Maskcat 57cm Dolls - part 2

Yes, I think they are very versatile. If you want, you can make her fangs more visible, but at the same time they are so small that you can easily hide them if you don't want fangs on your doll ^^.

 

That sounds versatile!! The fangs are part of the draw for me, so I’ll definitely be playing them up haha

 

@Caramello_Cat - She's beautiful! That's a lovely faceup, too - her eyeshadow is very pretty. Really, you can't go wrong with any of the Maskcat dolls. They are all so nice!

One thing I have noticed is that their latest heads (Fleur and Olivia) are a bit smaller than the previous heads - I hope they won't make all the new heads smaller. I like the big ones! haha

This may be their new standard. If I remember correctly, Lisette v2 is also slightly smaller than the older Lisette version

 

@StellaMarigold yep new heads for a time have been 20cm to look more realistically proportioned¸ while Lisette is the only one who is slightly smaller (22) if I remember well. It is noticeable but not too much. The older heads are 22.7cm, I like the big-headed look myself.

 

Oh well, if it is the new standard I'll get used to it!

I've arranged my dolly plans so that I'll have my own Lisette a little bit later, but every time I see one I want to get her so bad

 

This is the 57cm thread, but Maskcat released a new 62cm body that will accommodate all but the smallest heads (Fleur, Olivia, etc.) What do you think?
I've read that there are plans to revisit the 57 body with one-piece hands (no separate ball) and maybe other jointing improvements. I have Lisette planned for later and I do prefer the big head proportions, so I might wait until that happens to get her on the 57.

The thread title might be changed to Maskcat 1/3 to include larger dolls?

 

Oh wow, the new body is already released! That was fast!

I prefer the 57cm body - anything larger than that is just too difficult for me to handle and I also love the more youthful proportions - but it is nice to have options!

Also, I personally like the way the current wrists on the 57cm body look, but I'll be glad to see what they come up with in the future. The only improvement I would possibly recommend for that body is lengthening the inner piece in the mobility thigh joint so that it is easier to keep the legs posed with that joint is engaged. I find the lower part of the thigh slips off the mobility joint rather easily. Other than that, I think the 57cm body is perfect (well, I'd love a neck joint, but I don't think that's likely due to their aesthetic).

 

Decided to take a look at the new body because a Maskcat Doll has been on my wishlist forever and while the new body is a good option, I definitely still like the 57cm body better.
It's probably because I personally like bobble-headed dolls better than pin-headed dolls.
That's also why I dislike that Maskcat made the newest heads smaller than all the earlier ones. (As has been mentioned here.)

Such a beauty - and her faceup fits nicely with the aesthetics! I especially like the hat on her.

 

I also definitely prefer the 57cm body to the 62cm. It's wild to see the side-by-side photos -- my brain refuses to process that it's only 5cm difference in height, the new body is just so big!

I hope someday this trend of pin-headed dolls finishes and we go back to the trend of bobble-headed dolls. I liked the one much better!

 

As you can see from my avatar, I too have a fondness for bobble- headed dolls. I'm in love with my pot-bellied Grim.

 

I do agree that some companies are going too far in the small heads but I am in a non-bubble head mood currently! There is something for everyone!

 

I quite like the proportions on the new body! I don’t go for pin-headed dolls very often, but I don’t feel this is pin headed, I feel like this is more realistic proportions like I’d see on an iplehouse doll, or a soom supergem.

 

It's been a rather stressful time lately but Mina has this way of putting my heart at ease that I think no other doll will ever match. I love this doll so much. It's like Banyo really has a way of sculpting a soul into these dolls.

 

Maskcat has discontinued the 57cm body this was announced on Weibo at the time of the December sale. Today I checked the site and it was gone... for the time being you can only order on the 62cm.
Standing from what's been said on Weibo, Banyo intends to remake the 57 from scratch and add some quality of life changes like one-piece hands (no separate ball). I imagine she'll release the new sculpt soon. I had postponed Lisette to get her on the new 62cm body when it was announced, but her small head won't work that well on it, so I hope it won't be too different from the 3.1

 

That's understandable they closed order for the current 57cm if they are working on the new version...although...I don't know if there is need of such frequent change or change on entire body if they are updating hand joint system alone... Fingers crossed!!

 

@Lady Maeve I'm going on a guess since the 57cm is now labeled as "discontinued" and there's no longer a drop-down menu to choose which body for 1/3 dolls. No official statement on Instagram etc.
Since they had mentioned on Weibo they were discontinuing the body after the December event, I assume that's the reason.
The body will be a full resculpt - I also thought it would've been just an update, but apparently Banyo wants to revise the whole body.

My (rather wild) guess is that she'll make it more realistically proportioned, so sort of like the L version of the 1/6 bodies. I think so because she mentioned a while ago on Weibo that she felt the 57 body was too slim; also the general direction of the market is away from big-headed dolls, so it would make sense. Personally I hope she'll stay with the proportions of the current one, but at this point I can only wait and see.

 

Ahhh! I'm glad I bought both the NS and WS bodies already. I love the 57cm body exactly as it is, slim and all, wrists and all, and I'm sorry to have any changes made. But we'll see how it goes. I'll be interested to see what they come up with.

 

This is such unfortunate news. I'm so tired of "SD" sized dolls getting bigger and bigger; I genuinely refuse to get any dolls over 60cm and the list of companies with 60cm & below offerings shrinks every year... I've never been a huge Volks person but this past year I kept welcoming SDGr girls into the house because I really do love the size.

Hopefully we will see a really nicely sculpted 57cm Maskcat girl in the near future.

 

That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking!! I like SD being “1/3”scale as it is originally said to be.
I wish maskcat kept “skinny” version and thicker version if that’s where they are going.

I just saw they have a lot of in-stock dolls in 1/3 and 1/4.

This makes me very glad I ordered my Astrid when I did. Between the head re-sculpting and discontinuing the 57cm body, she would've been an entirely different girl had I waited! I, too, prefer the stylized big-headed look, and I genuinely enjoy how slim and dainty the old 57cm body is.

It will be interesting to see what Maskcat has in store going forward.

 

@Thespian the site says unavailable, but I think it's still possible to order a doll on the current 57 body? I'm not sure. Either way a new 57 body is in the works. I've decided to set my order aside for when it will be released.

 

I'm in the same boat! I'm so happy I got the original 57cm Astrid. The new head looks good (and not too different), but I'd be sad if I missed out on having the original 57cm body in my collection. I use it for one of my Angell Studio heads and its perfect (Astrid meanwhile has commandeered a Sadol body).

I'm also waiting for the new 57 before I make any ordering decisions.

 

I came across some Maskcat heads and now have a NS Margo head in need of a body. I'd buy directly from Maskcat if I could, but I actually want to make mine a cute boy! So their body won't work. Does anyone know what companies resin matches their NS that I should look at?

 

Surprisingly enough, my Feeple65 Carol in NS matches the Maskcat 57cm NS body I have rather nicely:

So, it may work for you the other way too. Maskcat heads are rather large imo, so a Feeple60 or Feeple65 boy body might work...

 

Volks seems to match them too

 

If you want a truly perfect, can't even tell it's a hybrid match: Sadol. Sadol is a perfect match. Like PERFECT match.

Angell Studio Butter is also an excellent match. I have a 3-way hybrid: an Angell Studio Butter head on a Maskcat NS body with Sadol NS hands. You cannot tell she's a hybrid at all. I also have a Maskcat NS head on a Sadol NS body, too.

Fairyland is an OK match but slightly off, same with Volks. They are both within the acceptable range, but in certain lighting the resin mismatch will be obvious.

I've just ordered my first 1/3 size Maskcat doll through Alice's Collection. They still offer the 57cm body as main option if you buy a full doll. I love the new body, but it's really a bit too big for me (after years of collecting 1/6 - 1/4 dolls, I've only recently started getting into the world of large bjd!)

 

I was planning for a while the last two years after much consideration to welcome two new 57cm girls from Maskcat to my collection eventually. I knew the 62 body release was going to allow for more variation, which is always awesome, but was really shocked when I saw the 57cm body discontinued after some regularly schedule window shopping

I did ask about this because I had my heart set on 57cm -- it's one of my favorite doll sizes, not too big, not too small, easy to clothe -- and Maskcat replied saying that they were going to release the new 57cm body sometime later this year, but they wanted to update the body to have slightly larger proportions as they felt the torso was too small(? thin ?) for their taste now. Looking at the 62cm body, I like the new direction and joints they're going in, and I trust the new 57 should be beautiful too. Fingers crossed that it doesn't deviate too much from the 57 we know and love!

 

@crappyshappyshaw I'm 50/50 about it... I love the big-headed look and I don't want that to change - I think the intention is to downplay that old school style of proportions. I think the correct word is "thin", because that's what was used in a Weibo post a while ago. We'll see. I just hope the new body will be a good fit for Agnes or Lisette...

 

I don't know if others got the issue with their 57cm body, but mine couldn't tilt the head to the side because of a not enough high hook in the head.
So I added a resin donut, and now she can tilt the head!

 

I am really excited to see owner pictures of Valentina and of the new body! Her features and expression seem like a good fit for a character I'd like to shell, and the height is a bonus; the way she's styled in the promotional shots is LOVELY but definitely far from how I would style my character.

 

Banyo has posted progress pictures of the new 57 body on instagram and it looks like it might be ready by the end of the year! I'm committing to another doll in December but it looks like I'll get my 2nd Maskcat next year, finally!

 

I got Juni in tan on the 62cm body. I am absolutely sold on that body! Is the most beautiful body I own!

 

I saw that today, and I am excited for it. I hope they don't make too many changes to the 57cm body. I really like the original build of the dolls, that's what drew me too them in the first place.

 

Maskcat just posted an impressive little preview of the new 57 on Bilibili. It's looking great!
I have been putting off my second Maskcat to wait for the new body and now I'm getting so impatient looks like Banyo is managing to improve what was already near perfect.

 

@lutke - I saw it! I asked if the old hands work on the new body (I still prefer them, big wrist joints and all)!

I'm going to have to break out my Juni and see how she compares with posing. I'm pretty sure she can do all those poses already, but the new body may be more stable. I do like how the legs look a little slimmer (despite them saying they wanted a thicker body?). If I end up liking the new version I'll probably order one in WS eventually. Maybe with an Astrid or Bruna head.

Which sculpt are you thinking for your second Maskcat?

 

I asked about extra parts and from what I understood, the jointed hands should stay the same. Not sure about additional hands, but I'm going to guess the old ones will be compatible. However (entirely my speculation) there's a chance that new extra hands might be an update of the old ones (same or very similar poses except with no ball) so maybe it's worth it to wait. That's what I am doing.
I can't tell from the video if the legs are thinner. I hope not! I feel that especially lower legs on dolls tend to be too thin because the shins are always long. The general line looks more or less like the previous 57 which is great.
The video really impressed me. The mobility joint is working so well even with such loose stringing. The old body's mobility lock worked well for me, but it wasn't nearly as nice and stable.

I'm settled on Agnes. I liked other dolls better at first but she grew on me over the past year. I've got a commitment this year but early 2026 I'll get her for sure.

I guess that she fulfilled that with the 62.

 

You're probably right about the legs (and I do agree that many bjds have legs that are just too long and skinny) - it is probably a perspective thing. The only pros to me would be maybe a closer fit on the legs in the "seiza" pose (one I love but that the current body can't quite manage, although it can kneel well).

If the jointed hands can fit the new arms, then the old hands should still fit as well. I know they are sculpting new hands, and I'm excited about that! I'll use all of them haha!

I agree about the previous mobility lock - it does tend to slip out more easily. Hopefully this one will continue to be as effective in resin as it looks in the WIP state!

Agnes is beautiful - an unusual beauty. She's on my list too along with Bruna (another unusual face). I'll probably have a whole collection of heads someday that can share a few bodies.

 

Maskcat posted a photo of the new and old 57cm body side by side!

It is beautiful of course, I love the new mobility thigh joints, and I'm happy the hands aren't smaller (it looks like the old hands would fit the new wrists) but I am disappointed that the new body is taller. I felt like the original height was perfect. Oh well! They did say it would shrink a little when cast, but I would imagine not very noticeably.

I'm glad you like it! Even though I'm a little sorry about the height, that probably won't stop me from getting one of the new bodies in the future!

I've been petitioning for a 50-53cm body, though, and really hope they consider it for the future to complete their line-up of 1/3 ladies. That size is so rare - and in their style it would be absolutely perfect. It could definitely work with their current heads–Ronia would look so cute as a younger sister! And in terms of clothing, it might be able to share with Obitsu 50 and similar.

I don't know if they are interested, but if anyone else here is, please tell them!

 

@StellaMarigold My only concern is that it might end up slimmer on the arms and legs, but even so, it will be a marginal difference. I doubt the shrinking will be that dramatic.

The only 1/3 52cm body I can think of is the AiL one and I love the natural proportions, so i understand what you mean. Too bad it's all single-jointed.

 

Yeah, the single joints would drive me crazy! It is beautiful, though.

I've owned Bimong's 53cm body - very pretty, but the loooong arms and legs just didn't fit what I had in mind. I like Dollstown's Elf 52cm body (the hands are lovely) but I'm not a fan of the torso jointing. The Zaoll body doesn't pose well enough for me, etc. I am unfortunately extremely choosy about aesthetics and posing XD

But Maskcat likes to do new things, so I can hope at least!

For those interested, I have quickly made an overlay comparison of the proportions between the two bodies. Mind that I did a bit of shrinking to make them the same size, so this is just about the way they compare proportionally. This is not representative of what the actual size of the new body will be, which is probably closer to the official picture posted earlier, so take this with a grain of salt.
The general takeaway is that the new body (grey overlay) has slightly wider shoulders and a slightly longer torso. They both look great, but I think the new body has more harmonious proportions that the previous one.
That said I cannot guess what the current heads will look like on the new body. This is an unedited overlap. As said previously, there will be a little bit of shrinking for the actual casting. You can see that the leg length is nearly the same.

I am inclined to agree with you about proportions - everything does look in more harmony now. I see that I thought the legs were slimmer because the torso and shoulders are a little wider to balance them.

I hope that the current heads will look just as good as before, but my favorite (Juni) is probably the largest head they've sold so she ought to be okay. I think the slightly wider neck might even suit her.

Well after 4 years I decided to get a Maskcat doll. I found one in stock with face up done at DDE and ordered Margo. Question I have is how tall will she be and which measurements will she have. I saw two different info sheets in the photos and I don't know if she is on this new body they talk about on website or an old one. Also what size clothes will she wear? Like can she wear Volks or Dollheart? I know 1/3 but that can vary from doll to doll. Also did they change the hands hooking system to more like what most companies do or does she still have the screwed in ring for hands?

 

@animemom Height is exactly 57cm with flat feet unless you ordered a newly made doll on the 62cm. Volks SD10/13 and SDGr clothes will fit nicely.
Hands have the one-touch system to rest the hook into a notch. Feet do not have this system on the 57.

 

I don't know which one DDE had in stock. Guess I will find out when she arrives.

I am excited to see the heads on the new body! It looks really nice in the photos of posing. Also, I'm very happy to read that they tested the old hands with the new body and they still work (I know the new hands are meant to be an upgrade and I like aspects of them, but the old hands are just so beautiful).
