IMPL dolls Star, Model & Idol Discussion 16

Sep 2, 2022

    1. I definitely wouldn't suggest using putty, but sometimes sueding the head joint with hot glue or using a neck protector on the neck can make a difference, and depending on the individual body and head, a hybrid will look fine even with up to a full cm difference. Hyriding is a often a lot of trial and error though, and sometimes it can come down to how much will something bother you personally.

      • x 5
    2. I'd check in and see if the thread I posted could help first, the 68cm body has a 10.3cm neck option so it would only be a 0.3cm gap

    3. ::slides into the chat::
Did someone say hybrid? (It's like saying Beetlejuice three times)

There is a gap - the Iplehouse neck opening is larger than the Impldoll neck base. But with a wig, it can be hidden.

    4. I *almost* tagged you for this actually xD

    5. I actually forgot that! I know the proportions would be really close with my Mu. I currently have the head on a Resinsoul 68cm, so I knew the Impldoll would be a perfect upgrade. However, Carina is so much larger than Mu.. but that means that a larger neck option would probably be awesome.

@MaleficentMrsofEvil : Oh, I can't remember! Do you have one of the IH on the 68cm?

    6. Currently have a Limhwa head on the Idol body, but let me put Aaliyah on it:

    7. Oh, thank youuuu!!!!! I don't know why I didn't think to ask before!

      • x 1
    8. Yeah, for me the gap doesn’t at all work. I guess because I pose and photograph so much and change wigs so often, I would be fussing over it forever so that it wouldn’t show in my photos. I fuss over enough other stuff, so my hybrids need to be as matched as possible. Also most of my dolls are very realistic so another reason I don’t want to long a neck or a gap. I have often sanded a neck shorter but never filled a neck hole. I guess if I’m spending a lot of money on a body, I want the match to work as well as possible before I buy. But others may have a much different set of things that would bother them!

There would be the possibility of the 10.3cm neck sanded to 9.7cm size. That would be what I would do with the Carina head myself.

    9. I prefer to buy full dolls because I'm hella lazy. I don't want to be on the hunt for something to work between head and body and potentially resin, too. Some people find that fun. I am not one of those people. But....

I do have hybrids and not all of them are ones that came to me that way via 2nd hand. I have a SD head on a DV body (perfect fit/resin match), MD head on AS body (both needed work to make it work structurally & resin matching), MD head on 5Star body (great fit, not great resin match because of existing face-up I refuse to wipe), AT head on AoD body (good fit, not the best resin match but another face-up I won't wipe) BiDoll head on DF-H body (good fit, terrible resin match but he's blank so whatever).

I could also be pretty easily convinced to do a hybrid for certain sculpts that I've stared at longingly for quite some time. Fortunately (for my wallet and sanity) most of those sculpts are not the easiest to find so the temptation to do a hybrid again is not overly likely. But never say never, right?

      • x 4
    10. @MaleficentMrsofEvil Your hybrid looks fantastic!! It's giving fashion doll proportions which is the desired visual for me :3nodding:

@Mahgiep Oh, that makes sense. I'm picky about my photographs too so I'll keep that in mind. It's really hard to know these things when I don't have any BJDs in possession yet. My enthusiasm comes from experience with hybridizing Nendoroid heads on several 1/12 scale MJD/BJD bodies, so I'm no stranger to getting handwork done and skin tone matching to have pieces fitted.

@Iron_Dog BJDs are a hella expensive hobby at that so I feel you on making hybrids. It just seems so fussy and risky. I too prefer full dolls for those reasons and I would hate to have an incomplete extra body or head lying around. But you know, it's the thought that sometimes a truly special doll can only be created through hybrid.

I am learning so much from everyone's input, thank you! :abow:

    11. I will say for some places that's kinda your only option for example foveo makes SD heads but no SD body so no matter what I have to hybrid my head from them. Or any devotion doll sculpt you have to find a matching body. I don't mind bc it means I can be diverse in my bodies I collect and if I can't stand it I can sell off pieces.

      • x 3
    12. Yeah, the heads I'd like to someday add to my collection are ones where the company/artist only makes heads so hybrid is the only option there. I'm not fond of it but I also strongly dislike having random heads rolling around in a drawer so I'd feel a bit driven to find the right body. It bothers me for some reason to have floating heads which is probably why I very rarely buy just a head.

A friend has a few bjd bits and bobs they'd like to off load and they have a head I like a lot. But finding a body will be a bit of a pain both for sizing and resin matching. To be fair, the head is blank and blush to match is very much a thing. But I also don't know who that head is within my Worlds so I've not thrown money at my friend for the head. Knowing who a character is before buying is supposed to be one of my hard Rules for collecting in an effort to help curb the growing horde. Spoiler: It's not really working as planned.

Impl tempted me hard with a couple of their more unusual heads a few years back but since they also make bodies, it wouldn't have been a hybrid. Lack of funds was part of the reason I didn't buy then. I think they also had the head on a 72cm or maybe even the 75cm body and that was my other deciding factor as I feel that's just too much doll for me.

    13. This is Devotion, and she’s a Twigling Oryx head, on a custom coloured impldoll new star body. Twigling heads in general fit really well

      • x 5
    14. @Chameleon Oh, yes it looks to be a perfect match! Is that custom resin I see or did you dye the body? The colour looks so clean and uniform :o

      • x 1
    15. It was custom resin. Impl took from march until like October or November iirc to cast her, and they actually suspended custom colours after they cast the second half of my order!! I had a bit of a frustrating time with that order, in which they got my other custom colour very wrong at first, and they kept telling me it would ship before it did.

The results are high enough quality that I’m okay with the wait, and the difficulties, but I’m not sure I’d do it again.

      • x 1
    16. @Chameleon I can imagine they had to suspend custom resin, especially if the number of orders and the variety of colours requested far exceed their working capacity. But out of curiosity, how did the ordering process work? Did you have to send in your head for them to match? I’m not sure there is some kind of doll Pantone swatch book they could use asides from the most popular skins out there.

      • x 1
    17. I initially choose from a colour page they linked me to but the shade was much too light for what I asked for. I sent them a physical sample (a paint chip) and the colour match was exact.

      • x 3
    18. @Iron_Dog Oh, of course, that would make the most sense! My broke bum refused to buy a Pantone book back in the day and I’d just eyeball my colour selections when I used to design enamel pins lol

      • x 2
    19. @sageyufi Often the paint chips are free from the paint store of your choice. I brought the colour I wanted matched with me to the store and found what was closest. I took 2 of the chips and kept one for myself in case something happened to the letter along the way.

      • x 3
    20. The new female muscle body IMPLDOLL just released is so lovely and so is the Moira head! I am gravitating toward my first purchase now more than ever :D

      • x 5
    21. I emailed them to ask for a quote for 2 bodies, 2 different colours, and included a photo of the heads that would be going on. Because I’d heard of Iron Dog’s experience with getting sent two dolls in the wrong colour before they sent in a paint chip, I insisted on sending in a paint chip for each of them. It was wasted money, because they still made me choose out of their weird little colour swatch page, which they emailed me the link to with all the blues. They sent me an image of my darker blue body, which was way too light, and we argued for a couple days until they agreed to remake him.

They sent the first body without giving me any pictures, without the second body I’d ordered—that’s the star body you’re seeing in my pictures. She matched the head basically perfectly. After a couple more months of emailing, they sent my second body in dark blue, again without showing me pictures. He’s very close to the right colour, but a little greyer where the head is a little bluer. The difference is minimal so I decided not to really argue. Both bodies I ordered can with random heads in the custom colours—I guess in case I changed my mind about the heads I wanted on those bodies. They also gave me a stringing tool and an NS head as an apology for the number of times they promised to ship and didn’t.

      • x 3
    22. @Chameleon Oof, that was a rough process for you, I can see why you'd never want to do it again. All that back and forth exchange sounds really stressful and if there's one pet peeve I have about anything, it's wasting a lot of money too. Do you think if you couldn't have sent the paint chip you could have given them the colour code instead? That's what I did with my pins manufacturer, but of course since I never owned a swatch book I'd never be able to tell how accurate the colours came out to be.

      • x 2
    23. So the reason I didn’t do that was because Iron Dog tried that, and got not one but two incorrectly coloured dolls. There could be differences in colour balances, monitor to monitor, that make a colour look one way on my end, and another way on theirs, which is why I didn’t want to do that. I’m a little peeved that I spent $40 on shipping those chips only to have them ask me to give them a code out of their swatch book instead—if you’re not going to use my physical samples, tell me so I don’t waste money?

if you were to send them a colour code, once they reopen custom colours, it may be a very positive result and come out close the way my dolls did, or it may be very frustrating, and involve multiple incorrect dolls like Iron Dog’s experience—I can’t know to what extent they used the paint chips versus the colours I identified in the lineup they sent me, just that I am ultimately relatively satisfied with the outcome, but less willing to do it again.

I will also add, the custom colour was $100 per colour—resinsoul charged me $30 to do jet black, and $15 for a light purple, so $100 is a little steep for at least the lighter of the colours (I paid it, because I think the new Star body is beautiful, and I really wanted it for my light blue girl)

      • x 2
    24. Talk about a headache! But I know what you mean, those bodies are just so aesthetically pleasing and if they offered custom resin where no other company makes on top of that, why wouldn't you go for it?

btw, IMPLDOLL collectors, how would you rate the poseability of their bodies compared to other doll bodies? Their demonstration videos look really promising but I have no reference for what is considered so-so, good, or excellent poseability in BJD world. How would you compare it to say SartoriaJ's bodies?

      • x 4
    25. Here's Imara on the 63 cm Model body.
While I don't have a SartoriaJ body, I have several Iplehouse bodies. Here's a post on the nSID body. I love Iplehouse sculpting, but man, it sometimes feels like war getting that doll to do what you want. Impldoll is sooooo much easier.
Interestingly, I recently got the new 1/3 (62 cm) female body, and I spy with my little eye a wee bit of hot glue?

      • x 4
    26. @MaleficentMrsofEvil Thank you so much for all your helpful resources! Really appreciate it :abow:

I of course would always prefer a doll I can play with for longer periods and IMPLDOLL sells that really well. And their body sculpts are just perfect for those outfits that show off skin, y'know? Now I'll just have to weigh budgeting vs my doll needs for the next while until I come to a decision :sweat

      • x 3
    27. Their bodies are incredibly easy to pose, I have a nSID and yeah she's permanently in sitting and looking pretty jail.

I think they wire their dolls automatically and they hot glued mine as I recall. Not that I mind at all

    28. Does anyone know what resin match for Iplehouse to Impldoll...eg. Iple real skin and light brown. Just curious...I would likely buy a full doll from Impldoll in any case - I am getting further and further drawn to them. However I do have floating Iplehouse heads so just dreaming...

      • x 2
    29. So I would say close, but expect to color-match (i.e., not perfect, but airbrush probably not necessary).
Impldoll peach gold has a distinct yellow undertone, whereas Iplehouse is more red:

Impldoll's "real skin" resin appears the be the most versatile (IMHO) - Imara's headcap is in the lap of the Dollmore Zaoll x Dream Valley B56-01 hybrid.

    30. Thank you for that! That's good to know. I have an Iplehouse peach gold floating head too so it's nice to know the colour match might not be spot on for that one. I keep saying no more big dolls but Impldoll's latest dolls are very tempting.

    31. Is anybody else not overly wowed by the new “muscle” body 63. Like it’s a good looking body, but it’s just the model body with a slightly more defined 6 pack. I was hoping for at least some degree of musculature on the arms and legs, like the old muscle body had! The only piece of her that’s at all different from the model body is the lower torso, and that’s just a little underwhelming to me.

I’d love to see a body that tries to be muscular more than it tries to be feminine—like a thicker torso, and broader shoulders, and big muscular arms and legs. I’d love to see a less hourglass shaped muscle girl body that has some of the exaggerated musculature we see on male bodies all the time. This doesn’t feel like a muscular body, it feels like the body of a model who does lots of core training.

      • x 9
    32. @Chameleon I love it since I have an OC suited for it, but as you say, my hope is one day a company has the guts to give us a true muscle lady because my main girl who is ripped af deserves to be shelled!! (and why not make her 68 cm at that too!)

      • x 2
    33. I think it's pretty, but the arms are not as buff as the old one for sure. I feel like the sculpting is overall more detailed and at least to me, nicer to look at, but she's not as buff as the old one. But given that she comes with ballerina feet, I think the musculature she has fits with that nicely. I still don't think the lighting in the pictures really shows the details as well as it could either. Like the pictures are nice, but feel more aesthetic than practical for showing sculpting details.

@Chameleon @sageyufi if you're looking for a larger, more heavily muscled girl, devotion doll has a 75cm one that is coming out soon i think.

      • x 4
    34. Omigosh!!! The perfect body does exist!! Thank you!!! :D

      • x 1
    35. I agree that the sculpting is more refined/overall nicer, but I think it would have been more aptly titled the dancer body, or the ballerina body, because titling it the muscle body gets people like me expecting something buffer! It’s nice, and I could see it being good for people who want something like the Supia ballerina or the Amadiz angels body, but it doesn’t fill the same niche as the OG muscle star body (even if the small bust doesn’t look that great at all).

For what it’s worth, this is a critique I’ve also had of the Iplehouse HID girl, and the IOS 65cm muscular girl. I’m looking for something a lot more like Bonelace Miss Orc, or miracledoll’s 68cm body.

I will say, linking me to the Devotion Doll body was possibly the highlight of my day. Depending on the price, there may be multiple of those coming home, and the preorder is expected to open in the next few days, so it was very timely! Thank you so much!!

      • x 2
    36. Yeah I see in the pictures they're calling the new muscle body "slim" but I don't think that was very clear during the development, unfortunately. Which yeah means people are going to be disappointed.

And you're welcome abut the Devotion Doll girl! It's too big for my needs, but I've been following the development for it and it looks really good for a buff girl!

      • x 2
    37. Oh! On their facebook they said they're working on another version too in response to someone asking about this one being the "slim" model! So maybe they will be making a more heavily muscled version afterall!

      • x 2
    38. I like the muscle girl for similar reasons bc the character in my mind is secretly buff, and I know it's not a very popular stance. I actually liked her even before they reworked the body. I have a feeling more muscly female bodies will be on the horizon though.

      • x 1
    39. I'm planning to mod the body I'm getting (the 68cm female one) into a more muscular body. I'm mostly going to be adding to the arms and lower legs--the lower legs are sooo skinny. I did see that the new muscular body was labeled "slim" so it'll be cool if they release one that is a bit more filled in with the limbs actually being, like, wider.

      • x 3
    40. I hope you’re right about that, because I can never have too many buff girls in my collection! I’m slowly coming around to the new body as being a very pretty body for a character who isn’t supposed to appear as strong as they are.
If you do a project journal for that mod, please tag me. I would absolutely love to see how you go about adding muscle. I’ll be doing a project journal on resculpting the OG muscle girl’s bust to look less unfinished so that I can use that body for a character.

      • x 4
    41. @Chameleon - yeah, this is the first Impldoll pre-order I'm going to pass on. Fingers crossed they make a 68 cm version with more muscle!
She is lovely, but I agree - this is more of a "toned" body than a muscular one. She's like a yoga or Pilates instructor.

    42. wondering if anyone here bought the 2023 Kamara and got the eyes that were offered with her?
i would like to see an owner photo of the eyes if anyone has them :) thank you so much!

      • x 3
    43. I actually bought the eyes and put them in a different doll, they're really pretty. Very green which I wasn't expecting. They're also quite small, probably 14/5 I wager. Once she's back from her faceup I'll post more pics :)[IMG] [IMG]

    44. this really helped me a lot, thank you so much! and the iris size is really helpful too :thumbup
I've wound up with some grey ones somehow.
back to eye shopping then, i liked that abalone shell type green a lot in the pictures

      • x 2
    45. Ofc it's quite limey in person if that helps too :) The impldoll eyes seem to be very small to fit the eyewells. Kamara's eye wells are rather narrow so it doesn't surprise me.

    46. I am more and more tempted to try impldoll sd girls probably will get the new body I always got msd, have one dream valley SD, still in the box so it's my first intentional SD venture wirh Impldoll

Do you guys maybe have any info/photos of impldoll bodies with feeple heads, please?

I always struggle with sizing of clothes etc what general sizes from volks or other shops would work on new muscle body?

      • x 3
    47. I don't have feeple heads, but I have a fair amount of impldoll bodies, like the model body. I think measurement wise it will resemble the model body, and with that body I buy 1/3rd boy sized clothes and custom sized where I can. More clothes makers are making that size in clothes too.

      • x 1
    48. I had my FeePle60 Juri 2012 on the Star body (second version). She worked well on it. I no longer have her on it, but I did enjoy the look.

    51. My sexy Minerva return from the face up artist. The artist did an amazing job capturing what I wanted. I requested something similar to the drag queen Bianca del Rio. Minerva is a woman that loves make up so much. She also love big puffy hair :)

    52. Does anyone have both the Star model and Star female bodies? I'm trying to decide which one to go for and wanted to know if the only difference is the star female body being slightly thinner measurement wise. I really like the poseability of the Star model body that I've seen so far, and the Star female body looks good too, but I want to be sure they're on the same level when it comes to posing!

      • x 3
    53. I personally don't have the normal 62 but I'm pretty sure they are v similar with slight differences. The fifth photo here is p good at showing the differences :) Impldoll on Instagram: "1/3 Female basic body coming soon,we will release in March.❤️❤️ #impldoll #bjd #bjddoll #bjdphoto #bjdphotography #bjdmakeup #bjdfaceup #dollmakeup #dollfaceup #dollpainting #fashiondolls #impldollbody #balljointeddoll #doll #dolls"

    54. Thank you! I was mostly curious about the thigh joints, since a video I found showed they have different ridges (the basic 1/3 having only one(?) ridge versus the star model body having around 4) but they seem to be able to hold the same / similar poses... :] Do you have the star model body? Do you find that you use the top most ridges for any poses, or mainly the lower ones?

      • x 2
    55. I have two of them and uh I think if you want to have her like really do some crazy shit the thigh joint grooves are helpful. Their jointing system now is super solid so either of the two would be a good investment. When I have my muscle body in I can give more of my thoughts then :)

      • x 3
    56. So, I really like the new muscle body and Moira head but I collect primarily realistic dolls (iplehouse and SartoriaJ). I've checked measurements and the body and head are a similar size to my big SartoriaJ girl, it's just the heads appear to be shaped differently and I'm not sure if that will bother me or not. Does anyone have a picture of an impldoll girl next to a SartoriaJ girl? :3nodding:

Eta: Also, I've read the wait times can really vary. Does ordering a face up make a big difference in wait times?

    57. @Loganberry MaleficentMrsofEvil had shared pictures of an Iplehouse hybrid a few pages back you can reference. In my opinion, the torso looks well-proportioned. However, it’s the arms and calves that will look proportionately lanky if that bothers you.

      • x 2
    58. It isn't to hybrid. I have a SartoriaJ SD and I just like my dolls to look in proportion next to each other. I know the Moira head and SartoriaJ heads are the same circumference but from pics it looks like SartoriaJ heads are longer and the impldoll heads rounder.

      • x 2
    59. Ah, I see! Moira is a very beautiful sculpt, but she is a lot more stylized than the average IH and SJ sculpt. If you love her, I say go for it! Like people in real life, we come in all shapes and sizes :)

    60. Relieved that my 68 idol body came in after the USA x China tariffs and shipping ban debacles. It's so pretty and goes well with the head I wanted it for!! I am anticipating some minor fomo I'm going to feel for the upcoming 68 model version... I really like the wider shoulder look.

The body is in mia white skin, the head is luts white skin(I think year 2020). I think it's a near perfect match, the luts head looks like it has a shade is beige compared to the body imo. I did have to slightly mod the head neck hole because it did not sit well on the body's 10" neck. I really prefer this neck size vs the 9"- Sometimes you just got to make things 'work' *_*
