Love at first sight?

Jun 13, 2014

    1. My Doll Love Kaja Vish. As soon as I saw his company photos I was sunk. He almost became my first doll but instead sat on the back burner for a few months before I started a layaway with ACBJD, and during that time I had a few tinies sneaking in.

    2. Supia doll Tabitha...cant stop thinking about it!

    3. Every doll I buy is a love at first sight - and keep loving after that to even consider buying one. Currently my big one I just fell for is Dreaming Doll’s Limmu. Already has a character in my head and the whole nine yards. This would be my first 70cm doll if I do go ahead and get him instead of getting a body for a floating head of mine.

    4. Almost every doll I end up buying I instantly love. I will say Doll Chateau Alberta is the doll that finally broke me down and turned me from an admirer to a collector. She was so bizarre and represented a kind of bjd I hadn't seen before. I think human sculpts are often gorgeous, but the fantasy sculpts that have an uncanny and some what unsettling beauty are something else and I just can't resist them!

Dream Valley dolls are my weakness these days, I fall in love with so many of them.

    5. This has happened to me twice actually! Once with Volks SD-F-59 (Saki) and the second time with Switch Ajeong Closer, I couldn't stop thinking about both of them after seeing them:whee:

    6. I did a few weeks ago (after being in the hobby for about 10 years), even though I never thought it would happen to me. The sculpt I fell in love with is Elf Meadow from The Trinket Box by Kim Arnold.

    7. I will never forget this doll, and it is killer I can't remember enough detail to try to look her up.

Years ago, back in the mid 90s, there was a picture of this doll in the local yellow pages, which I'm assuming was a resin girl, on a vintage bicycle. She had a slight smile on her face, black and white striped stocking, a black dress, and wavy red hair. Her eyes might have been green, but I can't recall. I knew that I could have never gotten my parents to get me something like that, so I didn't bother even asking.

A friend shared a picture of Super Dollfie Marie Antoinette and I was floored. From what I can remember, the expression is pretty close especially the wider eyes. So, now I have my first resin girl on the way to me in March. Not sure if I will like her as my collection is mostly vinyl, but I can't wait to see her in person.

I still wish I knew what kind of doll that was in that phone book just for curiosity sake.

    8. I’m definitely the kind of person that instantly falls in love with dolls when I see pics. There’s really only been one time that I thought I didn’t like a doll, but when I saw her in a different skin tone and faceup that I realized I loved her potential.

    9. To be honest, when I was considering my first doll. I found Ringdoll and was thinking about getting Lexi or maybe Cryan. I liked them well enough considering my favorite Ringdoll doll hasn't been produced in more than a handfull of years, when one day, when I was browsing Alice's Collections, I found out about a company called Loong Soul.
When I first laid my eyes on Dong Jun, I was instantly hooked. If Lexi or Cryan only resonated with me for 60%, Dong Jun ticked all the boxes and even the ones I didn't know I was biased against.
I waited for weeks to make sure it wasn't some sort of 'puppy love' connection, but when I didn't look at his company photo's or even saw any BJD related news for a month and after weeks, when I allowed myself to explore doll content again, I saw him again, the connection was just as strong as before and I knew for sure that he was the doll for me.
I was a little sad I missed the pre order period for his other fullset with the styled wig, but I allowed myself to get another wig to try and mimic his hairstyle so hopefully, I can make him wear his gorgeous crown.
The wait is agonizing, but totally worth it.
I'm still looking for his specific styled wig from the other fullset, but no luck so far...

    10. I love all of my dolls and I have of course and I've bought them for a reason, but three of the major "Oh my god they're so perfect I'm in love I need them" dolls are SiCang's Ahe (which I've recently acquired), and then Illusion Garden's Unicorn Yuli and Soom's Vampire Gluino (Both of which I don't have yet)

    11. Sha from Dream of Doll. He was my very first BJD ever but sadly I don't own him anymore.

    12. Was he the one that went with Delphine? I’ve always wanted her. She’s one of those grails I love but will never have.

    13. @Disir Darkness Kalix was with Delphine. They were the gray vampires. Sha was with Tender Shall in a priest/nun theme.

    14. Oh ok! I couldn’t remember, it’s been so long since I looked at them now!

    15. Sometimes, but mostly I will views different face up to double check. Some doll like Narmor I love it until it got face up and it is my favourite doll for two years.

    16. Love at first sight for me had to be my Dollshe Hound. I have several others that do qualify as love at first sight, but I didn't even give a second thought to ordering him. he is quite yellow now from over 15 years of love and enjoyment but he is still stunning to me.

    17. I feel like that is almost a requirement for me to purchase a doll. If I don't have that immediate, almost gut reaction to a doll, then I rarely give them a second thought, much less think about them long enough to consider buying.

One of the first BJDs I ever bought, RingDoll's Raven, did that for me. It was his face sculpt, that little smirk, that sold me. It was so different than the usual "hot boy" look I see on most male/boy dolls, and it just gave him such a fun personality. To date, he's still my only male doll.

    18. The first time I saw an Idealian Hyperon I knew he was the one for me. And at the time I was looking for a scar faced boy and Soom just launched a hyperon scar faced. I almost had to sell him due to financial problems, but luckily I didn't have to and I still own him.

    19. This is an interesting thing/feeling - Astrid was not a doll I felt in love with first sigh...I purchased her in December, blank! Because maskcat had her in stock. when she arrive I was not excite to see no face so had to work on her face up, and my god! I love this girl now!!! she's soooooooo beautiful!

    20. MiniFee Ruth… Still can’t believe this sculpt is discontinued.

    21. I liked Frappzilla's Lupi from when I first saw the in-progress sculpting photos. I couldn't order them the first go-round because I was more than a little financially unstable due to the everything of 2020. I was very excited to get in on the second preorder!

In practice, it's taken a hot minute to bond with them because my own faceup skills are... well, they're not bad, but I do struggle to make what's in my head actually appear on the doll's face.

    22. DDH-11 from Volks stole my heart even with the company photos! My dream is to get one directly from Japan one day at Doll Point.

    23. A lot of my dolls are/were love at 1st sight....which leads to many an unplanned purchase lemme tell u :sweat:lol: Tho there seems to be some difference for me if its company-new or 2ndhand. Brand new dolls I will waffle abt, but usually my 2ndhand sweethearts are the ones that get me head over heels

    24. I know my Iplehouse JID Tania was love at first sight. I loved her from the promo pics on Iplehouse's website, and I knew she was the special little girl I was waiting for from the first time I held her :aangel:

    25. Absolutely!
My first, Volks Shiro Tachibana, was love at first sight.
Most of my other dolls was/are that as well, but Nobu (Shiro) remains special <3

    26. Opal from Coral Reef caught my eye right away. It's such a unique sculpt, and I LOVE mantis-themed things!

      • x 2
    27. It was originally Hujoo Freya and Freyr, but after that it was FallinDoll Force Fox. I really want Force so bad. Freya and Freyr will have to wait, I'm afraid.

    28. Maybe it's weird, but I think that all my dolls are love at first sight, otherwise I probably wouldn't want to buy them.
      Just a thought

    29. Volks Chris was definitely love at first sight, but another one I actually wasn’t sure what I thought of at first (not gonna out the poor sculpt cause I love it now) At first I actually thought it looked kinda silly ^^; but now I own it and love it

    30. Hehe yes, as a kid i had seen lillycats kitty jolie, and instantly fell in love! Soon i will have her :kitty2

    31. Yes but ironically I tend to not notice the mold at all when I'm first going through a catalog. I always stumble onto it at a later time - often after lengthy plans - and I know that's the one.

    32. I bought more dolls than I should have in my first 4 years in the hobby, and I’m in the process of selling off over 1/3 of my collection. The ones that are staying were almost all ‘love at first sight’ for me, and are very unique artist sculpts

    33. Luts KDF Kai..... instant love. while i'm kinda sad it took me as long as i did to be able to afford my first doll, something felt very right about it being him - i'd never been so instantly enamored with a sculpt before, so perhaps it was for the best that it happened to line up the way it did!

edit - aaaaaand im gonna have to add another to this very short list because i somehow Just saw KDF Muse Belimbing........ oh my god. i have no words even to describe how much i love this sculpt. its gonna be a good long while before i can afford another doll but that's the one.

    34. Got one: the classic Luts Delf El. I was mulling on getting El as my first tall dorrie after seeing his mold way back 2007 (was looking at the Lishe mold first but the first time I saw her brother El, love at first sight :love). I was fortunate to get his head in both open eye and dreamy eye version, and his Littlefee version before they were, unfortunately, discontinued.

    35. Dear Mine Lucy.
Fell in love with the Summer 22 Special Magical Version but missed her unfortunately...
I hope they re-release her some time.

    36. Switch Waseon and Devotiondoll Bite!

    37. Does it count if you hear music the moment you see it?
I'm not sure if it's the face up on Doll Chateau's Twilight or the expression. (It would be just 'pouty', but the cheek line carries all the way to the lips.) Edge of 17, is the song.

    39. My Iplehouse Aria was love at first sigh. I just saw her and I knew I need her in my life. I fact, she is my first bdj and I love her so much even if I don't play a lot with her - shame on my cow (?) -

    40. Ringdoll's Leper King Baldwin, I only wanted anime dolls and then I saw him lmao!

    41. Ironically, it was the first doll I ever got, a Resinsoul Pixiu. I just adored their little face and all the dragon parts and knew they had to be my first doll! I have no regrets even all this time later

    42. I found that doll, unfortunately only 30 were released :atremblin I feel incomplete without that volks x moi meme moitie doll and I can’t find one anywhere

    43. Dollzone's Devil Tarot, specifically the beast version with the cat head. Also Dream Valley's 1/4 dragon, lmao.

    44. Oh, I had to give up on those. Cat head beast was so pretty, too.

    45. Back in February, I was exploring the Luts website for fun and saw a Kid Delf with a really precious face. He immediately stood out to me, but I decided to keep looking, since I wasn’t planning on buying anyone soon. Then, I saw another doll and went, “wow!” only to realize it was the same doll, but his Senior Delf version. It was then that I knew I needed to have him. So, technically, I fell in love with him twice! A few days later, I purchased the Kid Delf Kai that I had my eyes on initially. I can’t wait to get my sweet boy!!

    46. There were two dolls I felt this way with:
      Gem of Doll Nymph
      Ringdoll Anubis
The gut feeling didn't let me down, I love both dolls!

    47. Dollstown Yujin :love:love loved that face from the moment I've seen her in a WIP gallery for a body. I'm waiting for a second one. Absolutely in love with that sculpt.

    48. This is hard—I fell in love at first sight with a few sculpts. One of them was IG Angelos.Johan. There’s something special about him; I felt an instant, magnetic pull the moment I saw his sculpt and photos. I also never really planned on collecting 75cm boys, but then I saw ID75 R. Dokkebi Garion (Baby Pink, LE, After Event SHDSP2024), and knew I needed to bring him home. Of course, he dropped at a time when I couldn’t afford him. But! Luckily, I managed to find someone rehoming him—and now he’s finally home with me, and I couldn’t be happier.

    49. When I first got into this hobby, I was a bit overwhelmed by all of the sculpts and companies, and there wasn't a specific doll that drew me in. Dolls in general have always appealed to me though.

Once getting a doll was going to become a reality, and I was in a position to finally pick one out, I was quickly drawn towards Souldoll Katie.A. She was new from Souldoll at the time and very few photos of her existed outside of Souldoll's website. I remember looking for new pictures obsessively during the waiting period lol.

The other doll that really stood out to me was Volks Suiseiseki. Initially this was because I really liked (and still like) Rozen Maiden, but later I was consistently finding a certain sculpt, loving it, and it was always Suiseiseki/Souseiseki. She became my grail doll, and I still feel lucky to this day for being able to get her at the time. She was my third doll.

    50. Another love at first sight doll: Volks SD-F-26. She literally arrested me in my tracks: I was scrolling through Dollyteria's doll listings very fast, looking for something else. I blew past this listing of a girl doll with a custom faceup, went "whoa whoa hold up who did I just see??!!! Volks made a narrow-eyed girl?? I need to know who she is" and backpedalled to look at her. I don't know why hadn't noticed F-26 before, but now I saw a squinty-eyed, foxy girl in this custom faceup, and fell in love with that vision. I'd also been looking for a Volks doll to fall in love with, but despite looking at so many sculpts no one moved the needle... until F-26.

That custom F-26 on Dollyteria got sold, and I ended up ordering my doll from Volks FCS. I have my squinty, foxy girl and I'm thoroughly in love with her.

    51. Yeah F-26 is a favorite of mine. I fell in love with one owned by a long-time member who no longer lurks here. I even asked them if I could use their pics for my FCS order.

    52. The only doll I have had this feeling about was my Luts KDF Kai. He was also my first doll and introduction into bjds. Something about his sculpt just gripped me while I was scrolling through the luts site and I just knew I had to get him! So I saved up for about a month so I could buy him. Even after a year I still catch myself taking him out just to stare at his cute little face and snap some pics :D

I also ended up getting the romance version of Kai and now I am picking up the elf version. I really feel like I can never get enough of this one sculpt!

    53. Absolutely, Loongsoul's He Yi kicked off my entire BJD journey because I fell in love the moment I saw him. The irony is that he wasn't my first acquisition, not by a long shot — he's actually my most recent one as of right now! :XD: I missed out on his fullset by several years, but one just came up for sale secondhand, so now I can finally say that I own the one that started it all.

It's been love at first sight for pretty much all the ones I have, though, with very few exceptions. The sculpts I chose for my Resinsoul gang didn't wow me initially (the site's pictures don't do their work justice), but seeing owner pictures and learning about the customization completely changed my opinion. When they arrived, I adored them immediately, so I guess it was a roundabout love at first sight. Didn't love the "base" models the way I've loved sculpts from other brands, but absolutely loved the ones that were made just for me!

    54. When I first saw Dark Elf Soo as Ariel here on DoA it was love and first sight and knew I wanted her for my OC character. So when I got the funds I purchased her from Luts and she has been with me for 20 years.

    55. I also fell in love at first sight with the dragon. And then after months of worrying whether I'd love the real dragon as much as the pictures, I fell in love at first sight again when he finally arrived.

Also SartoriaJ's Jude, who I have two versions of and kind of impulse bought both of them. The human one because he was being discontinued and the elf one because he was limited time.

    56. Ooh, this is an interesting question... honestly, it would have to be the one that became my first BJD - my ResinSoul pup. The one in my icon. While I'd seen plenty of BJDs before then, it was finding this one that made me actually start putting the money aside properly to be able to get one. I still utterly adore him even now. Spoiled first child that he is.

    57. Iplehouse Bichun, he’s perfection.

    58. The Impldoll Plump body
I bought one with the Susu head the literal day it became available. (Thankfully for me that meant getting them on sale)

    59. Yes, definitely! Dream of Doll Ives was definitely my love at first sight. Sadly, I was a broke college student at the time, and by the time I graduated and was stable enough to purchase him, the company closed down...
