Back when I was first discovering my ability to crush on boys, there was a very specific aesthetic that I gravitated towards: 90s emo/skater Native American boys. Being part Native myself, and with an extended family with far more Native blood than I have, I've had plenty of exposure to the culture and their particular brand of that style type. I spent a very long time looking for a boy I could style into that character I had in my head, and Yun Qing seemed perfect...mostly. I couldn't tell for sure with the pictures in their Normal resin, but the face and their Tan color were what I was looking for. When the 30% off event happened and it was actually cheaper to get him in Tan than in Normal at his regular price, I jumped on the chance. I'm so glad now I did! As with most of my box openings, I had to do it after work. Since it's fall, and I live in Alaska, the lighting is not the most accurate for resin tone. Feel free to reach out if you want better color reference pics, and I'll take them when I can! We start at the very beginning: A beautiful and very long box. I was so pleased with how well they packaged him! I got the packaging off his face and I knew he was indeed perfect! A little more grown up than my original imagining of the character, but hey, I'm a little more grown up than the little girl who dreamed of him to begin with. We can be adults together. Aside from unpacking: When I took his head off to put some eyes in, I found this wonderful heavy-duty neck protector! And checking in his other joints, all of them have this textured plastic inset for additional joint hold. They're not glued in, so they can be replaced with sueding easily without bulking up the joints at all, which is really nice. I'll have to do that project at some point, maybe when he's off getting a face up. (The important characters, the ones where I have a specific desire I'm not sure I can match, get professional face ups. Yun Qing is important.) Aside to the aside: The neck protector photo is the most accurate to his true resin color on my screens. Eyes in and standing! I don't love his body; the Island Doll Norse Myth 73cm seems to get progressively smaller in scale as they get down towards the feet. It's not a trick of the camera angle, unfortunately, although the angle certainly isn't helping. His feet are too small for him to balance well without shoes on, although I suppose that does mean he'll fit a wider variety of shoes. And I got him dressed and ready to go for now! Definitely happy I was able to evoke the aesthetic I wanted with currently-owned pieces, but I'll be getting and making him several items that are specifically his own. Haven't settled on a name yet, but we'll bond for a bit and I'm sure he'll tell me eventually! Thanks so much for looking! I hope he could bring you at least some of the enjoyment he brings me. (For the tiny anthro he arrived with, see here: /threads/island-doll-nuan-nuan-tiny-darling.883236/)
I'm Native, and he looks great! Can't wait to see how you style him! A lot of my cousins have that NDN Skater look.
Thank you! It's a little tough because while I can tell you exactly which family member I got my Native blood from, she was on my dad's side and I look very much like my mom. Kinda feels like I get to acknowledge and claim that part of me that really isn't obvious to those around me.
Omg he's amazing! I'm so so excited to see him come together! And what a beautiful sculpt, he has such a striking face. I love love dolls with unique faces, and alternative styled dolls too. Really can't wait to see what you do with him!
Thank you! I looked at seriously so many sculpts, but none of them had that broad, squarer jaw I was looking for until Yun Qing. It's so hard to find broader jaws that aren't also sharp!
He looks great, I don't normally look at Island Doll's bigger boys but he's got something special in him. Love his strong features and the tan resin is very beautiful. Can't wait to see him with his face up.
Oh he's wonderful! Congrats on the arrival, and I love his outfit - can't wait to see how you style him further! I'd hoped to order during ID's sale but other things cropped up (alas). They're on my future list though!
