Aesthetics How many faceups?

Nov 6, 2017

    1. Hey everyone!

I'm wondering, how many faceups (that you have done yourself) have your dolls had? How many before you were satisfied?

I am going to be attempting my first faceup when my very first doll (Fairyland MNF Sircca) gets here soon but I feel like I will inevitably be a little frustrated and discouraged, haha. Even though I am an artist, I have read that many fellow artists who felt confident on paper and panel felt completely flummoxed and sometimes overwhelmed when it came to painting a small 3D object. I know it will all be practice and trial and error. I've read up on the tutorials, lists, and threads that cover the basics as well as supplies etc.

So, when did you start to finally feel progress and contentment over your faceup? I'm sure it's a big sense of accomplishment when it finally happens!

    2. For me it took years but I feel like I get better with each one so it is worth it! I'm always tweaking my technique and it's an interesting and fun part of the hobby :)

    3. Did around 15 since started late Aug this year :)
Although I'm not completely satisfied, I can see my improvement, thread below was my first few tries for the face up

And the photo below is my most recent face up

I believe an art student can improve much faster than me. I've seen some art students improve greatly within first 5 tries. And their first ever face up was already quite good quality.

So go ahead and have your go. You will find face us is such an interesting thing :)

Good luck! Hope to see your photo very soon

    4. I've only had time to attempt two so far, and I was not satisfied with either of them, I'm still trying to get the hang of MSC, as the first time I sprayed too close and the second time I sprayed too far. I will keep practicing though, as being able to do my own doll faceups is very important to me!

    5. So awesome to see your progress!

I guess I can always just wipe the face obviously every time I don't like it and start over. I'm determined!

What did you use to wipe your faceups each time? Winsor & Newton brush cleaner? I heard that's better to use with either q-tips or wipes as opposed to 100% acetone.

    6. It just takes practice. I was pretty proud of my first ones even though they weren't that special or anything. I'd say don't try to do anything too crazy for your first faceup. I started with very simple just blush and regular eye color and some eye lashes and natural lips. When I was comfortable doing that I got more brave and went up to more complex makeup things like freckles, heavier makeup, different eyes, brighter colors etc.

It will take at least a few before you're happy with it ^_^ But the most important thing is to not get discouraged when you make mistakes, because you will! Then the next time you do it, you'll know not to make that mistake, and try something a different way so it looks better. :) Learning from mistakes is all part of the process of becoming good at something!

      Good luck ^_^

    7. Thank you so much! These were very sweet words of encouragement.
I'm a perfectionist but I can't always have everything right and perfect the first try, haha. I was planning to eventually send her head to an artist but.... I can't help but think I could do as good a job if I just work really hard at it and try. I am getting an airbrush set up for my birthday soon and will be messing around a lot with that! It's so easy to get discouraged but I'll try my hardest and definitely post the updates here!

    8. W & N will be good! Sadly in Australia, stores only sell the small bottle of W & N with quite expensive price... So I use nail polish remover most of the time

You will need Q tips, wipe and a toothbrush for cleaning different areas

    9. Thank you! Is eBay an option for you? I'm sure cotton pads would be good too with the W&N cleaner.
