IMPL dolls Star, Model and Idol Discussion thread 14

Sep 24, 2019

    1. I agree with @shirahime , @AntarelNefertili , that sounds so cool, playing your piano with an audience of your dolls :D Love the pictures! It's nice to see the full outfits :D

I've chosen to NOT count my dolls, after the last time I counted....

      • x 2
    2. @IngieBee Just remember when counting dolls that the formula is:
      6 micros=1 SD
      4 tinies (21cm or less)= 1 SD
3 tinies (up to 30cm)=1 SD
      2 MSD= 1 SD
Anything over 70cm and you can count them as dependants since they're toddler-size *nods*.

      • x 5
    3. That's a good formula, but could we update

3 tinies (up to 30cm)=1 SD

      to

3 tinies (up to 40cm)=1 SD

      • x 2
    4. Sure! I don't have tinies over 30cm so didn't think to bump it to the 40cm range.

    5. There are quite a few dolls on the 33-38 cm range now! I like the size!

    6. My current favourite is the 50-ish cm boys. Portability of an MSD, sculpting like an SD. Clothes/shoes are a pain in the butt to find if you don't make your own though.

      • x 2
    7. The 50-ish cm boys are getting quite popular. Clothes should get easier to find! Sartoria J is one source and I would imagine there are clothes on esty also.

    8. Clothes, I'm generally good with as I make 98% of my guys stuff (all sizes, not just the 50's). Shoes... shoes are the bane of my dolling existence. Most of my guys go barefoot because I can't find them what they need.

    9. You guys are so funny

    10. @IngieBee Agreed. this thread!

@chalyss Damn! That's a shame about the old sculpts...there were some fun ones. I really wanted to get Manner so I could make her over like Cher

@Girrl Her lips could break hearts

@shirahime I...just moved into a larger house and all of my dolls (All 20+) are sitting in the corridor. I've used the entire wall as a weird hybrid diorama. The Bigs have a shelf, the MSDs and YoSDs are on two. If I get any more, they're just going to take over the human furniture.

@AntarelNefertili I love your couple. They're such a handsome pair, such a sweet family too. And against the piano they're also kinda imposing.

      • x 2
    11. I used to think 30 would be my limit, anything over that is just ridiculous! But as other world creators can attest to, you don't have a world with only 30 people! More characters means more plots, subplots and resolved threads! Filled plot holes! More culture development! Of course, that doesn't mean each and every character needs to be shelled... or remain shelled in my home. I dunno. What's a good number? I guess if I forgot I even had the doll, I may not actually be that attached. Culling is hard, though... I hate the culling time. :( I got down to one tiny and one MSD and for a long while I had no MSDs. I do have a good 2 dozen Barbie dolls but I don't count them in my doll numbers.

LOVE the idea of having an audience on a piano! And the idea of a group photo. Maybe one day I can try that. It'd be a project!

@shirahime, *LOL* Impressive isn't what people usually call the sight of so many dolls- they seem to think it's terrifying. I don't get it. Maybe cuz so many are 70cm+..? Like they could do bigger damage if they came alive? I sure wish they would come alive- I'd put them to work!

    12. Oh gods, if every character I had demanded a resin shell my apartment would be home to nothing BUT dolls. I'd need to find someplace else to live just so I wasn't climbing over dolls. Even just sticking with the main and secondary characters that play a large role in stories would easily have the numbers well over the 300 range. Considering that out of all the dolls I have now only 4 are secondary characters (but important story-wise)... Yeah, I'd be buried in dolls. Not that I can see that as an entirely bad thing...

      • x 1
    13. @AntarelNefertili Oh your dolls are gorgeous. I remember you posting those two. I've always admired and they do look quite impressive on the piano bench!

@Iron_Dog I do hope you are able to do another group shot one day of your dolls. I've never tried one myself with my collection. I keep saying one day but one day hasn't come yet! And I like your formula. If I did it that way, it makes me feel a lot better about the number!

@A Wee Tiefling I daresay collections do get that way, somehow they end up spread across your house. My other doll lines are a bit like that but they are a deal smaller than the resin dolls!

@nancy_schroeder_ca I have to admit to being lured by the 50cm size myself. I'd love if Impldoll went into that size. I have one OT doll that is about 52-54cm and she's hard to dress for because she's also pretty slender but she feels so portable compared to my SDs. If they didn't weigh a ton, I might consider taking them out and about.

@chalyss What is it with people thinking dolls come alive at night? I find it amusing and like you could only wish they would so I could get them to do all my housework for me! I've had comments that my dolls are creepy. I think it's that whole, "they look too human like" thing. It bothers some of the people I know who are not in the hobby. I collect other doll lines as well and I never put their numbers in otherwise I'd be looking at over 100! This is why I have so many display cabinets. Although I ran out of room and had to put some of them in the cupboard in my craft room.

I hear you about shelling characters. Right now I have two major stories, one is an urban-fantasy genre and the other one is a high-fantasy genre. I've recently managed to clothe most of them in fantasy garb. I only have one left to do. The problem is stories have so many characters, I have to restrain myself from shelling more than necessary. I've managed to just shell the main characters for both storylines. My Impldoll Christopher is actually three characters in one. I used the concept of the Triple Goddess to embody her character. She's the one and only divine being in my story so far. Tempted to get another two divine beings but ... cabinet space. It's frustrating.

      • x 1
    14. I only have 4 boy dolls, and I want more, but girl dolls keep creeping in! Now I have a collection of heads again as well!

If only I'd stick to a plan!

      • x 1
    15. @shirahime 50's are a great size as far as portable goes when compared to SD's, especially the 70cm ones which get heavy fast when you're lugging them anywhere. I've gone to a con with 2-70cm dolls (because I'm crazy) and my arms and shoulders hated me after just an hour. Malachite (Ziv, model line) is 58cm so pushes that limit hard but I'm looking forward to getting him home even if clothing him means I'll need to make yet another round of doll specific patterns *sigh*. Ultimate portables are the mature tinies and I have quite a few of those, too, but I think they're a bit harder to find.

Malachite is part of my Divine Worship World and he is a god. He's the God of Crystals & Stone. 14 of the 28 SD's I own are gods. 1 MSD is a god (out of 14) and 3 out of 19 tinies are gods although 1 of them is the child version of Malachite so count that however you want.

      • x 2
    16. @shirahime Oh, you're brave! I have to focus on one story line at a time or I'd be... well, the dolls would have my bed and I'd have an old computer chair. I REALLY want to shell another story line I've had since I was 12, but I really just cant. I don't have room for display cabinets, I wish I did, but most of my dolls are literally standing around, leaning against things and each other (no one has a formal stand to aid them).

Funnily enough, my 3 nephews whom I live with (ages 12 to 17), all think my dolls are cool. I call them big action figures and that seems to help. They ask me their names and stories and admire their costumes. I've even had to ask their help to hold a doll while I string a massive one. Anyone who doesn't live directly with me finds them intimidating and creepy. I think it's parental influence. *L* And the glass eyes some have that seem to follow a person across the room. And gosh, that's smart to make one doll 3 in one! *L* I have often fantasized about a character who can switch heads like one might shoes so I have a reason for all the rolling heads and an excuse to get more. I may still try that...

I have no divine beings in any of my story lines, not to shell. But I have been trying to find an excuse for 50cm mature dolls and I think I have one now, but that's just a slippery slope. Still... I want some!

      • x 2
    17. @chalyss It was a highly greased slope the day you got the first one. That aside, 50's are awesome!

      • x 2
    18. Oh, don't encourage me! *covers eyes* I shouldn't kid myself, I'll look into them... I need to be sated with the big SDs, at least for awhile, first tho. And I feel I am getting there.

      • x 2
    19. I would also love if impl joined the fashion minis. I have always felt most comfortable with MSD and the fashion minis are my current favorite.

      • x 1
    20. They are working on it! They plan to bring out a fashion line with all new sculpts.

      • x 1
    21. @chalyss Why would you tell me this?! Is it payback for the 50's are awesome comment? My wallet is screeching that I didn't need to know a very accommodating company that does custom resin colours is working on bringing out a new line in my favoured size.

      • x 3
    22. Hey wasn't there a photo a ways back in these threads of the old (super-skinny and long torso) and newer (not all the joints) Star girl bodies together? I have the old one and I'm interested in getting one the newer ones, but I was curious about the heights. Are they the exact same height? Or are the newer stars taller?

And @AntarelNefertili did I see that you have the newest with all the joints? How does she work? It is easy to pose her or are the joints a little on the finicky side?

      • x 1
    23. OK, kill me now, or my hubby will....,:doh

@VampireAngel13 I am not sure, I could measure my star girl for you when I get home?? But beware, the neck is a lot larger, so you'd have to modify it.

      • x 2
    24. MUWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!! *evil villainous chortles!!* PAY BACK IS MINE!!!!!!!!!!

*cough cough* That is... whatever do you mean, my dears? I would never..! Never!

@VampireAngel13, there IS a size difference! The old willowy Star is 63cm and considerably leaner than the new Star which is more along the lines of an Iplehouse. Think Resin Soul for the old bodies. The necks are different by 1.5 cm, too. Also, restringing the new mobility girl gets you some great poses! I posted some back a page, but I'll add a link again here. Follow this link and look around the album. She's fun! But hot glue suede her.

Leaner old Star body with new Star head
      .

And here is the pic from @fishcake: oStar, nStar and Idol:

I forgot to mention that someone here does a gorgeous nStar Azalea head on the oStar body in red... this combo can work but there's the neck gap as shown in the pic I linked to above.

AND I forgot to mention that to my naked eye, the MGB does seem a tad leaner than the regular nStar body, but the jointed torso fits perfectly on the Idol and nStar bodies, so one could just switch those out with impunity except for possibly color matching. I need to compare the MGB with the nStarGB soon. The extra thigh joint (swivel) is nice on the MGB as well, but suede that puppy or it'll give you fits. (Looking again, I see MAYBE the thighs are leaner, maybe, but the torso and trunk are not.)

    25. Thank you! But I am good with the photo @chalyss posted! that was what I was hoping for!

that it exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you! Yeah I like the curves on the newer bodies, which is why I was thinking of upgrading. I don't really have a problem with the old one, but my other two big girls are Dollmore and Iplehouse, so she's sort of a waif next to them XD
I might decide to keep her at this height though. I really wish she was even shorter, but any smaller and her head will be too big (she's a hybrid, and could actually use a bigger neck lol so that would be a plus)

The new body does look nice! I'm super in to all those joints.

I'll have to think about it for a while. It's possible all the bodies I'm eyeing will make her significantly taller, so she'll just stay as she is XD
At least she's got clothes that fit! My SID girl is a pain. She huge.

      • x 2
    26. As long as the line is some time off, I should be okay. Maybe. I just agreed to buy a doll and I still need to order the body for Qayin, I've got Malachite (the Ziv) in production as well as his son, Kyrielesion (the free Teno) and I'm waiting for a DV body for Malachite's adopted son, Kheima. Lots of doll stuffs going on in my life right now. My wallet is weaping softly and asking why I keep hurting it so.

      • x 2
    27. @IngieBee I have a similar problem. I went into the hobby wanting mostly male dolls and then I ended up with more female dolls instead for some reason!

@chalyss Trust me, if I had the finances, I'd be shelling characters from more than 2 stories! I usually have a few stories spinning around in my head. I actually have a little notebook with all the story ideas I want to write. Strangely enough though, I have completed writing one novel (it's been sitting in a draft format waiting a rewrite) and I never even thought about shelling characters from that story. No idea why though.

@Iron_Dog @chalyss I'm hanging out to see what the Fashion line is like myself. When I last emailed and spoke with Impldoll about their planned fashion line, they indicated that they would hopefully have the first of the line released by the end of the year but they didn't say definitely so they may or may not.

I'm a bit bummed though that the Model line hasn't yet had any new sculpts in a while or a body upgrade. I was hoping maybe they could do a smaller version of the new Star body for that line with new face sculpts. I can handle the 58cm line more easily than the bigger dolls. Even my Christopher girl is sometimes a bit big for me but because she's so slender on the old Star body, it doesn't feel as much if that makes sense! I am still really loving Lydia though. I'm sure there won't be an issue if my dolls happen to spill out to random places around the house right?

I thought I saw that you had that newer fully jointed body @chalyss ? The one with the neck joint as well. Or was that @AntarelNefertili ? I am fascinated by that body a lot. Not sure I would ever buy it myself but I'm strangely fascinated by it and love seeing posing photos of that body.

      • x 2
    28. @shirahime, yes, they told me too that they were gonna revamp their model line, but look at all they have going on! I know they have 2 sculptors, maybe down to one now, not sure, but they have a line of Chinese generals planned (16 possible), the Fline, all their new releases, making the muscle Idol legs, eventually doing a slimmer 70cm male body (not for this year, it's just bookmarked), and various other projects. It's like they exploded! Lydia is gorgeous! I have a head of her on a Classy doll body. It'd be nice to see a few of the existing sculpts be shrunk to Fline size, but that's not their intention.

Dolls spilling out all over the place is the sign of a the most wonderful kind of infestation! (I don't know of a single writer who has only ONE world. They're addictive to create! However, I also feel no pull or need to shell all of them. I'd be soooo just... drowning in dolls if I did that! and I've only ever attempted 2 of my worlds, but I can't afford that at the same time. So when my energies went into my most recent one, I stopped shelling the older one and focused on the one on my mind most. But that did lead to me re-purposing established characters from the other world and THAT has lead to some weirdness in my own head. Which does NOT need more weirdness.)

Both I and AntarelNefertili (that is THE hardest name to type!) and IngieBee I think, have the MGB. It's a very cool body and while it isn't The End All, Be All of posing bodies, it IS fun and I see myself with a few of them in the future. It suits my Edria head nicely thanks t those wider shoulders. I'll post more of her just cuz i like looking at her!

    29. I agree about the creating worlds thing. I've got 4 main ones but the one that's getting all the attention right now is Divine Worship. I find it kinda goes in waves. My waves usually last for quite some time. I'll play in a world for about 10 years or so before needing a break from it and moving to fool around in another world.

      • x 2
    30. Yes! Waves is a good way to put it. Long waves. 10 or 15 years sounds about like me too. I'll still dabble a bit in the old one, but not shell anything. Goodness, I am hyperventilating just thinking about that! trying to shell them all... *faints*

      • x 1
    31. Yeah, shelling everybody would be... I'd need a house just for the dolls. Not everybody clamours to be shelled for me either, for which I'm grateful. But I get surprised by who demands to be shelled. I never thought I'd get Malachite as an adult version but this story just... happened. That's also how I ended up getting Ji-Sun (SD Juhl). Both of them are because of Qayin (BiDoll CS). I saw his head and just had to buy him. From there it was a wickedly short short trip to finding and buying Ji-Sun, who is a sculpt I've always loved and wanted but didn't know who he was. Same thing with Malachite. I've adored the Ziv sculpt since I first saw him but had no idea who he was and tried a couple of different characters but no of them ever stuck. Once I figured out it was Adult!Malachite, everything just fell into place.

    32. @VampireAngel13 Yepyep, I was one of the first who jumped when Impl first released the MGB! Adhara was practically the poster girl for that body for a while. XD I really adore its poseability, although do note that without any modding whatsoever, her shoulder joints are quite wide and could only move up and down (no forward-back movement). I agree with @chalyss's assessment: while not the ultimate holy grail of posing, it has its own charms. I practically couldn't live without the neck joint now, honestly.

I finally decided to reveal some of the previously, errrr, unpublicized shibari shots to help further illustrate the good balance of poseability and aesthetic of the MGB.

      • x 3
    33. I haven't done it yet, but I do want to take the arms apart and drill deeper into those shoulder joints. Or perhaps the whole ball and socket could be made more shallow? Or maybe it has to be the way it is??? But the only doll I know of with better movement is the Pasha Pasha doll. And frankly only the Pasha could pull off those joints, because they really look like the legs of a spider, her arms. Now don't get me wrong. I love Pasha Pasha dolls, I'd get one if I could afford one, but I also like that Impl made a more aesthetically pleasing for normal version (at the cost of extra movement) because, really, normal heads could never look right on a Pasha Pasha! They are perfect works of art that really, IMHO, can't be hybridized.

So anyway, I love how you guys use dolls to build your world's, and render the characters real. I so wish I could do that!! I really love reading how you discover characters, and have a pull to bring them into the fold of the plot, or agonize over how to bring an OC to life. It's really cool :)

      • x 2
    34. Very true. As much as I wanted to try one, I couldn't afford it when they first came out. I could only stare in longing at your amazing girl (gorgeous shibaru shots!)... Just as I was about to buckle, Sicktress traded me for hers and I was so excited! I hate waiting. :( The neck joint is super cool and because of it, if you got a doll head that didn't have the greatest mobility on the neck, for whatever reason, it wouldn't really matter.

+HAPPINESS! Impldoll WILL be doing this for the boys too eventually! SUPER exciting!

@IngieBee Yes, I agree! Like Pasha Pasha or Doll Chateau... jointy like that, but not fashion doll proportions, which is awesome because I don't collect fashion dolls. I collect action figures.

That kind of agony, discovery and creativity is why we do it! I used to be able to draw my characters, and that was awesome. But this... this is a 3D sculpt of it! poseable, moveable, changeable, it's own challenge! While many do it, it's not for everyone. I LOVE the way BblinkK/Blankqueen used hers... no set stories, just all actors in her bit of story at the time. She used them to enact a scene, then they changed completely. I think she's off DOA for awhile now, but she has a lot of Impldolls and is a GREAT resource site! Plus, she's one of the nicest, sweetest people ever!

    35. Yes, and part of that is costuming. I've always wanted to do picture stories, but I can't write stories :(. But I still want to do them (pout)

      • x 2
    36. You don't have to write them. Like with BblinkK, she just had an idea, a piece, and acted it out. BUT she and her father are VERY handy with props and costumes, so yes, she has some extravagant stuff, mostly hand made. I'd LOVE to do what she does but alas... my talents lie not in those areas. I can barely glue two popsicle sticks together!

    37. Yes, those are beautiful pictures. I don't think I've ever seen them before! :thumbup

    38. Hello there! I received my first (and probably not my last) Impldoll today! I can see why they're so popular now! I'm also super excited because my girl is a great match with my Vindoll (for a while I was worried that I'd never find a good match proportion-wise). Anyways, the only issue with my girl (other than her needing a cleaning and restringing) is that I have no clue what her sculpt is. :sweat

I didn't get a chance to take more pictures of her body, but I think it might be an older Star body with the thigh joints because she appeared to be 61cm tall with my measuring tape.

      Picture on my Instagram

Does anyone recognize the sculpt? <3

      • x 1
    39. Hello and welcome!

My first thought is she's on a model body, but those are definitely shorter than 61cm, though the Star should be 63cm. That could depend on the head size, too, but-- I must say you have me stumped. I have no idea which sculpt that is! She's cute though.... I like her! I'd love to see her in a wig soon! (hint to spam more pics)

    42. Thanks everyone! I'll definitely try and get some more pictures!

It's possible it's just my measuring tape is off, I have two and they're quite different for measurements. XD

There's so few photos of Cymie floating around but it's very close! :aeyepop:

    43. OMJ! Blast from the past!! I haven't seen those dolls in AGES! Cymie i don't think I ever saw an owner's pic of, very rare. Nice work, @Arekushia! She is super cute and has a face that could either be made quite realistic or more interpretive. Wow. I bet those molds are long gone now and not viable. Yeah, that page is from 2009? How they have changed!

    44. @Azael She's so adorable! Another person on team older Impl haha! I look forward to seeing her dressed and wigged!

I make so many characters that I've decided I'm not allowed to shell them all. There is one story I'm allowed 3 of the main characters (none are shelled yet), and another where I'm only allowed to do the baddies. Then there is my self contained story that didn't exist before the dolls but they're my bargin bin dolls that I couldn't pass up because of the price! So they all live together and do their thing. Other than that, I'm trying to keep the rest of my characters in check, though I know I'll eventually overspend and start shelling indiscriminately. And there's a few that don't fit anything but I want them really bad. I need to stop rationalizing this behavior. :sigh

    52. You guys have no idea how great it is that this thread is so active! But then I can't keep up because y'all be chatting and I can't respond to everything!

I'm kinda glad they're not doing the fashion line right away (and they better put new heads on them...if I find I have a couple of giant Idols around when I could get them in miniature...I'll be pissed)

@AntarelNefertili Damn I love that couple. Those shots are steamy and do a good job selling the new body. Posing! Important!

@Azael Super jealous. I love the old sculpts, I think they'd be fantastic for a skilled FU artist since they're so unique.

Whoever shared the website with all those gorgeous dollies has given me doll envy by proxy! They're all so pretty and more importantly, so f-ing well styled. I HATE trying to find accessories for my bigguns. Right now only worrying abut three makes it easier.

      -

I made myself a rule (which I break regularly because chaotic evil wev) and that is to only shell characters I either RPed because they meant something to me, or shell characters from stories who really really meant something emotional. No shelling whole casts, that'd be unfair to my wallet. And if I get a doll that doesn't have a character, they better get one quick or I flip them. (Had to do that to a soulkid. He's financing my new Tony). If I'm keeping myself honest, all my MSDs are the AU child versions of my planned adult characters, which makes it a bit easier to keep a handle on who belongs in what size...but not helping me decide who gets shelled next.

    53. Wahahaha, I only publicly revealed those rope bondage shots several days ago because the photoshoot as a whole was too steamy for public consumption. I picked only the safest ones to show (the rest are only available by request from the local BJD community), or I may get banned on several platforms in one fell swoop. :sweat

I really envy those who have the means and capacity to makes such detailed photoshoots! Even though all of my current crew sans one have their characters used (or will be used) in tabletop RPGs, I have a better time drawing them (like this piece I posted on IG) as they ought to appear rather than style them as they ought to look (like this recent take). Finding the right props and accessories is one thing, but where do I find a local setting that could pass off as a beautiful fantasy landscape? :(

Oh boy, the "shell-only-those-that-have-characters" rule! So far I've managed to break it only once. Although technically, my most recent arrival (a LoongSoul not on-topic for this subforum) is pushing it because he and his twin sister aren't of the same sizes ...at least not yet! I'm sure I can find a good in-betweener body for hybriding her head, and so the cycle begins again. :XD:

      EDIT:
Just so I won't double-post, here's a little dose of cute. The oldest doll in the crew still in the original shell just celebrated his birthday today, and the cat sent her greetings.

    54. Well, if you live in Southern California like I do, there are NO fantasy locations unless you like the desert :doh

Seriously though, those are amazing drawings, and you have really captured your characters amazingly well! @AntarelNefertili !!!

Say, does anyone know if imple skin changed a few years ago? If so, in what way please? Thank you

      Also, search this on YouTube:
" creating a scene for action figure photography "

Because these people make amazing props! We'd have to make it MUCH bigger though :doh. And Fairyland has made some videos of their photography sessions with their elaborate sets

    55. @AntarelNefertili your drawings are gorgeous. I'm envious of your skill. Shelling only existing characters is my doll purchasing rule. I've still wound up with 63 dolls. It really only prevents me from impulse buying, which going by current numbers, would make my doll situation so much worse than it is.

    56. Thank you @IngieBee and @Iron_Dog! It's just recently I managed to break a really bad case of artblock (one that lasted nearly three years). It's unhealthy to keep drawing only for clients and none for yourself. D:

I'm pretty sure there are some settings that would appreciate a good desert! I'm just a run-of-the-mill city girl; pretty much the most scenic I could push for a (relatively) nearby doll setup would be an old Spanish fort that would require me to plod through lots of traffic jams to get to.

I only have resin samples of RS (or at least matched to RS) from 2016 onwards. Is that to your interest? The Guoren/Adhara pic in my previous post shows two variants, but I could post a better comparison if needed. The lighting in the photo doesn't show the difference well enough.

And @nancy_schroeder_ca, I've always been at two minds about those backdrops because it takes a lot of fiddling to not make things look unnatural. Or I dunno, I just expect too much from my photoshoots, haha!

    57. Thank you @AntarelNefertili, but I think I will save up and play it safe by getting a body I know will match. In this case, it's just easier and I don't have to scrape up funds, just get it when I 've saved up. Thanks anyways :D

    58. I use binder clips to clip them to a firm backing. I have a large piece of poster board that I reinforced with wood strips n the back. Or foam core board should work. Gatorboard is very stiff if you can get it. It is available in large sizes which is nice if you can buy it locally. If you can find someone who does large format printing, I was thinking you could paint your own background!
