any one specific thing - I like lazy-time activities like reading, video games, and watching TV.

All the dolls. All the dolls.

Otherwise, I'd love to have a proper display area for my collection. Dioramas, little personalized rooms or settings for each of them, studio lighting for photography.

I'm not any of those things - I do believe I'm the one who joined the forum most recently, though. (I suspect Dezarii is onto something with the answer for that last one. X3 )

34. I'm quite partial to Iplehouse sculpts, but this year their limited Eden (http://iplehouse.com/home/shop/item.php?it_id=1603079030&nhn1=en) went high up my favorite list. I'm definitely waiting for new larger doll sculpts from Fairyland. But I'm always looking forward to what Iplehouse puts out :)!

The original Souldoll Kids, that were released around 2005/2006. I own a Souldoll Tiffee girl from the original release and she is still in my collection. Not only was she my first doll, but there is something really special about her sculpt. All the dolls from that line were so unique and had such character in their own way.

Lolita fashion and sportsball of all kinds haha. Specifically NHL and MLB :)

I would go for all the limited Iplehouse EID and SID men and their full sets :)!

35. User Numbers? How do I find out what mine is? :?

What do each of you do as a profession/job?

Ryu

36. Heh. You are citizen #26432. Click on anyone's profile link and it will be in the url of their profile page. Ooooh!

I pay my rent by working as a buyer for an independent retailer. It's an old style variety store with tons of different merchandise classes, but I am responsible for maintaining the inventory for hardware, power tools, hand tools, locks, plumbing, electrical, lighting, paint, adhesives, fasteners, lumber, window glazing...and some other stuff. It can be interesting when there are new technologies to learn and introduce, and it can be tedious when I have to analyze the individual profit margins on 6000 line items of screws. Fortunately, my team of assistants is pretty low key and the local customer base is fun.

37. I'm a student, so I officially starve while I am preparing for the LSAT and law school..which means more starving for a few years

38. I am tech support for a POD (print on demand) printing company (I help people make books).

39. To any/all: what's your favorite thing about DOA? :)

40. Currently I'm a merchandiser for a large retail chain of home improvement stores.

The information available here beats anything on BJD as a resource.

People forget that 10 years ago when I started in this hobby how hard it was to find out anything about anything. Now most BJD companies/artists have figured out that they have a huge market in the Western English speaking world. Back then you sent your money away to a company and 2 months later no doll and cryptic emails from someone whose native language is Korean or Japanese and you wondered if you were just tossing $$$ into a pit and getting ripped off. Or better still the company didn't deal direct with anyone outside Asia and you had to hunt down a reliable 3rd party or buying service to get you what you wanted at horribly marked up prices. Aside from the dedication of certain individuals in the hobby this is probably why DOA came into existence more than anything.

41. Probably 5th Motif's Venitu. Shelma Dolls Byrne,, Popovy Sister's Little Owl, Nabarro's Boone, Freakstyle's Salome, Duke Meow's Viscount Woods, La Legende de Temps Blue Magpie, Oxsana Geet's Sadhana, Doll Chateau Christina, Aileen Doll's Cedric, Black Cherry's Shao, Akh's Aki, Volks Chiyo, Batchix Drow, Granado V-06, Angell-Studio Minotaur, Magic Mirror Studio Maeve and I'm sure a few others. >__>

I miss HyperManiac. She did some great heads and a number of body types, impressive for being a single artist at that time. She put up a whole new website about 2-3 years ago, but not a peep of anything new since then.

I'm not sure. I am an active scripted tv watcher, I am into anime (not as much as of late, but for most of my life) and illustration art, I save all my money for travel and I study a lot of runway and street fashion. Basically, I'm into stuffing my eyes full of things I haven't seen before and looking for things to pique my interest.

I did just snap up a doll related accessory as if $$ were no object. I have a full Sadol kendo set on layaway.
For a completely fantastical wish, I'd make a complete BJD museum and have all the doll makers represented, each maker's work in a special room and I could add on to it infinitely. I could be a BJD curator.

I guess we answered that. How about the wise-assiest?

I work at the same place as St. James, an independent retail shop. I am the buyer for and oversee the departments of Fabric & Notions, Arts and Crafts, this includes needle crafts, fine art supplies, hobby supplies and jewelry findings, and the cities largest selection of feathers. I also buy Gift (anything I think my customer is looking for), Books, Clocks and Watches, Stationary, Gift Wrap and Greeting Cards, Bath from hardware to soaps and Window Coverings. On top of that, year round Costuming like tiaras, eyelashes, theatrical makeup and wigs. Jack of all trades sort of buyer.

My favorite thing about DoA is there are so many situations in which I can help somebody. Help answer a forum related question as a staff member, helping people find the doll or item they are looking for in a personal capacity.
I also like that people think of this as being a safe place to be, I want to keep the forum protected in that way. People should feel safe here~

42. x__x I am currently between jobs, which doesn't help in this hobby. :P

Information on customization! Every bit of helpful info I could ever need can be found here somewhere! :D

43. Hockey is awesome! What is your favorite team and who is your favorite player?

44. DOA is a great resource for all things BJD but my favorite part of it is the community. Not only can you meet bjd collectors from around the world but you are exposed to different thoughts, creative processes, characters, and so much more. It's ever changing but also a constant in the overall hobby.

:D Pittsburgh Penguins : Kris Letang
:D Chicago Blackhawks : Patrick Kane

Those are my 2 favorite teams and favorite players.
I do also like quite a few other players in the league :)!

45. The forum has so much to offer, but I'd have to say the people I meet on DOA. I've met some awesome people in the years I have been a member.

Tbh, I am not really into sports. I leave that to my sister. But I will always cheer for my home team, the Chicago Blackhawks.

46. I'm a veterinarian at a small animal (dog and cat) private practice. :3

The awesome, helpful members! I don't know that I could have gone anywhere in the hobby without all the lovely people here, sharing information about company reviews and updates, sharing the results of experiments with different products, and generally being so fun and welcoming! :D

47. Seeing members inspired to do new things that they have never tried before. :) I love enthusiastic, fearless new owners. And I love it even more when I get to see them grow into amazing doll artisans.
I am grateful to the members who were here before me, posting tutorials, patiently answering my newbie questions, and saying kind things about my terrible first face-up and blurry yellow photos. I wouldn't have stuck it out and learned so much if I hadn't gotten that encouragement, so it's important to me that DoA remain that kind of place for new owners.

48. Right now, homemaker and conqueror of fleas. I'm also an excellent bargain shopper and have contemplated becoming a professional finder. I had no idea that was an actual job until I looked it up. :sweat

The neatness of it, honestly. I've never seen a better regulated forum in the 15+ years I've been on the social part of the internet. Second to that, the photo reference subforum and box opening threads.

49. Holy smokes, I didn't know you could do that. I was all set to break into my best Jean Valjean ("24601!!!!!!") but I don't have enough digits.

So just to add a question:

Cats, Dogs or Something Else? :)

50. All of them. I love animals, furry, scaled, leatherback, shelled, boneless and otherwise.

51. Crazy cat lady... I haz one named Aya, from Japan.

52. I love both dogs and cats, but cats work better with my schedule. We have two felines, a long hair tuxedo boy named Sergei and a short haired torbi girl named Kalliope. I do call our office dog "my dog" since he's the only one I see on a regular basis, he listens to me and lets me hold him like a baby, he is a poodle named Pantone. I generally like all kinds of animals.

53. Kitteh cats! ^_^ I love all animals, but our two cats are my lil buddies. We have Remy, an orange striped tomcat, and Jubilee, a girl calico. They're both about a year old now; Jubilee's kind of a shy scaredy-cat, and Remy's kind of a big lovable whiny brat. :3

54. Everything. I love animals, but I would probably own a dog ! :)

55. Cats are my favorite. I have one, Kanga. She thinks some dolls are not worth her notice, and some are hers to lay on.
I also have a parrot named Racket. He's a green cheek conure.

56. Both! (And goldfish!) I grew up a dog person, but I got my first cat in college and he's done an excellent job of converting me.

57. Any of the above? Right now I have a cat, but I want to get a big dog in the future when my lifestyle is more suited to one.

58. Ok My questions is:

" If you could invent a new flavor of icecream what would it be?"

59. I am the other half of the "we" so I have the same cats and office dog. :XD: Kalliope is pretty much attached to me like a remora to a shark whenever I am home, so she seems to think that I am more hers.

I love cockatiels, but they are too noisy for apartment life, and I don't have room for snakes right now. I've had all sorts of birds and fish, but mostly the family animals were ordinary domestic cats and Husky-type dogs.

Yorkshire pudding! :D

60. Winter.
Not those gross, nasty, inversion winters.. more the crisp fresh ones after a heavy snow before the plows have mucked up the perfect shimmering white and the air is full of sparkling ice crystals and the world is silent except for the sound of snow.

I'm really not sure how to describe it, but the air has a certain taste.
