I never thought I'd get you

Jul 9, 2010

    1. Do you have a doll you hated or disliked before and then one day you got it on a whim or maybe one day you randomly started to like that doll and bought it. Well I want to see your dolls that you never thought you'd buy.

I have one. I was never a fan of dollshe sculpts...in the face the older bodies I thought were alright but not amazing...then dollshe released his new DSAM35 body and I despised it! I thought it looked very unreal...who has abs like that!? lol I took a break from the hobby for a few months didn't look at any dolls or anything and recently got back into them. I bought a SOOM mecha angel...then on a whim I bought a dollshe Bernard...with the DSAM35 body. He has since become my favorite doll...I LOVE the body! He poses so well and he looks so natural posing and he has such a soft face...when the light hits him he looks so pretty.

    2. Yes! When I first saw DZ Cosmo...I thought (to myself because some friend wanted him) Ewwww he is ugly. Then I saw a few owner pics and the more I saw of him I started to like him a little and now I really, really want him! I'll post when I get him..lol.

    3. I never thought much about Catsy. Crazy tiny cat doll that is no longer made ... not really something I am looking to get. But then she started to grow on me like fuzz on food in the back of the fridge. So, when she was re-release, I had to snag her up. Then I got a black Catsy... and am tempted to get another one and dye her grey so my twins can be triplets.

She is so spunky... hard to imagine she was ever in the "not for me" category. :)

    4. I have no pictures, but My friend told me one day that she wanted to get a BJD (After much persuasion on my part XD) So we looked for dolls that suited her, and her personality. She had narrowed it down to about 3 dolls and I wasn't interested in a single one. But it was for her, so It didn't matter what i thought, as long as she loved him.

She eventually settled for a Doll-Zone Mo, (Normal skin) But never took him home. He was delivered to my house, she had her box opening there, and she left him there.... So after 6 months I asked her if she ever intended to take him home, because by that point he had started to grow on me. She offered for me to keep him if I had gotten that attatched. She ended up not being as much a doll person as she thought.
When she first ordered him I didn't think he was that great. But when we opened up his box for the first time he was instant friends with not only my dolls, but my friend Clare's dolls too! Now he's an important adopted member of my doll family. <3

    6. I did not think Volks Amakusa was all that. I thought his face looks rather odd......

Then at DPNY 2010, I was blown away with the Amakusa One Off - he was gorgeous especially in blonde wig. I think Volks went wrong with trying to make him into a traditional Japanese LOL LOL

I got one of my own since June

    7. I never ever thought I'd get an anthro doll. I thought it was something I'd never like or that would never fit into my doll family but then Dollzone did this...

All of my no anthros thoughts changed once I saw him. Of course someone had to go make the one animal I couldn't refuse once I'd decided anthos weren't for me. Damn Dollzone Ulli and his crazy goat-y ways!

    8. I'm not really a fan of sleepy heads (extra face plates are okay though), but I've found myself in the midst of buying a sleepy eyed Pado girl secondhand (although admittedly she's the kind of 'sleepy' where her eyes are still open a little) ... I just fell in love with her instantly, she looks so much cuter than in the official pics xD

    9. I've knew about zaolls even before buying my first doll (5 years ago?) and at first glance their semi-realistic face quite of displeased me.
April this year i finally settled on a zaoll as the mold that would incarnate a character of mine... now i couldn't think any other mold doing the same job so spot on :D

My AngelRegion Cien is not a doll I ever thought I'd get. she just showed up at my local doll shop one day. Once I put her on a mature body I just feel in love. My Mom still doesn't like her.

Another doll I never thought I'd get is my Elfdoll Tasha. I got her from the same doll shop as my Cien. She had been in and out of the shop a few times but I never really cared for her, but she showed up again late last year and just had to come home with me.

    11. Great thread idea!

I haven't said no to much in this hobby, as far as molds or sizes or whatever, but I do have certain standards I set when looking for a doll I want.

First doll I was really suprised I wanted to get was my Bluefairy Shiny Fairy Hana, named Cassidy. I tend to like well defined noses and pouty lips. She has a more simplified face, and almost closer to what I'd catagorized in my mind as the 'anime look'. Small pointy nose, small mouth, big eyes. Not the type I usually go for. But omg, when I saw her sale thread go up on my local doll forum...I could not stop looking at her. Couple weeks later she was mine. Now she is such a big part of my family I can't imagine being without her. :aheartbea
      [IMG]
I also find myself looking at other dolls like her. I never looked twice before..but she has opened my eyes to how cute and sweet they are. <3

Second..and this one is more humorous I think. Soom teenie-taurs. (and I can't stop calling them that now. It's so cute.) When I first saw them, I was a little repulsed. I hated their proportions, and it looked like they were pregnant! I didn't like how they posed their legs. It looked stiff and unnatural. I...don't know when I changed my mind about them. But suddenly I HAD to have one! Their proportions no longer bothered me, as I was convinced it was just the angle of the photos. Their fat bellies...became my favorite thing about them. Dat tummy~:whee: And their legs can pose nicely. Who knew. :P Anyway, I'm glad I waited to snag one, as Aloa is hands down my favorite of all the taurs so far. x3

    12. CP Delf Lishe. I HATED her. Something about her nose I think.

Then I got my Soony just before they stopped making the Delf's. And all of a sudden, I HAD to have a Lishe. The thought that I missed her was horrid. So now I have one on layaway with a wonderful person here on DOA <3

    13. Pistachio - I know how you feel! I never thought I'd own an anthro doll of that kind either. Then I got one as a random christmas gift from Junkyspot for being a good customer. I wasn't sure about him, but then I decided to mod him into something I really would love.

      This is what I got:

    14. Yes! SID Storm, I wanted a SID guy for his body, I didn't really think the other boys had very masculinge faces so Storm was the only option but I thought he's A face up was ghostly and his B was too bird like and the Tokyo special was too pretty. One way to fix that... Go over it with my own. :)
I really can't imagine having any other guy now. :)

    15. It's funny, when I got into this hobby, in 2006, CP/Luts' El was wildly popular. He was everywhere on the forum and it seemed like everyone had him. I guess I was just sort of sick of him, and couldn't really understand why everyone was so in love with El. I swore I would never own one. (heh, famous last words, right?)

Well, several years later, I finally got an El. Styles in sculpting had started to change by then, and El was no longer as prominently displayed as he once was. I think time and distance gave me a chance to really see El, not just as "that popular boy" but for the lovely sculpt he really is. When he wasn't around all the time, I suddenly had to have him. Now, I think he's gorgeous, and I wonder what I wasn't seeing before? There is something iconic and classical about the sculpt that just steals my heart away every time I look at him.

    16. When I first got into Puki's, I said I'd NEVER want a Mary as they were pouty, ugly lil things. Then a friend got one and made her a he, we then decided that we would have twin boys, as her DZ Mo and my AOD Fei were already a couple and they could have children. So now I have a boy Mary and love him to pieces!

    17. When I started looking at unoas I always brushed off b-el's. I thought they were ugly, too masculine, and the L-bi's charm captured me over him each time.
Then last spring I posted up a trade with my two dolls at the time for a L-bi, I thought it was a long shot to get any offers but one came through... only for a B-el

I thought about it for awhile, asked for pictures, and debated with myself for a long time. The owner (FairEmma, such a sweetheart!!) said that she'd send him out, and if I didn't like him I could just send him back. With that amazing offer I couldn't turn it down.

In the end I've ended up loving him a lot more than I ever expected to! It'll take a lot to make me part with him (:

    18. Volks Heath. I'm not a huge fan of Volks, and I know I'd seen Heath before but he was not even close to being on my radar...but last summer when I decided to shell one of the last of my characters into doll form I did a search for a Soom Spinel and somehow ended up looking at pictures of Heath. He was exactly what I wanted. The shape of his face and the soft smile were perfect, just what I was looking for! It took me months to get him together, but he turned out just as I wanted him too :)

    19. There's actually been a few...

Firstly, I told myself when I first got into this hobby...ONLY SD SIZED BOYS... well... I ended up falling in love with the Bobobie Ariel sprite version. I don't really like Bobobie or Resinsoul, but there was something about those droopy ears and pouty face that was just... O___O I still wasn't going to get her, and then a week or so later I ended up having a surprise birthday gift in the mail. >_<

And then my MSD collection grew. >_<

      And THEN....

Volks. I can't stand a lot of Volks molds (no offense to anyone). They don't really have any boys that I like, and their girls tend to be relatively anime-like or too cute or have strange features (in my opinion). But one day while purusing the marketplace I stumbled on a Kun boy that was just adorable. I realized that this particular sculpt has the features that I would like for my original character, and that I must get him/her somehow.

When I got to Japan, I accidentally ended up doing the full choice system the first weekend here, and I suddenly had a white skin F-22 on the way. O_o

I absolutely love her, and she is sooo photogenic! O_o I'm in love. XD

Another one of my dislikes is a doll that has eyes that are much too narrow. >_> But..well....

We see how THAT turned out. :P

    20. I never really cared for Iplehouse Akando. He just seemed too wide eyed and innocent even when he wasn't done up that way. I pretty much liked every other EID more than him. And then I got an incredibly good deal on one on the secondhand market and bought him on a whim. I originally had planned to replace his head but when he arrived I realized that just wasn't going to happen.

Now he's one of my favorite dolls.

      I once said I disliked half-open/closed eyes.
I once said I'd never buy a fur wig....

      Then I got a K-Doll Kael who claimed a dark-brown mohair wig x'D

    22. There are a fair few Volks sculpts that I love... Amakusa, Ryoya, Kamimura, Eden, Cristal... but I just never saw the appeal of the School A. Everyone else seemed to love them, but to me? They looked like constipated frogs.

      And then Yomi came along...

    23. Well i bought a doll, that i had seen on the marketplace every time i went doll hunting. I was TRYING to find a YOSD size so i could sew for a friend, and hers were adorable.. instead i kept coming back to this doll. Well she lingered and lingered, no one wanted her, so i contacted the seller, brought her home... and she is my hands down favorite now!
she's a Chubby Cherish, 8 inch.... to small to use to sew clothes for yosd.. but her wardrobe is MASSIVE.. i spoil her rotten....She's the one who goes everywhere with me....
I am, so glad i took the chance on her. Originally i thought her a tom boy, but she is really a.. eccentric girl. It was an interesting lesson, as a newcomer to the hobby.

But then I saw her head sitting there half bubble rapped in the corner of the local doll shop, with a big chip off of her neck hole. I knew I could fix her and just had to get her. I thought they couldn't pose easily or steadily when they were 1/12 and that sewing for them would be a nightmare and faceups would be impossible and augh!!....and then I got Pandora. XD

I did her faceup and made her outfit and her wig, and I love her adorable little face. She's also second in posing skill to my loongsoul boy body alone. She's a little bitty posing machine! and now I've ordered a 1/6th too. XD

    30. That picture of the Bobobie Ming on BBB's site was easily one of the worst picture I'd ever seen of a doll. The long hair, the over sized nose, everything just screamed a huge no. And then, Junkyspot posted their own pictures of Ming. Those pictures alone changed my entire outlook on that doll. Everything about it was absolutely perfect, I knew from that point on that I just had to have him.
With some begging (okay a little more then some), and a little bit of time, he was mine, my first and still favorite doll.

    34. Granado Sidonia. When she came out, she did nothing whatsoever for me; I didn't look at her twice. Then one day there was this strange click: suddenly, she simply was Florie. Funny enough, when she arrived blank I thought I had made a mistake and I didn't like her at all. Then I gave her a face-up. Now I can't imagine any other sculpt as Florie and she's one of my absolute favourites.

La Légende de Temps Edria. Well, "never thought" isn't entirely right in this case. At one point I actually made up my mind to get her, but then decided against buying her when she was actually released XD. I originally wanted a Soom Dia to be my Kundry and felt that Edria was my second choice, too sweet and innocent-looking to work, plus she didn't have Dia's (extremely) full lips. Edria even moved to third choice when I came across Iplehouse Bibiane. One day I was sick of my own shilly-shallying and ordered Edria anyway. While I was waiting for her to come home, Iplehouse came out with Stella and I thought I should really have got a Stella. When Edria finally arrived, I thought, "Ach, what a very lovely sculpt - but a Kundry? Dunno..." I kept putting off giving her a face-up because I dreaded that she might not work. Then I got her a body, finally gave her a face-up, and ended up completely smitten. She truly is Kundry :).

    38. Only boys in this house for 8 years. I had no interest in girls until I saw a one-off School C in 2007, but I still thought I didn't want any other girl than her, and she was "the one that got away." A couple months ago I put a feeler in the MP, thinking that I might be able to remember enough of the face to have it painted like that, or maybe find a picture somewhere. Then an amazing girl popped up and I bought her on a whim. I felt terrible about it right up until the moment she arrived, but she won me over instantly.

I also find myself looking at tinies quite a lot lately, though I've always thought they were too small.

    41. I only own one doll, and she's open-eyed and everything, but I used to not like closed-eyed dolls at all. Part of the appeal of BJDs for me were the eyes and the fact that they'd be closed kind of took away from some of the beauty for me. But, upon musing over a couple Volks sculpts, I saw a few of their SwD girls and just thought they were so pretty. Plus you can still see their eyes, they just look really sleepy! So yeah, I can easily see myself ending up with a SwD girl if I come across one for sale at the right place and the right time.

    44. MSDs. Before I got my SDC Sora, I was never going to get an MSD. Then, when I did get her, I decided I would only ever have the one. But then, on my recent trip to the Volks Sumika in Harajuku, I came across this little one...and she ended up coming home with me.

    45. I just bought a kid's doll that technically is ball jointed but that would be off topic for posting a pic here just because. She's not my usual kind of doll at all and she was really an out of character purchase for me but I had to have her. She was so totally unique and adorable that she totally got me. So yeah....

    46. Yes! I currently have a Resinsoul Dong head on Bobobie 60cm boy body on order. I've had BBB dolls in the past, and never did like them, swore I'd never "waste" my money on another one. Then I saw the Dong head, and in dark tan skin, he's perfect for my character. No other resin matches dark tan BBB (as far as I know), the 70cm RS body was too big, and I had even more issues with the 60cm RS body than with BBB. So.....I ordered him, he should be shipped any day now! I am much much more knowledgable about restringing, sueding and wiring now than when I last had a BBB, so I'm really hoping I'll be able to handle him better now. :)

    47. I passed up buying Volks SD17 Genji at the time of his release-- I didn't dislike him, I thought he was quite beautiful, I just wasn't in love. My goals were elsewhere at the time. (And, as he was a Japan-only event doll & extremely hard to chase down, I didn't feel like chasing him down. I only jump through hoops for true love. ^^)

But, after I got my EID Luo Strongman, I realized I needed to bring home his long-lost lover too, so I started looking around for tall strong-yet-flowerlike male dolls... had to be a certain type of pretty yet still imposing, and had to be tall enough not to look like a toy next to an EID. I almost decided on Souldoll Chiron, but he has an unfortunately short torso, so he looked ridiculously short sitting next to Radu. Chiron would've been nice, he was basic-stock, no chasing limiteds or jumping through Volks hoops, reasonable price. But then I saw a Genji repaint, and I realized that this was the steel-magnolia man I was looking for. I said to my Luo, "Dammit, Radu, must you have such expensive tastes?? What's wrong with a nice basic-stock boyfriend?" No, it had to be Genji. But soon after my decision, I saw two or three Genjis mysteriously hit the Marketplace at the same time, so I snapped up the magical SDink repaint at an amazing price. When the Dolly Fates definitely want a certain doll to come live at your house, they really make things move!

Anyway, here's Shinji. <3 He knew he was coming here, even if I didn't.

    48. When I ordered my first two Miro bodies I fully intended putting these other model type heads on them, and I still plan on getting those heads actually just because I really, really like them and eventually do want to have them. But it turns out they might not be on topic here and I don't want my first pair not to be so last night I just decided that I was going to order a couple of cheaper heads that I wasn't quite as into to practice with and so that I will have something I can stand on those bodies. I might just put those model heads on bodies with nicer hands (and less huge and silicone looking tatas) actually even if that means going to vinyl or something.

I think I will like the Miro bodies with the more typical BJD heads I've just gotten from Fantasy Doll. I think I might want something a bit more graceful for the other pair though. I'm not sure yet. When they get here I'll have to just try them on the Miro bodies too and see how they look. Who knows I might like them after all and the first pair of heads might end up on more Miro bodies the next time they have a sale but until then I'm getting these, the human versions thereof anyhow:

      Fantasy Doll Dane

      Fantasy Doll Mathan

I can't say I am nearly as crazy about these as I am about the Dollmore heads but they'll do I think for first project heads. They're on topic, at least I think they are, lol, and they're not so expensive that they'd be a waste just to have for fun anyway. At this point I've pretty much come to terms with the fact that the first set of Miro bodies may eventually be followed by more. A month on DOA and the original idea I had of having one perfect and affordable pair has definitely gone by the wayside.

I've gone back and forth between this set of heads, and the Dollmore pair and I just know eventually I'm going to end up with all 4 of them, and probably at least one normal or white skinned SD sized pair too. Likely a green RS SD girl too because I just cannot get the one green Dai doll I envisioned out of my mind and her snake eyes are just calling to me. But these Fantasy heads, they are really growing on me the more I see face ups for them and I think I can live with them for my Miro bodies, at least for now.

    49. When YoSDs came out, I thought they were the freakiest little bug-eyed things I'd ever seen. Why would anyone want to take home something so stupid-looking? But when I started seeing her more around the forums, Suzuna and her droopy eyes started to seem like the epitome of cuteness. It was probably about a year after her release that I realized I wanted one of my own. I kept wishing for a rerelease, and I got what I wished for -- at a time when I had absolutely no money. Finally, after years of pining for a Suzuna, my very own arrived in brand-new condition just this year. It only took me, what, a year to come around? And then seven years more to wait for the chance to snap one up. But I know that she will never, ever leave me.
