Hybrid Pullip/Blythe: Yes or No? Best Options For Hybrids? Creative Hybrid ideas?

Apr 7, 2022

?
You may select up to 3 choices.
    1. So...I've kind of kept my Pullip & co. in storage (with a few exceptions). I decided to take a few of them out of hiding about a week or two ago, and noticed that one of them was in desperate need of a new body. In the process of searching for one (luckily I managed to find an Obitsu at a reasonable price that works for them), it got me thinking about a few of the unpainted blank Pullips I have from those DIY kits and the need to find them body upgrades (I despise the type 4 they come with by default—limited movement in the chest joint, stiff/squeaky joints, and the arm/leg joints are even more fragile than the type 3; if I had to pick a favorite of the four, type 2 would rank highest, with type 4 being the lowest). It's decently easy to find options for my dark/tan (?) one, but I'm having a heck of a time finding a replacement for my gothic pale one. The closest ones I ever could find still have too much of a pinkish tint.

I know there are others on here that collect Pullip/Blythe, so I had to wonder: do you get them a hybrid body, or keep them on the original? If going the hybrid route is your preferred choice: what are some good options out there? Bonus points for goth pale options:kitty2 (honestly—as long as it's got hinge joints with decent articulation, I'm game:thumbup) Also, have you ever come up with creative/unusual hybrid ideas besides the usual Obitsu bodies?

Also, does anyone else find the type 4 body as frustrating as I do?:XD:

    2. Pure Neemo bodies might be what you're looking for. Blythe uses a Medium size and Byul/Dal/Yeolume uses Small (I think).

    3. All of my Blythe are on Azone Pure Neemo bodies, with various adapters bought from Etsy/Taobao. The fake Blythe even nowadays come with fake Azone bodies too :sweat

The good thing is: higher range of motion, and they can have different heights depending on which body you choose. Also a ton of hand options (especially with the Type C hands, they got extra movement range as well).
Bad: without an adapter, the head will not hold well. The original Pure Neemo neck piece is not made to hold that much weight.
They cannot really stand on their own (too top heavy)...but TBH, not as if they can do that with their original bodies.
Skintone options are not that big, and there are no translucent bodies (I have several translucent Blythe releases).

I think for Pullip, the Obitsu bodies are still the most popular option.

    4. I do like poseability in my dolls but when it comes to my pullips and blythes I've only ever re-bodied one, a custom blythe who is on her third and final body. Yeah none of them could stand on their own but with the exception of a few of my bjds and RHs none of my dolls can and I'm fine with that.
In the end I suppose everyone has different things they're looking for from their dolls, and though I enjoy customizing a lot most of my dolls remain stock other than changes of clothing every now and then.

    5. My Blythe head is on a Takara/Licca body with click knees for scientific reasons. She tried a few of the others I have including an Obistu, looked quite good on a Moxie Teenz think 18" tall skinny Bratz with glass eyes, and pondered an Obitsu 60.

My only Pullip experience is a second hand Teyang body with very loose joints but as he's Thomas from Daft Punk he'll usually be in a body suit to help keep him together. So I totally get wanting just the right body type.

    6. My only Pullip doll is an Onmyoji TaeYang... He just hangs out on the shelf with a couple of Little Apples, so I've never really thought about how his posing stacks up to the other dolls in my crew. 'Might be fun to find him a better bod, but it's not something I've ever looked into.

    7. I personally really hate Pullips on soft body Obitsus because of the floppiness of the body. Yes, I know that you can fix this somewhat by adding craft foam into the body cavity and by modifying the internal skeleton somewhat but it never felt like a permanent solution. Furthermore, if you use an Obitsu body, you're more or less accepting that a Type 3 or Type 4 Pullip's clothing won't fit (Type 2 won't fit either, depending on the bust size and clothing specifics--I don't own a Type 1 to know). I don't like Pureneemo bodies because the knees and arms will not bend beyond 90 degrees.

Hard body Obitsus aren’t available anymore as are my favorite body for posability (which had more skin tone options and had the benefit of being less orange): the Volks neo EB Teens Dollfie body (not 1/3rd scale Dollfie Dream but 1/6th scale Dollfie—this line was discontinued I think before 2012). I’d also love the option of a hard body Kumik (action figure company) body but seamless bodies have eaten up that market. I don’t like the idea of using Momoko bodies because they’re not as posable and they have the same fragile ankles of Pullip Type 3. Since nearly all my Pullips are Type 2 or 3, that’s not an improvement.

As a result, and since the majority of my Pullip are Type 2s, I actually prefer Barbie Made to Move bodies over Obitsu and Pureneemo. They don't have the annoying floppy, fragile, and prone to staining vinyl and they are much cheaper and accessible. You mod them by cutting off the prongs of the piece that inserts into the barbie head and thickening the remaining bit of the neck peg using epoxy (my preferred) or rubber bands (these degrade over time).

      What I have found:
      - all Barbie made to move bodies will be darker than Pullip normal skin, but because of the variation of normal skin, some are further from it than others. If you go on RequiemArt's old customization page from her website via Archive.org, the Pullips which match white skin Obitsu best (Nero, Oren, etc) are the best.

      - The whitest skin Barbie made to move bodies are the Barbie curvy floral print yoga Amazon exclusive, the Barbie standard Asian yoga barbie, and the Barbie Looks tall blonde from the first release (darker than Asian and curvy yoga). That gets you all the sizes except petite for which, to my knowledge, thus far there is only one made to move body: the Asian Barbie Looks with the side shave.

      - Depending on your doll body version and the clothing type, they can still wear their old stock, which is important to me. The Barbie petite is closest in proportion to Pullip of all body proportions in the leg and arm length. All other bodies will turn long sleeves into 3/4ths sleeves.

      - Some type 2 pullips can use Barbie curvy made to move bodies and keep their stock. These include Pullip Anne Shirley (tight fit for pantaloons and dress), Pullip Assa, Pullip Fanatica (bloomers are a tight fit), and Pullip Paja. In all likelihood, all type 2 Pullips with animal suit stock or stock clothing without waists should work. Pullip Greggia's (Type 3) stock fits on a Barbie curvy if you move the snap on the skirt and cut off the toes of her feet and reshape them.

      - Likely all Type 2 pullips can use Barbie standard, tall, or petite bodies but the arms and legs may be too long. This includes the stock of Pullip Craziia, Pullip Paja, Pullip Sacralita, Pullip Nero, Pullip Sacagawea, Pullip Assa, etc. Pullip Fanatica is OK because like Cornice her stock sleeves are too long. Unlike Cornice her shirt doesn’t fit as tight to fit curvy Barbie

      - For clothing where pants or sleeve length matters, use a Barbie petite body. My Sacralita is on the Barbie made to move petite body. Yes, it looks orange. Yes, you can use Requiemart's body blushing tutorial using MSC and chalk pastel to adjust this somewhat. Select Pullip Type 3 stock will fit the Barbie petite body including that of Pullip Nina (if you move the snap on her skirt).

      So it goes:
      Type 1 (don't have)

Type 2: some can use curvy, most tall/petite/regular. Use petite if sleeve or pants leg matters

Type 3: some can use the petite body

For Type 3 or 4 dolls (I only have 1 Type 4 Pullip) whose stock can't fit Barbie petite, I usually swap their arms for Obitsu and cut off their legs just above the knee to pop on Obitsu parts. This fixes the annoying Obitsu body problem. I've done this with a custom Type 4 and my custom Pullip Alte. Alte is way too pale for Obitsu white, but eh.

Other bodies I've tried for Pullip:

      - Pullip Nero on a Phicen body (cannot fit stock--most stock on hybrid bodies is a tight fit and I'm afraid of breaking the silicone). Phicen bodies are the most stable option because they have a stainless steel skeleton. No head wobble.

      - Pullip Rovam on a Unoa Light Sekiguchi body (ABS plastic). This body is pretty, but relatively floppy--not as floppy as Obitsu.

My only Pullips that I haven't hybrided are my Pullip Craziia and my Pullip Raphia. I may hybrid them if I find bodies that work with their stock.

@Brightfires Teyang, standing, has a great range of movement. I thought I had another pic but I can't find it. He can touch his face and do pretty much what other 30 point 1/6 scale dolls can do. My only issue with this one is loose joints. So y'all know the sitting one is an Ertl which is no longer made.

    9. HOLD THE PHONE. You've got a Pullip head on a MTM body?? :abow:
I have a Pullip Make it Own kit, and a curvy MTM body donor looking for a recipient.
Do you have any pictures? May I see?
