Aesthetics recent face up practice

Sep 27, 2017

    1. I made my first BJD order on mid-July this year, which is from Luts. The 2nd doll I ordered from dollzone is a doll without face up. That's why I'd like to learn how to do the face up before he arrives home.

My first attempt on the face up is pretty messy. At that time I didn't realize the importance of apply sealant. Refer to the photo below lol (my very first face up). I even used the marker pen for drawing eyelid ...

After learning from the DOA members, I got a sealant from local hobby shop, also some pastel and acrylic paint and gouach. Apparently, the look improved a lot

Then my parents found out I bought the sealant and they were pretty anxious about it, so I then asked DOA members for help. Some of them suggested me to try the liquitex matte medium since it gave a matte look as well as non-toxic. I directly went to hobby shop again and bought it! (But the airbrush + compressor are quite expensive, so I tried the sponge to dab MM on doll's face) Sorry, forgot to take a photo before I remove the face up...

I think at that time I must do something wrong, cos when I tried to draw the eyelid, the sealant starts peeling off. Pencil color does not stay on properly. Skin is pretty rough (I don't think the rough skin is a bad point. It actually gave a real skin feel. However the color is far too easy to apply, the drawing looks bit dirty)

Another problem with dabbing method is, it will smudge the face (or could be I dab too hard...)

So I thought why can't I try to simply brush the MM on. And I made the face up below:

It worked, except the eye area doesn't have enough sealant. The very next day I tried to put more sealant on the eye area (on a new head, not on the previous head), refer to photos below,

Any suggestions guys? Does the eyelid look ok to you?

Note: for liquitex MM I don't normally do the final seal (until I buy the airbrush) and the head sculpt is DF-A practice head.

Update: 01.10.17 Want to try something different

    2. Personally I think the eyelid looks fine!
If you have problems with the sealant, maybe try to do more but thin layers, that way it shouldnt peel of I think.

    3. Wow, you've improved so much! I think the eyelid looks good too. Love the nose blush :)

    4. The eyelids look great sealant-wise! My only suggestion would be to make the eyelid crease continuous. If you use a light color first it's easy to darken parts on later layers, keeping everything subtle. I don't have much experience with brush sealant unfortunately, but perhaps a fan brush or something with spaced-out bristles can help with applying it in thin layers?

Also unrelated, but the green eyes in your last three photos are amazing :D

    5. Your improvement is really quick. A lot of these are amazing, especially the concept and art style. With some practice, I'm sure people would like to buy from you.

    6. Wow that was some fast improvement, especially on the eye area! :o I really like the last one, the faceup is very balanced! How often do you redo the faceups?
I also use the matte sealant and hold it pretty far and apply it multiple times in thin coats, never got problems with it peeling off that way. I think the peeling off part comes when the layer is too thick? May be wrong tho. ^^
Nice work any ways, I'd like to improve at the same rate too! XD

    7. Not too sure about whether it is too thick or too thin.. or simply I draw it too hard :huh?:

Thanks :) Before I put the blush on the nose, everything looked bit plain to me, so I added a little color :)

I'll try to make the eyelid crease continuous next time :) already washed one of the heads, will do another face up recently
And the eyes are made by Sala on taobao, she has a great range of eyes, they all look beautiful! BTW, I thought they are gold color lol

Thanks! I'll try to do watch more youtube videos for the face up :3nodding:

When I use the spray sealant, I tried to do it once per fortnight. But I've recently changed to the none toxic liquitex, so I did it around once per week. I really want to do face up practice more frequently, but I need to work Mon to Fri :doh The last face up should be the 10th head I've tried. (Bought three practice heads with different skin tone - white, pink, and normal skin tone) Sometimes I can draw three heads all at once lol

If I'm too lazy to clean the head, I'll practice the lines on the paper. And seeking advice from DOA members is quite helpful. It gives me ideas about what I need to change and how should I change it :thumbup

    8. Wow you improved so fast. I guess I should switch to Liqutex, too. The weather in Germany is often rainy or windy and it feels like this only breaks during the week or for days to cold or hot for MSC.
Do you have any tips for the dabbing method?

    9. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the dabbing method, I simply brush the liquitex on the sculpt three times...
Without the airgun, I won't be able to do any further sealant after I apply any type of color (acrylic/color pencil etc.) It will smudge the color. So I only apply first three layers and start drawing and leave it there without a final seal :sweat (good thing is, it's easy for me to remove the face up, since they are all practice heads ;))

I would suggest you get an airgun, even a very basic one. I bought one and going to try it in recent weeks :wiggle So I can do that final seal, or seal in between face up layers

    13. You're really good at giving them interesting & wonderfully executed details! And it looks like you're improving so quickly!

    14. Thanks :) I try to do fancy drawings on the practice heads, but for property heads, I tried to keep them simple, just in case I mess them up lol

      Some new updates:

    15. I'm loving the Japanese/red-themed faceup you did! Looks like Madara from Natsume Yujin-cho. :3
I think you're improving a lot, every step of the way. I've personally never used brush-on sealant so unfortunately I have no pointers for that.

    16. Thanks :dance For the red themed face up, that is based on the mob game Onmyoji. That character's name is yoko

    17. @natsu82 I love the Onmyoji inspiration you did for one of the faceups! I simply adore those styles of bjds. And I’m impressed with how quickly you were able to learn and improve

    18. Thanks! I'm trying to learn face up cause we don't have that many artists here. And I've ordered Dollzone Gray without face up. Finally Gray arrived yesterday, all my practicing is for this moment :whee::whee::whee: Also did a body blushing for him

    19. Such great improvement! Keep it up!

    20. At first I saw the old pictures and I thought it was not too good

I keep going down and the newest pictures I thought you were posting company picture for reference

It is fun to see your improvement it is encouraging because it got so good in little time

The only advice I can give you is the lip smear because the other look very nice and cool

For lip smear you will need to build up with gouache because it is nice in giving that smeared effect with build up

You can also use acrylic without fluid retarder for a thick look and then build up the blur with powdered pastels so it looks more like smear instead of wiping off paint mistake

      Your progress is encouraging

      Lovely

    21. Thank you :) Will keep trying

I think that's the main problem of my face up, not enough layers. Lots of times I was wonder why the color wasn't that strong, then I realize I only use one layer (normally)... Have to keep practicing

      Thanks for the advise.

      BTW, today's face up :celebrate
