Shopping Hyper Realistic Faceup Artists

Mar 5, 2022

    1. Short: Hyper realistic faceup artists based in the USA.

I'm really, really particular in what I like and thus 16 of my dolls have all been done by the same artist (Red Iris Atelier/AngstyPegnuin--Red Iris Atelier). Unfortunately, she's closed down commissions for a good 2+ years now for personal reasons and while I keep waiting for her to come back and have so many blank dolls I've saved just for her...I don't think she's coming back and I'm going to have to move on as much as it breaks my heart. So, I'm looking for who are your favorite US and Canada based artists to work with who offer hyper realistic faceups? (You can reference Mindy's portfolio linked before for an example of what I mean.)

And, yes, I have already looked through the marketplace here so I know users who offer commission through the MP. I'm just not terribly involved in other areas of the internet so it's hard for me to find services elsewhere.

      I appreciate anyone's suggestions!

The reason I specify US and Canada is because shipping FROM the US is extremely expensive. It's way cheaper to ship to the US than to ship from the US to out of the US and I just don't think it would be cost effective with how many dolls I have. I'm open to suggestions for people outside of North America but really I'd like to keep it local.

    2. I really love Komorebi.dolls work! I do all my own faceups but there's a doll or two in my collection that I'm heavily considering commissioning her to paint. Here's her Instagram: Login • Instagram

    3. Beautiful suggestion! Her work is wonderful and I'll absolutely keep this in mind <3

    4. I have no suggestions but am also looking for someone in US (previously sent 1 head out of country and had extreme anxiety for 4 month return wait time) wish artists would put location in the beginning of their description and/or in their thread title

    5. I was coming here to suggest Komorebi dolls! I follow her on Instagram and her work is just gorgeous.

I searched around Instagram a bit more to see if I could find some options for you, and came up with these. I'm not sure if their work is hyper-realistic enough (some of it looks like it might be) but they seem very talented, and I wanted to at least offer some other suggestions so you would have options.

Many of my favorite faceup artists are international, but, like you, the shipping deters me from commissioning them, plus the fear of losing the heads.

    6. Emperorofbread is based in California. I'm not sure how often she opens commissions but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

    7. You could have a look at Jaye Searle's facups - she does great natural/realistic faceups Jay's Petite Salon

    8. Highly reccommend, was great to commission work from <3

    9. Also recommending komorebi! I have sent two heads to her thus far, and two additional ones are with her now. Her mastery of undertones in skin painting is absolutely breathtaking.

    10. Ty for everyone's suggestions. Komorebi seems very hard to get on the schedule for. She opened commissions 6 days early according to what I saw. I sent in a request but I noticed she's already closed down the form less than 12 hours later so she seems VERY difficult to get on the schedule for. I'll keep an eye out though.
I've followed Emporerofbread for a while on IG but haven't ever caught an opening there either.

By all means, suggestions are still welcome!

    11. @akaisha0 - Komorebi was having problem with the website saying the commissions list was closed when it was not - maybe that was the case for you? I haven't tried commissioning her yet (I would like to) but I read several messages about it addressed to other people on her Instagram posts.

    12. @StellaMarigold When I first went to her website it said comms would open in 6 days (this was 2 days ag). I waited. Her IG said it was closed still too. Then as of yesterday she made a post on IG saying it was open (ahead of schedule I guess) and changed her profile header saying it was open and the website at that point reflected it was open. I sent in a request but haven't heard back. Less than 12 hours later her IG and website both said it was closed again. So I'm fairly sure she opened her slots early, got more than expected, and had to close it again. But again that shows the massive demand for her work. We'll see if I actually got on the list or not but I'm not terribly interested in playing this "refresh the page every day" game to try to get in on a time period that's only open for 12 hours repeatedly when I have a good 10 dolls that still need work. She looks great and clearly her work speaks for itself hence her popularity! I'm very happy for her and certainly hope I get the chance to work with her but definitely trying to keep my options open as this reservation process is a bit rough.

    13. Hmm...I see what you mean! I would be a little frustrated if I was waiting for a particular date and then it changed without warning, and the refreshing race can be so stressful. I hope that you'll be able to find other artists whose work you love!

Edited to add: I asked Komorebi about the website dates (since I hope to commission her in the future and would like to know the real dates) and she said it was a website update error. She also said that all submitted forms are being considered, so if you were also to submit a request yours should be included @akaisha0 - at least I hope so!

    14. I found another US-based faceup artist who seems to do pretty realistic work!

    15. Have you tried doing it by yourself? It’s really not that difficult if you only want a natural look. I was intimidated when I got my first doll last summer. But then I started doing mine and…I’m not where I want to be yet but it’s been way easier than I thought. Only needed to buy a very fine brush for hair tho, you do get used to it. You can just remove face up with W&N brush cleanser and send to professional if you don’t like your result anytime. :)
