Los Angeles Dolpa Thread (Nov. 24 & 25th)

May 2, 2007

    1. I would most likely be taking a day or two to putz around LA when I come down. Nothing is definite yet until the dates are announced. I always to Halloween Haunt at Knott's during October, it's WICKED. Disneyland's Haunted Mansion Holiday is also a Must See, as is the Volks Store in Torrance. Keep in mind, it is ONLY open on weekends.

    2. Well yeah I was planning to either leave for LA Friday or Saturday the weekend before the dolpa and leave the day after the dolpa or fly down the day before and leave after the next weekend. It really sucks that the Volks store is only open on weekends =/ A week to sight see seems a bit much seeing as I will be missing a week of college but, meh.

I have been to disneyland for the christmas stuff but never seen anything halloween-ish. Makes me wonder if the dolpa will be late enough in November (it is november from what I heard, right?) that the christmas decorations will be up at disneyland.

    3. It would've made more sense for me to go to Dolpa NY, living in Massachusettes. Unfortunatly, I missed it. >_<' It just so happens that I'm insane enough to fly across all of tarnation to go to the LA Dolpa. X3

I'm not-so-secretly hoping they're going to be releasing second versions of Tsukasa Konoe and Jun Tachibana. They already did a Shiro ver. 2, so it's only right that they re-release his best buddy and sister! :3 Right?

I'm already starting to sell off some of my worldly possesions to make sure, if they are re-released, I have enough to get him... and numerous other dolls that I like.... So yeah, anyone wanna buy my house? XD Where would I keep the dolls if I had no house? (In a wagon attached to my tricycle to haul them around, of course.) ^^'

    4. Which dolls do you hope to see as one-offs at Dolpa LA? I'm so hoping to get a SD Liz as a one-off. =3

    5. Should I be able to attend, my dream One Off would be an SD16 Amelia:love
      ~Anthony

    6. Oh, man, I hope I can go...NYC was a blast and I love going to the LA area anyway. It's a trek and a half but if I travel all-carryon maybe they won't lose my frelling luggage this time. -_-;;

...and bring fewer dolls, because lugging 4 of them around anime expo is officially Not The Smartest Idea I've Ever Had.

I keep longing for/dreading a re-release of Tsukasa, but I have my doubts if they'd release him at a US dolpa. I'd lay my bets on another series of hoops to jump through like the Shiro after school version.

      We need a date!

    7. I'm going to dream big and hope for a white skin, large bust F-33 girl with a dark and elegant face-up...and that I win her. :3nodding: It'll keep me from having to order a Sato FCS of the same doll.

    8. Hmm... Toppi >=D I know there was a charity one-off Toppi in the NY dolpa, but I can't get enough of her so I wouldn't mind seeing another one ^-^!!

Umm... actually that's a hard question o.o;... I thought I'd be able to say lots but they're always so amazing that I don't really think I have a preference since no matter what it is... it'll be great :D

    9. Id like to see an SD16 Yukinojo one-off, a Lucas one-off, or a SD16 girl one-off.

    10. Yeah, what does Volks have against Yukinojo One Off's? I've never even heard of one:roll:... A Sunlight SD16 Yukinojo One Off would be beyond words amazing:drool
      ~Anthony

    11. Sunlight Kurumi or Sunlight Cyndy :D

    12. F26 boy.
Or, just give LA access to all the Sato molds for the Dolpa FCS.
      ;)
      Michelle

    13. Yes, we definitely do. NY Dolpa was indeed a blast and I'm excited and determined to make this event.

And I want a tan Lucas one-off. With long legs, since we're dreaming here.

    14. what about a wonderful Tsukasa.. I certainly won't miss this event as Volks really knows how to throw a party!

    15. A Yukinojo one-off would be cool, but I'd love to see a Madoka or Heath one-off more.

For now, I'd be super happy if they'd announce the date. Crossing my fingers.

    16. I'd love to see some Yo-SD one offs! Maybe Suzuna or Rengemaru! Or Chinatsu and Kuuta!

    17. I second this! I wish I could just walk in and make a FCS order for a tan F34 girl. The one at the NYDP was just amazing.

    18. I wish I could go as Dolpa NY was fun.

I would love a Toppi or Chinatsu one-off those I think would be my dream-one off

    19. I'll third it! It'll save me having to wish for a One Off, and I can decide the face-up!

I've been poking around at random convention centers in the LA area to see if they are booked for the Dolpa in November, but no luck. Maybe someone else could give it a try? If they're having it at a large hotel or a campus (like the NY Dolpa) then it might be impossible to find. It is getting to the point where not announcing the dates is rediculous. I need to know really soon so I can make shift trades! Those get difficult close to the Holidays. :(

    20. No kidding; it would be so much easier if they'd tell us sooner rather than later. As it is, there's a few dates that might be impossible now, but could have been worked around if Volks had announced the date in New York. I'm really hoping that I get to go- the tea last summer was so fun. And it'd be great if you and St. James could go, idrisfynn- I want to meet you two!

      I'm hoping for painting classes with a School C. And a B. ^^

    21. Boys. As long as they are BOYS I will be happy. I would ask for a YO, but they don't seem to do those at One Offs...

    22. I would love to get a school head B from a painting class. ;3

    23. I've only ever seen a Yo or two as One Offs in Japanese Dolpas. But YoSD One Offs are extreamly Rare:(
      ~Anthony

    24. A campus? Please, God, let it be held at UCLA! I live right next to it.

I highly doubt it. They only held it at FDQ, since they were in cahoots with the campus. UCLA is neither fashion nor marketing, so I doubt it. I think that the location will most likely be at a hotel or small convention center. Im hoping that this dolpa will still be like the smaller tea parties we all love so much, especially since BJDs are still so new to the US. I think almost everyone who wanted to go to the last LA tea party actually got in, so I doubt that the number of people attending would be over 250.

    25. I think they are going to allow in as many people as possible. You have to think of this dolpa like a convention. It's not a party, it's a sales room with classes. If they are flying over vendors, people would be pretty upset if they only let in X amount of people because those vendors wouldn't be making as much money. We had over 300 people at Dollectable, and I suspect that atleast twice that would probably show up at the dolpa.

    26. I can't wait to hear more firm details about this! I don't want to get too speculative and then end up disappointed, but I have little doubt that this event will be anything other than fun and enjoyable based on my experiences last summer in New York and LA (missed Halloween, missed the most recent NYC tea, and then missed the inaugural event in 2005). The Shigetas are genuinely lovely people.

That said, if I were to hope for anything, it would be a really beautiful Madoka who ended up going home with meee!! *_* I'd like to be suprised, I think. A doll who's all mod-groovy like Sher's new Anais from the NYC Dolpa would be appreciated! I'd still like a School C, I really like the new standard SD13 Elena (the fact that we share a namesake nothwithstanding, only Elena's my middle name and not my first), and I will even have blind hope for a pretty gal one-off using the Sato F34 mold. A girl can dream! Heh, I'd not even mind if there was absolutely nothing that I wanted because then that means more money for tacos in LA! Whoo!

    27. I think they'd be smart to have the Dollpa at a hotel or an actual convention center in LA.

Anyone think they'll partner with a hotel to offer us cheap rates??

    28. A hotel is cheaper to get than a convention center and considering it is the first time Volks is gonna try for a Japanese version of Dolpa, it's better to start out with. Plus it's more efficient to get a hotel for say 600 guests than a convention. It's easy to break even from. With a hotel, not all of them are union based like the LAX Hilton and they don't slap a fee for everything. Often the cost of the ballrooms and such include setups fees.

When it comes to, let's say, the Long Beach Convention Center, each room is like over 1K to use for a day, plus you gotta count the union fee and actual cost to have the workers there set up, fees to use certain equipment, fees to bring your own equipments... It just really builds up.

    29. Im still not counting out the possiblity of using the Long Beach Convention Center. Or maybe even a smaller venue near Torrance, California. President Shigeta has always been really optimistic and enthused about this coming dolpa. I wouldnt be surprised if he went all out just to show us how they do it in Japan.

    30. The Long Beach Convention center has a listing for all of their November events. The whole month is booked and none of the events have anything to do with dolls. Anyone want to tell me which are the smaller venues in LB so I can investigate?

    31. Daniel! If you go to the store this weekend, see if you can ferret out any more details about a possible date. I have two other trips I am holding off on until they announce theirs.

    32. Ive already asked, and usually the American workers at the store arent privy to the important details. Im sorry, but I will try again when there is another item/outfit release.

    33. To echo what most of my friends are wondering about, I'd wish Volks could announce the LA dates soon. I'm working on my vacation planning for the rest of this year. I'm certain it's going to be on a weekend, but it would be nice if they can inform us ASAP.

    34. I'm looking at all the convention centers and civic centers near Torrance. Closest one that is nearby is the Carson Center. Too bad on the Carson Center's website, they don't list the upcoming events for this year.

    35. Oi! I live right next to Carson! If this will be a somewhat medium dolpa [since its a stepup from a tea party but still a small dolpa], then the Carson civic center would be ideal! There is a hotel or two right next to it, so guests could stay there. Carson is not a busy city, and the convention center is in a good neighborhood and right next to the 405 freeway. Id love it if the Dolpa were held there!

    36. I want to go to the Dolpa LA. I hope they can more information later

    37. I'm fairly certain they wont annouce anything until September or so. Maybe August if we're really lucky but they tend to annouce most of their events less then 2 months in advanced.

    38. Hewitt or MSDF10. But mostly Hewitt.

I really really hope I can go to this one. I'm glad it's not for a few months so I can take the time to save, and not have to worry about who's going to cover for me while everyone else is on vacation.

    39. I'm hoping I can go since I'll be in New York for college, but might be able to sneak back for Thanksgiving *_*

It sucks because NY Dolpa happens when I'm back in Los Angeles, and LA Dolpa happens when I'm in New York (wtfmate??) :(

If I can dream, I'd want a Williams one-off.. :aheartbea or a Reisner XD But that's sooo far-off sigh. And maybe Tony, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I only like Tony because of his outfit, so we'll see... o,o

Hopefully the new standards will be available then too ^-^

    40. I am so excited about the dealers. They chose a pretty good venue too.

    41. Judging by the big pic of Olivia on the front page do you think she's the limited?

    42. I can't wait, its coming ohhhhhhhh I hope they have a new SD16 boy or 13 boy there. I can't wait to go. its going to be so much fun:D

    43. Booked a room at the hotel!
      :D :sumomo: :cheer

    44. I dont think they'd re-release her so soon. She is just kinda the "poster child" for American events since she is suppost to be American, ect.

Gosh I hope we might be able to go! I hear they are flying lots of people in in a huge Jumbo jet!:D

I also think japanese SD fans are invited as well, how exciting!
I cant even imagine all the goodies to be seen when the Dolpa marketplace opens! *drools*

      *Jen

    45. boy.... traveling on thanksgiving weekend will sure be fun. I'm not too pleased about that.

+goes off to kill a "volks" voodoo doll+

    46. Thanksgiving weekend has got to be one of the worst times. ARghhhh!! And I don't live in CA so travel would be an expensive major ordeal. Well saves me money in the long run if they want to do it that weekend. I'm out!! :(

    47. *sigh* WHY does it have to be Thanksgiving?

      Marcia.

    48. It is kinda funny they picked a holiday that people normally spend with their (non-resin :) ) families for this. I wonder if it'll hurt attendance.

    49. Did they consult no Americans when they made this date choice? A lot of people will have family obligations, to say nothing of the absolute HORROR of being anywhere near LAX on Thanksgiving weekend.
Nonetheless, as idrisfynn said, we're there! :)

    50. Oooh, this is so exciting, it will be my first.

    51. I'm so going to try my hardest to make it. GiantKiller it'll be my first too!

    52. OMG :D:D:D I'M SO glad it's on Thanksgiving weekend!!! I was really hoping it would be. My Grandma lives in the area so I can surprise her now since she's not really well enough to travel out of state for thanksgiving with anyone ^___^. Otherwise I'd have to skip school, and my parents would never go for that since they're the ones paying university tuition lol =p.

      omgomgomg *starts planning now* ^__^

I guess it might be inconvenient for some older members who have "family obligations" (luckily my family would totally understand since o_O I mean come on... it's July and that is quite a bit of notice ^^), but at least... it makes it more convenient for those who work and get holidays off xD;;? I dunno...

Well, I'm definitely giving my thanks already that there's an american dolpa that I can attend :D:D:D.

    53. Volks kills me. T___T I always spend Thanksgiving with my family, but this year I may have to bow out. I'm definitely going to try to go to this! x33 I've been wanting to go to this LA Dolpa since they first announced it, and I'm excited.

My only issue is funding. It'll be the 2nd time I fly out to Cali in that month, as I'm going to PMX November 11-14. =O

    54. Grrr... My best friend is getting married that weekend.

      >.< I'm going to the next one, I swear!

Everyone have fun and come back with lots of pictures!

    55. I was at the LA opening, but I haven't been to any other Volks event.

Getting the weekend right after Thanksgiving off is going to take serious sweet talk at work.:P I'm a buyer at a retail store and it's Black Friday weekend.

    56. Wow, Japanese guests have to pay for and arrange their own travel expenses and use the English site.

If participants are expected to do all of that, I'm wondering how many they're actually going to get, especially so soon after Doll Show and not that far before the big December Tokyo Dolpa.

    57. Can't believe they put it on Thanksgiving weekend. I really want to go to this one, but I'm not sure if things'll work out.

How much are usually the fees for Dolpas in US anyway? I could've sworn the last one in NY was only $20. Why the sudden price increase?

    58. Aw, man. There's absolutely no way I'm going to make this. Airfare's going to be silly expensive and we have too many obligations for Thanksgiving to possibly make this work. Damn it! Going to this Dolpa was how I was justifying missing out on the NYC Dolpa. Damn, damn, damn!

Ah well. You know they'll do something in LA again, and probably New York, too. I guess sometimes you just can't win, and sometimes you do win!

Yeah, I'm going to guess that there is not an American consultant working with them on the dates and location. Ai yai yai...

    59. Wow, that is quite an increase in price for entrance! For NY it was only $20. D:

I'm also amused that it's at the Hilton at LAX... as that is the exact location I'll be at for PMX too. XD

I agree with Kim, though, that there might not be many Japanese fans because they have to pay transportation, etc etc. It would still be very fun to meet those that did come~
