IDEX (International Doll Expo) April 11 -14 2013

Jan 19, 2013

    1. IDEX brings together manufacturers, artists, retailers, buyers, and collectors from all corners of the globe who share a love of dolls. Though dolls other than BJDs are represented (in addition to other collectables), there is a BJD presence.

Volks USA will be there, as well as DollStories, and many dealers. There are continuous teaching workshops taking place during the event.

      Location:
Doubletree by the Hilton at the entrance to Universal Orlando
5780 Major Blvd., Orlando, FL, 32819

This will mark the first time Volks has ever participated in this event.

    2. Thank you for posting this. So exciting!
I hope this is OK to post here. I am planning on going for the first time and would love to share a room with someone. I plan on going from April 11 (Thursday) until Monday April 15 (Monday) and staying at the Hilton Doubletree.

    3. I'm sure you've seen this, but the convention has set aside a block of rooms at the Doubletree for $134./night. And of course, it's right at Universal Orlando. So, lots of fun to be had!

    4. Has anyone seen any publicity from Volks about what they are planning on showing at the event?

    5. I have a room reserved. I am so excited to go. I saw that Ruby Red Galleria is also on the list.
Anyone looking to share a room please PM me.

    6. I'm actually interested but still unable to confirm if I can attend. If my work schedule permit, I will attend only on 12th and 13th April (Fri and Sat). I'd also like to stay at the Doubletree Hotel and share room with someone. I don't mind squeezing in for a night or two with a few people. :) I don't know the place very well, so it's good to have company.

I am disappointed Heidi Plusczok isn't listed. Zaweiruszynski dolls are interesting but they're big. Volks is listed and so is Berdine Creedy.

    7. I've missed having Volks dolpas for the past few years, and am definitely excited that they're going to be so close once again! I've already paid for my registration and plan on going Friday through Sunday. It'll be my first IDEX, too. I can't wait! :D

    8. I've never been to IDEX. Would Volks just have a booth, or would it be like a mini-dolpa?

    9. This is my second IDEX but its been quite a looong time.

Im super excited~ I already paid for my registration too~

Last time i went there were booths, like a dealers room at any other convention but full of dolly stuff xD

    10. So excited for Volks! I'll be in attendance but probably only for a day (most likely Saturday).

    11. I'm going to IDEX, and had no idea Volks would be there until I read it on their USA website today!:doh :D The event that actually pushed my over the edge to register is the FDQ sponsored Luncheon with my dear friend Mel Odom:aheartbea...but having Volks there too is just the cherry atop my sundae!

The person that was to have been my roomie has decided not to make trip afterall, so I'd love to have some nice person take their place in my hotel room. I'll be arriving on Wednesday, April 10th and departing on Sunday, April 14th. I'm perfectly human once I've had my coffee, so fear not because there are in room coffee makers! LOL! ;) My ideal roomie would be fairly neat, non-smoking, and up for having fun! I'm a social person, and even more so at events like this...as those of you who have hung out with me during the NYC Dolpas can undoubtedly attest! ;) I'm hoping to see lots of old friends and have already put out the invite to come play dolls in my room to some of them. So it this sounds like you, please contact me via PM or email if you'd like to save some dolly dollars by sharing my room and let's discuss it.

      Juli DC :)

    12. If I didn't lose my job I would have definitely planed on trying to get there. -_- It would be great if Volks decided to return for next year's IDEX..

    13. My guess is that Volks will have a booth for industry buyers, and possibly have items for retail to regular collectors in attendence. Their blog entry alludes to the possibility of something more, but IMHO time is growing short for them to have an event added to IDEX's agenda....unless they're not concerned having their thing overlap another breakout gathering or workshop. We'll see though, I'm just jazzed Volks folks will be there! :)

      Juli :)

    14. I have a question is anyone planing on bringing any of thier dolls with them. I ve never been to IDEX before would anyone want to set up a meetup during this event?

    15. I am probably going to be bringing a couple of my dolls and would love to meet up.

I am also still looking for a roomate to share my room at the Doubletree on all or some of the nights.

    16. It is looking very likely that I attend Idex in April instead of the Philadelphia Doll Convention in May. Arriving Thursday and leaving Sunday.

This is my first time in Idex and first time attending a modern doll convention. I am interested in Ping Lau, RubyRedGalleries, Toni's Collectables, Zaweiruszynski and Volks :). My other favorites like Ashton Drake Galleries (ADG), Heidi Plusczok and American Girl Dolls (AGD) are absent :(.

I would like to share room with someone. I should be alright for the dates unless something suddenly happens at work. Will book the flight soon. Time is running out for this.

If you guys are bringing your dolls, I shall do the same. I'm concerned with security. I'd most likely bring 1 full Volks doll and an extra head.

    17. really thinking about whether I can make the trip to Orlando to go to IDEX.. With VOLKS going should be even more fun, and I know alot of BJD fans will attend as well since these resin dollies have grown in popularity

    18. I'm bringing a doll for sure. I just can't go to a doll event without one. I'm deciding between a Volks Yo or MSD since they're smaller and easier to carry around.
      -Am

I've got my fingers crossed that you find a way to be there!

    19. I agree! I had already registered for IDEX and then found out Mel would be there. I'm doubly excited. Gene is very dear to me. She was the first doll I ever collected and in her own way introduced me to BJDs. Mel Odom & Volks - WOW!
      See ya there.
      -Am

    20. I'm planning on bring two dolls in my carry-on bag...my original Gene Red Venus doll and a small Volks doll. ;) I've already put the invite out to my fashion doll collecting friends to come & play dolls in my room, so I'd be happy to have a BJD meet-up there too! :)

Hi Theresa, Please check you email for a msg from me about possibly rooming together! ;) My PM box is crammed w/msgs I can't delete until a GO I joined concludes, hence my emailing you.

Oh Am...my dear I'm so happy to hear you'll be there! I'm soooo over the moon about seeing Mel and the unveiling of something that I have the feeling will make Gene fans like us very happy!!! :) Can't wait to see you either girl! BGHs!

      Juli DC :)

    21. I'm going to betray my ignorance here, but is there a sales/show floor that is accessible to the public that would be worth seeing, even if I can't stay? The workshops I'd be interested in are out of my budget at the moment, as is an overnight stay, but if there's really good stuff to shop, or collect dealer info from for later reference, I might be able to rationalize a day trip.

    22. I have attended three IDEx's in the past four years, your entrance fee will give you access to the exhibitor's booths were you can see their dolls in person and pick up brochures. I always ask first but you can often take photos as well. The entrance fee also gives access to the sales/retail room--there are amazing BJD's and items for them in there.

    23. I'll be attending IDEX with a good friend, (and fellow Gene and BJD collector) as well. We'll see ya'll there.

    24. I've been registered for a while now for this years' IDEX, and the BJD Dinner as well. Not selling anything this year, just coming to have fun! :)

Will be there late Friday (it's a long drive from ATL where I am living now), and stay till closing on Sunday.

Can't wait to see everyone again!! (I missed going last year sooo much.)

SUPER Excited to see Volks! ...and hoping they will have lots of neat stuff for sale.

PS- I'll be bringing dolls (always do), and am going to enter in the contest at the dinner as well.

    25. DiSpy When you say BJD dinner, do you mean the Friday night Debut of Dolls and Diamond Awards Cocktail & Banquet or are you referring to some other dinner? I think there's a party organized by Angelic Dreamz on Saturday night. I have not signed up for any dinner or tea events but feel like signing up for the Friday night dinner. Not sure if that is open to general attendees or for invited guests only. I can always try to register later. Ellowyne's tea this year is for a Lizette, not Ellowyne. :|

I've been to Orlando before but i've never visited Seaworld. I'm planning to spend at least 6 hours there. Is there going to be an organized BJD meet? I am only planning to bringing 1 resin doll (either SD13 or SD16 boy, since I don't have resin girls). I am worried about security and carrying a resin doll to SeaWorld. I might bring Delilah Noir, my poor Ashton Drake girl (my only msd girl) has no clothes to wear for the event, she has no friends either! I've neglected her. Embarrassing.

    26. Sea world is pretty calm for a theme park i think. ^^ shouldn't be a problem to bring a doll and have them be safe

    27. I too am wondering which Dinner is the BJD one too. Would love to attend.

I am having to keep my 'buy' fingers in my lap so I can save $$ to spend at IDEX. NOT easy.

    28. The BJD dinner is the Saturday night one, there usually is a costume contest associated with it and lots of raffles.

    29. Yes, the BJD dinner is Saturday night 6 to 9. Both dinners are open to everyone. The Diamond Awards dinner is $85. and the Saturday dinner is $75. You can register by going to the IDEX page and clicking Register... it seems just like you're registering all over again, but even if you've already registered you just check which event you want. The site will then update your registration.

The Saturday dinner is sponsored by Angelic Dreamz and the theme is Saturday Night Fever. Disco...

Definitely bring your dolls!!!! Show everyone there how BJD people play with and show off their dolls, lol!

DoA people, on your way to and from the Volks booth, please stop by and see me (DollStories) at booth 604 and say Hi! In addition to dolls I will have lots of clothes. I'm doing all Mori style for the event.

This event has traditionally been under the radar for Asian BJDs... having Volks there will change that!

The event is for dealers and the general public. You can definitely shop til you drop.

The April issue of Dolls magazine will have all the Debut of Dolls winners, and those dolls are represented at the Friday dinner, along with the Diamond Awards winners.

    30. I'm still not sure if I will buy tickets to any of the other events besides the general admission. I've known about IDEX for a few years, but never went before, as it didn't seem to have enough to draw my attention. :sweat But while I've decided to attend because of Volks being there, I do look forward to seeing all that is on offer!

I'll probably bring one or two dolls with me, and I wonder if we can have an informal bjd get-together at the hotel, or out in the city someplace. I've been to Orlando plenty of times (and in fact just spent the last 4 days there for work reasons) but I don't know the best meetup locations like some of the locals might.

    31. I too am going for the first time! I'm looking forward to meeting new people, seeing a variety of new dolls and having fun! Hope to see you there!

    32. Registered for the Saturday night dinner. Sounds like fun!

Will definitely stop and see you divi.

    33. I just booked my hotel! I'm actually being a cheapskate and staying at a nearby place that's nearly 1/4 the price of the Doubletree...they're all super close to each other anyways, as that area is crammed with hotels because of Universal. Now I'll just have more money to spend at the show (and at World of Beer, and Cafe Tu Tu Tango, and Cheesecake Factory, etc. etc.!)

That does lead me to my next question though: do most of the exhibitors take credit cards? Or would it be wise to bring cash along as well? I rarely have cash on me, so if I think I'll be likely to need it, I'll have to stop at an ATM.

    34. A lot of the vendors will take credit cards at IDEX, but you always run into some that don't. (I'd bring a checkbook just in case... and there's usually an ATM in the hotels.)

The BJD Mixer/Meetup is the event dinner on Saturday evening (which I was referring to). There's food, speakers, a raffle (with whole dolls in the prize pool), a human costume theme, a BJD costume contest (I think there's 3 categories this year), and goodie bags.

There will be PLENTY of BJD vendors at IDEX, also traditional doll companies, and teddy bears (and those reborn collector people).

Definitely bring your dolls... we all always do. However, when entering the exhibition room they will make you put a sticker (or tag) on your dolls so that people know they were brought in from outside.

IDEX ends early each evening... so what we've done in the past is planned a meetup afterwards on friday evening at a local place (jhonny rockets, etc). If anyone has any suggestions please post them!! Also, some of us usually meet at a local iHop after IDEX closes on sunday right before everyone heads out of town.

    35. omg volks.... they are gonna have one offs and limited items D; oh maaaaan.....

    36. And don't forget the Dolly Doctor will be there too! We must simply accept it...our wallets and bank account balances are DOOMED! Dooooommmed I say!!! Not to mention the heavy luggage fee I'll be facing if I want to bring any of my big Volks with me, or...gasp!...end up adopting a One-Off!

Juli---who reeally would love to find a roomie now! ;)

    37. Yeah, that's why I have a bunch of my dolls up for sale in the marketplace. (Saving for Volks... poor wallet.)

I never did make it to an official dollpa before they stopped them, so i'm REALLY excited to see them at IDEX.

I hope if they do well this year, that they will make it an annual thing... and perhaps do events/classes/etc next year!!!!!

As for hotels... I haven't booked one yet (really need to get on that, i know). I'm prolly either going to stay in an extended stay or the "official" hotel (extended stay is most likely). In the past we've stayed at a time share, but then they moved IDEX from Jan to April and that won't work now (spring break, so everything's booked).

    38. I'm not staying at a hotel since its only a 20-30 min drive.
I think im only going friday and saturday. (unless i get there and find out something super awesome is happening on sunday)
      but i cant go thursday because of school ><;

and ugh i kinda wish this was happening before the home town osaka 7 event..

    39. Finally got my registration in. I don't know why I waited. I'll be there Saturday.

      VOLKS. :fangirl:

Now I need to figure out which girl(s) I'm going to bring with me. SO EXCITED.

    40. I am so excited, I am good to go! I will be bringing one msd volks (the only one I have lol!) with me. I am so excited to see Volks <3

    41. Is anyone from San Diego going to IDEX?

    42. Yay! Looking forward to seeing you!

Please mention you're a DoA member to receive 10% off at my booth (604), dolls and clothes.

Also, I'm donating a head for 60cm girls as a door prize at the Saturday dinner.

    43. I'm glad to find you in this thread, guys. I'll attend too with some DOA members (Rafael and more). So, as I understood the discussion, in this year public access will start from Thursday instead of previous years when the public admission was only Saturday-Sunday? Does it mean that after the general registration I can come since Thursday?

    44. I too plan on attending and had written to ask when the collectors can enter. The response was that we (the collectors that is) can enter on Friday, Saturday and Sunday however at what time we can enter was not specified so will write again to clarify that. From the schedule there are workshops all day on Thursday but the trade floor is only open for exhibitor set up.

    45. Correct, Thursday is closed to the public and is just for setup. The show hours Fri. - Sun. are as follows for the public:

      Friday, April 12
      8 am - 5 pm, Registration
9 am - 5 pm, Trade floor open
      Workshops all day

      Saturday, April 13
      8 am - 5 pm, Registration
      9 am - 5 pm, Trade flooropen
      Workshops all day

      Sunday, April 14
      8 am - 2 pm, Registration
10 am - 2 pm, Trade floor open
      Workshops until noon
      2 pm, Show closes

    46. So I'm really debating all the fine details of what I want when I go, but I for sure plan on being there that Saturday. The more I think about the dinner, the more tempting it sounds.
I am just curious if anyone plans to have a more informal meet on hopefully Saturday, before the dinner, maybe have a gathering throughout the day.

I'm also wondering if it might be poor judgment of me to bring a doll from a company that won't be there. I really want to bring a couple of my bjds, but I don't have any volks dolls for instance. I'd be more persuaded to bring some of mine if there was a meetup and others would also bring their dolls of other companies as well.

      ---

Instead of making a 2nd post in a row, I figured I'd just edit...

I was thinking, since at least I plan on going Saturday, and it's looking much more likely that I'll be going to the Saturday night dinner, and that doesn't start until 6pm, and the show closes at 2pm, maybe that'd be the perfect time to start a meet, possibly nearby or even in the hotel itself. Or since it's right there next to Universal, maybe we could all meet up at City Walk and just hang out and take dolly photos and the regular meet-up stuff? What do you all think?

    47. I am all for a meetup between the close of Saturday and the Dinner that nite, or any time for that matter. I am really excited to meet some of my DOA 'family'.

I don't think that it would be inappropriate to bring any doll you want with you to Idex. I don't have any Volks either and will be bringing two of my girls from other companies. (Havent't picked which two yet, but definitely one Dollstown girl).

    48. Awesome ^_^ Glad to know I am not the only one interested in meeting up between the events, and that I'm not alone in not having a Volks to bring. I definitely feel much better ^_^

I am thinking maybe meeting up at the giant Universal Globe at Citywalk between 2 - 6 so we all have something to do (ie. hang out & take doll photos). Unless of course it might be a better idea to stay closer the hotel? I'm just thinking the open space and giant globe could give us better photo ops, especially since it's only a couple minutes away. Plus it's not very deep into citywalk and it's right next to the Universal store if some of us aren't shopped out by then haha

    49. Something is off here... The show closes at 5pm on saturday and the dinner starts at 6pm. So that's only an hour (in which I usually go freshen up, and get ready for the dinner).

I would like to see a DoA meetup friday night... we usually all have to do SOMETHING for dinner anyway, since the show closes at 5pm and there's no scheduled dinner that night. Meeting friday after the show closes (say 6pm) at the globe in citywalk sounds like a good idea.

The show closes at 2pm on SUNDAY... perhaps that's where you are getting confused?!? As I said... we usually all try to meet at the local iHop on sunday after the show closes (again it closes at 2pm on sunday), and before everyone heads out of town.

EDIT: Also... this is the first year Volks will be at IDEX, and we've always brought our BJD's... so feel free to bring any dolls you like (doesn't have to be volks, or any other brand exhibiting at the show).

    50. Ah! Thank you DiSpy for pointing the time out; I was looking at the Sunday hours! Yikes!

So now that that's cleared, I am curious, but where is the Dinner going to be held?

And is there going to be an ongoing meetup throughout the event so that we could meet up and say hey to each other? Maybe we could all touch bases from time to time or something?

    51. Hello all! I am planning on attending Friday and Saturday, most likely going to the dinner as well. :) I am all for a meetup on either day. I am planning on bringing my Volks dolls (my 3 SD-13's most likely) but I may bring more also, since I'll have a hotel room for Friday night... <3 But yes. I shall be in attendance and I shall attend all dolly events! :D

    52. HI DI! <3 lol
Zetoast, the dinner well be held at the same location as the dolls just a different room^^ and from the few times I've been to IDEX (though this is a new spot so it could be different) you'll bump into everyone a lot XD I think everyone will be hitting up the same booths <3. OOOH I am so excited to see everyone's dollies! theresa226 I don't think I have seen a sollstown in person, excited to one! OOh Syndal_Lynn I want to see your sd's, but won't they be heavy?

    53. Thanks for the Exhibition schedule.
I will take part in Saturday dinner too. Does somebody planning to redress in disco style and take part in the contest? I'm just trying configure what to do with myself in disco style and how to prepare one of my doll?

    54. 916mvk It's also likely that I attend the Saturday night party. I grew up with disco, my old clothes are in my mom's place in Canada. Even if I have them here, I can no longer fit into the mini dresses and hot pants!.......*_*. Sad that now, I can only fit into 1 of the less pretty dresses. Fortunately, i have that dress with me, so I'd be wearing that.

I'm bringing a mask so that people don't see my age! :sweat

Updates.....I just tried the 70s party dress i mentioned earlier and it won't fit! :...( I last wore it 5 years ago and it was alright but now, it won't fit. I will have to pick one of the casual 80s non party dress. Sigh. It's embarrassing to wear a mini short dress at this age anyway. I'd be wearing a simple 80s casual dress, the type I won't wear to the disco. :doh

    55. I'm not dressing for the 70's theme... but I am going to enter some dolls in the contest.

FYI Guys... the saturday night dinner usually sells out before the show starts, so I would get your tickets now.

      (Hi Ballet!! <3 <3)

    56. I will be there all weekend and attending the dinner Saturday night. Cant wait!

    57. I've really been deliberating on the Saturday dinner, but I think I'm gonna give it a pass. It just seems like it costs too much for the return for me, and I'll probably end up going out into Orlando somewhere instead. I do hope there will be a meetup, or at least some little gatherings at other times during the weekend though, as I'd like to see and meet more DoA members at the event. :) I'll be carrying around probably only one doll at a time, though I might bring a few different ones with me, and change them up.

I can't believe it's so close already! I've got my hotel, but still need to rent a car for the drive north. I do hope Volks posts some previews of what they'll have at the event on their blog. I'm really looking foward to seeing the oneoffs, especially!

    58. A lot of us are thinking about oneoff ;)? And Volks said that they will offer some limited dolls too.

    59. I am flying all the way to Florida, I hope to visit SeaWorld as I missed doing that the last time I was there. My purpose of attending IDEX is to look at different types of dolls from around the world, not just BJDs. I look forward to meeting members from the DoA, I hope there's a doll meet on Friday night :aheartbea. 2 of my big resin boys need to see the Volks doll doctor. I have not yet signed up for Saturday night event. I don't plan on bringing any doll to that event. I only plan to enjoy myself and admire the pretty dolls that will be there.

Like many of you, I'm curious to see the Volks one offs. Does anybody know how the lottery system works in such events? Do winners collect the dolls and bring them home after they announce the winner or do they ship the dolls to winners. Will the lottery be open to online buyers? I booked my flight back on early Sunday morning. I always have bad luck with Volks lotteries.
