Looking for doll no-buy buddies

Aug 31, 2022

    1. I made it to my deadline of deciding if I was going to pre order the new DV Neil, aaannd I honestly didn’t even think of him till just now. I’ve decided to pass and we’ll see in six months if DDE has one in stock. Phew, I’m getting better at resisting, one doll at a time.

    2. Same.
DV put out a new teaser on Twitter, and I just... uuurrrggh. No. No new dolls.
It helps to visualize all the dolls I have already (and how much freaking space they take up).

I did discover that my local thrift store now has an "outlet" section where they sell stuff by the pound. As in, $0.99 per pound.
I snagged a leather jacket for $3. The lining is totally shot, and the leather is incredibly thin.
In other words, perfect for making doll-sized stuff.
Unfortunately, they only sell their costume jewelry in 50-pound containers. I saw a few doll-sized items of interest, but I do NOT need 50 pounds of more stuff in my house.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go soak a head off of a My Size Barbie.

    3. Fun! Any idea what you're going to make? Or still coming up with plans?

    4. I have several BJD-sized horses (I got the idea from MB Lilac) that I want to make tack for.
      The rest - shoooooooooes.

    5. Oooh! The horse tack sounds cool, but I'm super impressed with the idea of shoemaking. It's one of those doll hobby things that I find intimidating!

    6. I failed. I bought a body for my only floating head that I've had sitting in a box for 13 years. Of all the things to fail on, I think it was the best choice. He really needed it and I have no hope of bonding with just a head.

I really should look into this doll cobbler stuff! I've made some prototype geta for my SD and I haven't made her a real pair yet. I hate buying pleather shoes for my dolls because almost all of mine are cracking and gross and I don't want to replace them with the same future issue. :sigh

    7. It's okay, @nyaaain, it's tough not to buy, especially when you've found a body for a long-time floating head!

@MaleficentMrsofEvil I'll take a look and see if I'm brave enough to give shoemaking a try!

    8. Of the three temptations this month (so far) I’ve managed to keep strong. Exhausting! *_*

I should look into making shoes, it would keep me occupied and away from the internet. Just been so busy at work I don’t have much energy to do projects.

    9. That's OK. I failed too.
I already realized that the Dollmore Judith body I purchased is too small for what I need. So... sigh... I bought a full Zaoll Luv doll. It's the perfect height, and the head will be perfect for an SD body that is currently headless (a Supia body).
I'm going to have to do the receive-and-sell when the Judith body arrives, because I just don't need it.

This week, I am going to focus on making one pair of doll shoes (as cheaply and easily as possible), and I'm going to stop checking my pre-orders for a couple reasons:
The temptation to buy something else is too strong.
Nothing is going to arrive faster, just because I check on it.
ACBJD discounts stuff the longer it sits around. Items I paid full price for are now 30% off. That doesn't feel good.
      I am second-guessing my purchases (buyer's remorse).
I emailed all of the companies I have pre-orders with, and they all assured me I will receive an email before my dolls ship. So there is no reason for me to keep logging onto their websites to check the status of my orders.

The important thing is that I am learning. Baby steps!

Also - I only checked DOA MP and the #bjdsale tag on Instagram twice each this week. I think. (Mods, please don't correct me if I'm wrong, lol.)
As far as I'm concerned - that's a win. (I was checking both every day - sometimes multiple times a day.) This week, I'm going to track each time I check DOA MP or the bjdsale tag on IG in my planner. If you want to break a bad habit, first you have to know how bad it is, right?

    10. It's not failing. You fail if you completely give up.

I would see buying a body for a floating head as 'finishing up' something. You make an assessment of what you have, you take a practical approach to what you'd need to make some things/situations useful and part with things that aren't working. If you want to spend on your dolls you have to stop spending in other places.

Just went thru and started shifting things for seasonal clothes and stuff. The dolls will have some new clothes from ones that don't fit me but I'm too attached to to donate. Turned a pair of person sweat pants into a whole SD hoodie suit once.

*Edited afterthought- To help with constantly checking order statuses etc you need to redirect yourself. Whenever you have that urge get up (if you can) and go away from the computer. Walk around, get a drink of water, do something else.
You're bored and want something to do so give yourself something else, hopefully positive or productive to do.

    11. @DollyKim It was a very responsible failure! He's just a doll but I feel like I owe it to him after all these years.

@MaleficentMrsofEvil Very very rarely will a doll show up with no email warning! It's hard to forget about your purchases, but do your best! Maybe write a warning message to yourself in the future in a planner if you're worried about it taking over 6 months.

It might be because I am incredibly stingy, but every time I think of buying something I imagine how much money I'll lose selling it if I don't love it. The thought of losing money over it is painful and makes me want to buy nothing at all. When I view sales pages on the marketplace and Mandarake, I don't really feel temptation anymore except for very specific dolls. I'm not sure why that is. I can check constantly for months and months and get no real temptation.

I had a lot of dread buying this body for my floating head for the past 13 years because what if I bought it and it doesn't match at all? I don't want to spend a significant amount of money on a chance. I eventually decided it's never going to perfectly match, so "close enough" and a low price is going to have to work. I am glad I did it and I don't regret it.

      I do want to upgrade the body of my other boy, so here's to 13 more years of dread before purchase! He's gonna be 25 by then ;a;

    12. I'm ready to no-buy mini food prize balls, I tell you what.

Using how much something would be worth if it was sold, if it's not something like an investment designed for that, isn't the best mindset to approach many things with. It's good to spend wisely but you also need to ask yourself how much is said thing/experience worth to you and your peace of mind? For example I never regretted decided to pay doll prices for a quality colored pencil set after years and tears wondering why the budget brand I had been using since college wasn't working for me.

And all the money my dad was too cheap to spend on me when he was alive so I could have a decent pair of shoes for school, a backpack that wasn't broken, clothes without holes, I got when he was dead. I still have most of it but I also have some nice things that have made my daily life much easier.

    13. @DollyKim I don't quite mean it like that. I mean it more as a double check on how much I want it. If I'm 100% sure I want this item in my life as long as it'll last, price doesn't matter so much. Save up and spare no expense!

The hesitation comes from things I'm on the edge about. I hate selling things so I'm much more likely to keep it at that point. It'll just be a total loss to buy something that doesn't work out doll wise.

Things like necessities just have to happen. Dolls aren't any sort of necessity though. You can compare them to the nicest set of colored pencils but not so much to destroyed shoes and worn down clothes. We all need to worry about those things first for ourselves and our families before indulging in hobbies.

    14. @nyaaain It's okay. I come from a long line of people who don't seem to understand money in one way or another and have worked hard to teach myself balance. I didn't want a miserly mindset to keep you from enjoying something.

I just bought a doll yesterday, a clothes, shoes, hands and all first gen Monster High from a junk store so she only half counts, might flip her, might reroot her. I also passed on quite a few others so I feel pretty good. I'm also doing well on the no more random surprise balls but I also haven't gone out to pay bills and adult and want to treat myself.

    15. Oh, oops, I was just not buying bjds, well to be precise: on topic to doa bjds. The loophole is too big!

I’ve had some stress this past few weeks (oh boy, here’s the excuse), and I have a real weakness for Nendoroids, especially Nendoroid heads on articulated bodies, so…I decided to get Link another body (and outfit) that was the correct size. Now that I had a unused body, I needed a new Nendoroid head (and outfit) for it. It just snowballed! Then to finish off the buying mess, I got some designer blind box toys that I don’t need, but gosh are they cool. Happy, but still shaking my head. :eusa_naug

    16. My weaknesses include fabric, more fabric, doll food and doll school supplies. I'm currently eyeing an Our Generation pizza set. Thankfully, I'm currently in the phase of "I want to look" more than "I want to buy"

      • x 1
    17. If you look more than you buy then you're on top of things.
~says the person who rewarded themselves for adulting by buying a BJD doll sized version of their purse so they can be twinzies~
As much as I could buy Our Generation stationary for my BJDs the inconsistent scale turns me off. I'd rather pay a craftsperson to make doll sized versions of the things I use.

    18. I will say I did very well last week xD

I spent my down time at work making a data sheet on AirTable to inventory all my dolly purchases. I thankfully haven't found out how to get it to total up my "money spent" category so I can be in denial for a little longer lol.

Got some eyes in for Khafra (I bought 3 pairs, but they were only 10$ a piece so whhhhhhhyyyyyy noooooooot he wanted options). Laughed at the follow-me eyes that make him look like a cross-eyed chicken from the front. Khafra was not amused.

I'm still waiting for an order I put in Etsy at the beginning of August for some wigs and eyes for my other two BJD. Duan Duan is out getting her glow-up so I'm not concerned about her half of the order. But I can't attempt to do pretty photos of Leander if I don't have his proper wig and eyes. The seller marked it as "pre-transit" at the beginning of September and it's still sitting there. And my anxiety just makes me check it like 3 times a day instead of messaging them to see what's up so *flails arms*

I also did not check the Marketplace for dollies at all this week! I did check in-stock dolls at a couple dealers, but since there's a slim to no chance that my short short (single doll) list is in there, I'm safe. I also resisted that single doll once, so I feel fairly confident I can do so again.

I did check the clothing/accessories section of the Marketplace a couple times but that's not dolls so I consider it a win. Leander still wants some clothes that work in his style.

Plans for this week? Check out some tutorials on photography so when Leander finally gets those pieces I can Do Things. Avoid those pictures of the new DV Horseman cause he's gorgeous but he's static-face and I shall resist temptation. I don't care if he's a pony and I love ponies. I am happy with my crew I need no more. Plan next steps for Khafra's outfit. Plan what Leander needs. Look up grunge-ifying tutorials to make his clothes more lived in.

Look up a pattern for t-shirts to fit 73cm boys. Tutorials for doing heat-transfer vinyl. Cause craft supplies don't count against doll no-buy, riiiiiiggggghhhhhhtttt??? xD

    19. I need this thread hardcore in my life right now. After all my layaways are paid off I need to go on a spending freeze, period - at least from buying dolls. I thought my patience would be far better considering my experience with kickstarters, but after rushing out to get the first doll... oof.

So I definitely want to get more into creating accessories and jewelry, and learning how to sew clothes, especially for these bigger dolls (lookin' at you, Granado Titan body...) Eventually I'd like to make some cosplays for my dolls too. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread!

    20. Really need to do this myself too. Not just doll stuff, but figures too. I've bought too many recently and the Nendoroids are calling to me...

I have plenty of stuff I'm already waiting for, so I am trying to be satisfied with that. For dolls, I am waiting for two heads to come back with face-ups/mods. Waiting for a 1/3 scale Victorian couch from Etsy, and some toys/tiny plushies for one of my off topic dolls (he is a baby skeleton and I love him). And 3 Nendoroids (Papyrus and Sans from Undertale and Prushka from Made in Abyss), but their release dates aren't until December and January and none of them is a tiny Eren Yeager (I just recently started reading/watching Attack on Titan several years late and since it is so popular there is so much merch and it is a trial not buying any).

I really need a hobby related to my collecting that doesn't involve buying more stuff. Maybe I can start drawing again or something. Got stuff to sell too, but it's such a hassle...

      • x 5
    21. Well, I didn't buy anything new, but I did just find out a couple of my layaways have arrived at the dealer and paid them off because I am only good at patience up to the point where I know I could have it NOW.

I also cleaned off a couple of half-finished faceups that I had stopped working on because I got frustrated and wasn't happy with them. They're on dolls I'm not sure I want to keep, so I'm debating on whether I should try new ones once the humidity is on my side or just take pictures and see if someone else wants them. (They're very cute! But I've learned that child-like dolls just aren't For Me)

      • x 3
    22. If you don't get along with the doll ain't no problem seeing if someone else will, and it you'll have money for dolls you want.

I wish I could be like that with my on topics but so far all of them who have come in have stayed.

      • x 5
    23. Sigh. I have a task I've been putting off for months, and I can't put it off any longer.
So what have I been doing? Scrolling through the marketplace and IG bjd sales tags, of course...
Not the healthiest substitute, but I bought snacks instead.

No progress on making shoes, but I did snag some Vallejo airbrush paints per @Ara's recommendation, and I'm looking forward to trying those out on my DV Rita (that I got the stringing video for - posted a tutorial in Workshop). Mantis dolls don't need shoes anyways.

I don't know about anyone else, but right now, I'm trying not to buy anymore BJDs. Other stuff is still up for grabs, because I'm much pickier about nonBJD stuff. Although there is one doll on MP, and if the seller agrees, I'm going to snag it - it will let me complete a set for a floating head.

      • x 5
    24. Yeah, I too am checking back to report that I bought 2 bodies for floating heads, and a kitchen set for a project for my mini kids. If I'm paying a credit card bill every month, that's not success for me, as I only buy doll stuff with credit (and always pay it off before the bill comes due!). But, the bill has been much lower, and with this last body- no more floating heads. I don't see myself buying more large props as there's storage to consider. I'm doing better, but not great. I'll check back next month- hopefully with no payments due!!
      :vein:doh:eusa_naug

    25. No more on topic dolls is something I am pretty sure I can do. There is an off topic body type-skin tone combo I still need but they literally have to make more so I'm stuck waiting.

Better is always a good thing. I watched some videos on setting healthy achievable goals yesterday to refresh myself on how to go about changing habits and it starts with small steps and acknowledging and being happy as you make them. Not making your goals and having set backs isn't the end of the world, you admit to them, promise yourself you will try better, and continue to work towards your goals.

With gift season approaching we will all face temptations and we will all do our best!

      • x 4
    26. I'm going to have to jump in on this too!

I just paid off two layaways for a total of 5 dolls purchased in a year :( I really need to build up my savings so I'm going to hold off on buying more dolls for at least a year. I gotta stay strong!

      • x 6
    27. Welcome! I'm in a similar boat to you, I bought a lot this year and am trying not to buy more.

You can do it! And, even if you do end up buying more, it only becomes a true failure if you give up.

      • x 4
    28. So I feel like a fraud for scrolling through MP and Mandarake, but also - I really appreciate sales pictures of used dolls. There's a lot less, um, "enhancement" in most sales photos. For example, I saw a Granado Nuevo body for sale recently. I was kinda kicking myself for not getting one, but when I saw the sales picture, I felt a lot better about choosing the Embody instead.

What I do want to say is this - please please please don't feel guilty about buying a doll or shopping for dolls because of me or this thread. I'm not tracking anyone (hope no one is tracking me!), and I don't want ANYONE to miss out on a doll due to some sort of fear of being judged. And I don't want anyone to feel like I'm trying to "hoard" limited dolls for myself by creating this no-buy thread. This has been on my mind a lot lately... Maybe I'm just creating a problem where there isn't one - but I wanted to put it out there.

Although not BJD-related, last night I made a promise to myself and spouse: I have 3 IKEA Detolf display cases. I have decided to clean them out and pick the total amount of Barbies and Barbie-sized dolls that I want to display in them. If the dolls don't fit - they're going. I'm either selling or giving the rest away, but they MUST go.

BJDs are going into my office on bookshelves.

I need to make space because I have an old Barbie castle that I'm painting (for pictures!), and right now, I have no place to work on it.

Still having a fantastic time with baby's first airbrush. Spouse recently got a fancy new 3D PLA printer, and we're going to try upscaling a Thingiverse BJD into a 3-foot (one meter) tall body for a My Size Barbie I found at a thrift store ($10!!!). I'm also going to try to printing 3D bigger bodies for a couple LOL OMG and Rainbow High heads, because I am not a fan of bobbleheads. Might even make bigger bodies for Pulip and Blythe heads I have - sacrilege, I know.

    29. @MaleficentMrsofEvil all of your projects sound like fun! I love hybrids of all kinds. They are your dolls, do what makes you happy!

I saw the new Soom petite gem tiger, and I’m like meh. I normally would have placed my order, lol. It took almost a year, but I’ve finally reached the point where bjds just don’t excite me anymore. All of the frustration of finding eyes, wigs, shoes, and clothes has reached the point that now when I look at a bjd, all I can see is the frustration of ‘finishing’ it. I still have plenty of dolls that need something, and I have no motivation to do anything about it right now (the cost of shipping is awful). All of my free time has been with tiny, OT dolls that are easy to sew for, and find all their stuff. I’m so happy to be saving money again!

Yeah, I don’t want anyone to think I’m acting superior or judging anyone. This took me years to finally reach the point of bjd exhaustion. Not saying I will never buy again, but I’m hoping it’s a very long time. I’m focused on collecting other things that give instant satisfaction with no long to-do list before they look decent. Boy, am I tired.

    30. I'm also kinda getting to the point where, how do I put this? A lot of the dolls are starting to look the same to me. And yet - my little gremlin brain screams "WANT!"

Maybe it's just how the dolls are constructed. It was something I noticed when I first got into the hobby, too. It seems like BJDs all tend to veer on the soft, feminine side (Doll Chateau, some Dollzone dolls, and Dream Valley being exceptions off the top of my head). A lot of the new Soul Dolls are pretty, but to me, they look like different colors of the same doll.

Which of course makes Dream Valley a huge weakness, lol.

    31. I had this when I was into some art-RPG groups over on DeviantArt. The "it's only slightly different, so it's not really important that I get another" but still every single time a new one would come up my brain would go "WANT!" and. It was horrible for my wallet. I am very glad I am out of that new new new new trap, and that I haven't fallen into it with BJDs so far. Even though it is far, far too tempting.

And don't get me started on the dolls all looking the same. xD I'll suffice to say that as a general rule, I agree with you wholeheartedly lol. Especially about DV hehehe.

    32. @MaleficentMrsofEvil you are not a fraud! And neither is anyone else on this thread, whatever happens. There's no shame in looking at sales - whether you end up buying or not. <3 I haven't gotten the impression from you, or anyone here, that there's any judgment for buying something you're really excited about. I know I've still been browsing, mostly to see if I can find a couple heads/bodies I've been looking for over the years to wrap up one group of dolls and if I found them I'd buy them.

I know what y'all mean about a lot of BJDs blending together, visually. I still love looking at all the new dolls, but fewer and fewer actually excite me enough to buy beyond that initial "ooh, pretty thing, must own" impulse. Having you lovely folks helps me curb that impulse so, when/if there's something I really want, I'll feel better about buying it.

    33. So how are we all doing on the no-buy? I am still buying occasional fabrics that are for doll projects but other than that I'm finally achieving my necessary goals of not buying dolls or doll stuff :dance(Fabric is craft supplies! And at this point crafting is my only survival mechanism) This has been a long time coming, I'm pretty proud of this, which is a nice thing to have :XD:

Recently I was angry at my Bobobie Pandora and wanted to buy her a different wig from Amazon (which has become my resource for budget hair when it will really make a difference for me) but instead I just added some decoration to a wig I had gotten her in the spring for cheap and I'm very tickled with how much it improves her appearance for me:

Anyone have any little victories they are feeling proud of? I personally think focusing in this way is the best motto for achieving a difficult goal over time. I relate very much to also having fallen into the habit of looking at doll sales even when I kind of wasn't interested in buying, it was a self-soothing activity more than anything. I didn't buy a lot but I felt happy about bringing home something special on occasion, which was fine at the time. Looking at stuff that is pretty or gives me new ideas makes me feel better, but then it started cycling around too often into stress and negative feelings, so in the last couple months something has changed for me there and I've stopped looking at sales anywhere too. It's very much about shifting your focus and also about really committing to whatever your priority really is.

    34. @MaleficentMrsofEvil Don't worry, I'm still going to buy the next doll that makes my heart dokidoki! Just as long as very very few make me dokidoki I'll be okay.

@AlisonVonderland The faceup on your girl is so striking!! I really like what you did with her.

My update: I haven't bought anything since the body that I really should have bought 13 years ago. I did make a yukata for my (not) new boy though! Now I feel like I should have made him a black vkei kimono instead. And I don't have to buy anything for it because my sewing hoard is already bigger than my storage area. Back to the sewing machine!

      • x 4
    35. Thank you @nyaaain her Faceup was very intentionally over the top :XD:
I think it's pretty great you could finally get a body for that old floating head though. I always felt so proud in such a moment, to accomplish it after a long time. Hope you have fun sewing :aheartbea

    36. Well, already overspent this month. But I have three vintage lovelies coming, and I can't wait!

PS: @alison You girl is stunning! OoAK and full of character! My boys would want a pin-up of her, lol!

    37. Well, if your bills are paid and your quality of life isn't suffering then how you spend the rest of your money really isn't anyone else's business. But if you have a rainy day fund, try not to tell your car about it, you will thank yourself. Even if the intention is to spend that money on a doll the more you have in it the bigger doll you can get.

It's always great when you can look at something you already have and make it over, can I please see another Yew Chube commercial for that? Jim Henson always said 'Take what you've got and fly with it'.

Maybe we should have an unofficial 'junk drawer' contest where you post a picture of something you want to make over for your doll(s) and the supplies you have at hand to do it. There's room to buy sewing thread or replace dried out paint or glue but otherwise no new supplies, only what's pictured.

    38. OK - I am hard cutting myself off of any new dolls. Anything new, I've decided, will have to be sculpted by me - which means learning how to sculpt, figuring out a good resin blend, and getting my Mighty 8k actually set up, not to mention the IPA refresh I sorely need...

I capped myself at 20, but in my overzealousness, have gotten up to 21. :doh I definitely need to slow down, or rather go cold turkey completely. I'm thinking of planning a minimal-buy year for next year anyhow. It might behoove me to start a serious project journal - I've been contemplating long about how to adapt regular knitting and crochet patterns to doll sizes, jewelry-making, dyeing, learning how to sew... not even starting on the writing aspect -- world building and developing characters.

So - a lot to contemplate, especially while waiting for dolls to arrive. I'm hoping that refocusing into creating will scratch this... itch, whatever you wanna call it.

    39. Making a doll is like making pancakes.

Before you get ahead of yourself with the resin, unless you have experience, just take the time to play with the form. I'd recommend the Yoshida method and for an air dry clay Prang DAS is on the budget side but works great and Creativ Paperclay works good. You'll want white unless you want everything you touch to turn a lovely shade of terra cotta.

As for knitting and crochet there is How to Use, Adapt, and Design Knitting patterns by Sam Elliot, no reason it shouldn't work in crochet, which I used to make a few designs for my boys.

    40. You can go even cheaper and make cold porcelain (an air-dry clay) with cornstarch, mineral oil, white glue, and a dab of cheap moisturizer. Your doll may or may not last very long, but cornstarch is pretty cheap.

    41. @Valdemagra ahhh haha you made me laugh :XD: of all the flirtatious dolls I might have I think this one is so serious and aloof, she would glare me out the door if I asked her to be in a pin up. But thank you <3 I enjoy her a lot.
And I hope you enjoy all the cool new dolls. You'll just have to make up the difference later!

    42. I think I might delve into doing some doll jewelry making to help distract me. I haven't done any jewelry stuff in a loooong time, but I kind of feel like it'd be a disservice to a lot of my more recent doll acquisitions to cover them up with clothes and they need to be adorned somehow.

    43. Do it @Sozael ! Jewelry making is so much fun! I don't even do anything complicated but I love it. :D

    44. Experience has taught me with doll making, and many other arts and crafts, cheap ends up being thrown out the window. Unless you know you have a learning curve with a lot of trial and error decent quality supplies are always your friend. I will say on the doll making side if you come from a background of polymer clay then by all means go that route. If you're experienced in wax or 2 part apoxy that will work too. I have tried and half succeeded with several mediums. Did make some 1/6 scale heads that have lasted many years and I never regretted the money spent on their supplies.

As for doll jewelry I would very much like to see that. Several of my on topics have pieces they wear all the time, one was a gift because it was perfect for the doll.

    45. (I wrote a book.)

@DollyKim makes a great point - "cheap" hobbies tend to get very expensive, very fast. After a lifetime of "Ooh! Imma try this!" followed by buying all the things, only to realize I wasn't really into it, I have a new rule for starting or incorporating a new craft/hobby: Start small and as cheap as possible. That way, if the new craft/hobby doesn't work out, I can declutter and re-gift to someone else with little to no worry (guilt) of loss due to a massive up-front investment.

I realize that if you drop $X00+ dollars/Euros/yen/won/pesos/etc. on a doll, it seems silly to buy cheap watercolor pencils/acrylic paints/pastels, but that's exactly what I did. I wanted to be certain that it was something I wanted to do, and most importantly, was willing to keep doing before I purchased more expensive materials. When I decided to try my own face-ups, I purchased clearance pastels, paintbrushes, and the cheapest airbrush I could find. Same with glues, jewelry, etc.: I buy the cheapest, smallest amount of stuff I need. I also scour local social media listings for free stuff FIRST. My first sewing machine was free. Most of my fabric and notions were free or extremely cheap from other folks' decluttering. I got ten 13-gallon trash bags and a shoe box full of FREE knitting supplies and yarn. A lot was donated to a local knitting group, but I kept stuff I liked.

I have since purchased a better compressor, Pan Pastels, and nail art paintbrushes. The difference is delightful. Also, I was tired of wiping company face-ups that I'd paid for, but that's another story... A few cheap sewing classes (thank you, Groupon), and I grabbed a clearance electronic sewing machine. These purchases are investments in hobbies I know I enjoy (but I still prefer lower-priced options).

I bought another doll, sigh. I was sad and having a bad day, so I got a doll I'd been pining after: a Resinsoul Ya head on the new Shi body, BUT (small win) I did not use layaway. I was able to pay straight cash. All past layaways are paid off. I'm proud of myself because one credit card is *completely* paid off, and that zero balance is creating a mental block against spending. I love logging in and seeing $0.00 balance. The idea of having to pay it off again - I don't wanna.

I created a list of pre-order dolls that I am waiting for, and after filing my taxes, I've decided it's time to adult and tally up everything I've spent on BJDs since I joined the hobby. It's going to hurt mentally, but it needs to be done. I'm also going to track credit card spending like it's my checking account. Credit cards feel like "free" money, because the funds don't come out of my checking account right away. (I can hear you all cringing. It's okay. I'm sharing in case anyone else is like me.) I'm going to treat it like a checking account: if/when I charge something, I am creating an immediate plan of when it's going to be paid back.

More adult stuff: I was talking to Spouse the other day about what to do with all of my dolls should I die before Spouse, prompted by seeing someone donate valuable stuff that ended up on Shopgoodwill.com. Granted, Goodwill is going to make some good money, and we have life insurance to cover all current pending debts if I die first (plus leftovers), but it pains me to see that someone's family lost a lot of money because they didn't know what to do with the deceased collector's valuable collection (potentially thousands of dollars). I'm working on my Airtable database of dolly stuff for Spouse to use for estate planning/liquidation purposes. I'm also going to put post-it notes on the few big boxes I'm keeping, so Spouse knows which box goes with what doll.

Story time: a family whose grandparent was a professional dollmaker reached out to me on Facebook after said dollmaker died, offering to ship the ceramic doll molds for the cost of shipping only. I didn't recognize the name, but I asked if they'd contacted a doll collector group, because I suspected those molds might be worth a small fortune. Never did hear back from the family, but I saw an expensive estate auction for a famous dollmaker a few months later. (Helen Kish? Someone like that.) Probably not a coincidence, and If I hadn't spoken up, the family might never have known...:aeyepop:

FYI: I'm going to start a new "Project Journal" thread in Brigadoon to help me with what I'm calling "5 minutes of happy." I am an office worker (remote) now, and there are periods when I'm waiting for a report to complete, or I'm stuck in the most boring meeting in the world (listening to other people read their $%*&ing emails RAAAAAAHHHHH :x:evil:), and I want to multi-task, or I need a 5-minute brain break, but I can't walk away from the computer. Right now, I'm back to scrolling dolls for sale, which is NOT helpful when I want to commit to this doll no-buy.

    46. @MaleficentMrsofEvil I both love and hate the idea of tallying up how much I've spent on dolls/for dolls. It's a smart thing to do, but I'm also certain it's way more than I'd like to admit to myself.

My credit card rule is that (barring absolute emergencies) only what I can pay off the month that I buy it, I mostly use it to get cash back points rather than paying straight from checking. (But I also understand that I'm super privileged to be able to approach it that way! Creating a plan to pay it back when you spend sounds like a great idea. :) )

    47. @MaleficentMrsofEvil - I applaud your transparency here! It's great to know where your temptations are and what to do about them, and your experiences may help others trying to manage their situations.

I scroll the bjdsale tag on Instagram quite a lot myself, but since I'm insanely picky (a situation good for my wallet but bad for my frustration with the hobby levels) I almost never buy anything; I just enjoy looking at the pictures.

I was thinking about your "five minutes of happy" idea and wondered if you might find it helpful to create Pinterest boards or something similar to gather inspiration for your current dolls (or those you plan to purchase in the future). That way instead of scrolling things that are being sold, you might spend your five minutes looking at color palettes, types of clothing (even if not bjd clothing), photos from movies/TV shows, etc. that echo something about your characters, and collect them in a sort of mood board to refer to later. I really like Pinterest for this (although I'm on a desktop which makes it pretty easy to pin all kinds of images - it might be more challenging on a phone). I have collected hundreds-thousands of images and photos for my stories and characters and feeling that spark of inspiration - the potential for a character/story to grow - is even more fun than seeing something I might want to buy.

Anyway, it is just a thought! Keep up the good work! And good luck with adding up your expenses.

EDITED TO ADD - I just saw your other thread on the "five minutes" and realized you already had in mind what I suggested. OOPS X) Anyway, it sounds like a good idea and I hope you can find a good platform for it! Pinterest is great for images but not good for keeping notes, so I'll un-recommend that one!

    48. Can I join? I'll be going more stringent - while I'm not tempted to buy resin, I am tempted to window shop for resin and non-resin stuff.

I generally have pretty good self-control and have no urge impulse buy. And even if I did want to impulse buy, I can't because the abysmal currency exchange rate between Australian dollar (I live in Aus) and USD is putting a hard ceiling on how much I can buy without ruining my finances. I don't want to be frivolous with my money when literally half of it is evaporating when it exchanges from AUD to USD.

But I catch myself window-shopping, sometimes for hours. To me, this is a grand waste of time: I'd rather use the same hours to do things with my dolls -- even do other things/hobbies entirely -- instead of window-shop and dream up wishlists that I'll never act on anyway. Plus, window shopping like this has the unpleasant and unwanted effect of making me dissatisfied and envious. I'm actually quite contented with the dolls and doll stuff I have, I have a lot of joy when I'm playing with them, changing their outfits, doing photoshoots. But window shopping for stuff I can't/won't get kinda spoils all of that, it just makes me focus on what I don't have instead of what I do have.

So I'm here - not for "resin no buy", but for "resin no look"! Not sure yet how I'll do this, but I might set myself a timer - every day for 30 minutes I can window shop for resin and BJD non-resin stuff to my heart's content, but once the timer goes off - I gotta do something else, like y'know, spend time with my doll crew!

    49. I had the combination of growing up dirt poor and seeing my share of anything that could be considered hobby money spent elsewhere. I grew up thinking I could never do half the stuff I saw because art supplies were expensive and out of reach so I didn't get any real practice until college and even then I had to twist arms to get the most basic supplies the teacher required.

On the buying an inexpensive kit to try a hobby there are some good ones. I started metal stamping with the kids kit they sell at the box store, and added a few blanks, that satisfied me for a good time until I decided I wanted to step up a level and slowly added a few things. I've also been thru a few kits in my life that helped me to decide it was not something Tiggers liked best.

I set a price threshold for a "curiosity kit" when I want to try something. I have a goal project(s) in mind and have a general idea where I'm going to put the thing. If things don't work out hopefully there's some family member or kid I can pass it on to. Im only out a bit of money and my curiosity is satiated.

    50. The more, the merrier. I'm down for no-look. If I no-look, I no-buy!

    51. i'm following this thread now because i'm on a (somewhat involuntary) no-buy. i genuinely don't want to keep endlessly growing my doll collection, but i do have a head that i would very much like to buy a body for. she's a character i'm really attached to, that i made up years before i even knew bjds existed, and i wanted the head i have for her for a couple years before i was able to get it this summer. there's also a body i'd like to buy for a head i want to sculpt, because i'm a bit too intimidated at the idea of sculpting a whole body with all the joints and such...but i was really excited about the idea of the whole project.

unfortunately some crappy, expensive life stuff has happened in the last 2 months and it's changed my finances so that buying any resin is likely out of the question for some time. even tho my no-buy is not necessarily by choice, reading thru this kind of made me feel better about the disappointment/frustration i have at needing to wait to complete my floating head girl or start the other doll project, and a lot of the suggestions here are good for when i'm tempted to stew and be sad about it even tho there isn't any ability for me to break the no-buy.

    52. Alrighty... so I crunched the numbers for my current layaways. And let me tell you, it was extremely sobering to see. I'm glad I sat down and laid it all out, and I'm eager to finish everything out, but MAN. Even if it is spread over 9 months, it's still a lot! And that's just the dolls -- that's not even counting accessories or cons.

Just having the numbers there available to see will hopefully be a temptation-crusher for me for anything additional. Now's the time to put a stranglehold on those purse strings!

I think doing a no-look will help curb the temptation to even add anything to your cart. Out of sight, out of mind as the saying goes. I know for me it was extremely helpful every time a big sales holiday came around so I could unsubscribe to all the mailing lists I'd been inadvertently added to.

    53. And then you decide you're done throwing good money at an old car, if it's just the battery that's one thing, and decide to actively look for a less old one.

And before you make a jointed body you make one without joints. If you sculpt them at the same time they'll be in proportion to each other. I keep forgetting I have a truck load of doll making books of all kinds and pretty much all of the Yoshida style-BJD making ones for beginners and the Becoming a Doll Artist ones have you make the doll in one piece, or arms separate, cut it apart, add the joints, then copy those forms in one way or another for a finished doll.

    54. Thanks for the support! And I hope that I can stay strong, I really only bought that many because this has been my first year in the hobby, so I constantly had the desire to add to my collection. But I feel like my little crew is at a good spot right now, so hopefully it won't be too difficult to hold off on doll purchases for a while!

    55. Well, my "resin no-look" / no windowshopping goal has been working out so far.

I've leaned into doll photography, so the planning, shooting, editing, and then sharing the photos onto the Internet (so far just to my blog and DoA) has kept me plenty busy. It's been super fun to get my dolls to pose for me, and while not every photoshoot has yielded good photos, it's still been rewarding overall. I've also started learning how to paint faceups -- there was an upfront investment to get the materials, but I had so much fun doing my first faceup that I want to keep doing it. So all of that has been keeping me busy enough.

Something else has helped, and it was pretty unexpected... I've been cooking up a new character I want to shell in a doll, but at first no sculpt was grabbing my eye, no matter how much I looked. This was kinda weighing at the back of my head, and just driving me to keep windowshopping dolls and dealers -- and fuelling that dissatisfaction (which I mentioned in my post above). But I've finally stumbled on the sculpt (Kanadoll Mars) that would be perfect for the character. Now that I have a shell for this character, my urge to windowshop for resin has completely gone away. So, ironically, finding the doll I DO want to buy next, has stopped me from looking at yet more dolls. Somehow that worked out!

    56. @aihre - wonderful! I hope you don't mind, but every time I find myself looking at DOA marketplace, I think of you and promptly close the browser window. I've also been asking myself, "Why am I looking? If I see something I want, I'll just be tempted to spend money." That helps too.
Now I'm also avoiding the BJD News section. Too tempting...

    57. Ah I don't mind, and I'm glad I'm inspiring someone and helping you to stick to goals. ^^

      So much this.
You may already know this, but DoA's main index page (the one that lists all the subforums) is split into sections, and you can collapse those sections so you don't see the forums inside. It's the + (plus) sign on the right side of the forum list. Click the + and the section collapses down until you open it back up.... so you can collapse the News and Marketplace sections completely so their subforums disappear. You can still get to all the subforums through the top header bar, so they are not completely inaccessible, but maybe a bit of 'out of sight, out of mind' on the index page might help to deter idle clicking and browsing... something I do A LOT of. XD

    59. I'm going to do a No Doll November this year. No doll purchases of any kind for the whole month. One part of this is logging out of DOA and staying off social media.

      Wish me luck!
