Photography How is my editing?

Jun 1, 2017

    1. I got Adobe lightroom two days ago and not sure if I'm doing it right. I have been watching tutorials on it but yeah. I was using picmonkey before but it wasn't really good so i got it.

This one is the photo i started with. this is like edit 5 out of 7.

The fist one was pissing me off so i started with this one. It turned out better I think. Better then the
Picmonkey version click it to see that version.

Today I did this one. I think its better then the fist one but not better then the second one. I don't like his eye in it.

    2. It might help if you could add the unedited photos too, that way people can compare and see what you did on each picture in question :)

    4. They look good-- you've really boosted the color in an attractive way. I'm not any kind of an expert at photo editing, so there's nothing I could offer by way of suggesting improvements/tips/tricks, all I can really do is say that I like how they look. Particularly the blond doll with the butterfly backdrop. The eyes look amazing, and the overall image feels balanced. The intensified colors don't feel out of place
      and it's a cute shot.

    5. I think the original pictures are already very pleasing to look at.
Properly lit, nice colors. Honestly don't need much to bump them up to a "polished" look.
The edited pictures are a tad too much at times: the top one has too much clarity/dark contrast, the one in the middle is a tad too saturated, and at the bottom the eye is really a bit too much because you had to lighten up the whole area quite a lot (thus got more noise there too).
But it's all always just a smidge too much, you are overall heading into the right direction :)

I personally can't give you much in-depth help in regards to LR, since I usually use it mostly for the "base" in my editing, i.e. I usually do:
      - more Exposure if needed
      - add some Black
      - add Clarity
      - tweak Contrast
      - fix WB if needed/modify Temp and Tint

Afterwards I import the pictures into Photoshop and do the rest of my "base" there (Curves, Levels, Color Balance, Resizing, Sharpening via Filter).
Then I clean up (removing dust specks, flyaways, lint on clothes), tweak certain spots (usually via Dodge & Burn), gently sharpen the eyes and mouth extra (via Tool).
Last step is basically everything that is unique to the picture/set, i.e. removing things from the background or adding some colored layers/using an action. Okay, and then stamp on the signature and save.

Which LR version do you use?
I personally restricted myself to an old version (Lightroom 3), since afterwards the Clarity function was changed in a way I personally do not like (you can see it here well at the bottom picture of the party people).

As an added tip: do yourself a favour and clean up a few things before you take the picture.
Like those two single hairs on the face in the middle picture, or that one dark hair on the forehead in the bottom picture.
It takes way longer to remove those via editing then checking one last time if everything is sitting perfectly
That's true for other things too, like for the last pic you could have used a reflector to bounce some light onto the other eye too (or take two pictures, one where that side is properly exposed and one where the rest is, and then combine them through editing).

    6. I have Lightroom cc.. Idk what that means!! Thank you for the tips and tricks~ I'll double check before I take photos now~ Never noticed them haha. Photoshop seems too hard for me. When I figure out LR I will try Photoshop also. One at a time haha Thank you for your help guys!~! I might redo them and come back to here.

    7. CC stands for "Creative Cloud" and is the subscription version Adobe offers for their software.
It's cheaper than a full license, but the CC version has a few small differences compared to the full ones (which, usually, is no problem for regular users).

And yes, checking while taking the pictures can help to avoid some small unpleasant details (like hair sticking out or a big piece of lint on the face etc.) and being forced to edit them out later.
I usually use a lint roller on the clothes, afterwards I gently brush the hair. Helps a lot, especially with black clothes ;)
Oh, and checking if something is in the back that shouldn't be there is a good idea too.

    8. Oh good advice!! I will keep trying until i get it right. Thank you so much~~
The subscription one isn't that bad for me. couldn't buy the full one.

    9. I am not a doll expert (Newbie!) but I've chosen many photos for marketing projects over the years. First, your dolls, outfits and backgrounds are wonderful!

When it comes to taking photos of them, the important part is to make sure you are highlighting what you like best about the doll. Is it the eyes? The hair? The outfit? The accessories? If you want to create a portrait, like a painting, you want the light hitting what you want the viewer to focus on, and then have the viewer glance around the photo. In your edited photo of the girl doll, the butterflies are beautiful, but they take the focus from her gorgeous eyes, which is fine, if that is what you want, but if the doll's eyes are more important to you, you would need to boost her eyes back to compete with the butterflies.

For the first photo you were frustrated with, I would try again having the light come up from the bottom and reach his eye. That way the accessories would show more and lead to the eye, which is beautiful.

My apologies if I'm not explaining very well, or overstepping. Here is a link to a portrait...you can see the bird, the plant, and the woodwork are highlighted, but the focus and light is leading you to the face.http://www.culture24.org.uk/asset_arena/6/58/56/365856/v0_master.jpg
