I apologize for the necroposting a bit, though I'm curious about how to resize patterns? I saw a tutorial on paper patterns but how would it work on pdfs? Is there a better dimension/size to cut for mnfs? Thank you so much!
I thought I'd add a few (mostly) Etsy stores that sell sewing patterns you can buy to the list, just to give people more resources! HighEndDollsPatterns - Etsy 1/3 and 1/4 LuminariaDesigns - Etsy A LOT of patterns DollCandy - Etsy Multiple sizes KitNKatShop - Etsy Mostly SMD patterns, but they can likely fit other 1/3 girls (and a few MNF ones) JauneyeroID - Etsy MNF girl patterns! I have used the more "unisex" ones with some slight tweaks for my motion line boy, too (jeans, t-shirt) MyLittleDollStory - Etsy Again mostly SMD but a few MNF patterns as well Requiem Art Designs I'm sure she's been linked before, but a TON of patterns in a TON of sizes, most of them quite beginner-friendly View Tutorials & Patterns PDF by WhisperingGrassBJD on Etsy Most of the patterns are for shoes, but she also sells a few jeans patterns! Just as a note, be careful buying patterns off of Etsy, especially for dolls popular in Japan--there's a lot of people who sell digital scans of magazine patterns, and not all of them are very good quality/are hard to print because they have no scales on them (leaving aside the copyright issue, even). They're usually pretty easy to spot, though, and will mention having Japanese instructions or that the instructions were translated most of the time (a big clue). The instructions are more or less the same when doing it digitally, if not a bit easier. Dal Rae sells her instructions now, and I believe her process is largely digital (I haven't looked for a while). Most of the instructions rely on taking the doll's measurements to know how to scale, so you'd want to start there! Generally speaking, Minifee work well at 1/4 of human scale (since they have more relatively human adult-ish proportions). Hope that helps you a bit! Resizing/scaling patterns does require a bit of fiddling, so try not to get too frustrated when that happens. It's all part of the process!
Random question, I went to volks In Japan recently and purchased their pattern books! But what happened to volume 2? It seems very rare and sold out.
Here's a website I hadn't seen mentioned yet. She's added some new patterns recently. Beth Alvarez's website. She writes fantasy novels, but also posts free BJD sewing patterns: Sewing Patterns for Ball-Jointed Dolls
What I do with PDF patterns is just go to the page that has the cutting layout, zoom in until it's in scale with my doll, and then trace it from my laptop screen onto parchment paper. You can determine whether you've got the right size by holding up your doll to the screen, by comparing another pattern piece or clothing you know fits, or by measuring the size on your screen with a physical tape measure. You can also try scaling the PDF to 25%/33% and tracing the pages that you're supposed to cut out, but I found it hard to keep the paper at the right angle, so the pieces were crooked and didn't line up properly.
I was bored, so I decided to collect all the still-working links in this thread, and add a bunch more links I didn't see mentioned anywhere. Hi folks, Cleared out some of the posts that only had dead links and some extraneous chat so this thread will be easier to source working pattern materials. If anyone has new material or knows where some of the lost links have gone, post away! And happy sewing!
Don't forget to turn on English/your language subtitles. This will require a little bit of adjustment for a doll, depending on your doll's size. The way he just picks up two spots at the end to reveal a perfect trapeze dress with no sewing is just magical.
This takes a bit more work than the no-sew version, but definitely worth it. Again, don't forget to turn on subtitles for your language.
