USA Miami/Southeast Florida Meetups

Aug 31, 2023

    1. Cool what's the address and what time is good for everyone.

    2. Afternoon works for me, should I bring snacks? Anybody have dietary restrictions or allergies?

Thinking about it now, the new-to-me information that the library room reservation is a paid activity explains so much about why they kept coming over lmfao I thought they were just happy to get people in the building who might help their headcounts regularly. :XD: I'm sure that's part of it but also... yeah lol the full marketing blitz

    3. I'm not allergic to anything.
Only nonprofit gets the runs for free

    4. I will dm the address to you both! I'm pretty much good all day, lol. Are we doing this on the 16th or the 17th? I can do either one, I just want to know how much time I have to run and grab last second things if I should need them.

You can bring snacks if you like! I'm only allergic to pork and pork byproducts, so if it needs to be cooked beforehand and has anything pork in it, it would probably be a good idea to do that before arriving. And then I just won't partake in any because I like living, lol.

    5. I have updated the first post!

    6. Is Saturday around 11 cool or is another time preferred

    7. This works for me! I'm gonna make brownies. :3c

    8. Works fine for me! Can't wait, I'm excited!!

    9. First post has been updated again with relevant information! Aaah, I'm so excited! I've begun setup, and after breakfast, I'm making brownies!

    10. I found the old meetup sign that I made years ago with the late and beloved Moony and put it up in the front window. <3 It's a little too windy to put it outside for my tastes, but it's something at the very least. <3

    11. Making a stop then heading over.

    12. Okay! I'm up and I have the living room set up. <3

    13. Same, making a stop then on my way!

    14. Yay! I'm ready! (How very Spongbob of me, lmao.)

    15. Y'all im so sorry it's been delay after weird crazy delay but I'll be rhere soon as long as i don't get ONE MORE BLOCKED ROAD lmfao

    16. The first post has been reset so we can begin planning for the next meetup!

    17. if we wanted to do something on a weekday, the Mr Bean coffee shop in The Falls is really peaceful on weekday evenings (at least yesterday was, lol). They have outdoor seating and in the evening it would be great diffuse festive lighting for cute dolly photos! I wouldn't dare go on the weekend but I was surprised just how quiet it was yesterday evening, even as early as like 6, so if we wanted to do a meet and greet there I'd be happy to host.
(also their coffee is really good and their menu looks delicious, haven't sampled much of the food myself but hey, don't feel like cooking AND dolly hangout lmao!)

    18. Oh my goodness im so sorry life got busy- did I miss a meetup!???

    19. It's an idea, I'm just not sure about The Falls. I've done meets and shoots there in the past with Moony, and people get grabby there. Or they let their kids get grabby. I used to work there back when American Girl was still there and the clientele that mall tends to attract is... unpleasant and wildly entitled at best.

I'm willing to give it a shot, I'm just apprehensive about the location.

    20. Totally fair. It seemed very quiet when I've been on weeknights, but there were no enticing touchables on the table to invite disaster either lmao. Any other cafe places come to mind?

    21. I'm gonna think on this one. Worse comes to worse, we can plan for another meetup at the library. At least this time, we know that it costs some money to borrow a space there, lmao.

      • x 1
    22. How much would the library charge?

    23. A small meeting room at West Kendall Regional Library is $25 an hour.

    24. .

    25. I'd be up for a Colorful Cute meet but I've never been to the store when they've had events, what's the space usually like? I'm in south Dade county so CC is the most doable for me by far.

    26. For their bigger events it can be pretty crowded. I'd say 15 people max can fit comfortably inside the store, so fun for a small night gathering.

    27. I'm in a similar area! Are there any places you'd recommend?

    28. Hello! Are you still holding meetups?

I recently moved back in with my parents and all my dolls are in storage, but it would do me good to spend time with other Doll People. :)

    29. Not sure about anyone else, but I've been down to plan one. I do know there is a meetup also being planned at Miraicon: ️ on Instagram: "BJD MEET @miraiconfl ALL doll brands are welcome! Come see me as Mirai Suenaga on Saturday, October 18th, with your dolls or love for them! . . . #bjd #balljointeddoll #bjdmeet #dollmeet #volks #volksdoll #volksdollfiedream #volkssuperdollfie #dollfiedream #superdollfie #azone #azonedoll #smartdoll #dannychoo #culturejapan #resindoll #vinyldoll #holidaymatsuri #holmat"

    30. I've been mad busy with non-dolly stuff, sorry I kinda fell off the map there! I'm definitely down to have a meet. I've been thinking about asking over at Otaku Comics and Games on US1 if they take reservations for their game room, they carry blindbox BJDs and that might be a fun activity. The parking is free but limited, when it's crowded I tend to just park at the Target a block or so over and just hoof it.
Colorful Cute definitely has the appeal of all the Sunset Place murals and photo spots, like the stone steps etc, so I'd still be up to meeting up there as well. Evenings would work best for that for me unless we plan far out enough I can request off.
I can commit to the Miraicon meet, I'll put in my time off request tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing everybody!

    31. @cleverLC welcome! I did the same two years ago. Back in our home area codes :XD:

    32. Hey, I'm going to the Miraicon meet too! I didn't realize Otaku Comics and Game had a game room. I'm sure they wouldn't mind a reservation if it's not in use.

    33. Ah. I'm in the Ft Lauderdale area and don't have my car, so that store is a long way to ask my parents to drive me.

    34. I thought it might be nice for us to have our own Discord server for planning meetups and the like, so I went ahead and made one.

Here's the link: Join the SoFla BJDs Discord Server!

    35. Having done many a Sunset Place meetup way back in the day, I would personally wait for the weather to cool off a touch. I don't know if they still have the tables and chairs with the umbrellas that the mall used to have anymore. I don't remember seeing them the last time I was there.

Let us know what the verdict is with Otaku Comics and Games, though. I'd love to see what the shop is like. :aheartbea

    36. First post has been updated with the MiraiCon information!

    37. I may not make it to Mirai after all, I seem to have gotten sick and I'm not on my LIFE contributing germs to the Con Plague. I'll see how I feel tomorrow but I wanted to say something before I forgot just in case

    38. The first post has been reset for the next meetup. :aheartbea

    39. Alright, I went by Otaku Comics and Games and spoke with Roy, one of the owners. I made sure to explain the connection between the products they sell (acrylic paints for customizing minis, blind box MJDs/BJDs, miniatures, etc) and our hobby, and brought along a few of my dolls of varying sizes to give them an idea of what to expect. They'd love to have us, either for a one-time event or for a recurring meetup. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are best for evenings, as their space hosts tourneys and weekly gatherings other days of the week. Weekends are hardest to accommodate as that's both when the store is busiest and their extra spaces are full for store/promo events, of course. They have access to a larger space than even I knew, they've rented the storefront next door to them (entrance on the other side of the building) for events to accommodate larger groups!

I'd love to be able to support a local small business and grow the local BJD community. He also mentioned that they'd be able to stock more dolls if there was higher demand, as if I needed any more excuses to be in there buying stuff lmao. Even for a small selection right now they are still offering a pretty wide variety, Liroros, Ten Thousand Escape Plans, and a line of boy dolls I've actually never seen stocked on common collector sites, The King's Avatar (I think this is a tie-in merch line for an anime but I'm out of the loop on such things these days lmao).

I would love it if we could start thinking about a date that we could commit to so I could contact them about reserving the space. I know this location is not somewhere everybody can make it to easily, but I think it's worth building connections with local places throughout the area. How do we feel about Tuesday evening November 18th? Thanksgiving is late, on the 27th this year, so that should be safely far enough from the holidays to not disrupt anybody's plans too much. Let me know what you think or if another date would be better!

    40. November 18th sounds good to me! If everyone else is in accordance, I can update the first post!

    41. We are confirmed for the event space at Otaku Comics and Games (accessed from the building's other staircase, not the one leading to the main storefront) for November 18th from 5-8pm! Bring your dolls of all sizes, and charge those camera batteries: the meetup theme is Photoshoots! I'll be setting up five different photo areas with props, miniatures, and objects from my collection to suit a range of sizes of dolls from big to small. The themes are:

      Sunken Treasure/Undersea
      -Classroom/Playroom
      -Silly Hats
      -Holiday Gifts
      -D&D Tabletop Game

Feel free to bring props and accessories of your own, especially more silly hats!

    42. I might be able to catch the last half hour. Unfortunately I work until 6:30 pm, but I'd love to see other dolls! I don't know if there's plans for dinner after, but idk if anyone would be open to doing something after as well.

    45. Should I bring some of the doll seating that I have? I've also got some mini D&D dice that would be more in scale to larger dolls that I'm willing to bring along as well.

      Edited to add:
I can also bring along the BJD meetup sign that I've had for ages.

    46. I would say that's not a bad idea.

On a side note, not sure if the meetup would be open to non DOA members? I can make a post on social media to advertise it.

    47. Where the heck did my reply to this go omg, but yes please @Fango DeMaria !

    48. @Winter Q go for it! I made an instagram reel and posted to stories for Otaku to share, they've also added it to the event schedule on the shop's Discord server

    49. m I am about 30 minutes away. Excited to meet everyone there!

    50. Thank you everybody for coming out! I had a great time

    51. So much fun, and we made new friends!
Might start planning something new soon. It gets trickier during the holidays, so I get the feeling this might be more of a January situation.
