How do you store your BJD, clothes, and accessories?

Feb 5, 2015

1. So I'm getting back into the BJD community and I was just curious how you guys store your doll and all the odds and ends that come with them? I have pets and I have some plastic desk organizers with sizable flat drawers right now from the last time I had BJDs but I was curious. What methods do you guys use? Any prefered types of storage or suggestions on how to store and with what? I'm a bit concerned the shoes I've bought won't fit into my current set up. I'm usually pretty picky about my space and I don't like too much clutter so I think it'd be interesting to see how you guys store and organize your bjd items when not in use and to protect against animals and such.

2. I have several "snapware" type containers; a larger one for the MSD clothes, since they have the most clothing of any of my sizes, and two additional ones for the YOs and SDs. I can organize type of clothing by layer that way (and the big MSD one came with a few dividers, letting me split things up even a bit more), easily get to clothes and put them away, and store them in a way that keeps them clean.

Accessories don't really have a storage situation worked out yet, but likely I'll add a couple more trays to the SD stack, and put them largely in the bottom of that. At current, they're in a couple of plastic tubs, but said tubs have things that properly belong in them and will eventually need to go back to them.

3. I have an extra bedroom that has become the doll room. It stays shut and has curtains so dolls are safe. They stay displayed in their "rooms" on shelves. The extra stuff is in the closet. If they have their own bedroom (all of them don't), all of their clothes, props, accessories, etc are in their room in a dresser or displayed. The ones who don't have rooms hang out in a friend or family member's room or community couch. They have a shoebox sized plastic tub in the closet with their name on it that their things go in. Each doll gets their own tub, but I have larger tubs for extra bedding, and a small set of drawers for things like extra wigs, paperwork, and extra parts. Extra furniture and large props are on the closet shelving.

4. My dolls are all stored in a bookshelf and on my headboard and there stuff is stored in the living room in a giant like chest thing with drawers and stuff. I keep all my clothes organized in little baggies. My wigs have their own box.

5. I bought some fancy chipboard storage boxes on sale at a craft store for my doll clothes. They're pretty enough to stack on a bookcase or by my closet. One of my OT dolls has a bookcase apartment in my bedroom that she currently shares with my tinies. My one MSD more or less lives on my bed with two of my cloth dolls. I do have to cover the bookcase shelf with a towel this time of year, though, because the sun does hit it for about half an hour in the morning. However, once it gets to be about mid-spring, it's one of the darkest rooms in the house.

6. @vicemage
I might have to try something similar to that! Still trying to work out how I want to organize for all the items I'm getting. ;u;

@CloakedSchemer
We have a spare bedroom in our house so I was actually considering turning it into a doll and craft room. I might also try your organization of separating each dolls items to their own space! I wish I could have them hang out just anywhere but I'm not 100% sure how my kitties will take my dolls. I know he already wants to play with an old wig of mine with a bunch of braids since the braids are akin to strings for him so having my dolls out unsupervised might be a bad idea ;A;

@KizunaYui
I'd love to be able to display my dolls on a bookshelf or something but I'm worried about my kitties if I did that. Baggies sound like a little extra added protection for doll things so I might give that a try along with a few other things that I want to try out. :3

@LadyMadrigal
Oh chipboard storage boxes sounds like a nice and beautiful way to store things. Right now the plastic storage containers are rather ugly and I'd rather keep them out of sight but, knowing me, I'll want my doll things to be located near by. I might try to modify a bookcase type apartment for my dolls or, eventually, see if I can get a shelf with a glass closure so my kitties can't get to them. It certainly sounds like your dolls have a nice set up ;3;

7. I have a pair of relatively small, three-drawer chests of drawers that I got at World Market for all the shoes and most of their clothes. (The exceptions are my DollHeart Fers, which have stayed in their original boxes in the closet. They're too "poofy" to really fit well in the drawers. o_0) My spare wigs are kept in a storage chest that doubles as a side-table, and the eyes are in a glass-topped, divided storage box originally intended to hold beads.

The dolls themselves have a set of matching display cabinets with glass doors. That way they're away from light and dust, but I can still see them. ^_^

8. This is just the kind of thread I was looking for earlier. Organization can be so troublesome and it's helpful to see other how other people do it. Right now, I just have all my dolls sitting on my dresser with some of their furniture and props, then I have a hatbox filled with their clothes and accessories. But I know the setup isn't gonna work for long when get more dolls and things for them.

9. Absolutely! I figured it would be good to see how others are doing even though I have a plan to try out a few things. People can be so creative and being young without much knowledge of what might be out there...I figured I might be able to learn from the creativeness of others and take inspiration from their storage methods. I love the thought of being organized and neat while still making everything look lovely but, by nature, I'm a "grab a box or drawer and shove stuff in it" kind of person most times xD. Since my dolls and their items are so costly and I'd like to have easy access to them, I'm really trying to avoid that default mental setting I have xDDDD.

I also think it'd be pretty awesome if people had pictures to share of their set up/storage space if they have stuff on display.

10. OOO! I might have to get a thing like that for my eyes, and I definitely want to get some display cabinets eventually to fit 4 60cm dolls that way light and dust isn't a problem (or my kitties) but I can still see them pretty well. I just have to find a place to get them that fits in my budget ;;

11. I have... A single shoe box. :sweat I really don't have many clothes/accessories for my poor dolls (and not from lack of wanting, I promise you). Also got my extra eyes and wigs in there.

12. Currently, my dolls are an old-style magazine rack from the fifties, the kind with a large storage space in the bottom for extra copies of the magazines and shelves that adjust on a wheel. The dolls sit on the shelves, but the shelves unfortunately tilt backwords slightly, which does some damage to wigs and looks uncomfortable. Clothes are kept in storage containers in the bottom space (mostly Yu-Gi-Oh! card tins, ha ha) and in cute mini-crates on the shelves. When I re-do the space, I'm moving the dolls to a large bookshelf with furniture on the shelves, and I haven't decided how I'm going to store the clothes. I'm leaning toward cuter plastic bins on the bottom shelf of the bookcase, so I'm looking for better solutions.

13. Hope it's okay to include a link but I have two of these in my storage closet which I use for clothes, wigs, eyes and other tools like s-hooks, and face-up material. They're really handy and not so pricey. I have them in black but I'm sure they come in other colors too. I'm not a big fan of the plastic look though.

14. Mine came from Ikea... I have these big ones and these narrow ones. They're pretty solid cabinets for the price.

All but the center shelf is adjustable, so you can make each shelf as tall or short as you need. Everything but my EIDs and tall, gangly DC guy fit in there.

15. I have one of the bigger snap ware containers for my yo-sd, msd, and sd boy clothes (one size per layer). I have a few of the smaller ones with the dividers for accessories, shoes, spare parts, and other small odds & ends. And then I have bigger containers for my sd13 girl clothes (they have the most stuff), and my wigs (about 3 bigger boxes of wigs). I use the small arts & crafts divider containers for my eyes, and my model doll girl shoes ended up in the shoebox size plastic bins (she has the most shoes).

All of these bins are stored on the top shelf of the closet in our spare room.

I'm not über thrilled with the solution, but it works for now. Hopefully I can get things a bit nicer in the future. :)

16. All the dolls (BJD and off topic) except one are on various shelves.

Most of my (and the yeti's (my husband)) off topic dolls live in an Ikea bookshelf in the lounge that has been turned into their house. Their clothes and what accessories aren't on display live in drawers that fill one of the cubby holes - the one above cubby hole has a door and is very slowly becoming their bathroom!

The one BJD who doesn't live on a shelf lives in a cupboard in my bedroom which has a sea theme going on inside it.

The human MSDs each have a cardboard box with their clothes in, which I must label. Shoes, wigs and accessories live in a larger cardboard box. The tinies clothes, shoes and accessories live in a set of 4 tiny drawers. Random accessories (mostly far too much Re-ment!) live in tiny clip top crates. Oh, I also have one of those crates full of eyes, and another full of random body parts - mostly for off topic dolls. And so I don't have to root around the cardboard boxes to see who has what clothes, I've got pics of everybody's wardrobe… :roll:

But we don't have pets any more. If we still had cats, then I'd probably have all my dolls in my office/study so I could keep the door closed when I wasn't in it.

17. I have a very tiny room. I don't know why I am buying more dolls. I don't know why they are all SD. I should have kept with tinies!! Like omg, there is NO ROOM. xD

Currently, the boys are all sitting on my ringdoll box, that is on a storage drawer thing. There are 5 currently, with 3 more on their way. I use a very large suitcase to hold ALL THE THINGS. With the exception of some of Nicky's things. Like his salon chair, some of the boys' hats, DaVinci's scythe, and some other things that can't quite be stored. (breakable/bend easily stuff.)

At first, and this sounds cruel, I had most of my dolls in a big box or smooshed in the carrier. Nicky was the only one out. Now they are all out, and taking over my room. xD I need to rearrange my room (again) just for them. I am also looking into getting a tall bookcase, as that will help with organization and I can clear out clutter that is stacked on another drawer thing. I definitely need to deep clean and de-clutter for these dolls. Since, I'm not going to stop collecting anytime soon..... >____<"

18. I have this twenty dollar wonder from Target. It is wide enough that I can lay out my SD sized things and not have them get fold marks while being stored. The deeper drawers are good for wigs and miscellaneous things like dollheart boxes. And it is only $20!
I just wheel it into the closet to keep it out of the way (and away from light). And if I need to dig around in it to find something I just wheel it out. Best doll stuff organizer ever!

19. lovelovegirl I have 4 kitties and they will not jump where there is an over abundance of things plus they have never really jumped on bookshelves cause they are too full of dolls and or manga. Bags are nice for clothes and you can stick little dryer sheets in them and keeps them smelling fresh and clean.~

20. I wish my kitties were so well behaved. I have a 3 legged cat and he likes to get on shelves. He also likes doll wigs, I had to scold him already about getting to and trying to chew on one of my doll's braids xD

21. Tonboko I have some things similar to that just without wheels. I might get one like that, though, because I feel like the wheels would be nice so I can just wheel it in and out of my closet when I want to.

22. I have one large snapware type container I got from Container Store when it was on sale. It has held up quite well and fits all of the clothes to date. I want to get another one for other doll things (or maybe I should just clear out how much I have XD).

23. I have most of their clothes in a medium sized plastic bin, and another similar sized bin full of 4 puki puki/ real puki boxes, a few spare wigs, ect. The two real pukis and one complete puki puki spend most of their time in a dollhouse. My bigger dolls (mature tinies) are all sitting in a "living room" at the foot of my bed. Unfortunately its where the sunlight through a south facing window falls. I stick the bins in front of them when its sunny, but my first doll, who's tan, is changing color slightly! So maybe I should find a different spot in my room for them.

24. Right now I have their accessories stored in their individual boxes, but I'm looking at getting a small plastic bin with drawers to hold their stuff instead. It has worked out pretty well so far, but some of my dolls started sharing clothes and it would be so much easier if all the accessories were in the same place.

25. i have hat boxes in different sizes and writings on it what is in and for which size dolls :)

26. I currently keep everything in a cardboard box, but I would love to have a part in my room where I can display everything nicely :). Would love a clothing rack, shoe rack, accessory rack, wig stand..

27. I cleared out one of my clothes drawers for the girls. I have all the little things such as eyes, in little plastic containers.

28. It all started with a cardboard box, the one my first doll came in. Soon, that got too small from all my doll's stuff, and her new friend, so I needed to add a box. But those boxes got beat up, so I got some small suitcases, they're technically makeup suitcases.

Then I got Amiga and made her a ton of clothes. Her makeup suitcase got so full that I had to get a plastic bureau for her. It's almost as tall as she is, and it's almost full! And I'm already planning more outfits for her.

29. My doll storage is still evolving, but I use old glucose meter test strip containers to store spare eyes and jewelry bits.

30. I use those mini plastic drawer set things? I have no idea what to call them! I have one at the moment for my one girl but it seems to be getting way too full with all the stuff I get her. Luckily I have a tiny coming so I can just buy a bigger drawer thing for the big girl and give the small one to the tiny!
I like these because they are easy and practical and everything has a place. I use these little plastic containers my dad gave me from his computer stuff for eyes and tiny clips.

It's funny because with my non-BJDs, all of their stuff is just stuffed in a drawer with the velcro undone and no organization my babies have so many supplies to keep things in good condition!

31. Is...

... 'badly' an answer? ;)

Seriously. I have stuff everywhere. The SDs have a large, human suit case for their clothes, and another shopper-style bag for their lingerie, and a big gift box for their shoes, but then there's the two newcomers who, just to be different, like casual clothes, so they've got their own shoebox, as do the other two who refuse to share their fairly specific wardrobe. Oh, and the MSDs have their own clothes box the same size as the SD shoe box, and... the tinies have a... tiny... corner of the large box the two 70cm boys store their limited collection in.

Aaarrgh... *_*

It's a nightmare!

(And the thought of coming up with a better solution is just far too daunting!)

32. I use shoeboxes. I think they are a great size for MSD clothes.

33. I keep my dolls in their boxes. And I have labeled containers for wigs, clothes and other stuff. But I keep all of it in my closet so my pets can't get to it :XD:

34. All my dolls sit everywhere in my room but only in shadow because I really enjoy to see them everyday. :XD: Their clothes and accessories are separated into many boxes; white/ dark colored clothing, pants, kimono, shoes, accessories made from metal/resin/clay/glass, etc...

35. I don't really have a lot of clothing for my girl, so all of her stuff is kept in a closet I made her.

36. I'm using a box where I put clothes and accessories. I still have not so much stuff so it's not a problem, at the moment. And I have my dolls sitting on a shelf in my bedroom. ^_^

37. I am currently rethinking/evolving my doll storage, which worked well when I had 8, but not so good with 19! My clothing is in separate snapwear boxes divided by SD, MSD and Tiny. I have two three drawer plastic bins that I was using for shoes and accessories, but my shoe collection has over flowed and I need to make separate storage for it. My clothing boxes are also too full, so I am trying to decide if I want to do individual boxes for each doll (perhaps those pretty book boxes you get at Michael's) or if I just want to separate out all the themed stuff-make boxes for my Victorian and Japanese clothing and keep the casual stuff all together.

My eyes are currently in one of those bead boxes that has the box with the sets of screw-on compartments for different sorts of beads. One pair of eyes fits in each compartment. A good doll friend set me on to that idea.

The dolls themselves are currently residing on my bookcase and dresser in my curtained bedroom.

38. I'm in the process of making a small adjustment to my doll clothing storage.

Having just received another (fancy, pricey, multi-component) outfit for my SDs, sitting down to put it on, and realizing I had no idea how it was actually supposed to go together, I've decided to store all pieces of the outfits (once I change the boys again) in a zippered plastic bag*, with a laminated printout of the company photos of the outfit. I think having a picture of all pieces and how they go together, as well as company identification for future reference, will simplify future attempts at putting them on, and the zippered plastic bag (with smaller zippered bags to hold the tiny ornamentation pieces) will keep everything together so nothing gets damaged or lost!

*Thanks to a former "job" combined with a mismeasurement, I have sturdy acid-free zippered bags in a size that will nicely fit any SD clothing coming out my ears, I may as well use them!

39. My dolls are on a bookshelf, and I plan to make that shelf into a doll apartment with furniture and a backdrop. The shelf gets some indirect light from the bedroom windows, but the dolls are far back on the shelf, in shadow, and my bedroom windows filter out UV light. The shelf is high enough that my cat can't get to it, and just in case, he gets locked out of the bedroom when I'm not home. For now, my doll clothes are in shoeboxes.

40. I keep the wigs in a plastic Ziplock baggy with nets around most of them. Little socks and panties I keep in a zipper bag. Then clothing I keep in a giant laundry basket. I HAVE SO MUCH CLOTHES...mostly because I make my own. :sweat

41. I have a series of plastic totes with little plastic containers inside of them to contain their things for now. Once we move I may do something different, maybe a drawer system.

42. I have a small metal lunch box that looks like a suitcase, it's 'Paddington's' suitcase, I got it from the cinema when I went to see the third Hobbit film. It's perfect for storing clothing and items as I don't have a lot and it's a suitcase, so it makes sense!

43. I live in an apartment without any pets~ I store most of my BJD inside their original boxes and the extra floating heads in seperate plastic boxes (bought from the 1 dollar shop). Since the weather in Taiwan is very humid, I preserve my BJD leather shoes in an electronic dry cabinet along with my camera lenses. The eyes are also stored in their original boxes and the ones without boxes inside my jewelry box, they look pretty with my rings :p Clothes stuffed inside shoe boxes and zip locks. I really need to find more space for my fabrics though...they are taking up too much space!!!

44. Alot of you guys have some really nice ideas for storage ;A;. I think, until i get more funds saved up, I'm going to clean out my second dresser and probably store clothes and things in there. I've currently got clothes put in a small plastic draw type organizer but it filled up really fast so I'm probably going to keep small things in there and set aside somewhere. I'm definitely going to nab ideas from some of you guys as soon as I have more funds ;3;

45. At the moment in a cardboard box (i've bought an outfit in advance of receiving my bjd) but I'm going to get a plastic container. Eventually I'm going to buy or make a little wardrobe :)

46. I bought a plastic drawer for my doll stuff. I originally had all my doll clothes in clear plastic containers but I was running out of space because I mainly own SDs. I rand out of space in those containers quickly and I spent less than $15 on a tall organizer. It looks like a dresser and it fits perfectly under my desk, plus it has three drawers in it. I can keep everything organized.

47. I also have a 3 drawer plastic dresser for bjd clothes and accessories. Some bigger boxed items have to go in the closet top shelf though. As for the girls, they either go with me or sit around the room, especially on the bookshelves.

48. I really wish I had an organized and easy arranging for my dolls' clothes but I've just been kind of lazy with that... Right now I've just got everything in different kinds of boxes and it's so ridiculously hard to find a specific item sometimes. Some things are in the boxes with the dolls, some with my off topic dolls.. It's all a mess, really. :doh

But reading your replies gave me some ideas what I could do with them. :) A Little wardrobe would be just amazing! I just need to get on with it now.

49. We set up a little closet. We bought a narrow and short BILLY bookcase with a door, from IKEA. Under a couple shelves we screwed an eye screw close to each edge, then ran a dowel through. When the shelves are in the book case, hang bars are created to hang all the clothes. The other shelves are for wigs and shoes. It's a bit pricey, but things are easy to find.

50. I have a bucket. When the bucket gets too full I start selling stuff that's no longer relevant to my collection's tastes. It's worked pretty well so far.

51. As I collect other types of dolls and figures as well as bids, I use sterilite drawers to sort out the various outfits and accessories.

52. I actually posted our (mine and ChocolateDecadence) doll room a while ago on Tumblr.
Most of the dolls are in Ikea Detolf cabinets, standing on white cubes, or in one of the Billys.
In the cubes we have all the resin parts and props, while we store their clothes here (old photo, except for the white cabinets everything has changed since then):
[IMG]

Two on the left are mine, right one belongs to Choco.
The little tags on my side either say the character (like, "Roman" which means all of the pieces I use exclusively for Roman) or describe the overall topic of the drawer's inside (wigs, dark clothes etc.).

53. Most of my doll's stuff are in ziploc bags in my craft storage drawers. I do want to get like a little trunk or something to put them all together.

54. My dolls were in a glass-front display case until I ran out of room in it (they were sharing it with my anime figure collection and were eventually crowded out!), so now they're in a downstairs hobby room, hanging out on square shelves too small for my cat to jump into. Their clothes and such are stored in Sterilite bins with their names labeled on the top.

55. My dolls sit on a bookcase and just hang out. I use small clear marked tubs for clothes and shoes and their wigs. I just close them up and put them away when I don't need anything. But I need a better way to store stuff because I am losing space... lol :sweat

56. I use different Ziplock bags to sort my clothes out by size, brand or origin (handsewn, 2nd hand ect.) and I put al of those in a special cupboard in my room :)

57. I keep mine in an antique corner hutch. The shelves are adjustable if I wanted to display my dolls, but I keep the accessories in there and the dolls in a bag I made, because if I stored the dolls in the hutch I would not have room for the accessories! Plus storing my girls in the bag keeps the sun off of them.

58. Plastic boxes for clothes.

59. I use a small set of plastic drawers meant for stationary. Sounds similar to what you said you had.

60. I have four relatively small boxes with everything in them. One for wigs, one for clothes, one for everything else (eyes, shoes), and one for supplies (cleaning stuff, string, etc). They are in my closet and to me, look out of place and kind of just stuffed in there. I am actively trying to figure out a better system.
