IpleHouse JiD Mini Discussion Part 17

Apr 10, 2015

    1. The flannel shirt collar is fine - it's the leather jacket whose lapels aren't creased. Cannot parse this.

And yes, while a flannel is great for coordinating layered looks, it really is best around the waist. ^^

    2. I'm seriously thinking about getting a Cordelia for myself. I always wanted to have an Iplehouse Bjd and I just fell in love with her, especially with the new face-up. ^_^
The only thing I never liked so much about JIDs were the hands. But when I saw that you could order different hands for them I got hooked.
Wow, I haven't even ordered anything, but I'm already getting excited. :whee:

    3. You totally should! Only thing about buying them different hands is that their hands are REALLY hard to change. Especially the first time you try. They have the MOST TINY hand S-hooks I have ever seen! It's possible to change them sure, but man I don't do it often. I know some people in here have mastered it though. I also think I'm the only one with a Cordelia in here. I might be wrong but I don't remember any others. I'm not super happy with my girls last photoshoot but here's one ok picture of her.

    4. Oh, thanks for the information, that's very helpful. If I order her maybe I can ask them to attach the other hands immediately. No idea if they do that, though. But shouldn't be much of a problem for them.
I saw a Cordelia box opening yesterday and she already had different hands attached than the ones in the picture.

I like your girl. :] Is her wig from Leeke, by any chance?

    5. Thanks! Her wig is from Leeke. It's a little big on her, she wears a wig cap to make the wig not slide around as much. But I love it a lot! :D

    6. Nope you're not the only one ;)

But I don't know how many others have LB skin like my Cordie...

I like your girl's photo, her wig is a lovely colour :)

My Cordie came with the old hands, which are quite chunky, but all of the JID's now are coming with the new hands (ITEM VIEW : J. I. D Option Parts - JID_girl New hand parts01) which are a lot daintier than than that of my both my JID girls. The promos on Cordelia's page appear to be the old basic hands, but I'm sure they're send the new ones as standard. No harm asking them though if you're worried about getting the older versions ;)

    7. Oh yes! I can't believe I forgot about your girl! She's beautiful! And it's amazing how different she looks from my girl!

    8. The wig is very cute. I had an eye on it for a while, too. What size is it? 7/8 inch?

Oh, so that means if I order a normal Cordelia I won't have to order the new hands seperately?
The discription says "Basic default hand is assembled". Hm. Guess I will ask before I order, just to be sure. But thanks for the information. :]

    9. Thank you

You're right they are so different. She seemed so unique and in contrast to her original promos, then seeing other owner pics, I have yet to see any that are the same. Cordelia is such a versitile sculpt.

And sorry :sweat I couldn't resist... This popped into my head when I read your post  and I remembered an old pic I took of Cordie and Asa for a photostory that never was finished....

Cordie: Wah! She forgot about me... *sobs*
Asa: Shhh... It's ok if she does, cos I'll never forget you...

Asa is such a softy for her girl ;)

You're welcome and yes that's right, they should all come with the new hands now. Cordie was bought during her first sales period for the Carved Heritage series and they hadn't released the new hands then, which is why she has the older versions. I think it was a month or so later that the new hands became standard. But if you're still concerned, it is better to make sure :)

    10. It is indeed a 7/8. But the JID heads are slightly small so some 7/8 wigs are too big for them.
AWWW, Sorry Cordie. I didn't mean to forget about you. I swear. You're so pretty. I love you.

    11. The hands for ALL dolls were 're done' some time ago... The new hands became the ones used for default hands that come on a new doll.... what that means is THESE are the hands that will come with your doll (you can't even get the old style from what I just checked) ...
      ITEM VIEW : J. I. D Option Parts - JID_girl New hand parts01

    12. Ah, okay. That's good to know. I like the new hands way better anyway.
Good thing I asked, before having two sets of the same hands in the end. :XD:

      • x 1
    13. :whee: No worries a good hug and all will be forgiven, but see that you don't do it again or Asa will defend be after you lol :XD:

Yeah, my Cordie is such a pitiful thing. She gets emotional over the tiniest thing. Such a kid at heart, she's only ever an adult with Asa ;)

And Asa pretends not to care about anything, but mess with her Cordie and you'll make her list haha

I really need to take more pics of these two, it's been a while since I've been able to get them out for the camera. Hopefully soon I'll have a few minutes to myself when I can have dolly time lol

    14. One more, though I got mine more recently. I didn't fall in love with Cordelia until after I saw her in person.

    15. She looks very cute. :]
I like the wig you gave her. Is it from Iplehouse?

    16. @Amadiel, yes, Its an Iplehouse. It's the one that came with her, but they sell it separate as well. I really like their wigs. They aren't as fine as the Monique, but for me, that makes them more manageable. If you think you might order a wig for Cordelia from them, let me know, and I'll check the size. I ordered the same one for Violet before I got C, and the JID size is too big. I can compare how they both fit on Cordelia and tell you if it's the JID or KID size. :) Some of the JIDs are smaller headed than others, lol.

    17. @bluepita: Thank you, that would be very helpful if you could check what size she's wearing. :)
I already did some research myself, though. Her head circumference is 18cm. I have a Dreaming Doll Misora with a head circumference of 17,5 cm and she's wearing 6-7 inch wigs. So 6-7 inch wigs would work for Cordelia, I guess...?

    18. I tried on a couple of different wigs. My 6-7 fit perfect and that includes Iplehouse's KID size. The JID wig is too big. I suppose technically 18cm is almost exactly 7", but none of my 7-8 are right. I can vouch for a 6-7 in Leeke, Licht, Iple, and Monique. :)

    19. @bluepita: Wow, you have no idea how much you helped me there. Thank you so much. :3nodding:

    20. No problem! In the process, I discovered Cordelia looks gorgeous in all colors of hair. :) Win/Win

    21. Bahati received her latest accessory, Simon, an Edwin and they met in the park......none of my dolls are as spoiled as her, she sure is my most loved and cared for doll......

    22. What a lucky girl! :aheartbea Nobody ever gave me an adorable Edwin while I was just hanging out on a park bench. I'll have what she's having.

    23. She is so beautiful! That face-up and the wig...so perfect together! :loveI hope you don't mind my asking...did the new hands come as the default for your girl, or did you order them separately?

    24. Thanks! They came as the default. :)

    25. Wonderful! You just saved me $20, Bluepita; and that's some real BJD community love!!! :aheartbea May you have some nice karmic payback for that soon, or maybe one day I'll have the honors of returning the favor. Thanks again, and have a marvelous day! :kitty1

    26. I think Iplehouse has changed the shape of their head sculpts over time.
My Benny and Ryan are fine in 7/8 wigs but Violet and Isar both need 6/7.

    27. I don't think the head shapes were ever technically uniform... This is especially true of the EID men. Head shape also lends to 'image' so it would stand to reason some would be different... add in to that changing artists and ya you will end up with 'some' variance. I mean a 'round' face and an 'oval' one kinda 'can't' have the same head shape... it just wouldn't work O_o. I also wonder if who ever they get wigs from is also affecting it.. I know for a fact some wigs come from different makers than the usual based on the packaging the wigs came in.

    28. Heh, I've never met two sculpts whose skulls were totally uniform.... (OK, well, I guess maybe the Volks Four Sisters dolls, for teh obvs reasons... :XD: )

Isar has a really narrow head & face, I mean even just at a glance she stands out from the rest of the chibi JID girls, so it's no surprise she wears a smaller wig. My Ryan & Colin fit wigs differently, too-- Colin's skull is appreciably smaller, Ryan has an older sculpture style with the broader features.

There is also the fact of wig-makers not exactly using perfect size standards, either. It's just like human clothes & shoes; sometimes I'm an 8, sometimes I'm a 9-1/2, you never can tell which way the sizing will run.

      • x 1
    29. It's no problem. Many people have been very generous helping me.

I found a list somewhere of the specific heads that are smaller and posted it on one of the threads. But I can't find either again. :( :) I remember at least Violet, Isar, and Cordelia, but they might not have been the only ones. The Iplehouse site still shows them all at 7.1" and the 7-8 wig as the JID wig. If I find it later, I'll post it. Nice to know in case you want an Iplehouse wig. I love the one I bought from them for Violet, but it looks ridiculous on her.

      Added:
Turns out what I saw was referring to a different issue with having a smaller head, so it probably doesn't apply here. :) It was a question Iplehouse answered of DOA member Supernova. :) (Posted on page 45 by Supernova):

      "Dear Supernova,

Currently some of JID heads are little bit small on JID body.
For instance, Isar, Soa, Cecile, Violet and Sierra have small head so it can be little bit floppy on JID body.
In case of Asa, she has a bigger head compared to Soa so she can be more stable.

Sorry to disappoint you and we will try to find a way to make it more stable."

    30. I was thinking about hot glue sueding my girls but how would you do the top of the thigh joint? That weird piece of resin and the inserts for it would stop it working right? Has anyone just taken the resin piece out? I've found it's not very useful.

    31. I've heard of some taking it out completely and even modding it so it worked better for them, but I'm not sure about the sueding I'm afraid. Maybe a temporary measure like using moleskin would tell you whether it would effect it before doing permanent sueding?

    32. I've been wondering about that bit on the top of the JID boy thigh joint, too.... it doesn't seem to do all that much in the way of holding standing poses, though I guess it does hold sitting poses OK. I suspect tightening-and-sueding would be way more useful than that slot system.

Hot-glue sueding is more temporary than gluing on actual moleskin or suede-- if it doesn't work, you can just pick off the hot glue, and start over or give it up. At least, the hot glue I have picks off easily, once it sets. I can use my fingernail.

    33. I've found the thigh joint to be useless, it doesnt hold position and my dolls struggle to sit. I've strung them tight which has helped a bit but hoping hot glue sueding will help some more. I can't imagine the glue would work with the extra resin piece but I might get a better result by just taking it out and gluing the joint.

    34. Now I feel like I have to go pull mine apart to see if I ever sueded him.....I wrangled him out of his Batsuit finally, so this would be the time to do it. And I have to wire him.

Speaking of wiring, anyone remove the hidden joints from theirs? I know someone who does it with the bigger dolls, since the joints are less than great, and I never use them anyway.

    35. Wow-- so if you remove the peanut-joint, what do you do to cover up the huge gap that occurs when the limb is bent? I'd think one would want to leave the useless joint in just for aesthetics, if nothing else.

But that's an interesting idea. Does it actually improve anything structurally? Or, is the joint simply removed to make room for the wire?

    36. Y'know, we didn't get that far into the conversation. Probably just to get the wire in there (though it might fit in the bigger dolls with them in - I can't remember if I ever tried wiring my old Kamau or not). It was Buff btw, and since her dolls are usually really fully-clothed within an inch of their lives I doubt the gap shows. Mine is clothed all the time too (superheros.....they are always in costume) so I don't think the gap will be an issue. I do think the wire improved the ease of posing. It has too really, I can't make those joints work to save my life when the doll is dressed. Sometimes when he's not.

I dunno. I would like to try it out just to see before the bigger one gets home. I would much rather pointlessly restring a JID than an EID.

    37. Hah, I'd much rather restring an EID than a JID-- working with big parts is always easier than working with little parts! I got big hands & bad eyes. :whee:

Most of my Iplehouse guys spend so much time naked and/or partially naked, joint-hole exposure is always an issue. Costumed men WOULD be much less fiddly. ^^ But wires sure do turn any doll into an action-posing expert, that's for sure. I've never tried to wire through those infernal elbow-peanuts, but if it were possible, that'd be the ultimate fantasy. Because those goddamn elbow joints, man, I swear. I've gotten good at faking 'em (both new & old type), but it'd be so much nicer if they actually worked as intended all the time.

    38. XD I'd much rather do the small ones! But I was endlessly frustrated by my old EID when I had him, I couldn't touch him without angst. Which is why he's gone.

Yeah, naked and gappy joints do not go together. I have a love-hate with wires. I need to figure out how to do it so they don't move so much. I think I just need to go one long piece from leg to leg, and through the arms. Either way I have about half my dolls wired at any given time. And I thought I was the only who couldn't stand the elbow joints! If I can actually get them out they don't go back in! And they never stay put!

I'm going to take them out tonight *decided*. If it sucks I'll just put them back! I restrung all my Dollshes twice each in one evening....I can do this. Maybe.

    39. My first JID came with one long wire through both legs. I bought her second-hand and the seller failed to mention that the doll was wired, so imagine my surprise when I met resistance the first time I tried to make her sit. It was a really thick wire considering the size of the doll. Not only that, but once I had bent her legs for sitting, I could never straighten them out properly afterwards. The kink in the wire remained and interfered with her standing. It pretty much put me off wiring dolls. I eventually removed the wire and was much happier with the doll's posing ability.

I have another doll that might benefit from wiring, but my experience has me running scared. How long should a leg wire be? I really don't want to go through the knees again.

      • x 1
    40. Generally wire is for the knees, either for extra help in posing, or stability. While I'm messing with Bruce tonight, I'm going to wire my Granada Terra who is so freaking kicky at the knees he's making me crazy....I don't usually do one long piece through both hips-knees, but I was thinking of trying that with one of my DS dolls, so I may do it tonight to see what happens.

Normally I go from just above the ankle (so it doesn't mess with the feet), through the hip into the torso. I use masking tape to tape off the ends just in case (I've never had a doll damaged from wire, but I've seen it, so, paranoia.) and the only thing I don't like is when the wires aren't really long enough and come out through the hip joints. which is my fault, since I'm the one who didn't make them long enough, but still annoying. I only rarely do arms, unless I need it for a specific reason, or the doll is an unusual wreck and needs help.
Bruce needs epic posing ability, therefore I'll probably wire his arms. If I can do without the inner joints.

If it's the hips that's the problem I'd just try hot glue sueding, restringing tighter and thicker string if the doll can take it.

I restrung Bruce when I got him, so I'm assuming he's strung well (lol), but I swear I can't remember if/where I sueded him. He'll get more tonight regardless.

Also it would be nice if I could find him some shoes....he has nice clothes now, but is barefoot since the only shoe's I've bought him are Batman boots....
And totally off the conversation, but my best friend just ordered a Boris who will be Superman! :D Cause that can't be bad!

    41. @vermont chick , yikes! - That sounds like a hassle. So, you had the lesson of "Always Use Proper Gauge of Wire For Doll's Size" thrust upon you. ^^ A too-thick wire must've been hard to jam in there in the first place (you have to wonder at the determination of some people to do things wrong). It's surprising how thin a wire is actually required to stabilize a limb... just a bit of resistance. I'd imagine a too-thick wire would kink up like an overprocessed perm.

I've never wired legs-- just arms, to cure "pterodactyl elbow" in larger dolls. If you have Dollshes, you know pterodactyl elbow. xD My 68cm Limhwa Mano has it something awful, so he has arm wires. Now that I mention it, that guy sure could also use wires in his hips, too (my motivation seemed to run out above the waist). I hadn't considered doing one wire through both hip & knee, but if that gives a man action-posing powers, sounds good to me.

    42. What gauge wire do you think you would use for a JID? I've been thinking about wiring my girls. Even extremely tightly strung, my JIDs hips aren't very posable. I tried hot glue sueding the part not filled with clicky slots. All of that helped some. But wiring is something I'm interested in trying, if only because I haven't done it before.

    43. To really fix a JID girl's stringing, I'd suggest having the torso drilled so the doll can be strung in the traditional way with elastic running up the leg through the torso to the neck. I've had most of my JID girls drilled, and it makes a huge difference.

    44. Pterodactyl elbows!! I had only ever heard them called "Hound pose". Either way...I have a classic body, and that is pretty much all it does XD His legs are on another doll, and they could use wiring....

Oh that's genius. I don't own a girl, but I've restrung my friend's....she was one of two dolls that I had so much trouble with I injured myself :\ and she's still floppy!
That would be a huge improvement. AND I was just wondering that about my Granado Terra because he's the same way. That's a good body but it's kind of a hot mess.

Anyway, I removed all the joints from my Owen, restrung, sueded (he wasn't sueded after all, but he was strung well!) him in the hips and chest, and wired both arms and legs. omg he can do amazing things. He is literally rock solid, and unsueded and unwired I thought he was good. Now he won't budge when I stand him with his arms bent and torso slouched forward. It's awesome. There is definitely gapping at his knees and elbows, and they're prone to coming out of socket....but they did that to me when the joints where in so I don't care (yet, who knows what will happen after time has passed), and he'll be dressed so the gaps won't show anyway.

I did not put glue in the little dot things in the hips. I just did the smooth parts. I really think that's all you need to do if anyone is interested in hot glue sueding. I don't know what the girls look like, I only restrung the one once and I've blocked her out of my mind due to the trauma (though I want one, I need a Wonder Woman).

    45. @MB Lilac is right... drilling is the ultimate direction I plan to go...

    46. I second the request to know what gauge wire to use for JID. I kept the wire that was in my girl. I can't tell what gauge it is but it's 24 inches long and wouldn't be out of place in an EID, for sure. I still can't straighten it out completely.

Unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable drilling and don't know anyone who could do it for me. I'm handiest with a needle and thread. Anything bigger and forget it.

    47. I don't actually know what gauge would be best.....I use armature wire - it came in a huge spool I got the first year I collected BJDs and I still have a ton left. If it's too big for one of my dolls I tend to curse a lot and then just don't wire that doll >.<

I think there's different gauges for armature wire, but the supply store I got it from did not have it labeled other than price, so I've never known what it is.

    48. I have armature wire left over from when I made cloth dolls. Not a spool, thank goodness, just a modest roll. There's plenty of it, but if I'm not mistaken it's even thicker than the wire I extracted from my JID. I wish I could remember where I bought it. I'm pretty sure it was online and not a local store.

Would floral wire be too thin?

    49. I think the wire I have is milliner's wire... no idea what gauge it is either, just had it lying around the craft-bin. It seems thin, but it's enough for elbows.

I'll bet there are whole discussions from people who actually know from wire-gauge measurements somewhere in the Customizations subforum...! Maybe somebody's already covered mini dolls in general or JIDs in particular.

    50. This might not help to many people, but I did wiring demo with my Dollmore Kid Pado a while back (so long ago I don't know where I actually did it....) EDIT: So long ago Alex didn't have a faceup by me. That was a million years ago at least.

This is the wire I use

      Definitely be worth a look!
