LatiDoll Yellow discussion Part 1

Kate- thank you so much. I really like that, though it is darker than I'd like. At least it's a warm dark. Dillon had a dark wig for a while that was kind of on the cool side and it didn't look good with Lati NS, IMO. Is that one the first or second one I referred to? Or something else? Wish northern VA wasn't quite so far, or I'd drive up and check out your wig sale and pinch those cutie Lati cheeks! (It's true, I'm a cheek pincher.)

Kayjay- I really hope something works out so you don't have to sell!!

kayjay, I hope you won't have to sell Kuroo! I'll send my husband over, he's quite handy (though you may end up with a dog kennel instead of a washing machine)

susan402, RRG is great, I am in Australia so everything takes awhile, but they ship as soon as you place your order (in my experience anyway). I really love the 2 wigs I have bought from them, they fit beautifully and seem to suit Polly. The other one I got is actually medium brown, this one and this is what it looks like on Polly (any excuse to post a picture of her!) As you can see it is really dark, so I don't know what their dark brown would be.



Which brings me to my question: eyes What eyes for lati yellow? I know 14mm, but any 14mm? I have seen a few around, and some have a little thing poking out the back. (SO technical). I am thinking I like Polly blonde, but maybe she would be better blonde with lighter coloured eyes. Or if Miel comes with light eyes, maybe they can either swap eyes or wigs. Dolls are so much trouble!

 

Susanp- (Is there anything sexier than a man who is handy? I think not.) Thanks for the picture of Polly in the med brown wig. Do ask her: how does it feel to be so cute you can just wear anything?

On eyes. On my Lumi I actually prefer 12mm. But my Lumi is also Sp and a bit older. So there, now you get to pick from 14 or 12 as well. I've tried all kinds of eyes, with the little thing poking out the back (which I really think is quite handy for positioning), flat-backed oval, whatever. I've used plastic, acrylic, and glass. (Glass are my favorite as they seem to catch the light best. Lighter colors also seem to photograph best IMO, but of course there are also beautiful pics of dark-eyed babies.) I've bought Glastic from a few places, and also various eyes from Kemper and Junkyspot, and since I've been bringing in some secondhand dolls, I've now also got a small collection of What are these? eyes. My favorite eyes ever are the older Lati glass eyes (not what they're currently using, but what they were using last year) particularly the blue. Just gorgeous. I've never tried silicone eyes, but mainly because the price scares me.

susanp919: Polly looks so sweet, and yeah, you can love them all. I think the trick is to not have so many that you get overwhelmed with. I have about 20+ all in different sizes, and I seriously love everyone of them. They all hold a certain spot in my heart. All of mine are their own little family, but like now with so much that I'm doing the little ones are first on my mind, so my Lati's and my Mini Riz follow me all over the house. I haven't had a chance to play with my SD's/MSD's, but I know I will get back to them. And yes, you are right, just holding them at certain times calms me down, or makes me feel just a little better if life is getting too frantic. Just having them near even with my little boy, the dolls do something different for my moods

susan402: I had one of the wigs in medium brown, and it was nice, but for me it was way too bushy, and can't figure out a good way to cut it so it's not "so much hair". I've got a couple of the mohair ones, and they seem to lay flatter.

Well, my husband is going to sign for an early retirement tomorrow so I'm not sure I will ever get that Cookie that I want - still, you never know (I'm still going to keep my eye open for just the right Cookie in case I can afford to get her).

Though now I am as the choice seems rather large... Maybe Miel will come with light coloured eyes, and I can just change their wigs. Also, I am scared of delving into poor Polly's head. What if I find she has no brain, and is actually vacuous?
Well, more seriously, is it hard to change eyes? I have no idea, I haven't tried, and only once has the back of her head come off (by mistake, I nearly had heart-failure). I have looked at so many eyes now, they are starting to look the same, and I am going cross-eyed.

meguone, I don't think I will have any trouble loving Miel, I just like being melodramatic! I am so excited about her arrival, it is like I am creating my own little Christmas. I agree, Polly calms me down and has a particular effect on my mood, she always looks so serene.

Does anyone know when Lati will be opening orders again? I'm trying to budget my money right now and need to see when I'll need to work in Lati money haha.

 

Sorry for a double post but Lati just responded to my question. They said they will be opening orders again in September or October. So I'm guessing late September at the earliest

All my Lati Yellows (Lea, Miel and Lumi) have 12mm eyes. I think only Benny, I will consider the 14mm eyes, his eye sockets are soo big!

You're welcome. Changing eyes is no big thing. You should just go right now, open up Polly's head and pull out her eyes and put them back in. Just to get over the mystery. As for the choices, part of the reason I don't have a lot of glass eyes is that I haven't really made up my mind in most cases what I want. So I've purchased several pairs of inexpensive plastic and acrylic eyes to experiment with size and color. I figure when I get it right, I'll look for a more expensive pair of eyes that will give me the same look, only better. Audreysdolls has a lot of eye selections and offers 25% off. Kemper often has some good deals and inexpensive eyes. (Although both sites can take a while to ship orders.) And in the marketplace here you'll probably find some inexpensive eyes closer to you that you could acquire with cheaper postage costs. Just start to collect a few pairs so you can get an idea what you like. (It seems like it might be a waste of money, but trying stuff because you can't see it in person just seems to be part of the hobby and that's why there so much secondary market around here.)

I love cute whisper pics, Zorropirate, and what a nice room they have. Your Lami is so pretty! What lovely eyes she has.

 

They are spoiled rotten!! That is just a corner of their room with the new to us vintage Bodo Hennig furniture I picked up last weekend.

I LOVE Lami's eyes, they are actually really reasonably priced glass paperweight eyes I found over on eeeebay for about 6 smackers a pair!! They look just like the glass eyes that come from lati. They are hazel.

I'll be spamming much more now that I figured it out, or as always everyone can see how spoiled my lati's are over on flickr.

My house is plotting a conspiracy against me so I can't order another doll. Yesterday we had to get the electrician, today it was the plumber, hopefully tomorrow will be a tradesman free day. Is this off topic, no I don't think so, because I am getting to my point now: tradesmen are being paid in my potential dolly-money. I am secretly hoping to buy Coco in the next order period, and if it is later rather than sooner, I may be feeling a little bit less poor, and the tradesmen thing might be a distant memory! I am crossly looking at all my appliances and whitegoods, and telling them to behave.

susan402, thank you for the eye tips! I just bought a lightish grey pair from an Australian seller (hopefully the wait wont be so painful!), and they weren't too expensive. I love your justification for buying dolly-stuff, it makes me feel better about the number of wigs I have bought and then disliked! It is true though, isn't it, part of the hobby is to buy and try.

Susanp and I have now been back and forth about eyes and some of you have read my logic (however flawed) that I like to buy inexpensive eyes until I get the color and size I want (and then somehow never get around to replacing them with glass as I intend).

Since a bunch of us will be getting new kids very soon (!!!) and will probably be in the market for more suitable eyes, I wanted to give a plug for these plastic eyes for Kemper. I have 3 pairs of them and I think they're very nice for under $6/pr. (I also have some Glastic eyes and always feel they're too dark to photograph easily, fyi.)

Shipping is based on weight, starting at 1lb, and you can add in a bunch of eyes and wigs to make up a whole pound, although what does change is that insurance is automatically added to your shipping fee once your order reaches $20. And you have (in the US, anyway) your choice of the three major shippers and different shipping speeds/rates.

On the con side is that the site does not cater to BJD collectors specifically, and the site, as a whole, is not well organized, with a lot of clicking to find what you want. Also, once you order, it can take them a few days to actually pull it and ship it out to you. I think they allow themselves a week for this.

But anyway, I was talking about the eyes, so here's what I have:
Light Green
Soho Blue-Green
Grayish Blue

Hope that's useful for someone.

Susanp-what is up with everyone having to spend doll money on broken appliances lately? Kayjay, you...My breadmachine just broke, and while some might not consider that a necessity, I almost never buy bread at the store and mine finally died after about 10 years of heavy use. So I had to order another, which maybe wasn't new doll money, maybe it was pay off the dolls I already bought because I've been completely irresponsible money. Although maybe it would have been redirected to be make sure the new kids have hairs money. I hope nothing else goes wrong and that you've at least had good-looking tradesmen. Because yes, you must have Coco. ASAP. Now, what does "whitegoods" mean?

 

What's the deal with shipping? Did they just ship out Lost4eva's Ruki and then take a break? Was it just a tease? I know some White Sps have found their way home, what what about everything else? Anyone heard of any more shipping notices?

 

I've heard about a basic Lati Yellow Coco being shipped aswell, but thats all!!! I think they are trying to tease us!!!!

susan402, you are my official eye-mentor! Hehe. Thank you again, the links to your photos are so helpful. The Kemper eyes look lovely, I particularly like the Soho blue-green ones, and I think I might get a pair. I opened Polly's head yesterday, and looked inside, which is a step I suppose. When you change eyes, do the eyelashes stay put? So do you take out the putty and eyes, and put in new eyes, then stick it up with the putty again?
(I don't know what is happening with these pesky appliances. (BTW, whitegoods are white appliances such as washing machines. Must be an Australian thing). Anyway, my house has promised to behave for the time being, and let me save up for Coco.)

I don't know what the deal with shipping is either, I was starting to convince myself I would get a shipping notice this week. Though I am certainly not as impatient as I was last time, now that I have Polly to play with!

Thank you for the explanation of whitegoods. Haha, glad to help with the eyes and proud of you for peeking inside the head. Because I do my eyelashes myself, I'm not 100% sure about your question. I believe that the eyelashes are glued in along the top, outer edge of the socket. (My eyelashes are stuck to the inside of the head with masking tape and often do come out with the putty but) Yours shouldn't come out because no part of they eye or putty should be touching them. You might run into something where you mishandle the outside while fiddling with the inside and accidentally pull a lash off. You just glue it back in place with a bit of white glue on a toothpick. And yes, you take everything out, pull the putty off the old eyes and reuse it for the new eyes. Your current eyes are probably flatbacked ovals and have putty all over the backs. If the new eyes are round, you just divide the putty in half, roll it into snakes and stick it around the widest part of the eyeball. Then work them into place. I think the Soho color would look very nice on Polly.

 

OUCH!! I just ordered wigs for the two new Yellow boys, eyes for all 4 of the brothers, and a pair of eyes for one of the Yellow girls because one of the bigger girls swiped the eyes right outta her head yesterday. Still on the hunt for a Green wig, but at least we'll be somewhat put together when they get here. The flurry of shipping notices is making me anxious, even though I know I'll be at the end. But man, these kids are expensive.
