IDEX (International Doll Expo) April 11 -14 2013

Jan 19, 2013

    1. I don't know if this is the right place to post this, so if it's wrong please delete it and so sorry for the mistake >_<

So IDEX convention is taking place in about two weeks and I would love to know who's comming! ^^

    2. Oh, sorry >__< I saw it but though it was just an "info post", not to say people who are comming. Thank you so much!!!

    3. Is there an AE of some sort for the one-offs Volks has released?

    4. No, they are only being offered at IDEX. The Volks blog posts about the one-offs (Part 1, Part 2) explain how to enter for one. You must attend the event to win the chance to buy one.

    5. Okay Thanks! I read somewhere that if there were extras there might be an AE.
Also, typically, how often does Volks hold lotteries?

    6. Dolpas occur approximately 3-4 times a year. Generally there is a lottery with each one, but the number of dolls available from each Dolpa varies.

    7. It sounds like you might be confusing one-offs with regular limited dolls. One-offs are *single* dolls. There are no multiples of them, therefore no extras. With Volks limiteds, they are usually available via lottery through either VolksUSA and/or Volks International after Dolpa events. There are several Dolpas a year in Japan, so several chances for the limiteds that are specific to each Dolpa. If the limited dolls do not sell out both at the event and during the After Events, they'll be available to purchase on a first-come first-serve basis through Volks International. I'm pretty sure there is a thread somewhere that explains this all, though I'm not sure exactly where.

    8. Thanks so much! So I take it the one-off Charlottes from Kobe are all long gone by now then haha

    9. There only would have been one Charlotte made (unless there were different one-offs using the same sculpt), so almost definitely. Anybody lucky enough to get the chance to buy a one-off doll who had the money available would be crazy not to take it, since even if they hated the doll they could just sell it for a profit. (I have to suspect that this is the fate that befalls most one-off dolls...)

As for the limiteds, my suspicion is that any extras will end up at the Los Angeles Sumika and will be available to people who actually go to the store, or who happen to know they've got them and contact Volks USA directly to order them. That's what I've seen happen with other leftover limiteds in the past.

    10. Sorry for the bother, but which limiteds will there be at IDEX? Besides the one-offs. Would that just be Megohime?

    11. Haha, my luck with lotteries are so bad, I'm certain I won't get anything even if i entered for all of them. I am also pessimistic about Saturday nights charity raffle draw, I never win in such draws in the life of me.

I decided to attend IDEX because of Zawieruszynski and Ping's Originals, not BJDs. I did not expect Volks to stage a dolpa with so many of my favorite LEs. As such, I have to shift focus to AsianBJDs. Besides Reisner, I like DD Natsuki and Yo-SD Bontenmaru.

      keepcalmcollectdolls Here are the LEs

      http://site.volksusa.com/blog/2013/03/28/additional-special-items-for-idex2013/

They allowed for pre-order of SGou Beast Claude but the pre-order is closed. Beast will be on display and for sale on site if they have extras.

    12. Thank you so much!

    13. I'm still hoping that Volks will announce an MSD (or SDC or MDD) before the show.

I'm sure i'll do plenty of shopping at the show besides at Volks, but that would just make my weekend even more better! :)

    14. I think an SDC is something i don't think i could pass up if they have them there :3

    15. I am doomed, doomed and doomed some more......first it's Reisner, now there's this Ryoma guy. No money for shopping anything else, might even starve to death. I had wanted to meet Toni's Collectibles because they are retailers for Plusczok and Zawieruszynski with flexible layaway plans. I really did not decide to attend IDEX because of BJDs but I love my Volks boys. If they drag out Reisner, I'd be sooooo there! 9am Friday. *_*

    16. LOL! I am also doomed...thankfully I've already got my confirmation for my Beast "Vincent", but one of those One-Offs is looking at me, and that's never good for my wallet! ;) And that Romeo Saki guy (Sakamoto Ryoma)...see once you actually name them, and post something of a backstory mention them in conversation...trust me, YOU ARE DOOOOOOMMMED! Bwahaha!

And I must also put in a plug for Yo-SD Bontenmaru too! I have this cranky little warrior dude and he is wonderful! For me, this little guy has more attitude than any other YoSD, and mine is appropriately named "Hero Imperious". Be warned though, he will try to boss around any other doll you own. ;)

      Juli :)

    17. I am already so very doomed, and I don't think they are near finished unveiling the pretties.

Since some of us (read: me) will only be at IDEX on Saturday, does anyone want to have a little meet-up? Possibly in the hotel lobby? Maybe the lounge? I think around 1pm would be a good time since it's around lunch but after eating. Suggestions?

I don't know the layout of the hotel, but it would be wonderful if we could gather earlier in the day to sit and pose the dollies before doing more shopping and workshops.

I'm also going to put my DOA username on either my entry badge or on another name tag since I wasn't smart enough to put it on my IDEX registration. :doh

    18. We planned to meet up at the hotel lobby at 6pm on Friday hopefully there is still some daylight for a group photo and then have dinner together and play with our dollies.

I am not sure about Sat 1pm though. I have a medical appointment with the dollie doctor at that time! Some of you can meet up though. The hotel lobby is an open space. So a group of people carrying BJDs cannot be missed. If you check out the hotel's website, there's even a Starbucks at the lobby.

My 2 muscle guys fell down and need medical attention. :o This is one main incentive for me to attend IDEX, Volks has a dollie doctor on site.

I can see my Little Rock (YO-SD Isao) fighting with Bontenmaru, they both have attitudes.

    19. I can make time pretty much any time Friday and Saturday for meets. :) I am going to the dinner Saturday but have no plans aside from that and being at the Volks booth briiiiiight and shiny Friday morning, haha. Whatever's decided I am pretty alright with and can most likely make it to. :3

    20. Thanks for the info, stargazer_i! I may be there before/after 1pm depending on how tired I become from feverishly walking here and there and here again.

Awesome, Syndal_lynn! I think I may just hunker down near the Starbucks once my feet grow tired (usually early afternoon), so stop on by! Or if anyone else feels like doing the same earlier, that's fine by me, too. :)

    21. Ill probably just find a nice spot to sit once i get tired of shopping~

    22. My husband decided he didn't want to come (since I'm not getting a car and he wouldn't have freedom of roaming), so I will be shopping and looking for other doll people. The dinner meet on Friday night should be fun! Hoping to see lots of folks with their limiteds from the Volks booth!

    23. Is it next week yet?! I just can't wait. I am dying to see the Volks people again. They are so wonderful! I have been peeking at the one-offs. The Alice took my breath away. I can't stop thinking about her. That white skin and brown eyes and her faceup is perfect. I love her outfit too. I can't wait to see what else they are bringing. They are so generous to be donating all those dolls to the charity auction. Are we there yet?!

    24. Oh! I thought of something I wanted to ask, though this might be better on the list. The BJD dinner is a Disco theme, is there a specific dress code otherwise? I'm trying to decide what all to pack and wanted to throw in a dress, but didn't want to be either over or under dressed. :XD:

    25. InvisibleWings:I don't think there is an official dress code. It is a banquet so I would wear something nice. I think some people might be "dressing up" 70's style. Not me. I am not into disco and never was. LOL... . I am probably going to wear some kind of sundress.

    26. So I've been obsessively refreshing the Volks USA blog just in case more goodies showed up, and I have not been disappointed!

They just announced some cool dealer outfits that will be available on Friday morning with the limited items, as well as some of their lovely kimono sets. :D

      http://site.volksusa.com/blog/2013/04/03/idex2013-special-collection/

Augh, why isn't it next week already! XD

    27. I can't believe it's almost time! Getting really excited and can't wait to meet all of you and see all the dollies!
I am going to put my DOA name somewhere on me as my nametag will just have my first name on it. Maybe we could add our DOA names below on the nametag?

    28. I am going to goto the mall this weekend and see if I can find some cool platforms and accessories for a 70's theme. If I can't i'll just wear a normal dress (nothing too fancy).

...and ooh, I want a Kimono Set!! Hope there's some left when I get there Friday (we won't be in town till around 2pm).

    29. I got some platforms to wear, I just hope that I don't topple over. It's been many years since my platform shoe days.

    30. That's exactly what I plan to do, too! I think it'll make it a whole lot easier to find each other, or to at least recognize each other when wandering about. :)

    31. Like Syndal_lynn I'm going to dinner on SAturday but have no plans aside from that so a meet up on saturday is fine by me. and yessss I will be super super super early at Volks, I want to buy Megohime >.< So badly! I want to purchuse a brand new volks doll more so in the yosd size. I hope I can!

Question? How many people are intrested in getting little Megohime? XD I'm sweating thinking that I'll be the last in line and everyone will buy her so this is mostly for my nerves but also out of curiosity.... But now what about the other dollies? my stress is now turned into pure curiosity lol.

    32. I have for some time now trying to envision how Friday morning is going to unfold with a group of us rushing to form a line in front of the Volks booth. I am not after Megohime.

Since the doors don't open till 9.00am, I am not sure if it makes sense to show up before 8.30am.

The Friday night meet up at 6pm is still on at the lobby. I am trying to survive Friday morning before thinking about Fri night and Saturday.

    33. The earlier you get there, the closer to the door you'll be when it opens. I'm guessing by 9am, there will be a small crowd waiting at the doors to get in. At previous shows, there was no line formed. But you do have to file in slowly since there may be only one person checking badges as you walk through the doors.

    34. Thanks Tintaglia. If only 1 or 2 people are assigned to check badges, then, attendees do need to form a line. Some conventions have multiple gate entrances. I am still not sure how "early" is early that I should be there. After entering the exhibition hall, we need to get to the Volks booth to form another line and it's that line that matters.

The disco party: I was 12-15 during disco era. Mini dresses, drop waist belts, long necklaces and high platform shoes. Proud of my figure, showed off skinny long legs. Now, I hide the legs, hips.....hide everything! Dress like my mom in the 70s and 80s :sweat

    35. I plan to be first in the registration line on Friday so I can then jump into the Volks line. :D

    36. Gahhhh....I'm probably the furthest thing from a morning person you're ever likely to encounter, but I too plan to be in line for IDEX registration early on Friday so I can enter and grab my sexy Beast first thing! :love I'm hoping to snag some alternate eyes for him too, and maybe some other goodies. I would only rouse myself for something to do with dolls, and the last time I lined up at the crack-of-OMG-why-am-I-awake was for Volks last NYC Dolpa! Ahhh...the things we do for love. ;)

As for the disco theme...I was "jail bait" in those days when my best friend and I would bs our way into a disco called Diamond Head in DC's Georgetown...wearing our glitter tube tops, Jordache jeans, Candi's platform shoes, and Bonne Bell Lip Smackers. ;) I'll at least be decked out with some Lip Smacker and a glittery top of some kind. :)

Juli DC--Who's perfectly approachable & friendly after she's had her coffee. :D

    37. Yeah i want to get there early because i still have to get the badge~ And i dont want to miss anything~

So far i don't plan on getting any of the dolls volks has announced~
but im hoping there will be lots of outfits and accessories i like~
also hoping there may be some dolls volks hasnt announced that i like :D

    38. I was trying to make a Disco themed outfit for one of my dolls... but that didn't work out. :(

However, I found a vintage skirt and top from the disco era so i'll be wearing that to the dinner. :)

(Tip: I needed platform disco shoes to go with the outfit, so I hit the mall... the "Jessica Simpson" line of shoes is almost all glittery platform type stuff. They sell the line at Macy's, and I got a pair at 65% off. I just hope I can actually WALK in them.)

@JuliDC- I had the jordache jeans and bonnie bell lipgloss as well as the farrah faucet hairdo. LOVED those jeans!!

    39. I'm, uhh, totally not dressing up in 70s style for the party, sorry! But it'll be fun to see all of you guys who do. :)

I'm so excited for this event! I'm driving up on Thursday and can barely stand to wait that long. XD I still have to pack of course, and also pack for my dolls! I'll be bringing two, and while I've picked out outfits for one of them already, I'm not sure if I'll just leave the other in the same outfit the whole time or not.

    40. Hello everyone, hope you don't mind me jumping in here at the last minute! I was so excited to hear that Volks was going to be at IDEX this year!! I've fallen in love with a couple of the one-offs and will be putting my name in for those! I will be driving down to Orlando from Ohio...arriving on Wednesday morning if all goes as planned. The 70's party will be a blast. I found a black dress that fits the theme & covers the things I like to have covered :-) No platform shoes yet, but I'll be hitting the mall in Orlando for those. I have been to IDEX the last couple of years & always enjoy it...I love Val Zeitler's things too. Her table always looks amazing & people do wait in line for her in the morning. Not sure how it will go with Volks, but the line will probably be longer this year.

    41. I just saw the booth numbering and floor plan for the exhibition. The yahoo group for the BJD party posted it. The entrance is not as wide and big as I had thought. Probably, there will be 1 or 2 people checking badges before we enter the exhibition hall. So, we might have to form a line outside the exhibition hall before 9am although it's the line inside in front of the Volks booth that matters.

I am thrilled to see that booth123 Volks is right next to booth121 Ping Original Art Dolls. Ping Lau, the artist grew up in Singapore like me. One main reason why I decided to attend IDEX is because I hope to meet her in person. While I don't collect life size child dolls, I greatly admire her courage to become a doll artist. Her dolls are lovely.

    42. On the IDEX Event site ( http://www.idexshows.com/ ), click on the "For Exhibitor/Buyor" tab, then go down and click on the "Exhibitor Welcome Kit" link. It opens a PDF file that includes a vendor list with table numbers, the show room map with table numbers and a map of the hotel.

The hotel map gives you a better idea of which door you want to enter in if your goal is to be at the Volks booth as quick as possible. I was at the hotel yesterday and there are two entrances to the show room floor. If the Volks booth is your goal, then you'll want to enter on the convention center side of the room (Registration & workshop rooms area), not the hotel side of the room which is marked as the "Show Room Entrance".

    43. Thanks Tintaglia, I see the full map now, there are indeed 2 entrances, one from the hotel and the other from the Convention Center. They need to post people to check badges at both the entrances. You know, some hotels do not allow congregation of crowd in front of the gates before the doors open, so I was worried we might not be allowed to wait in line early and going early would not be helpful but if the entrance from the Convention Center, they should allow people to gather early. Starbucks coffee is in the hotel entrance, I don't wake up until I've had coffee. So on Friday morning, first thing is to look for coffee! Canadians can't live without coffee.

The hotel lobby is large. On Friday night at 6pm, we can meet at the lobby for a short doll meet and informal dinner at Carnivale restaurant. I did not make reservations at the restaurant but they said it's large enough to accommodate many people. I am pretty stressed about Friday morning. If I don't catch that pirate boy, I am not sure if I'd be able to party at all. So, I had better get to the booth early.

    44. The area in front of the doors on the hotel side isn't close to the check in desk, so people hanging out there shouldn't be a concern. I expect most people will be waiting on the other side since they'll probably go from the Registration desk straight to the Show Room. The door opens into a hallway so it seemed a bit crowded yesterday because it was filled with parents and kids attending the FL Jr Karate(?) Championships.

The Volks booth appears to be closer to the convention area side of the room, not the hotel side. Good luck in catching that Pirate boy! :)

    45. That map is incredibly helpful. Now I can plan my venture more accurately. Hooray! And Volks has an easy booth number to remember, too. I got lost one time at a convention thinking a booth was 243 when it was 324 because numbers are never confusing. :sweat

I think I'll just bring two dolls since I don't have a room to rest in from carrying all the weight. Luckily, most of my girls can share things since they are similar sizes, so bringing a SD and a SDC should cover most of my shopping list needs. :)

      IS IT FRIDAY YET.

    46. oh nice, thanks for the exhibitor info.
I got my map all planned out on what to to make sure i visit :D
theres really only 5 places i want to visit so i will probably have a lot of free time~ :D

    47. I love the map, it is great to see where everything is. I can't wait for friday, I wish it was friday already too >.< I know I'm bringing my msd, but I don't know if I should bring another, a lot of my kiddos need new clothing and shoes hmmmmm lol.

    48. DollHeart just posted on their facebook page that a representative will be at IDEX again this year.

    49. neato! This is the same hotel that hosted Holiday Matsuri anime convention year one. The room before the convention area is huge! and you have to pass through there to get to where they are hosting the convention itself. so im assuming you will have to enter through to get to registration. i dont think the hotel will have a problem with folks hanging out. there is a large out door area, a resturant/deli, and theres a huge Fridays across the parking lot and some other resturants/stores on the other side of the hotel within walking distance. of course in Orlando theres always some where to go. This is a nice hotel though. I didnt stay there when i went to that convention. So keep in mind that you do have to pay for parking everytime you leave the parking lot, which is gated! i dont remember what the fee was. im thinking something like 5 dollars or something like that.

im thinking about attending... but its last minute and dont know if i have anyone willing to travel with me. :/ i had someone but they cant come... so im pondering over my possibilities. I would love to see volks in person thats for sure.

    50. It would be good to see you again kittywolf!! :)

I was told parking was $12 for self-parking, or $16 for valet at the hotel. (There may be cheaper parking nearby tho.)

    51. Unless they built something in the past few years its doubtful, and i doubt the near by stores would want their parking taken up like that. :P its not so bad. How much was registration? they dont have any at door prices?

    52. It was $15 for collector admission to the show.

    53. ah ok. i think when i went it was like 25 at the door... so somewhere in that price range then. :) thats good to know... doubtful i can go though. i really dont want to do a 4 hour drive by myself or stay in a cheap hotel by myself. :/

    54. Kitty, I hope you do decide to attend! I'm pretty sure you can still register at IDEX Shows online and I thought the hotel had something about there being parking in and outs available. I don't drive, so I didn't really pay attention to that. Anyway, it'd be great to see you and Volks is going to have some nice stuff... :D I'm just about to leave for Orlando myself, but am sending you a PM now. :) Juli

    55. I'm wishing you all a fantastic time at IDEX. I was hoping I could make it this year but is not meant to be. There is so much to see, specially Volks been there for the first time. Please make sure to tell them to come back next year. BE CRAZY, LOL! Do it for all of us that can't make the trip this year.

      Have fun!

    56. Anyone know if you can still buy the bjd mixer tickets at the door? All the pre reg is done. :/ I'm sure they will sell standard tickets but I was curious about the other events. If I do go I'd be attending Saturday and Possiably Sunday. Arriving in Orlando late Friday evening. :/ I just want to do the drawing panel on sat and see the expo/dealer room. I'd love to do the mixer (would love to have the Oppertunity to win a rei-tenshi) but I don't think I can afford that. :( I'm thinking this wont happen so I really really hope volks comes back next year so I have time to plan. *sighs*

    57. *sighs*i was so looking forward to going but the person was going with had to back out cuz of money issues. I really wanted to go....:( have fun for me everyone!

    58. If there is still room in the event, you can buy a ticket when you pick up your IDEX ticket at the registration booth.

For those that are unable to attend IDEX....
Angelic Dreamz is trying out Livestreaming at IDEX this year. They did a few test runs in their store.
      This is the link: http://new.livestream.com/accounts/3557200/LiveFromIDEX

    59. I'll see you all there!! (I'm so excited.)

I'll be arriving Friday afternoon, and carrying a bag that says "DiSpy" on it, so if you see me say "hi".

I'll be at the meetup friday after the show closes (in the lobby), and i'll try to come to the saturday afternoon one also (may be a bit late, going to have lunch first).

Anyone attending the saturday BJD dinner... i'll see you there!!

We have to leave before noon on sunday, so I hope that if they do the usual IDEX raffle on sunday it's before I have to leave.
