Oldest: Lily (Volks SD Nono) 20 Nov. 2006. Canon Ixus 500. Wow... I missed her 5th birthday! This is the 1st shot I took after the box opening which I'm excluding. I knew nothing about photography then, and looking at pics from that session it shows XD Newest: Unnamed (Soom Kivi) 2 Oct. 2011. Canon 450D modified for infra-red. I recently had the camera modified to do IR, so I thought I'd test it on dolls too so this wasn't a serious shoot. My old photos are SO embarrassing. Worst of all are my meet photos. There are worse than this, but this is my oldest. Perhaps I should put one of those in as well, just to show qute how bad it can get. Oldest meet photo Canon EOS 350D. Canon 50mm prime lens. Minor tweaks in Photoshop. May 2008, one of Arkady's lovelies. Look at that captivating pose! The startling composition! The lack of light on the face! Newest meet photo Same camera, with Sigma 55-200mm lens ('cause I've just broken my nifty fifty *sob*). December 2011. Krowbar's stunning Dia boy. I discovered how to stop down! I have skin tones! I also found out that setting the camera to ISO800 in low light isn't a mortal sin. ETA: Oh, have one of the more awful ones too. October 2008. Same camera, with the 50mm lens. Look at the motion blur, over sharpened so that it has all gone crispy! Yay!
Oh man, I can't believe it was really so bad. This is not the OLDEST photo, because the oldest one is him without a faceup, but this is really quite old, with Gabriel having my first ever faceup (done with msc SEMI-GLOSS no less). The recent one isn't my best shot, but I think even then, there's a drastic improvement. I think this thread is really inspiring! Thanks Knibitz! Oldest: Was a HP Cam, definitely the first shot I have of my first doll. Then I upgraded to a Sony TX-1: Followed by a Nikon D60, 18-55mm lens: & My last D7000, 50mm lens: I can't say I'm awesome, but I'd say to any new owners, U can do it! Practice makes PERFECT!
Looking back at my old pictures, I kinda cringed. Lol. This is not my oldest nor my first, but it was among the first 'photoshoot' I ever did when I got my first doll. This was taken around the late of 2008? Using my old Sony Ericsson mobile phone's camera too. And then, I got my first point and shoot camera, which was a Canon camera. Picture taken around near December 2009? I could not really remember. Man, I remember how proud I was of this picture, and thought how much I loved it back then. Then, I finally got my own proper DLSR, a Nikon D90 and I was mostly using the lens that came along with the package. Not my first picture using the DLSR but one among the earliest photoshoot I did. Taken during early of year 2009. Using the same camera, and I got my first prime lense, using a f/1.8. Taken on 18 July 2010. This was taken for my photography class before. And then for 2011? I didn't really take much doll photography, since my creativity was in the dumps. But here's my most recent picture, that I took at my group's booth, at a local convention which was some days ago.

Oldest Volks SD16G SchA March 10th, 2011 This definitely isn't my oldest photo. I'm positive my older photos are in a Photobucket album which the pin had long lost from my memory. After that I change again and use Canon DSLR1000D around year 2009. Model in the photo is Adora, my LimHwa human. Newest Currently using Canon DSLR 600D(2011). Model in the photo is Adora. Oh, good grief I am terrible at photography and all my pictures end up looking the same, but I like to think I have improved a little...? maybe...? OK. I think this was the first photo ever taken of my first doll, Teal, with his first faceup. It was taken on 14th October 2009. There are so many things bad about this Allow me to list them- first, the faceup, which makes him look as if he's been dunked headfirst into a bowl of tomato soup, and his eyes which seem to be sunk into his cheeks, but that's not really part of the photography. What is, is the weird cropping of just his head (spooky decapitated doll), the complete and utter lack of any kind of posing (I literally dumped him in a shrub), and the fact that the focus is actually on said bush. I suppose maybe I get credit for attempting a bit of composition. Look, his head as at one side of the frame! I R photographer now. And then I discovered fiddling with pictures in Photoshop or other Photoshop-esque applications to create something flat, grainy and unsophisticated. That said, I do still really like this picture I also felt the need to include a watermark in case anyone was desperate enough to steal my beauteous artwork and pass it off as their own- sadly, this has actually happened! And this is the first photo of the same doll taken with my DSLR in January 2011. The focus is off- in fact, I'm not sure what the camera is focusing on!- but I think there's some improvement: And this is the latest photo I've taken of my skanky little witch. And to be honest, it's pretty mediocre! It's all a bit flat and uninspired. Still, I like to think I'm learning. Great idea for a thread, by the way!
Oldest - 2010 I took this photo after shortly I got clothes for my first doll, I guess it's his first official "photoshoot" with a background set-up and everything. Most of my photos were taken with my Pentax Optio, which is a pretty good camera--I still use it to this day and am rather attached to it. Newest - 2012 Taken with my DSLR, Canon 550D with kit lens. It's funny cause I don't think my photography skills improved at all... rather the style of the doll changed to go with my photos. I guess I coaxed some life into my subjects.
I think mine have actually gotten worse in the year that I've been taking doll pictures. At first I was super excited, and set up a background and a whole studio-style lighting setup for my pictures, and spent several hours perfecting the shots. Now I just want to take pictures and get it over with, so I'll just use one flash and rely on shallow depth of field to take care of the background for me.
My absolutely first doll photo, taken with my old Olympus FE190/X750 september 13, 2010 Latest, taken with my current Sony DSLR-A390 december 29, 2011 I think there is definitely some improvement there, but room for a lot more xD

Actually I am only slightly more than one year in BJD photography because my first two-year-waited doll appeared in my house in late September 2010. I didn't change my camera during that time, only skills. I still use PS in very limited range because I like photos as they are. In the beginning I had nothing (lol sound like some lyrics from Silent Hill). Okay, I had no camera at all, only could borrow one bad, old and cheap from my girlfriend's mom. This pic was taken on March 2010, when Ida (my Soom Dia) arrived. Then we bought a cheap digital camera, and I learned how to choose angles and comb doll's hair And to use photoshop. Pic was taken on March 2011, year after the first one. And then, we bought DSLR Olympus E520. Now with only kit lenses, but soon we plan to buy 50mm lense, more photosensitive, than kit one ^__^
funny enough I never took a picture of a doll until I had a DSLR. I was at an Anime con and saw someone carrying around 'a cool barbie-looking thing' so I asked to snap a pic ^.^; Can anyone tell me what type of doll this is, or maybe even who owns/owned it? Of course now I own my own PukiPuki, and here is a very recent photo of her:
Hansel, my first doll, first day home, taken almost four years ago with a Fujifilm Finepix F10. Ewewewewewew... Same doll, upgraded to a Canon Powershot SX120 about two years ago and I've been using that ever since. Also got better with editing in Photoshop. This one was taken about a month ago.
My first doll, Faiyu (CP Delf Yder), arrived in the beginning of January in 2008. This is one of the first five pictures I took of him with my crappy digital camera that I forgot the label of. It's shaky, has dull light, no editing, and his eyes are askew because I didn't notice, because omg I got my first doll and I was so excited. And this is where I am now, well sort of, considering these are taken in December 2011. All my other dolls have gotten my attention lately, so I've not taken photos of Faiyu since then. Pictures taken with a Nikon D90 and I've also since long discovered the magic of photoshop: I'd say I've at least gotten a bit better. :3 And since I've just recently discovered something new THIS YEAR, this one is from the most recent photoshoot I had, about a week ago:
Well, this is interesting... Everyone has improved so much! Let's see mine; Older: Dollzone Hid, my first doll ever. Shot with Olympus E-something-something. I didn't have camera at that time and I borrowed my sister's. Can't remember what it was anymore. Edited this with... Picasa? Anyhow, this was summer 2009. Oh goodness. What is this even? (And yes, I was the best at styling dolls. Playboy bunnies..............) Newer: Or-doll/Nyxdoll Limos. I bought my own camera about two years ago, Nikon D90. Still hanging around with the kit lens though... and still no Photoshop or whatsoever. Nope, GIMP2 and Picasa3 are all I've got. This is from around New Year's, one of my recent photos I like (the ones I have photographed after this have been rather ugly, so yeah); Oh dear. Improvement is clear (hopefully). I've been experimenting with lighting and different techniques in hope of finding my own style. I still have a long way to go, but I'm getting closer... to something.
This is really interesting to see. And it makes me go o.o But nothing really changed except the camera and knowing how to use photoshop and lightroom a littttle better now, but not much.
