Wigs making/styling a Very Anime wig?

Feb 12, 2022

    1. So I seem to have a habit of coming up with designs that are impractical to make in 3D.

I'm trying to style a wig that's styled into pretty spikey ends with a lot of volume. I know I'm going to have to make the base wig myself because the first one I bought had nowhere NEAR enough to sculpt. Other than that I'm kind of at a loss, my current thought is to treat it like doing wigs for cosplay just on a smaller scale, but I'm not sure if there are any better tips for this? I appreciate any suggestions!

The nonsense I'm trying to do btw in case that helps

    2. You might have good luck with making a yarn wig, or one out of soy fiber (i think its soy...), both are easy to style in spikes and more gravity defying ways, and are popular for more anime style wigs because of that. This youtuber has a fair few tutorials on how to make a yarn wig that you can use as a jumping off point.

    3. They're actually one of the ones I've been referencing, their wigs are great! The problem I've been having with yarn is just not being able to get it long enough after brushing for a fairly long wig but I'm not sure if that's just user error haha. I haven't heard of soy fiber though, I'll look into it. Thanks!

    4. What scale are you working with? Knowing that may help with mor relevand advice as some fibres work better in some scale than others and, as you've discovered with the acrylic, some fibres don't come in all lengths.

    5. I second going with the "it's just cosplay in smaller scale" approach. Looking up tutorials, maybe of characters with equally full/gravity defying hairstyles, works best to learn the technique. Everything else is just more fiddly because of the scale, but otherwise it works the same.

    6. Ah yeah forgot about that! He's a 1/4

Fortunately I've done a similar sort of style for a cosplay myself before so I think I'll be able to manage it, just haven't done anything as tiny or completely from scratch before;; Thanks!

    7. definitely agree with trying similar tricks to cosplay! it worked out great for me when I did hair for playline dolls. I do reccomend volks' water wax for styling instead of hair sprays though!

    8. Materials: Synthetic vs Natural
Synthetic fibers to help hold the shape, yarn or faux fur would probably be a good option if you want to go that way. Natural fibers like mohair do not have much of a sheen but are very puffy and soft. So it really depends on if you want a truly sculpted look vs a natural volume look.

      Structure:
I would probably make the tiny pigtails clip-ons? Similar to old school Miku cosplay wigs. Other than that, the base of the wig is just a 2 tone middle part, with a slight zig-zag at the front. Depending on your material you could do a hot-water boil to help achieve the curl at the ends of the hair. There are surprising amount of really good cosplay wig tutorials on Deviantart and I would really recommend those.

TLDR: Yeah it will probably just be like building a cosplay wig.

    9. Ooh thanks, I'll definitely see if I can find some!

Thank you so much for the thorough breakdown! I really like the look of natural fibers but I think I'm leaning towards synthetic just for this one. I did actually plan on try to do clip on ponytails so I can let him wear hats without making an entire separate wig and fortunately there are quite a few cosplay tutorials for them.
