Hello, I'm reaching the final phase of sculpting on my bjd, and need to know how strong the magnets need to be for detachable ear and tail parts that will go over hair and cloth. Does anyone know the proper pull force needed (in lbs) for these parts, especially if the ears need to stay in place over hair? I'm looking on k &J magnets and I don't know whats too strong or too weak for my bjd.
I don't know specifics about magnet strength, but maybe you could look at some of the magnets offered by Soom? A lot of their dolls have horns and wings and such that stick on over wigs and clothes. I know (for example) I have a Silt/Keny skull on my Sov's head, and that sticks on more or less OK, though it is a little weak as he has a rather thick homemade dreadlocks wig. If he had a normal wig it would probably stay better. I think the force needed to keep on a specific part would depend on the weight of your ears and tail, but you could always buy a few samples of different sized and see which ones work best for you?
Thank you checked out those magnets , but I still wish it listed the pull force on it so I can get magnets from a different supplier.
@Voxenna neodymium magnets come in different grades with different pull weights. I’d like to know the pull force needed for detachable ears over wigs.
Why don't you buy strongest what you can buy, if there is some value declared? Just to mention - don't ever bake or heat magnet with polymer clay!! They loose polarity and loose strength! That happend to me, and I went to explore what happend.
1. That’s expensive(especially if your trying to produce multiple dolls) 2. The stronger they are the easily they fracture 3. Those magnets get really strong. A pull force of 10_20lbs for a doll is way too strong. Thanks for the suggestion though. I guess it’s just trial an error at this point!
Yeeesh. Look, f you know how much is too much you know how much you need. And once they're in the doll they'd be hard to fracture. They said to buy the strongest you can buy, meaning the strongest you can afford.
Sorry I was brash I just typed it out fast. I’m pretty anal about this stuff and feels like no one actual read the OP.
Because there isn't one answer. It depends on how big the doll ears are, how thick the wig is, what material the doll's made of/ how heavy it is, what size of magnet you need, what the use of the doll is, if there'll be interactions with other magnets is etc etc. Wit dollmaking it really is all trial and error. The best would be to buy small samples of 3 or 4 strengths and test them. Settle on one size of magnet and get different strengths. Put them in the doll and test them out. Test how easily the ears pull off, it they slide around, if you need 2 pairs of magnets to keep them in place of if they sit without pivoting, test different sizes/ weights of ears, etc etc. There isn't a straightforward answer. Also depends on you, if you want the ears to hold on lightly for display and easy adjustment or if you want them to stay in place firmly to withstand play.
