Hello all, I was just wondering how different people store their dolls? My two sit on my desk most of the time but I feel like there could be a better place for them! I've seen doll wraps on Etsy which are essentially sleeping bags, is there any point to these? How do you keep the resin babies away from the dreaded sunlight? Discuss! XxX
I don't really store my dolls away. I like to see them on a daily basis so they all sit in my room on the table next to my bed. I don't have to worry about the sun because I have black curtains that I usually keep closed unless I'm in the room. I'm not super scared of yellowing but I do make sure that they're not bathing in the sun.
My dolls are sitting atop two separate shelves, except for one who stands on my bureau mostly because I think she's strung wrong and can't sit properly. I don't do anything particularly special to keep them out of the sunlight, but that's mostly because I keep my blinds shut throughout the day and the room they're in remains relatively dark otherwise. I think if I lived in a home that received a lot of natural sunlight I might go through the pains of installing a dark curtain of some sort over their shelves. To be honest, I prefer keeping them out rather than stored away in their boxes or a bag. I like seeing my dolls as that's usually the extent of my interaction with them a majority of the time.
The shelves and corner where they sit is the darkest corner of the living room...: and (for winter when the sun is lower in the sky so slants further into the room) my fiancé painted a waist-high folding screen to keep the sun off them. Teddy
Whatever works for you works for you, is what's best for you. If I kept them in boxes it wouldn't be worth my having them - I want to see them and pick up whichever one I want to play with at a moment's notice and be able to plonk him-or-her back in place without needing to allow extra time for finding the right box and putting it all away again afterwards. Teddy
I have mine in the lowest shelf of a glass cabinet. They are all MSD sized so they can sit comfortably with quite a bit of room left over. I live in an apartment more or less below ground level so our windows are maybe half the size of regular windows and the curtains always pulled for. Sunlight never makes it in, not directly, we have some daylight but nothing sharp and nothing that extends to the glass cabinet.
I keep them in their original box too. Only the one that i am playing is out from the box. I don't want my doll to get yellowing . But if i have more money in the future i would love to buy a glass cabinet that has UV cut glaze on the glass for my dolls to be displayed
I've never had the heart to keep them in a box nor did it ever cross my mind doing so either. Guess it would be different if I wasn't all that privileged what space goes. Back to the question at hand; I too, as Teddy, keep the resin family on full display on shelves. They have taken the entire room to themselves and I have the curtains down at all times, just in case of the sun and not wanting them to yellow more than necessary. Not all of them are in this picture, but it's where they hang out.
I have a hobby room in my house so everyone is on the shelf in chairs sitting or using doll stands for when I am not home. The windows have shades and they are almost always drawn to protect them from sunlight exposure and the room is always temperature controlled. The door is shut to keep the pets out of there as well. I'd share a picture but I cannot remember my Flickr password to save my life! LOL!
My dolls sit on a shelf in my living room, they are never in direct sunlight. It makes me happy to see them when I'm on the living room.
Nadeko has to live in her box on the usual day-to-day basis, she does sometimes spend a few weeks outside of her box but in that case she is sitting by or laying on her box in the closet.
Like Teddy and Ruki, mine are also out on open shelves, though I don't have quite so many so it's only one shelf (at least, until I bring the second one up from the car...) The majority of my dolls live on a shelf near my bedroom door; the wall is perpendicular to the window, so sunlight never reaches that part of the room. There's also a couple sharing a chair on top of my bureau, and a few hang out on a separate shelf hung on the wall near the window (so again, sun doesn't reach it). Currently, two are sitting under my mini Christmas tree, as part of my decorations; I love having them out where I can see and touch them, so I've never considered either storing them in boxes, or storing them in a covered/enclosed shelf. I don't have a picture of the full shelf, but here's the most crowded as of a couple months ago (there's another in this grouping, now, which is why I have to bring a second shelf up...) All of my dolls are kept in their boxes since I keep all of the boxes anyways and it helps keep everything organized. I added additional shelving in my master bedroom closet so all of the boxes fit and I can easily take out one or two without needing to re-arrange everything. They are also completely out of the sun, which is nice, as I live in a very sunny apartment and only take them out when I am home on the weekends or in the evenings.
Mine are sitting on a doll bed that I turned into a day-bed/sofa for them, which is on my night table next to my side of the bed.
It's interesting to see that so many people keep their dolls out! I would've thought that everyone in this hobby would keep them packed away when not in use to avoid the dreaded yellowing. I will probably do that, honestly. But I might not care later on.
All of my dolls are out and exposed, they either sit on my desk or my night table, depending on where I am since I like to keep them near arm reach in case I wanna mess with one of them while I wait for a game to pop or my friends to get online and such. My room is super dark too and I live in a rainy place so the chances of them yellowing because of the sun is pretty much non-existent, yellowing on their own tho, nothing I can do about that.
I have all of my dolls out because I want to see them everyday. Two are on my dresser, and the other three are on the side table. I also have a little tiny off topic doll on my computer desk. My house is pretty dark (okay it's a cave) so I don't worry about yellowing, but honestly, when I lived in a sunny apartment, I still had them out. My ex boyfriend who was an avid action figure and statue collector once told me "toys are meant to be played with." For me, keeping my girls in their boxes to preserve their resale value or mint condition status would never work. When I move to a bigger place in March, I'm going to get the glass-front cabinet that matches my dresser and night stand for them to hang out in because the friend that's moving out here to stay with us has a cat. That said, I have two incoming dolls that will probably have to live in their boxes 'til I move because this cave is SMALL.
Berwyn and Ro hang out in Ro's pleather ResinSoul case under the couch when I'm not actively engaging with them or present. Sometimes I do just sit them on the coffee table while I'm watching TV or reading, but I can't leave them out alone as my cat cannot be trusted!
This is an old, out-of-date photo, but a bunch of them just hang out in this lovely, deep bookcase. I do have 70+ dolls though, and the rest just live scattered around the place. (A vampire lives in his own coffin, three witches have their own table / diorama. I've had my father make three 'park benches' that hold four dolls each. My two favourites live next to where I sit in the living room...) The only time a doll returns to a box here is if it's been sold and en route to a new home. Essentially, I like to be able to see them!
I used to display my dolls on my desk in direct sunlight because my desk is in the living room and we have no curtains or blinds (actually none of my rooms or curtains or blinds). But my dolls ended up turning really yellow especially after I took a break from the hobby for a few years and neglected them. I recently came back into the hobby again (though I sold my big boy) and this time I converted my music room into a dark room where I covered the windows with black boards to keep out the sunlight. The room is permanently dark now unless I go in to play with my toys and turn on the lights.
I also keep mine out. Resin yellows as it ages anyway, there's no way to prevent it 100%. I keep my dolls on shelves in my doll room, with curtains closed and the door shut. They're not exposed to heat anymore than they would be in a box, and they don't get direct sunlight either. I'm like some of the others--if I can't openly see them and they stay stored in box, I'm not interested in keeping them. I tried putting a couple in storage and ended up selling them because I had no interest in keeping dolls I often forgot I owned.
I only have one haha but I have a small room/diorama for her so she spends her time in there while im at school or away ^w^
I really admire you all for keeping them in eyesight, that's what I would want too... But, anyone else here who's annoyed to death by dust, like me? I patiently collect and put my dolls and their belongings into boxes after playing with them. I just can't stay cool at the sight of dust particles resting on noses xD
When I need the "company" or am working on clothing I set my dolls up at my desk. But to protect them from animals, dust, and the threat of falling off the desk.. I put them in a little writing desk in my room. (I live in a basement so not much sun)
I bought a nice display case this year to keep my dolls out in the open without getting dust on them, when I had just 2 tinies I kept them stored in their boxes, but as my collection has grown in number and in size I've found I most enjoy having them out for me to admire in their full regalia - and I am too meticulous to not keep them sheltered. I also keep the blinds drawn in this room when I'm not in it so that they don't get unnecessary light exposure. The dolly display by faireva, on Flickr
I display mine on a desk which just happens to be in a corner of my room that the sun never reaches no matter which window it shines through.
At the moment my doll stays in the box she came in on a shelf in my closet when I'm not doing things with her. ...But I'm wanting to make a carrying case for her, I just haven't bought supplies and gotten around to it yet. Once I make the case that will be where she stays.
I keep all my lati yellows in a box in my closet... I have one yosd that sits on my nightstand. I really want to get a cabinet for them all to sit in. That way I can see them all but their up and away from little hands. I also want a little curtain installed to close if I decide to open the blinds. As for a "sleeping bag" off of etsy, you just have to be careful of their eyelashes and that the face up doesn't get scratched. Most people use those bags for going out to meet ups with their dolls. Though I have seen them used as wraps for storing them away in.
Currently hanging out in my car's trunk because I'm moving around. Its the only safe place I have to offer them while things are sorted. I do plan on having a dolly room for them. I plan on having them on display there while I work on outfits or stories for them. I just really dislike the fact that they have to be kept out of the light. So, it will have to be a room covered in curtains.
I converted my old wardrobe into a sort of doll room. My crew hangs out in there. When I want to display them or handle them, I just open the doors. When I am not working on them, I keep the doors closed. It's a great way to ward of dust, sunlight, and cats. I am kind of thinking of changing out the wooden panels for glass or acrylic ones, though.
Mine are all out - either on bookshelves or in a storage cubby where I can see them. The bookshelf I have to cover on the days we have sun this time of year, because the sun will hit it for a little bit in the morning and mid-afternoon. I figure that they'll yellow even if they're kept in boxes, and I didn't buy them to keep in boxes - I bought them to see and enjoy. However, I also don't have kids or free-roaming pets - just birds and small furry critters who all have a cage or enclosure to call home.
I'd love to be able to keep them out all the time but since I'm sharing a room with my sister I don't have a lot of space to set them and I also have two bunnies in the room as well. They've been sitting in their boxes/carriers for a long time (due to some room renovations).
My dolls are stored on a shelf in my room away from the window. Throughout the day they're usually behind blackout blinds and curtains but I open the window and curtains periodically to let some air and sunshine in. At night I have some really low lighting next to my bed but it doesn't hit them. I used to keep them in my wardrobe in their boxes but I never saw them that way.
Right now my only BJD is in her box right above my bed. I like to keep her out of direct sunlight while I'm not playing with her. Hopefully I'll revamp my room a bit to have shelves where I can display her and my other off topic dolls. I'm also making her a house which will be used to display her as well.
I'll be keeping mine in my boxes, as I have zero room to keep them out. I'll get them out when I'm home and playing though. I also live in a crazy dusty place, so there's that too. If I ever get to move, I'll dedicate space to them then. I don't like sunlight so that won't be a problem if they're out.
I've got my dolls stuffed in a drawer in my room right now that's lined with scrapbook paper so that the sun doesn't get in. My apartment gets full sun all day so I don't leave them out in case of uneven yellowing. when I get some black out curtains I'll probably go back to the book shelve set up.
My poor dollies sit in my closet most of the time. ;_; I have a very sunny house and am afraid of leaving them in the light too long.
When we moved in to our new house, we put UV blocking film on all of our windows, plus the windows have blinds and drapes that are more often closed than open. (This was mostly because I also have books and fabric that are sun sensitive, but resin played a part in the equation, too.) They have a stage setting built out of wide IKEA Ivar shelving. Now that we are fully moved in, I can try to get back to giving them my attention.
I guess I'm not the best doll owner, but mine are out in the open on display in my room all the time (on doll stands). But I do close the blinds when I'm not home and toss a light blanket over my resin dolls.
Right now as I only have one doll (and one on the way) and don't have my craft room set up yet, I keep her in her box most of the time. Eventually I will have a shelf or cabinet made up for displaying them, although I'm sure most of the time my girl will probably hang out on my art desk lol
Back when I only had a handful, I kept them in our art studio on display. Over the last several years the dolly population has exploded, so they now have their own closet. I don't keep them boxed up, but I do keep the closet door shut so my kitty doesn't knock them over or get his fur all over them.
I keep mine in a tiny diorama on top of my dresser! I absolutely love seeing them, even if I find myself worried about yellowing, and I tend to forget that I have them in the first place if they're packed up. Ideally, I want to get a glass case to keep them in, but that'll have to wait until I have more space.
Hopefully in a shelf facing away from the window in a dark corner in my bedroom but I'm getting unnecessarily paranoid about yellowing as time passes by. :p
I display one doll at a time, and everyone else stays in their box when I'm not actively doing anything with them. I did have my one display doll on my mantel, but recently my husband and I redid a room in our house to be a study/library type of room, and when we made the big built-in shelving unit we put in a section specifically to be a display box big enough for an SD+. I only like having one out at a time, and whoever I just did a new mod on or finished a sewing project for is usually who gets a turn in the display. The exception to that rule is Hazel, my one tiny. She is pretty much always out and ends up posed in all kinds of places around the house. She's so portable!
Where I can SEE them. Actually the living room belongs to them & the cats.... I have sun blocking curtains on all the windows, btw.
PukiPukis go wherever they want, because PukiPuki - right now Aisling is in the dollhouse (in time out until her hair arrives) and Cara is guarding a stack of beads on the table. Nina (MSD) has mostly been hanging out on the sofa because I'm in the middle of knitting her a shawl and need to keep checking the sizing. When my SDs arrive, they're going to get a bench to themselves in the corner, and Nina will probably move to join them.
I keep them in their boxes in my closet. I keep one doll out at all times, and the rotation changes every week. My room is, luckily enough, situated in such a way that natural sunlight hardly ever shines in. (my room is a bit weird, I only have one window.)
I want to see my dolls every day, so they're stored behind my bed, and I use blackout curtains to avoid a daylight I play with at least a couple dolls yvery day, so I cannot put them into their boxes Happy New Year 2016! by Toria Soll, on Flickr
My dollies usually sit on a shelf in my room. I don't keep the blinds down all the way, and I'm not overly worried about yellowing, but they don't sit out in direct line of the light, so I don't really worry that much. Sometimes one will migrate out into the living room, and there's even LESS direct light in there. Still, I keep their original boxes, in case I need to put them away for a little while (like when the parents are visiting).
My dolls sit near me in my room. When I am playing games, they are seated on a low shelf right by my TV. I would love stands and do not store them, I kind of feel like that would be a waste. They sit away from the window because like everyone else here, I love seeing them everyday! I'm not really worried about yellowing and I don't anticipate ever selling them so why put them away?
I really enjoy hearing how different people handle this. :3 When I first joined the hobby I was super concerned about yellowing. Then I realized rather quick how much I just enjoy seeing them out...so now they have a dedicated bookshelf. : ) The bottom shelves are for the massive amounts of clothes I own, misc. supplies, and they all sit on one of the top-most shelves. Luckily my room windows are situated under a covered deck, so NO sunlight gets into the room (much to my dismay..so dark in here). I try to keep one of them on my desk on occasion so I can see, enjoy and play with them as I like. Rotation! Someday when we move they'll probably remain on their bookcase, only made sure to be away from *direct* light. Otherwise...out and beautiful!
Mine are on bookshelf where they aren't facing direct light, though I do have one who is too big to fit, so she's generally on a night stand under a cover to avoid light and dust. She's the only one I have thought of putting away, only because she's so big, I really hate not having all my dolls out all the time. I like to see them.
Anton sits on a trunk at the foot of my bed. Cat sits on my entertainment center. Once I get my computer desk, they are going to be moved over there.
Mine are mostly all out where I can see them. They are in my bedroom and my sewing/doll room and some are in my office. The ones out in the open are not in direct sunlight and most in my sewing/doll room are in 2 double door pantry cabinets. I have 99 resin bjds and it is hard to display all of them but most are on display.
All of my dolls are out. The room where they're kept is pretty dark naturally. I cover them with linen when I'm not actively doing something with them or traveling. The only time I pack their bodies or heads if if one is away for services or waiting for a body, etc. Ultimately I want special shelving for them so I don't have to bother with covering them with the linen. I love seeing them and at random times I'm inspired to change their look. I know they'll yellow which is fine for me. The joy I've gotten these last few years from collecting is absolutely priceless.
At the moment I have three dolls that I keep out so I can see them and my others are currently kept in their boxes. I am hoping this is going to change later this year when we have finished work on our house and I have more space. Having read through this thread it is great to see some pictures and reading through how people store and display their dolls.
I have one doll and a cat. They stay in their boxes during the day when I am at work. I get home late so it is dark when I arrive. That is when I get them out of their boxes and dressed. They stay on a desk where I can see them. Later I make a bed up for them and they stay there during the night. My husband thinks I'm crazy. In the morning they return to their boxes (kind of like vampires).
